I just recently started taking kickboxing classes with a local club with really good instructors (trainers of some european champions). Being a semi-late starter at the age of 38, I've found these fighTips videos invaluable when learning the basics, like hip movement for example. On the latest class I actually got positive remarks on how I twist my supporting leg in a roundhouse kick for example. The foundations of that came from your videos Shane, from way back before I even started taking the classes. Thanks for the amazing FREE content, I'll be sticking around for a while since I'm completely hooked to this.
Hey bro. I know you just gettn started in the fight game and you a little old too. Just be careful not to get hurt and Shane is a wanna be bro. Look at some liftn vids.

Tip especially for beginners + those with weak joints (due to hyper mobility or temporary weakness for example): Be VERY careful when trying to perform the first throw, I dislocated my left knee when doing it. Because I had jumper’s knee and I caught the kick too far out by the foot leading to extreme weight being put on them when I threw it with my feet planted a bit too firmly while accidentally turning my body.
4 Ways to Catch Kicks 1. Throw & Kick - Step to side with rear leg first when catching kick to take away steam off kick. Hold by ankle and throw it, and kick at the end. Don’t turn body when throwing kick. 2. Lift & Push - Same thing when catching like #1, but this time push them, lift up leg as you push, chase them down, and counter with roundhouse. Can’t step more than 3 steps in Muay Thai with holding leg. 3. Shin Sweep (Front Shin Sweep) - Catch kick like #1, step in, hook low with rear leg, lift caught leg high as you sweep the support leg. Make sure when you do the sweep, you do the pushing motion on the shoulder, face, chest, etc. Depending on stature and range of opponent, with bigger fighter and far away, you kick their supporting leg out, but with smaller fighter close in, you hook their ankle with your ankle. 4. Step in and Sweep (with Opposite Leg) - Catch kick like #1, step forward with right foot, push on head with right hand with collar tie, and as you push on their head with collar tie and step with right foot, step with your left and pull them over top with left tripping leg. Only twist your upper body, not your whole body and do this in one motion.
@Ishaq Hussain I do not use my brain. I just grab that leg and sweep them to the floor really hard. Or throw them on their head really hard. You do not want to kick again after getting thrown on your head. That hurts your brain 😂😂😂
@Ishaq Hussain I assure you my good man your teacher was taking MT with me. Who knows bro. There are many crossovers in martial arts. Plus I never took tkd so I have no clue. I just get bored and like to make comments to pass time.
@Ishaq Hussain I was joking witg you. I do not know your instructor. What I mean to say is many martial arts share similar techniques such as leg traps. I also took karate and also kung fu. I learned similar leg traps to what I learned in MT. So I believe tkd also has leg traps as well. I would also think it would depend on if the tkd is based on Olympic style or combat. If it is based in combat, you would had learned more catches, throws and sweeps as I believe these cannot be demonstrated in compitetion.
Hey shane In counter and kick : - What if you throw a spinning back fist, when he throws your leg to the side?🤔🤔 Bro, you taught us this in a video you uploaded.
Arno Victor Dorian That Would Take An Insane Amount Of Skill To Get That Timing And Momentum Just Right To Pull That Off Plus There’s A Kick’s Worth Of Distance Between Them
this is about countering the roundhouse kick, the backfist video is about countering this counter and I wouldnt recommend avoiding it by pulling back and then throwing a kick. you can easily go off balance, you're too heavy on your back foot and your target is too far away at that point. *this is exactly why they always say swing your arm but always keep the other hand up on guard*
My friend tried to throw a round house when we were playing around in high school. I caught it, and swept his left foot with an Ouchi-gari that I learned in Judo. And landed on top of him as if I was gonna ground and pound him. 😂🤷🏻♂️ (and then my then-girlfriend got mad at me because she was more worried about him...then she cheated on me with him.) : (
You can catch a leg and throw an opponent over your shoulder using his leg as a lever. You can even completely fuck up his leg in several ways if you want.
