My objective for this channel is to share with others what I have learned over the last 30+ years about living and eating healthier. I share my knowledge with my small circle of friends all the time. I am not a doctor, nor do I hold any type of medical degree, but I believe that my tried experiences may help someone else.
For over 30 years I have used every diet imaginable to lose weight, but I confess that I am now at home using the vegan lifestyle. I want to share what I have learned about eating and enjoying food. And, since I am still learning how to be more consistent with this lifestyle, I have decided to eat more healthily, realizing the weight will come off eventually. Though I have not reached my goal weight, I know that sharing with other people in front of a camera with help me to stay on course.
I have, with the help of my husband of 37 years, raised 3 grown children. I will also share some cooking shortcuts as well as some natural formulas I have used and still use for everyday problems.

Thank you so much for this educational video, I learned so much.
After cooking the radishes, I have found that the bitterness disappears - really good !
Broccoli is my favourite, with cauliflower a close second. Yum. I didn’t know radishes were cruciferous. Good to know. My husband loves them.
So glad to hear that, Sugarplum. You're both on your way to better health by eating those faves of yours. Thanks for leaving such an encouraging comment👍🏾
Thanks Berta.

You have a video about how to keep vegetables fresh. I Buy broccoli in big bags and I’m inquiring how do I keep the broccoli fresh in the refrigerator I do eat broccoli every day I just don’t want it to go bad I would love to have your advice should I keep it in the bag should I cut it up in pieces and put it in a bowl after I rinse it with paper towels. Dr Eric Berg says these veg help prevent colon polyps, which I have a problem with
I'm 77 years of age and I eat acres of these cruciferous veggies Berta and I love them all. I have done this most of my life but most especially since I've become a vegan 2 years ago. Thank you once again for a very informative video. Best Wishes from Australia. Stay safe.
1st, Evenlyn, forgive me for taking so long to reply to your comment. I didn't forget you. You're so welcome. I love making my videos and am so blessed that they have reached all the way to Australia. You stay safe, as well. So you were 75yo when you became a vegan. You are an amazing woman that I do admire. Thanks for your comment. 🥦 ❤️
One of my all-time favorite foods is a huge tray of nicely roasted broccoli and cauliflower with just a bit of olive oil salt and pepper. Heavenly! I also roast some cabbage with just a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar tossed over it to caramelize it a bit. So good
Sounds lovely. Do you put oil on the cabbage as well. Just curious because I use little or no oil in my cooking. Thanks for sharing. ❤️
Berta Jay Yes I do personally, but of course you can tailor it to your own taste
@@519forestmonk9 Thanks so much, 519. I do love ACV (apple cider vinegar) ❤️ 😊
@@bertajay no oil! thank you for this video!!

