- Akira Kurosawa once said, “The ordinary Japanese actor might need ten feet of film to get across an impression. Toshiro Mifune needed only three feet.” However, the filmmaker certainly gave Mifune-born on April 1, 1920-a lot of space: over the course of sixteen indelible collaborations, the actor and the director created some of the most dynamic characters ever put on-screen, all marked by an explosive physicality, live-wire intensity, and surprising tenderness. Discovered by Kurosawa during an open audition at Toho Studios, Mifune would go on to inhabit a wide variety of roles-from gangsters to samurai to salarymen-in the director’s greatest films, masterpieces like STRAY DOG, RASHOMON, SEVEN SAMURAI, THE BAD SLEEP WELL, and HIGH AND LOW. Further cementing his status as an icon of Japanese cinema with his commanding turns in classics by Kenji Mizoguchi, Keisuke Kinoshita, and Hiroshi Inagaki, Mifune left behind a formidable legacy as one of the most electrifying performers of the twentieth century.

I love that this is just a montage of him being a loon
Why would anyone give this a thumbs down? Mifune was a legend.
Martin Scorsese doesn't think it is kino
@@BrickTamlandOfficial huh?
I can’t understand it either. They must be jealous that Mifune is a legend.
Probably an accident
@@lukess.s it's a meme
Remember when Mifune was going to play Obi Wan Kenobi? Imagine that for a minute! A screen legend if there ever was one.
He didn't do the role because he thought it would cheapen the image of a samurai.
whataburger chocolate chunk now I love him even more
He pretty much did in The Hidden Fortress
According to Mifune: The Last Samurai, He was advised by an Agent to turn the role down...
For me, It was a fair decision but still, I want to watch him as Obi wan via Deepfake .. hahaha
In his autobiography, Kurosawa gives him so much credit. He really admired the talent of this man.
I also admire Mifune because without Mifune there will be no Seven Samurai and also mifune was the first actor that make action movies so iconic for later movies (big example Scarface, Spider-Man and other movies)
@@miguael_ribuera I mean, Kurosawa also played a ridiculously large role in that endeavour. With his Hidden Fortress, Star Wars may not have existed.
And has been part of the most influential films of all time
Best. Actor. Ever.
One of the most talented and handsome actors of all time!
I just watched Seven Samurai for the first time last night. I didn't even realize I was celebrating!
That's one big milestone for a cinephile
Best laugh in film history.
They said that Clark Gable was King. My vote goes to Mifune!
Agreed!
damn straight.
Top 10 greatest ones, along with Brando and Kinski. An absolute legend.
Douglas R. de Olive kinski was a goddamn psychopath though.
@@CraneFast And he is overrated.
Zeks Deks Werner Herzog would probably disagree.
Happy Birthday The Great Mifune-san.
I have missed you since 1997 and will miss you the rest of my life. Thank you for all your movies and all the great roles you played.
I'm still dreaming of a Kurosawa Blu Ray box set like you guys did with Bergman. C'mon Criterion. Make it happen!
Happy bday Toshiro!
Ringmaster I think they released one already
They released already, but it was way back before they started selling movies in Blu-ray. The Box-Set was called "AK 100: 25 Films by Akira Kurosawa" (is out of print now). You can expect a brand new Box-set once they get the distribution rights of "Ran".
@@NEMIHEMERA God, I hope that's soon.
Happy 100th to a legend
...he's dead
@@lukess.s No shit dumbass
Happy birthday mifune!!!! 🇯🇵
A legend of cinema
Mifune San is the reason why I drink sake ! Happy birthday to the legend
An ex-boss took me to see The Seven Samurai with English sub-titles years ago. I had never realized that the Magnificent Seven from 1960 wasn't original! Mifune was one scary, impressive dude!
Redbeard might be my favorite performance of his... but then again it’s hard to choose a favorite with Mifune.
Yes, Red Beard happens to be my favorite too ^^
a masterclass in laughing
Happy Birthday to Toshiro Mifune. I'm celebrating his birthday today by watching Seven Samurai. I'm on a Akira Kurosawa journey at the moment, his movies are unlike anything I've ever seen, just truly unique.
"I'm not always great in pictures, but I'm always true to the Japanese spirit." - Toshiro Mifune.
Phenomenal actor
Gotta love the guy. Yojimbo!
What a legend.
happy birthday, king. stay safe out there!
One of the greatest. Happy Bday to the great Ronin
Great primal example of artistic masculinity
A very rare sight these days unfortunately :(
@@nimazsheik5152 Bruce Lee was his spiritual successor in my opinion. Maybe even exceeding him but... Toshiro Mifune is an actor's actor, with his old-school gruff Eastern features, wrapped with his volatile temper, and physiological devotion to his cinematic craft. He truly was one of a kind...
He's so underrated tbh.
Best video of all time.
*A CINEMATIC KING*
Long live Mifune
I just can't get enough of this video 😍😍😍
LEGEND
Genius!! Hell in the Pacific criterion! Get it sorted!
Legend!
日本に三船を超える俳優はまだいない
Ah, that piece of
news cheers me. 🖖🏻✨
I love Seven Samurai movie and Toshiro Mifune acting is really great
I don't think I have heard of this gentleman before. Interested in clip. Must catch up.
He had nuance and range. I think that's a bit lost here. He could bring immense dignity and gravitas as well as that characteristically anarchic exuberance.
Criterion should make Mifune shirts. Seriously.
お誕生日おめでとうございます
Come to Europe already!
Toshiro you always in my hurt 🇯🇵🇮🇷
The Wolf. #ToshiroMifune100
Mifune was the Japanese John Wayne. He didn't shy away doing his own stunts. In "Hidden Fortress", he rides a horse carrying a lance pursing his opponent like he's one of the four horsemen of the apocalypse.
Great video! But it needed more Red Beard and Animas Trujano
Ascolta LECTURES 2020: "Toshiro Mifune, l'ultimo grande samurai" di Roberto Nepoti (Rep)
Brando was the American Mifune.
Mifune was wonderful but this music and arrangement is grating.
What movie is Mifune in where he’s doing a dance with a button up ( but not buttoned up) shirt with short shorts walking
Drunken Angel 1948
What did Kurosawa mean by his quote?
Need the movie title badly now 00:02
its Yojimbo
If your website is not available for continental Europe, why oh why.have a UA-cam page available for the same region. That's mean. Mayne.
Criterion Channel, please make another one of these, but focus on his more serious roles so everyone unfamiliar with Mifune doesn't think he's just a buffoon. And please change the title of this clip so it doesn't make people think he's still alive. (Ex: Celebrating the sillier side of Toshiro Mifune for what would have been his 100th Birthday)
If he were still alive I'd believe it. However, since he has been dead, dead, dead since 1997, I vote this down for being a false headline.
This is pretty misleading; Mifune _would've_ turned 100 today, but he's been dead since 1997.
Luke S. Considering today’s date, it can be read as a cruel April Fools
Are you always pedantic?
@@JT-kk3fu you can explain it, we all see it, but the title is still misleading.
@@thecluckingassassin when there's something as misleading as that title, yeah
Really bad choice of music
I just made a trailer for Stray Dog if anyone is interested!
