- Steven Rinella breaks down how he and several members of the MeatEater crew contracted trichinosis after eating some questionably cooked bear meat on a recently aired episode of MeatEater.
The moral here is this: ALWAYS cook your bear meat to a minimum internal temperature of 160 degrees Fahrenheit!

My wife's a physician and she has always warned me about bear and rabbit meat, but she didn't give me the birds and the bees version that you just did.
Rabbit is usually cooked super long because of how tough it is. Probably why I've never really heard of any problems with it.
madcow3007 roasted rabbits rarely pass on trichinosis, especially if they’ve been frozen first. But pigs and wild hogs? My pigs are all pastured foragers, and I wouldn’t trust them cooked rare for anything.
I certainly hope it was consensual between the larvae!
never heard of rabbit causing issues thank god read this.
Rabbits can carry tularemia, be worse than any flu ever.
I love how your only takeaway from this is that you're immune to cannibals

As someone who worked in restaurant kitchens in the past. As soon as he said “picking through what he thought was done”, basically that means it’s not done.
Like a cook saying, I picked through under cooked chicken and served what I thought was done.
Unless the person eating you properly cooks you!!
Exactly! Just cook em medium well!
Ill take my chances with medium rare. Only way to cook human to get the full flavor.

It's funny I discovered your channel in the comment section of an outdoor survivalist earlier today ans now I see it again in the same day in the comments of Steven rinella just amazing small world isn't it
Note to self: Do not eat Steven Rinella. Got it!
avoiding infected meat wasn't the lesson here, the lesson was that if you DO eat steven then just make sure you cook him to an internal temperature of 160f
Winston Smif exactly! Lol. Also I'm probably more likely to eat human than bear...
137 according to USDA, 160 pertains to Salmonella
Primitive Tim naw you'd be ok as long as you cook him through
Wish I had heard this before I put in for my Steve Rinella tag. Cost me half a fortune!
Steven is just prepping for 2021, 2022 when everything goes crazy.
dat ending caveat
I had a good chuckle. Good show.
Good info on symptoms. Good lesson
I love how you find an upside to this!
"eat me and pay the price" probably the last thought going through that bears head lol
That's no illness to play around, I've seen a few cases of that as a Army Medic can do terrible damage to the heart and can be fatal or at the very least cause a debilitating disability for the rest of your life. Take care my friend and watch you six!
What sort of debilitating disabilities did you encounter in your victims as a Army Medic? And why would soldiers even be eating bears?
that's a nice little twist on the story right there at the end. thank you for that
Man Steven, you surprised me with that ending. I'm still cracking up!
Great Video!!! You constantly crack me up with the stories!! Absolutely an OOPS Moment!!!
I contracted trichinosis back in 2002 from dried wild boar sausage. I was six years of age and the doctors at the child hospital were so scared they ran blood tests on me every single day for two weeks straight. Getting stung was like good morning to me, but I lost fear from needles witch made me look like hero with the rest of the kids.
how did they treat it in the end?

Crazy, I thought these cases would be few. Thanks for sharing.
Funny how it appears like it wasn’t a big deal for you guys when it’s considered one of the more severe parasites in medical literature. Thanks for sharing and I hope you fully recovered.
modern medicine is great lol. anti-parasitic drugs can end all the symptoms but as he said in the video he does now technically permanently have living ringworms in cysts in most of his muscles, they just wont hurt him anymore. in the past before all of the drugs were figured out and for people who dont think to mention to their doctor that they ate a bear a month+ ago it can still be fatal though
@@JubioHDX it’s barely fatal though, isn’t it?
I would hate knowing my muscles are infested with worms. That would really suck.
Everyone has parasites like that. Including ppl who eat undercooked pork
a responsible video with very interesting story and info, thanks
That was unfortunate, but hilarious. I love your videos. Keep ‘em coming. From a fellow Michigander.
I’m never eating bear meat after watching this ... it’s been on my bucket list for YEARS now but this has me wayyyy to freaked out
Just dont cook it like a knucklehead
So remember boys and girls, never eat an undercooked Steve. It's best to slow roast him til he's falling off the bone, and then serve him with Texas BBQ sauce.

Bill heavey is hilarious
this is gross fucking burning bear and pork meat for now on
grand dini Why? Worlds difference between wild hog and bear from domesticated pork. Almost none of the farm raised pork has trichinosis as mentioned in the video.
I remember watching that episode and thinking “damn that bear meat looks pretty damn rare for bear” lol sure enough it wasn’t cooked properly as bear meat should always looked well done and maybe a little more well than well done with any hint of rare meat being sketchy
4:58 the bear speaks through Steve
Best video I've seen all day.
You never know next time your out hunting it might be the bear that get you. Then you can give it back to them and the cycle starts all over again.
Literally the happiest man with worms ever.
Finally watched the episode!
What a great friend
things like this is why i have trust issues when it comes to meat being fully cooked or not,
just cook it
There's worms crawling around in ppl, eating them from the inside 🤮. I only want the good bacteria 😤
you have worms inside you, everyone has. get over it...
Lol I love how he ended that story
"eat me and you'll end up with trichinosis"
Oh damn bro that blows! I just watched that episode. I even wondered what the hell trichinosis was when it was mentioned.
Why is a it so easy to listen to Steve explain stuff? Thanks Joe Rogan Podcast.
"Eat me and you will pay the price!" I love it!
You won't have the last laugh if they cook you well done. Can't believe two grown men with all your experience missed cooking the bear well done. But you have much respect coming out with your mistake.
Edit: Three years later and I can’t believe I forgot to mention this. Notwithstanding trichinosis I still would avoid eating people in a doomsday scenario. Nobody was around for the mad cow scare in the 90s? Prions, look it up. Am I the only one to have seen _The Book of Eli?_
Steve eating the slightly singed raw bear meat made me groan lmao
There was a wild game processor in SC died of organisms from cleaning and butchering for folks, they think he had a cut and was not wearing any gloves, it was from pig, they did not figure it out until the autopsy. I never handed in the United States and I cannot believe you made a mistake of eating raw bear meat. And is pretty cool the fact that you have knowledge you make the mistake. And is insanely funny what do you say at the ending of the video. You're awesome Steve