You're welcome, Flordeliza. It helps to know what you're eating and how much it will benefit you when you do. Glad l taught you something.😌
I like it when a UA-cam video deliverers only the facts based on the title of the video in a clear English voice with no background music to distract for the information being delivered ... I rate this video 5 stars and I have subscribed to your channel ...
WELCOME! Welcome! welcome, to my channel, Alfred! I hope you will stick around. I have lots to share in a very honest way.
My goodness, Alfred. And I thought the world of UA-cam would think I was the most boring person with a channel before I got one. I like to give information and to teach. Sometimes, I must admit, I may get a little over zealous but I do try to stick to the truth about what I am sharing. Thanks for giving me such a high rating. I have other videos also. Let me know what you think. I do enjoy hearing from my viewers. As a subscriber to my channel, you are called a Berta Jay Trouper (I know, it's spelled wrong); take a look at this video when you can to understand how I came up with that:
ua-cam.com/video/bejee5bsjw8/v-deo.html
And again, Alfred 😊
Great video. Very educational and informative, I actually learned more about these veggies. My favorite part about these vegetables is that they are so crunchy!
You ARE, TopKek, without a doubt, my kind of woman...I love the crunch also. It keeps me coming back for more of these veggies. Thanks for your comment ❤️
I love you Miss Berta!
Thank you for the love, Deana. You are precious to say such kind words to me. Have a peaceful and joy-filled day. 😊 ❤️
I love all of them except for radishes. thank you for telling us about the ground mustard. I bet that mustard is great with the collards
Radishes do have a special taste. You either like them or you don't. It's okay. There are lots of other 'c' veggies you can eat, 😌♥️
Cruciferous vegetables are so good for over-all health. Thank you, Berta Jay! I will share this in my FB timeline.
You're so welcome, Amy. I really appreciate you sharing this video with your FB friends. Life can be more enjoyable when you know the things you can do to make it better; it's up to each one to learn what he/she needs to do that. I just want to help 😊 ❤️
I'm not fond of most of those veggie's but thank you for the recommendation to add ground mustard. I didn't know that. You are a wealth of knowledge.
You're welcome, Sandra. I love to learn and when I do find out interesting facts, I have to pass it on to help you and others. Though you may not be fond of the 'c' veggies, I want to challenge you to try one you kinda like, once a week. Your body will thank you. I appreciate your honesty, Sandra. 😍
Thanks Berta I David had to listen. He is determined to eat healthy
Forgive me for taking so long reply, but it was so good for me to see your comment. Thanks you dear Tree...my dear little clam 🥰
Fantastic video! I eat cruciferous vegetables everyday. I never knew radish, watercress and turnipy vegetables were part of the same family, and the same about adding mustard!
wonderful video! Love the funny out takes at the end...LOL! Thanks a bunch (smile!) ~watching from Norfolk, Virginia~
Hey, reedblessed. Glad to have you watching me from Norfolk, VA! My son still had the camera on. I really didn't know that. He is a funny one, that child of mine. Thanks for your comment. 😊
Thank you so much for this great video! It truly amazes me how the really beneficial videos on the internet are not so popular.
You're welcome, Mohammed. I am so thankful that what I said was beneficial to you. Though I enjoy hearing from the viewers, I don't do what I do just to get views! I love what I do! I share what I have experienced and what I have learned and am learning because I desire to help as many people as I can with the little bit I've learned. Thank you for your kind, but humbling words of encouragement. 🥦🥬😊
Thank you!
I did not realize "radishes" were a cruciferous vegetable. Good to know.
I understand that when they are cooked, they taste exactly like potatoes!
Thank you, Barbara. I want to give them a try. I appreciate you for letting me know. 👍🏽♥️
Here in Mexico we cook them in pozzole. They add SO MUCH FLAVOR!
Thank you for this information. So so helpful. I live in the mountains oc Ghana and can't get broccoli, sprouts and most of the other veg u mentioned. I can get cabbage and we have kontomire (the leaves of the coco yam). How often can i eat cabbage to be beneficial.
Keep ur videos coming, beautiful lady❤️
Hi Ms Berta! We enjoy a large variety of vegetables and enjoy experimenting with them in different recipes. Our favorite way to enjoy kale is in green smoothies. Some of the other cruciferous veggies we enjoy in salads or stir-fry dishes or steamed and served over brown rice. Excellent information you've shared with your viewers! Kudos to Evan for another video production!!
Thanks so much, Pat. I'll be sure to tell Evan. He does have a passion for doing these videos. It's so nice when you say something. It really makes him want to learn more about being a videographer and doing a better job...his chosen life's work. Thanks for your comment about the 'c' veggies. They are so versatile and delicious. I appreciate your encouragemnt. ❤️ 🥦
Great video. Thank you for the information!!! Definitely helpful.
You're so welcome, Jeremy. 👍🏾 Sorry for the delay in replying to your comment. I am glad that what I learn and share is a benefit to you...that is my goal: to help others learn so they can live healthier and better life. 🥦🥬
Fry your radishes in slices bacon grease like you would making fried potatoes it is amazing
Thanks so much for sharing. ❤️
Thanks for the Information
Nicely explained 😇
Thanks so much, Ramesh. I love to be encouraged for the things I share. It lets me know that my content is good. I appreciate your kind words. Thanks, again. 😊
I was researching what to eat during the different phases of my cycles apparently cruciferous veggies are good during the follicular phase . I didnt know what they were so here I am , needless to say I am well informed now thanks miss berta .
Good Dear Berta, You said in another video that you live in New England. I live in NH. Do you have an address or post office box to receive fan mail? I don’t mean an email although that’d be great too; I mean an actual snail mail addy. Hope so. I was so happy to hear you live relatively close by. TTYL. Loved the outtakes🤣
Probably not SO healthy- but I have recently developed a real affection for cole slaw! I make it with Olive oil mayo and lots of vinegar.. so will definitely add in the mustard. Thanks for the great info!
You're so welcome, Patrice. It's important you make better food choices and cole slaw is better than French fries, right? 🤔 🥰
Thank you Berta jay... I did not know the mustard trick -I will start to add this every time I make these amazing cruciferous vegetables
Yes, Plant, I learned that little trick from Dr. Michael Greger. Check out his video that I shared in the Description box below this video. You'll learn other things about these wonderful veggies. 😀 ❤️
You are exactly correct! I love these veggies and mustard greens and seeds as well. I slow cook, sautee in a wok, make soups and stews, and raw as salad greens. Kale is amazing, all of them are amazing.
Yay! I am so glad you agree with the facts about these amazing vegetables. Thanks so much for your support and confirmation👍🏾 🥬.
Blessings
And to you as well, Carolyn.

