Emulsifier wax contains cetearyl alcohol, which is a mix of cetyl and stearyl alcohols in some proportions. The proportion depends on the supplier. What you do is basically shift the proportion to your need. If so, maybe switching the supplier might help you to skip this step. Also, you might want to calculate HLB values of your emulsifier and oil phase. If they don't match - that could be a reason of why the ulsion is not that great and leaves a residue feeling on the skin.

Hi Marie.I have a question about separation. I have read all your FAQs on emulsion and still can't figure out the reason why my leave in conditioner is separating. It's a simple recipe : Water phase: Water, glycerin, aloe. The e wax (btms 25) usage rate is 20% of the oil phase. The cool down is less than 10% (2.5%% to be exact). Preservative is Germall Plus and I blended for 3 minutes before allowing to cool. What am I doing wrong? I really can't figure it out. I find myself going back on forth on your website but still clueless.

Thanks for being such a fun educator!! I'm still confused about Emulsifying Wax w/o the NF monograph. I purchased Emulsifying Wax before I knew to look for the NF and its INCI is listed as Cetostearyl Alcohol & Polysorbate 60, precisely as you describe in your description on the video and encyclopedia. (THANKS SO MUCH FOR THE AMAZING ENCYLOPEDIA!!! I'M LEARNING SO MUCH!!!). Anyway, I've made a few recipes with it in place of EW-NF and it seems to be working as expected. Can I rest assured that my Emulsifying Wax is compatible with recipes calling for EW-NF? It's a Milliard product if that makes a difference. Thanks again. I will keep making with it and keeping good notes in my log book. :D I'll definitely look for the NF on the label next order!
Hi Erica! Thank you so much for watching ❤️ Yes, I'd go ahead and use that as if it is Emulsifying Wax NF :) When you grab a bag of some NF-labelled stuff, try a blind test with a simple lotion formulation and see if you can feel a difference-I doubt you will. Finding anyone on youtube who does something one needs is almost a crap shoot. I am dealing with a condition most have but most are not impacted much by unless they, like me, have a broken immune system and anyone can at any time of their lives (some recover to full health, most do not, disability follows ). Using barrier creams that need MORE wax to safely block skin disease/conditions are useless and even damaging as they allow the condition to spread like wildfire -- even to sepsis (me twice) or death for some. Thanks for the info -- even if I might not be able to understand it all, I will do my BEST to figure out how to make a balm as thick as carmex or thicker, the same consistency AND has the correct ingredients that work on bodywide damaged skin.
Hi! Nice summary video about the ingredient. Although after watching it I left with some questions 😅 I have watched a lot of your videos recently and noticed that you don't mention anything about HLB of emulsifiers/oils, although it's essential characteristic to balance for best stable emulsions. Same here. Polysorbates are usually treated as solubilizers than emulsifiers because of their HLB value, but you say it's a main emulsifier. I wonder how stable emulsions would be than... Also, cetearyl alcohol is a mix of stearyl and cetyl alcohols in different proportions (which are not standardized and depend on the supplier), therefore HLB value will be different of each wax. There are several substitutions for the wax proposed, but are they really can be incorporated into a formula without any change in the formula? Again, HLB of different emulsifiers are different, so oil phase should be different... Anyway, I would really love to hear your opinion on this (maybe a topic for one another great video?)
I almost never use a blender with ewax NF, just several good rounds of stirring with a spatula or spoon, and I've only had one emulsion break on me. It magically came back together a week later when I shook it up!
Hi! The idea of "comedogenic" or not really is nowhere near as simple as religiously avoiding every ingredient that gets a "bad" rating on a comeodogenicity rating chart. Comedogenic ratings really aren't all that helpful when determining if a product (rather than a pure ingredient) will clog human pores, so formulating something that is "non comedogenic" is not as simple as just avoiding a set list of ingredients on a chart. I recently tried a commercial moisturizer from a well-known that was advertised as non comedogenic and it broke me out horribly, so even when something is supposed to be non comedogenic, there are zero guarantees. Lab Muffin made a great video about it titled "Why Comedogenicity Ratings Are Kinda BS " ( ua-cam.com/video/-wz__FPq5kE/v-deo.html ). The title really says it all, but the general gist is: your skin isn't made of rabbit ears + the overall formulation really matters. Happy making!
Hi Marie, so cool that you posted this video today I was searching your channel for emulsifier videos last night! Would you recommend emulsifying wax NF for use in a lightweight face moisturizer/primer? Or is it better suited to body product formulations?

