Hi Marie! Today I made my first water-based lotion thanks to your instructions on Winter Wonderland Lotion. Since I am in Germany, I am lacking the emulsifying waxes sold in North America. So I had to use a water-phase emulsifier "Cetearyl Glucoside" at 1% and Cetearyl Alcohol at 5% for oil phase (adding 1+5= 6g of your complete emulsifying wax recommendation). I was preparing for a along emulsifying process, but really the lotion thickened up in a minute. Considering how easy it was to whip it, I recommend you look into this emulsifying system - just one extra ingredient, but tons of time saved. You rock! I love your site and recipes (loving coconut citrus cleansing balm) THANK YOU for all that educational work!
Very cool-it sounds like you made your very own Montanov 68 (swiftcraftymonkey.blogspot.co.uk/2014/05/emulsifiers-montanov-68.html). Thanks so much for watching and DIYing with me! :)
I have a local bee farm here in Rhode Island and plan to purchase my bee ingredients there so I can try this one. I've only made the basic lotion recipe so far with different scents. Lavender seems to be my favorite. Love your book and recepies. Hope to eventually get through them all.
Hey Marie, royal jelly is perplexing me lately as its so delicate...I know you know your stuff, does royal jelly preserve its benefits this way? Or should we use powdered royal jelly (which probably has lost some of its benefits...) I can't figure out how to keep this ingredient as powerful as it is in its freshest state...its just such a shame if it does lose its power
Hello I have made this lotion a few times but have had it blow up on me. Not sure if I didn't put enough preservative in it or if it was the home made propolis tincture I made. I just made it again yesterday but use a tincture commercially made. I love your videos and blog. I have a hard time watching other DIY UA-camrs. it seems to me they just throw a bunch of stuff in a pot without explaining what they are doing. I made and gave many pots of Cleopatra's secret balm to friends and family. Thank you so much for all you do.
A few questions pls. Can i use rice bran oil? Also, what is the shelf life for this lotion since it contains water? If only a short time, what other preservative would you recommend for a longer shelf life? Pls and thank you ahead of time. Love your book &videos!!
I've got some links for you :) You can learn more above olive oil and potential substitutions here: www.humblebeeandme.com/project/olive-oil/ You can learn more about general carrier oil substitutions here: www.humblebeeandme.com/a-guide-to-carrier-oil-substitutions/ You can learn more about shelf life here: www.humblebeeandme.com/faqs/long-will-______-last-shelf-life/ Do note that while this contains water, it also contains a sturdy broad spectrum preservative 😉 It should be good for at least 8-12 months unless you contaminate it very aggressively (please don't spit in it, etc lol).
Typically speaking I'd put more expensive ingredients in a facial lotion than in a body lotion-things like hyaluronic acid, vitamin C, etc. :) That's about it! There's no huge reason you couldn't use one product for everything, but a face lotion everywhere would probably be a bit more expensive.
www.humblebeeandme.com/faqs/what-can-i-use-instead-of-water/ If you don't want to use water in your creations, this isn't the DIY for you. Check out the partner "Cleopatra's Secret" balm instead :)
Hey Marie! I made the cream and I love it - BUT - it leaves a white residue :( The skin absorbs it but only after a few minutes. The more you massage it into the skin, the whiter it gets. Why does this happen and how can I solve this issue?
That's called "soaping" & you can learn more here: chemistscorner.com/cosmeticsciencetalk/discussion/322/lotion-whitening-on-rub-in-possible-sources-and-preventions :)
Every time I see this name, I think of labdanum, which I knew was used back in ancient Egypt. So I might add that instead of lavender. But lotion.....love lotion. I need to get more btms 50. I've been to busy with my pretty oxides and micas. Lol.
Hey Marie, what are your thoughts on Leucidal Liquid Complete as a broad spectrum preservative? I think it's basically an improvement on the original Leucidal since it is broader in that it combats yeast as well, and am considering using it in a lotion. Not sure if you've tried it at all?
I've never used it, and my go-to resource to learn more (www.makingskincare.com/preservatives/) doesn't have it listed yet, either. The suppliers sure make it sound good, but they usually do :P
Hi. Your videos are informative and nice. I am from India. Some of your ingredients are difficult to get here. So please give some alternatives in your videos.
Please click through to the blog post where you will always find more information :) However, there is nothing I can do to ensure global availability of all ingredients unless I only wanted to work with water :/
Optiphen plus should be ok, though I've never worked with it before. Make sure to follow proper usage recommendations, and be careful working with it as it can split emulsions (www.makingskincare.com/preservatives/). Happy making!
I'm not touching lightening stuff: www.humblebeeandme.com/faqs/kind-recipes-will-not-appear-humblebee/. The active ingredients an actual whitening concoction will use use are not suitable for hobbiest DIYers.
A great base to add whatever Eo's you like! I don't have germal ~ would optifen be OK? I'm imagining it would, just have to follow their recommendations for the correct amount to use.