Hey Hey Hey Berta Jay....You have actually inspired me to call a dietician to become a better eater and possibly ask questions about becoming a vegetarian. I have eaten meat all my life but as I age, I see and hear the benefits of eating more veggies than meat. But I have to find out how to do it and how much to stay healthy. My hubby perfers meats more than veggies...but even he at times will include veggies on his supper dish and also he is eating more salads. Thank you for your weekly inspirations of information and you positive delight with us.
Wow, wow and wow again, Barb!! 😮 I am so glad that I urged you to move in that direction. I know you won't be sorry you made that call to a dietician. Your life is going to change for the good...you'll see. Thanks so much for sharing with me...I so appreciate it. Have a pleasant day🥰
@@bertajay Berta I have been using your explanation of the dry mustard on green beans, broccoli etc. Thank you so much for informing us. All these years I had no idea that I wasn't getting the full nutrition out of my green veggies but now I can. Thanks and have a fantastic week.
@@bfl4202 You're so welcome, Barb. Now remember, that ground mustard is only for the 'c' veggies, okay? 😉
@@bertajay Berta...Oh ok...Cauliflower, broccoli sprouts, kale, radishes, etc. ...thanks
Brussels sprouts are my fave too, Berta. And I never had them as a kid. My Dad didn't like them so Mom never made them. But she did make nearly all the others so we were quite a veggie family. Kale is new for me too, as an adult. I doubt that many of our generation had kale as kids but I'm glad it's coming into its own now. Thanks for the info re mustard powder - I never heard that before but love mustard & any excuse to eat it. Take care & thanks ❤️🥕❤️
I do love to share [teach] others things l know and believe. I have been known to have 2-3 servings of these 'c' veggies in a day. Kale has been a fave of mine for a long time. We share similar tastes. 😁 I love hearing from you, Jane. Thanks for sharing🥦
Trying to read up on the health benefits of food and getting recipes and the whole deal can be soooooo overwhelming, BUT, you make it interesting and easier on the mind, lol. Thanks so much. You are such a sweet person and I’m so glad I came across you on my ipad! If I had a pick of someone I could meet up with and just sit down and talk to, it would be you! Luv ya!
Thank you so much, Elaine. My heart is truly warmed and humbled by your kind words. If you met me, I hope you'd see I am just a regular person who really cares about others and wants to share what I've learned with them. Perhaps one day we will meet. Thank you again for your heart-felt words to me 🥰
Thanks for the information from Dr. Gregor. He is great! Thanks for sharing about the mustard powder. I had never heard that, but I’m going to try it. I love your videos, Berta Jay!
Thank you for your encouragement and support, Maurine. I do love sharing with you Troupers. ♥️😊
You my dear friend and Evan crack me up! I love all these veggies! Can you show how to cook more greens? Thank you both so very much for a wonderful laugh after a long day!🥰🥰😎
You know but I'll say again: you are a blessing to me and Evan. I love how you convey your thoughts to us. Thanks for all of your support and encouragement. Talk to you soon.😎 😍 🤓
Berta, for the first time ever I will be growing Sorrel in my gArden this year. It’s a tart, lemony green that is used a lot in Eastern European/Russian food. I grew up with it and miss it. Packed with nutrients. You should look into it.
Thanks so much for letting me know, 519. I'll see if I can find it when the farmer's markets open this year. Thanks for your comment. I enjoy the taste of lemon so I probably would like it. ❤️
Berta Jay I hope you get a chance to try it. If not, you are always welcome to stop by my house and get some LOL
@@519forestmonk9 Thanks for the invitation, 519. You are a dear. ❤️
Thank you Berta Jay! This was very informative. I didn't realize many of the benefits you mentioned; I just knew C veggies were good for you! Kale and cabbage are my faves. 5 servings daily? I better get to crunchin' !! 😄