I was always taught (SOF combatives, NOT sport) to try and take it a step further by (*depending on your options and a bunch of other variables*) driving a hammerfist or an elbow strike into the quad, ideally just above the patella. To take it further, options include: hyper-extend their ankle if you can trap while you twist/rotate the foot in the opposite direction of the way they fall to blow their knee. Or, use their ankle as a fulcrum, top of the foot against your ribs, after trapping the lower leg, then rotating to hyper-extend/take their balance while sharply pulling up to dislocate or fracture the ankle. Or, kick them in the balls if you can't sweep, then stomp the non-kicking leg right above the patella; to the inside being even more preferable for nerve damage, and hopefully cause a fracture.
I’m fairly sure most of the video is sports based, doing any of the things you describe will Get you banned in most martial arts (although you might Get away with some in mma) So please don’t do any of that in muay thai, you’ll be banned and severely injure your opponent
Bro in wushu sanda everyone should counter the round kick by taking it from down not to take the kick and then catch By the way good video I am supporting you and I respect all your fans
I think that you should try sparring with or studying with some Sanda/Sanshou fighters. They have great takedowns and sweeps. Similar to Muay Thai, but very different.
Please Explain: I understand the core mechanics of the maneuver, the small step to reduce impact, catching high in the armpit...however when "catching" a kick I feel I am very vulnerable to being hit in the ribs. I could easily catch low on accident. Furthermore, good kicks come with speed and a high amount of power. How can you be sure that this maneuver will not end up in you being roundhouse kicked into the ribs ending up with broken bones or otherwise massive damage? (especially true if your not wearing shin guards)
You have to do a little step out to the side. Then you can catch the kick, because it doesn't have much Power if you stepping out. Otherwise you can stay on your place, Block the kick and catch with an underhook from your other Arm :)
They're legal. So are punches. When you're standing and not clinching it's the opponents fault if your kick or punch lands to their spine or back of the head.
gonna be honest, that method for catching kicks doesnt look like it stops you from actually getting kicked at all. other videos regarding kick catching all seem to involve blocking it with one arm and catching with the other. it seems hard to catch a kick when it comes in at full force into your body and there is nothing in the way to stop it.
What about stepping/kicking the supporting knee once you catch the roundhouse. In theory atleast this seems to be really devastating. I havent seen it done in MMA though. Is it illegal or what? I mean you could in theory break the knee in half.
@Ishaq Hussain Wouldnt recommend using this shit on a simple bully tbh. Might do more harm to yourself than the bully in the long run. And it appears it has happened to you. I myself have just swept the supporting leg on ''semi friendly'' fight. I wouldnt dare to kick the knee because....i dunno... common sense. Something just tells me it does too much damage. Or maybe its those damn crazy hollywood fighting flicks....who knows. Then again i really havent been in a ''real fight''. All the fights i have had in my life are between me and someone i know for over some stupid shit and in this situation you really actually dont want to hurt the other guy.....not seriously atleast. I've had 1 occasion where the roof really blew off and i was about to hurt someone real bad but thankfully i got a grip on that particular occasion. After that incident i started to believe that blind rage actually does exist.
It's just something to work on, I started with taekwondo moving on to wrestling so By the time I got to Muay Thai my balance was pretty solid, practice man you got this :)
Seren Regalado thanks man, it’s literally about practice and reputations, I’ll never give up. I’m exceptionally well at round house kicks but it’s that knee I’m having trouble with lol
The last sweep, if you are close enough to your opponent, try to take their base by bumping your thigh against theirs and jolt them hard with your free hand (instead of twisting your upper body) if you are lucky this can send them up then slammed down hard. This really fs people up if done right.
the sweep honestly looks like you could get punched in the face if you put your try and handle their shoulder, to me i feel like it would be better to just sock them in the face, or just do a really hard counter low kick, although i could be wrong here im not a professional
Well most people who get in street fights proably dont know how to throw a good kick in the first place. How do you catch a teep to the chin or the groin?

The last one is like judo's de ash harai, so you need to put your hips forward, which makes all your body strong.