my lotion turned out so good except one thing:((: My pollen ended up not dissolving all the way and i get little bits here and there when using. i should have sifted it before but i thought i powdered it and mixed it in pretty good. oh well, it doesnt bother me much as i use it at night anyway.
Hmm, that is odd indeed; I would think that it would eventually dissolve if it was even powdered a little thanks to all the water in the lotion. Perhaps in a few days it will be smooth?
Humblebee & Me i keep wondering about my pollen.lol its not completely yellow like yours and has dark bits on some of the clods and those are what seem to not dissolve completely right away. But you're right, the bits in the lotion have so far that I've seen dissolved. i cant feel the bits when using anymore. But i tried dissolving a small amount in a little vial and that day and there is still un dissolved bits. what could be the reason? i know pollen is going to be different depending on where it comes from, so maybe it just has some denser pieces needing more time to dissolve? i dont have any bits in my cleanser so idk what happened with my lotion.lol im so glad and really appreciate that you take the time to respond and help me with my questions. idk what i would do without you. i have a few chemists in my family, but you seem to be of more help than they have been.lol they aren't really into cosmetics, but you would think they wo
Hmm, I wonder if those dark clods might be bits of propolis-that stuff isn't soluble in much of anything, and is sticky and cloddy. Hmm. I have some larger grain pollen and different bits are different shades of yellow and brown, so it's likely nothing to be concerned about :)

Oooh, lovely! Local bee products are the best 🐝 Happy making and thanks for DIYing with me!
You are simply amazing!!! I bought your book. Please keep making videos like this.
Thank you so much for buying my book! :D

Thanks! Happy making :D
Hi Marie! Another great video! Question: I have Royal Jelly powder. How would I make the extract that is needed in the Cool Down Phase? TIA!
Love the sound of this recipe, just ordered the bee stuff so I can try it. Will this lotion work in a pump bottle?
I wouldn't recommend trying it in a pump bottle as it's quite thick :) Happy making!

I'm so glad you're enjoying it! Happy making :)
Love it! Thank you so much for this recipe!
Thanks, Jin! :)
Hi can you please let me know where do you buy royal jelly extract and at what stage tincture has to be added? Thanks for your videos.
Hi Marie....
I'm so confused...
What is the different about body lotion and facial lotion (I mean for the formulation)?...
Thanks Marie 😊😊😊

@@HumblebeeAndMeThanks a lot Marie 😊😊😊😊
Please make her perfume as well

Oh swoon... labdanum. I'm SO bummer NDA stopped carrying it! I don't know what I'll do when I run out.

Namaste Humblebee,
How Long will this last with preservative...?
I've got a whole article on this :) www.humblebeeandme.com/faqs/long-will-______-last-shelf-life/

Hello, I stumbled upon your blog (argam serum) AND I stalked and love all your recipes. Does this lotion has shelf life? Thank you😘
I've answered this in my FAQ: www.humblebeeandme.com/faqs/long-will-______-last-shelf-life/ :)
You said you no longer put food in your formulas as they are impossible to preservd. May I know why honey is not considered "food" here.
I've found small amounts of honey (less than ~4%) to be ok :)
Could you use optiphen nd for a preservative???
Optiphen plus should be ok, though I've never worked with it before. Make sure to follow proper usage recommendations, and be careful working with it as it can split emulsions (www.makingskincare.com/preservatives/). Happy making!

I was wondering, what kind of honey did you use in this formula? 😎
I don't really remember-likely something from the Canadian prairies :)
I make original recipie and i Love it
Beautiful! Thank you so much for DIYing with me :)
please what is the benefits of the royal jelly?

Where is the recipe linc for this?
Links are in the description box below the video :)
which brand of EMULSIFYING WAX do you use?
I don't remember for this project; either Emulsimulse/Ritamulse, Polwax, Emulsifying Wax NF, or BTMS 50. Any will work!
I cover my water and oil phase with plastic wrap. I cover the oil phase to prevent boiling water from jumping into the oil phase.
Good idea!
Can you make vegan jelly soap like you know who?
Like... Voldemort?
The company who is hand made, the products are shelf stable and the name rhymes with "Mush", lol.