So glad it helped you. Sometimes I can get a little long-winded when I learn something I think is valuable and I want to share it. Really, I am thankful you found this one helpful. Hi Berta Jay, thanks for the info... I have been eating C veggies everyday and didn’t know it. I have collard greens and kale everyday but didnt know they were Cveggies. Now I gotta start putting the dry mustard on them...Thanks for sharing!
I am so glad to hear that, Connie. Amazing when we don't even know when we're doing good for our bodies and we then find out...it's a nice feeling, eh? 👍🏾

Had no idea about the need & importance of adding dry
mustard/mustard seed. Thank you so much. Will immediately start to that with the 🍋 olive oil & vinegar that I usually use.
Hope that you & family are having a good 🍀 week. 🐾❤️
( Am trying to get 🐾Mia to eat broccoli flowerets, but she will only eat with cheese 😅.)
I am always so thankful when I share something that really helps others. Learning more about these veggies helped ME, SO I just had to share this information. A little mustard powder does wonders for our bodies when we use it with 'c' veggies. Thanks for your comment, Colleen. Our cat loved green beans, but not broccoli. Not sure why. Perhaps you could try some green beans... just a thought. Have a pleasant day 😀 🥦
Loved this!! Thank you Berta!! I love all these, but you reminded me to buy radishes & Brussels sprouts next store trip. 🕊🌱🥦🥬❤️🕊

You know, this reminded me of a book you would love, if you don’t know it already. Thank you so much, Anahid. I really want to find that book. I will begin at my local library. You are a wealth of knowledge, my friend. Love hearing from you. Did you see the bloopers at the very end? My son's idea. 🤭

Berta Jay Yes, he’s very quirky & makes learning veganism fun. I appreciate how he shows the actual science behind what he states.
@@marirose756 That's what I enjoy also about him. 😀
Thank you
Hi, can your ingredients be listed. Thanks
Not sure I understand...what ingredients are you speaking about? This video was about eating cruciferous veggies. Help me understand what you mean. Thanks. ☺
BTW, you can cook radishes and that does take most of the bite out of them. You can boil them, roast them, saute them, etc. If left whole, they can take a very long time to cook and they really shrivel up to about half their size. The consistency of cooked radishes is not very appealing, in my opinion. It's very fibery and watery and kind of weird. I really experimented with radishes, when I was doing the low-carb diet, and looking for substitutions for things like potatoes. They are NOT a fair substitute for potatoes (shudder!), but they can be enjoyable, when roasted with some salt, garlic, black pepper, or other seasonings. I'd cut them in half (and let them sit for about 45 minutes, if you saw my previous comment), before roasting them. Blessings!
Ma’am these veg suger n colestrol friendly
Ma’am lady finger can take easily Uric asid patient or not
Please explain...I do not understand what you are trying to say.🤔
Lovely lady, but 5 servings a day!!
You forgot beets!! You can eat the leaves of the beet too.
I do like beets and enjoy their leaves as well; however, beets are not cruciferous. This is what I found about them:
Beets are part of the Chenopodiaceae family, also known as the Goosefoot family. Other members of this botanical family include spinach, Swiss chard and quinoa. Plants within this group are typically rich in calcium.
Thank you for sharing, DiamoNdaRough510.👍🏾