Damn Steve ur crew trusted you and u ended up giving them lifelong parasites
Maybe this is common knowledge where I live, but I was raised to NEVER undercook bear meat for this exact reason.
His best video ever
Oh my God! That last bit made me laugh so hard! Hahaha
Yes, I'll have a fillet of Rinella... medium rare please.
Tainted meet! lol
Nah, just gotta cook it better. You can only contract it from undercooked meat, if he cooked it good then he would have never got it. This worm works the same way as a pork tapeworm and that's why they always say to cook pork good. Everyone has eaten tapeworm cysts in their lifetime if they eat pork so it's the same concept with people that eat bear meat, just remember to cook that meat good and you'll be fine.
+Demon50 I meant it as a quote from The Walking Dead show and comic. That's good to know that all that's necessary is for it to be well done though.
I knew what you were talking about lol fucking Bob hahaha
George Carrillo thank you, somebody gets me lol

Thanks for the heads up. I’ll cross you off the menu.
As soon as I saw this title I knew it had to be bear based off of what I heard Glen Villanueva talk about.
You're a fool, Steve! Now they will see this video and be sure to fully cook you in order to avoid trichinosis.
So all in all hes pretty happy he got trichinosis lol :)

No medical student who watches this video could ever forget Trichinella. Thanks for sharing your story!
- future doc
Do you really have it the rest of your life?
Yes, you do. Once the larva spread new (baby) larva are born in your muscle, and other tissues, in their calcified capsules. Like Rinella said, the only way these capsules can be destroyed is with stomach acid. This means Rinella is walking around with living Trichinosis larva in his body, it's simply not active until their capsules are dissolved... ie Rinella becomes some poor bastards brunch. ;)
idk about that. some cysts dissolved after sometime and nobody have the explanation why. so maybe some individuals have a response to the larva too
No, calcium breaks down in the body and dissolves. And like he said....you can worm yourself.
IDdoc3 so did you ever become a doctor?
That was the funniest ending I have ever seen.
His last sentence 🤣🤣😂😂
Note to self: make sure to thoroughly cook Steven Rinella before consuming.
It loks like the BEAR had the last laugh
Steve I’ll make sure you are well done buddy!
LOL at what he said at the end
Thank you for this video. I have hunted for 30years mostly deer, Turkey, small game , waterfowl , and upland game.
I got sick after a dove hunt. I think it must have been a mild case of salmonella or similar. The dog had the birds in their mouths, I handled the birds with bare hands. But I did not consume these birds I gave my limit to another hunter.
Symptoms; for about 3-4 days I defecated white stools that had the consistency of a white mucous. No stomach pain or intestinal pains, it cleared up so I didn’t go the Dr. I guess it could have been worse.
Also one time I was field dressing a deer and I could see a worm in its guts. I field dressed it and moved on, I assumed it was not in the muscle tissue, I took it to the meat processing plant - which turned it into salami , deer stix and hamburger which I assume killed anything bad as mostly hamburger was cooked well and mixed with beef meat and beef fat. No reported ill affects.
Be careful out there people cook wild game well. I am not an expert but I know you can get sick and badly.
I just found Steve through JRE, first thing I hear is how he got rushed by a bear because they decided to sit in eat sandwiches under a tree with a hanging carcass, now I see this video him explaining they got a virus from eating undercooked meat.
You'd be fucked if you caught me trusting this guy.
A part of me wonders how much the larvae affects the taste considering there’s so much of it
Those were all the symptoms I had when I got Covid lol.
No lie. I don't know if Im catching covid or got this disease
Just watched JRE, the guy from living below zero. Even he says Bears are filthy animals full of parasites and it’s Not from just the meat! It’s their fur as well which has has worn eggs that can survive most conditions and easily get ingested thru your nose and mouth to hatch and burrow into your brain and/ or eyes. He only ate Bears out of pure necessity but he did enjoy the Fat; I do remember that.
now i'm rethinking hunting for black bear.
David Sunderland nothing wrong, just make sure you cook it properly. It's the same reason you cook pork to a higher tenperature
Just make a stew man or cook the steak to welll-done. That will kill the parasites.
When are you going to put some more on netflix
Steve you funny as hell
So does that mean you now have those worms forever?
yup.
