  • Violence against the transgender community in the United States has passed a tragic milestone. At least 28 trans people have been murdered or died under suspicious circumstances so far this year as compared to 26 last year. Twenty-three of the victims were transgender women, according to data collected by the National Center for Transgender Equality.
International Pronouns Day, held annually on October 21, seeks to make respecting, sharing and educating about personal pronouns commonplace. Being referred to by the wrong pronouns particularly affects transgender people. What follows are the stories of two women who are advocating for the widespread availability of FFS as a means of allowing trans people to lead their authentic lives.
Rubi, 25, said she knew at the age of 14 that she wanted to undergo the transition. The Suffolk County resident, employed as a make-up artist, began her trans journey at the age of 18 with body-enhancing surgery. On June 30th of this year, Rubi underwent FFS. Her reason for speaking out on International Pronouns Day is to encourage her trans brothers and sisters to do whatever they can to achieve confidence and a feeling of normalization.
Demi, 28, began her transition several years ago with hormones and breast-enhancement surgery. The NYC resident, who works in the cosmetic industry, is an outspoken advocate for trans rights. She believes that FFS provides greater safety to members of the trans community who are often physically attacked because of their appearance.
With Rubi, 25, of Suffolk County, underwent FFS on June 30. Demi, 28, of Brooklyn, underwent FFS on March 6 and James Bradley, MD, vice chair, department of surgery, Long Island Jewish Medical Center, Rubi and Demi’s plastic surgeon.