Aw man I was really hoping you would mention Soft and Silky Emulsifying Wax! 😭 can that be used as a 100% replacement for EWNF? Thank you for this video! Learned a lot!
Yes it can she also has a video talking about different wax and that one is included
Which emulsifier way do you recommend for hair
I love the BTMS's! I've shared deep dives on those, too. ua-cam.com/play/PL4cZgaY9j7fMGUXks0RajQ-LGoHn4jXnD.html
Hi Marie! Can emulsifying waxes be used to emulsify water-soluble botanical liquid extracts into solid lotions bars (oils/beeswax based)? I read all the EW entires in your blog, but I am new to this and must admit I am more confused now. 😅 I would appreciate any help pointing me in the right direction!
Hello Marie! I m a great fan of urs I follow ur guidelines n they r very helpful! I have a question why there is graining of shea butter and how to overcome it!
Will be waiting for ur reply!
Loads of luv from INDIA!
I did an entire video & blog post on this last summer :) Happy making!
Thank you very much 🙏🙏🙏
All your formulations are really good. Can you please share the recipe for Kiehl's calendula serum infused cream.
Thanks in advance.
I'll keep it in mind-thanks for the suggestion!
Hi Marie. I bought MakersCream Blend emulsifying wax that I thought I found in one of your recipes, but can’t find it now. Can you help?
Look up Glyceryl Stearate (and) PEG-100 Stearate in the Humblebee & Me DIY Encyclopedia (www.humblebeeandme.com/diy-encyclopedia/) for a long list of formulations I've shared using that ingredient :)
Hivery nice crystal clear explanation
Thanks
Thanks so much I really appreciate this video
You are so welcome! ❤️ Thanks for watching!
Hello Marie. My name is Beaundra. I would like to talk with you. Do you have an email that we can correspond through? I have started a hair care line. I'm allergic to coconut oil so my hair care line does not include this ingredient. But it's very hard to find other ingredients that do not include or are derived from coconut or palm oil. Can you help me out? Thank you for your help.
hello, can I also use Emulsifying Wax GMS ? is it just the same?
It is not the same; GMS = glyceryl monostearate (aka glyceryl stearate). It's discussed at 10:49 in this video. You can also look it up in the Humblebee & Me DIY Encyclopedia (www.humblebeeandme.com/diy-encyclopedia/). Happy making!
@@HumblebeeAndMe so in your video, what will happen if I subtitute the NF with emulsifying wax GMS?
Thanks for DIYing with me, and happy making :)
Hi what emulsifing wax would you suggest to use in bath melts? Thanks
That's a big "it depends", I'm afraid :)
Im glad to hear that bc i have the E wax NF 💋 where you get the white container from?
I'm not sure exactly which white container you mean, but chances are pretty good it's from YellowBee :)
@@HumblebeeAndMe the first container you showed
@@magnisumchannel Can you share the time stamp?
@@HumblebeeAndMe 1:14
@@magnisumchannel Definitely YellowBee :)
Thanks for sharing 💕✨
I know e-wax is not natural.. but if you had to choose the “most natural” E-Wax, which one would it be? 🤔
I mention two natural e-waxes in the video :)
Hi Marie could i ask you to recommend books that talk about chemical ingredients and bases of cosmetic formulations to me? And thanks in advance 😊

Thanks a lot 🤍
Thank you for this video! So is the emulsifying wax on Brambleberry Emulsifying Wax NF?
Does the INCI match? :) If yes, then yes!
@@HumblebeeAndMe thank you so much!
Can emulsifying wax work with cetearyl alcohol in a recipe?
Yes, of course :)
Thanks.
Is the humble bee encyclopedia available to buy?
No-it's totally free and frequently updated, so a static copy wouldn't make a lot of sense :) If you want to help support free formulation education (like the encyclopedia!) + get exclusive benefits like behind-the-scenes videos and beautiful printables, please consider becoming a Humblebee & Me patron ❤️Learn more at patreon.com/MarieRayma. It'll depend on the formulation; I recommend reading through the Humblebee & Me DIY Encyclopedia (www.humblebeeandme.com/diy-encyclopedia/) entries for both to learn more. Happy making!
Thank you. My body butter failed because plenty of fools online declare that glycerin is an emulsifier 😂😂 it is definitely not. ❤
Oh noooo! I remember reading the same thing when I first got started 😬 Can't believe that bit of info is still floating around over a decade later 🙈
Would love to hear your take THD
I'll keep it in mind-thanks for the suggestion!
Hi! Nice summary video about the ingredient. Although after watching it I left with some questions 😅
I have watched a lot of your videos recently and noticed that you don't mention anything about HLB of emulsifiers/oils, although it's essential characteristic to balance for best stable emulsions.
It is SO forgiving! 😄
I love your videos, but it's almost too much information. I get confused as I am a beginner in lotion making, and am not confident in formulating.
Does emulsifying wax dry out your skin?
No.
@@HumblebeeAndMe Thank you for your answer! I'm guessing its not carcinogenic either right?
@@thebutterflywizardess8042 I have no safety or health concerns about it :)
@@HumblebeeAndMe Thank you :)
Isn't Polawax comedogenic!
Nice
Thanks!
Hi Marie, so cool that you posted this video today I was searching your channel for emulsifier videos last night! Would you recommend emulsifying wax NF for use in a lightweight face moisturizer/primer? Or is it better suited to body product formulations?
Emulsifying Wax NF is lovely for lightweight facial moisturizers! You could use it instead of Polawax in this formulation: www.humblebeeandme.com/soothing-facial-lotion/. Happy making!
Usually, using of esters instead of plain oils gives a better, light feeling on the skin 👌
If you want to blend oil and water, definitely yes.
TO much work i prefer to buy ready base cream.
