Groholski was so underrated at this point. I remember Hawk even talking him up in a quote for a Vision ad. Something about the judges at comps completely missing how consistent and unique he was. Lip trick master.
My growing up era! When boards were big and the ramps bigger! Southern California IE. We had a nice big ramp up in Crestline with a channel and a nice ramp in Apple Valley. I still have my Pipeline card! And skated Delmar when visiting my cousins in Chula Vista. And shredding the streets. We would get dropped off downtown and skate all day! Still hitting the parks here in Texas. Waco has a nice place and Austin has two that I hit! Love watching the old contests! Used to see Lance Mountain and Lester with the Albas at Pipe all the time! First time I was skating the Combi Lance said keep at it kid you're doing good 👍! But really those dudes hardly let the little kids roll in!!! But I'm still skating at 52!!
I remember that park on Orange Grove. I skated that ramp. Big, steel, red, fast as hell. I couldn't get myself to do the roll in but I have tasted that coping. Some of the best days of my life. #TooOldNow
Look up the roster. Art and Steve were at a lot of Texas skate contests. They lived in the Dallas Mid Cities for a time. Met them at a local Euless ditch. Both of them were the knarlest sober skaters I ever met!!
@@indiglo1971 I wish my sister hadn't thrown all my gear away the second I went in the Navy, I had ten years of collecting some great stuff, boards, shirts, stickers, autographs, posters, magazines, fuckin' hell.
Haha, when the skate gods were dealing out style to the Texas crew, they'd run out by the time they got to 'ol Wilkes. The odd balls always keep skateboarding intresting, though.
I like how they don't print Ken Parks name then show him all hyped after his run then pan over to the unimpressed kid in the crowd. Haha. Dude was always kind of a kook jocko.
Hawk was robbed this contest. He made all his tricks, always ended with something crazy each run. McGill improved a hell of a lot from 85 to 86, but he shouldn't have won.
@a You have a point here: Ken Fillion would float 10' above Kahuna regularly, placing him 24' off the ground around that ramp. That 10' transition and 2' vert steel ramp was built for flying. I did that too, myself, on that monster as a teen-ager.
This was Historic in my world. Touring hotels before and after contests was monumental. Thanks Dennis, for building it "so 'they' would come".
@a So you'll troll and stalk me now. Impressive.
John Gibson got zero coverage in the magazines but he was no joke.

My dream road trip in the 80s was to see and skate this metal ramp.
Monty Nolder...Perfect!!!

My first board in 87 was a Groholski
I rented this on vhs when I was 12 years old. It was a long one, good times.
Merciful Fate playing in the background and one point lol😮 so 80's

The 80s were the shit. If you didn't grow up at the time, I'm sorry, you missed out. It was all about having fun and self expression.
Haven't seen this in years.... early days for a lot of the pro vert skaters
hells yeah Monty
yo what was the wheelbase on mike smith's board? that thing was precarious
Was this Ramp at Houston Skatepark?
The Kahuna was a behemoth. It was the fastest freakin ramp on the planet.
With the metal layer? And the deadliest 😆
There was one almost or just as deadly and just as broiling ...big blue metal ramp at stone edge Daytona beach..
8:34 the Monty grind!!
Knox Godoys dad or uncle was skating in this?

Does anybody know the size and specs of the ramp? I wanna build one.
Echo 1 12’ x 20’ w/3.5’ vert... is my guess
At some point Paul Schmitt says. Watch all parts of the video.
what's the music on the beginning?
@MusicFromRobE the crucifix was a fast christ air, but Hosoi took it took to the extreme
Those boards in the beginning the boys are holding are worth $1000+ on eBay today.
I still have a G&S Nicky Guerrero with Indy 169's and Lester Ollie wheels.

groholski brought thrash metal into skateboarding lol
what is the name of the trick that neil does at 0:17
+SWVIDS01 It's still Phillips at 0:17. Neil does a backside layback tailslide at 0:19.
Backside layback grind to tail. Eddie Elguera invented them, Neil perfected them.

Nice tape goatee lol
Surf & skate weres the 🏄🏼
Have to say, Kevin Staab not so impressive. Out of his element on Kahuna. Not sure what his element was, though.
Oi!
Dan Wilkes...so much style....all of it bad :/
Haha, when the skate gods were dealing out style to the Texas crew, they'd run out by the time they got to 'ol Wilkes. The odd balls always keep skateboarding intresting, though.

Hawk was great then but not very Knarley then. His nuts eventually dropped.😜
