      Isn't Somaliland the land of somalis? I mean literally it's land of somali people and yet you guys keep trying to separate yourselves from Somalia but you kept the name, language, culture, food, and everything else 🙄...Somalia is Somalia. We are one people with one language, culture and religion . When will that get through the heads of our qabiilest people?may Allah protect and heal the hearts of our people .. 💙💙 👉🇸🇴🇸🇴🇸🇴

    I remember my grandmother keeping a collection of xeero and fandhaals. I loved eating from it because of the oodkac always available. This food is the most Somali thing in the cuisine. It’s made in all the regions because of the fact that our people are mainly pastoralists and the product of our livestock is our stable diet. Some call it oodkac, some call it muqmad and some call it collob. Those are all regional vocubs for the same thing.

  • @Ceelxaar

    western somalia, (in Ogaden region) we call it Colob, in koonfur mogadishu area, its called odkac, in the northern where the girl came from they called Muqmad

    No need to politicise things. He's just stating facts. It is called xeedho and is very much a reer waqooyi thing. It is symbolic and contains not only muqmad but dates as well. Done I think after a week following the wedding. Reer koonfur am sure you have your own traditions so relax.

    • @SamOfSomaliaTV
      @SamOfSomaliaTV  7 років тому +23

      If I say Somaliland it is political to southern Somalis. If I don't say it it is political to northern Somalis. It's a lose/lose my end. I just do my best to make what I learn accessible to people who want to learn like me.

      @SamofSomalia you don't have to get involved my brother. I've been in many countries and been a minority for 35 yrs. Coming back home and seeing this division really pains me.
      I don't long for unification but I want my people to prosper and develop their land. Tribalism isn't the solution.

    There isn't an easy way to remove the strings. The bride's family make it and they make it so difficult so the groom and his "boys" struggle opening. It's symbolizes the bride and her complexities. It takes ages to make as well. In my uncles wedding, they did a fun activity where they put the xeedho in the center of the hall where everyone was watching. They got a female hostess to facilitate the activity and she had a stick. Every dared man would come up to try to find the hidden knots and any mistake they made would be caught by the hostess. They had like only a minute and was hilarious to watch!!

    Yaaaay I FINALLY got to see one being unwrapped. The meters of string and it being SO hard and long to unwrap was a deliberate thing. The string used to be very symbolic of the brides chastity so the harder and longer it took to unwrap= a more chaste bride

    • @rid9160
      @rid9160 7 років тому +2

      I asked my somali friend and its nothing to do with chastity they place food,clothes and other gifts in it and to open games are played, the numbers given have to do with part of the families who have to give them. what you said is bullshit basicly

    • @MuslimPrince_
      @MuslimPrince_ 5 років тому

      Mayah lool @ a more chaste bride?!! Wtf

  • @ayaan8877
    @ayaan8877 7 років тому +52

    Assalamu Alaikum brother....the string is intentionally tied very tight and is made difficult to open because during the "fujaan" or xeedho ceremony there is a folk game that is played to entertain the groom and bride where dissent male family and friends attempt to open the xeedho. They are given a couple of tries and if they fail they are given a riddle to solve. If they fail at the riddle they are given a dare to do in front of the guests at the ceremony. the dare can be anything embarrassing like singing a song on a certain topic, shaking the hands of all the women in the room, just anything funny to embarrass the participant. Also the best friend of the bride stands by the "fujaaan" holding a stick and she playfully hits the hand of the male attempting to unravel the string if he forces the ropes or takes too long...Hope you learned something :)

      Exactly Ayan nuur that's the whole culture and meaning of xeedho with the fujaan and only practiced in weddings,this practice and culture is mostly done by ISSAQ,I've witnessed this in one of our weddings and the southerners Somalia were like"what is that?" am reading some comments and am like attend any southerners somalis wedding and you will never see a xeedho and fujaan in sight,all the somalis make muuqmaad or odkac but the xeedho and fujaan with all that set up is an isaaq culture in somaliland and the other tribe I can say maybe know about xeedho might be Dhulbahaante,period!!!

    • @MohamedMohamed-qh7cj
      @MohamedMohamed-qh7cj 7 років тому +2

      +Mohamed Mohamed Am very sure the xeedho that Sam is holding came from an ISAAQ family,only isaaq women tie those knots and it's part of the wedding cerremony and all about the bride,if at any point some reads my comment am very sure he will be nodding am right that this fujaan was brought and made from ISAAQ family.

    When the groom opens it it's an event with friends and family and it's not meant to be rushed the white string thing is symbolic , before women would hit the dude who was getting the knots wrong . A lot of people pour black tea over the muqmad to take the subag away but you can eat it cold I do and let the subag melt in your mouth most people like it with laxoox but I like with mufo

    The most efficient way is to let your self do it. that's the point!
    and yes Muqmad is always ready to eat hot or cold but never use hands when serving! its also a culture among Kenyan Somalis. And some house's it under lock and key. It has a very long shelf life.

    That is the trick. The end of the string is hidden so the man works hard at finding it. Efficiency is not the point. The point is patience and skill. Remember this is a symbolic bride at her wedding night. So unravelling things quickly is not the point.

    Fujaan and Mugmud. Since it’s a northern tradition, it’s home is Somaliland and to some extent (due to colonial boarders). In parts of the occupied territories of region 5 currently in Ethiopia. Also the above is Standard Somali based on the Hargeisa dialect as it’s the clearest Somali dialect used in books, radio , TV and all media formats. Switch on BBC News Somali and you hear the presenter speaking Standard Somali as it was the least corrupted by colonialism and Italian influence. Southern Somali is at least 30% upside down Italian maybe even 50% another fusion language all together.

    We cant get somali hooyo to show you how to open, because men open some of the xeedho/fujaan ( oodkac one) at the wedding and there is a man with a thin tree stick who strikes the fingers of the men who gets the opening wrong. Women get xeedho (( contails halwo and sweets)) to open as well and same rules go, rest of the xeedho's the grooms family distribute to the family members. So opening is meant to be tough, the person who can open it without struggle gets cheering.

      Traditionally the xeedho or fujaan is not opened on the wedding day it is opened 7 days AFTER the wedding and traditionally only a woman can hold the stick and hit the men that get it wrong
