I tried this last fall when it went dead calm using a floating line with long leader. I was in my float tube and used Phil's really slow hand retrieve and it helped me catch 6 fish at end of the day.
Just curious as to make of transducer mount are you using on the Summit Lake video. Summit doe have some very nice fish. We are just hoping for no winter kill this year. Bill,
Hello Dale, I have enjoyed the few shows you have recorded at Summit Lake. The fish are beautiful and good sized! What I am curious about is when do you fish naked vs with an indicator? What conditions would you recommend for fishing naked? How far up the line from the fly do you tie on that swivel? Thanks, Mohamed
Here are some general rules we use when deciding what chironomid setup we will use; - Using a fish finder, if we see the fish are all holding at a specific depth, then we will use an indicator and try to hang the fly in that zone. - Again, using a fish finder, if we see that the fish are at various depths then we will use the ‘naked’ technique so we can vary the fly depth to fish multiple zones. - We also like to fish ‘naked’ technique when fish are feeding in shallow water and want some movement on the fly. You also won’t spook the fish since you won’t have an indicator on. Just some general rules we follow and hope it helps.
We use the following setup; Scientific Anglers Clear Midge Tip Fly Line with a 9’ or 12’ tapered leader along with 3’ of 4x Fluorocarbon tippet to the fly. Vary your total leader length based on the water depth you are fishing.

Bill,
At the time it was a simple Humminbird suction cup setup. We have have the new super magnet transducer mounts that are excellent.
@@SFOTF Thanks

Hello Don, my apologies, I meant to say Don and not Dale. I know he cohosts often but not this time!
All good 😊👍👍
Two quick questions, was curious what size boat and how you decided to anchor where you did?
The boat is 17’ so plenty of room for two people. We decided to anchor where we did since the depth was good (
When using this technique which leader line should one use? Rio Indicator? Regular tapered?

What was the retrieve used when fishing chironomids naked?
Very slow hand twist retrieve. Just enough to keep the fly off the bottom and moving super slowly.
@@SFOTF good to know. Thank you. Have you tried a two fly setup with one fly being a chironomid and the other fly being a scud?
Only allowed to use one fly in BC waters, so unfortunately not but I bet it works great?
Fishing WITH chironimids that should read.....
Lol...I think I better change the name 😊
