    Thank you very much for this lesson, especially regarding the use of the verb recommend! I was familiar with the structure "recommend + gerund", but... WOW! Your explanation on the other structures, especially the negative, really made me study this grammar point very seriously. Keep up the good work. You and Liza rock!

    I'm confused. There's this movie "Hell or high water" 2016. In this movie at 18:12 the elder brother asks the younger one: You want a little advice?
    So my question is How come? Is this just a Texan thing (the movie is about bank robbers in Texas) or what?

    I want to say that the advice was good. It was a good advice. - is this correct? Thanks

    Would you please comment on using ‘advice’ as a noun on its own, without ‘some’ before it; is it acceptable?

    In your example you used adjective before noun, then father give him a good advice is also correct.

    • @B_Ruphe
      @B_Ruphe 2 місяці тому +3

      No. With uncountable nouns, you can never use the indefinite article (a/an). It makes no difference whether there is an adjective before the noun or not.
      Thus, these are all CORRECT: _His father gave him advice._ _His father gave him good advice._ _His father gave him some advice._ _His father gave him some good advice._
      These are INCORRECT: _His father gave him an advice._ _His father gave him a good advice._

    Hi! Thank you for the explanation. I have a question :
    Is it wrong to say " this is my advice for you " ?
    Is this the only correct version : "this is my piece of advice for you " ?

    • @B_Ruphe
      @B_Ruphe 2 місяці тому +1

      Your first sentence is perfectly correct. You can always use uncountable nouns without any determiner (like some, any, no, a bit of, a piece of, a cup of, etc.). Thus, _Advice_ is welcome, they like _milk,_ she spreads _happiness_ wherever she goes, etc.

    I think we can also say:
    A PIECE of advice
    Two pieces of advice.
    Etc...
    If we wanna pluralize.
    So, we can say:
    - let me give you SOME advice.
    Or.
    - let me give you A PIECE of advice.
    Is that right Kevin ?.

    • @B_Ruphe
      @B_Ruphe 2 місяці тому

      Yes, instead of quantifiers like _some, much, any, no,_ an alternative way of expressing uncountable nouns is with the phrase ...a ____ of ____.
      So, you are correct: _Let me give you some advice, a piece of advice, a word of advice_ etc. _May I have some milk, a glass of milk, a sip of milk_ etc.
      _It is time to spread some joy, a bit of joy, much joy_ etc.
