Alex Smith could be his own video, 1st overall pick, 7 miserable years in San Fran, turns it around with Andy Reid, the tragedy at Washington, nearly dying, and coming back for one last hurrah in the weird 2020 season to flop into the playoffs and win Comeback Player of the Year

I kind of wish the Chiefs could have brought him back as a backup for a year (& a SB ring)
The guy was (from what I've read/heard) a great teammate. As well as helping number 15 a lot from what he himself has said. Number 15 that is.

Alex Smith was a victim of the times and his own success in college. He wound up on a then-poorly-run organization, hurt his shoulder, was misdiagnosed and the wrong therapy was given. Just one thing after another.
But Alex always got paid. I think he might've made more headway in KC if he didn't just keep taking more money, instead of taking a pay cut to help rebuild the roster. But nobody does that.
I don't think Alex's arm was ever the same after the botched surgery and then making him play with it all messed up didn't help. He was damaged goods before he came to KC, even though he was damn near a QB genius, who could've had some rings, except for his price tag.
That was back in the days when top draft picks in the NFL were making more money than proven veterans.

No, suffering through the ‘70s and ‘80s was painful…Super Bowl Champs to 18 years of loosing records and two postseasons going one and done.
The ‘90s-2010s we had some great years and even a few we were #1 seeds but then always fell flat in the postseason.
The 90s Schottenheimer years were exciting but then always ended in Martyball frustration…’93 Montana loss to Kelly in the AFCCG was tough, but the ‘97 loss to Elway ripped my heart out… started Grbac over Gannon to ensure our loss.
Loved Trent Green, but as the video showed Manning and the Colts always had our number and showed us the postseason door in our first game.
2015, I was happy, we had a good year went 1-1 in playoffs with a not terrible loss to Brady… not a SB but a damn good year, 2016 & 2017 again ended in disbelief, the Marietta pass to himself for a comeback win, and the 18-15 loss to Roethesberger when our defense gave up 0 TDs…
A lot of frustration over the years, I’m loving this Mahomes and Reid era and hope that it can continue many more years! Thank you Patrick Mahomes, never have seen a QB like him, time and time again despite the odds put the team on his shoulders and just will the team to victory. He makes all the guys around him believe… never quit, just win baby!

Its good we're finally acknowledging the Chiefs before Mahomes, a very different (and dark) Chiefs team, franchise, and fanbase. From going to barely thinking about the playoffs (and knowing youre getting bounced if you make it) to being a legitimate contender year in and year out in such a small span of time has been amazing. I moved to KCMO from Arkansas in 1999 and this just about tells my life as a Chiefs fan. I wasn’t a Chiefs fan before moving to KC, but I was a Coach Vermeil fan. My first game at Arrowhead I was sold and have been a fan ever since. I thought this was one of the most complete explanations of how the organization had built itself up to where it is now. The only thing I wish you would’ve added was Herm Edwards first press conference where he stated the Chiefs biggest issue was the offense was scoring too fast. So he planned to slow the offense down rather than fixing that horrible defense. That press conference lives in infamy and rent free in my head to this day!

As a long time Chiefs fan (since SB 4) you did a great job summing up my pain over the years (including that 28-3 failed win that has led me to not be able to watch the games live anymore due to anxiety issues). I recently went through all the games after SB 4 during the Stram era just to understand why they never got back to the SB with that hall of fame team and it came down to Dawson's injuries and a not so good backup. thanks for a thorough job on the video.

Yeah, I can’t watch the games anymore either. I just don’t find it enjoyable. It makes me way too anxious. I remember the Marty Shottenheimer era. Having a 13-3 season and loosing to the Donkeys at home after a first round bye. The getting to the playoffs just to loose was a Chiefs tradition. I have sympathy for the fans of Buffalo for all their heartache because I had felt it most of my life as a Chiefs fan. Now that we are being talked about as a dynasty is completely elating. Losing to the Lions was rough but still the hope of running it back is strong. Our young receivers are going to learn and grow this season, with Mahomes tossing them balls that hit them in the hands be assured the drops will not continue like the first game.

Great job on Chiefs history! Gosh I remember those "fire pioli" flyovers. I also remember those years when we'd make the playoffs only to have our spirits crushed in first one or two playoff games. Enjoyed this!

This was an excellent piece of work. I followed the Chiefs for over 25 years (since Montana) and your piece is dead on. You captured just enough of the frustration that the fans felt over the years to bring us to the Nirvana of Chiefs Kingdom. Go Chiefs! BTW, why do you have that poster of Tom Brady?

14:30 Nice job mentioning the 2012 Chiefs blackout game! That's kind of a forgotten piece in Chiefs lore that's not known by outside fans.
32:22 That ended up also being Andrew Luck's final game in the NFL
Anyways, great video TubFrog! It hadn't always been sunshine and championships in Kansas City, especially considering the fact that from 1994 to 2012 we had to watch a baseball team that had already been in a 20+ year long playoff drought and a football team that could not get past the divisional round of the playoffs. Since 2013, Kansas City has stacked up an MLS Cup, a World Series, 2 Super Bowls, and a college basketball national championship (that is technically 45 minutes west of KC) and is having arguably one of the most successful runs in a small media market in the last 10 years.

    You did it.
I don’t know how you did it, but you nailed my entire lifetime worth of chiefs fandom.
Football is a community thing in KC and the you nailed the heartache and depression from 06-12 (my entire elementary school life: it was really traumatic). But you also nailed the mediocrity of the 12-17 seasons. The mediocrity was incredible in comparison to historically bad teams.
Then BOOM: the kickoff return against the Texans (I was at Talk of the Town in Leawood with my dad [rest in peace] and said “this would be a great time for a kickoff return td”). That’s when things changed in KC.

I've been a Chiefs fan since 1966. Watching all of this brings back some memories of decades of heart-breaking and baffling losses. I think that loss to Brady in the AFCTG didn't hit us as hard as you'd think because by then, we had grown accustomed to losing. Winning the SB the next year was a exhale we needed for many years.

I remember the bullshit calls that sparked some of these excruciating losses. Took away 3 points in the loss to the Titans right before half, I think it was a BS holding on Eric Fisher on our 2 point conversion in the Steelers loss. Offsides on Dee Ford. In 2014 the bullshit call that cost us the Raiders away game which ultimately made us miss the playoffs. Don't even get me started on the 45-44 loss, which so far for me has been the most difficult to experience, Lin Elliot game notwithstanding.

I completely understand why people outside of Kansas City don't see our team as a dynasty, but it's different for those of us who follows the team. We've averaged 12 regular season wins for a decade now. Our recent success includes a couple good years from Alex Smith as well. And although we didn't win Super Bowls at the time we were most certainly a dominant team unlike any that we've had before. And we were consistently building to be the team we are now. Which is the same reason I don't see a fall off happening any time soon. We were never a one hit wonder, it took time to build a winning culture and that won't change overnight

I didn’t know anything about him when KC selected Mahomes in the draft, but it only took about 2 minutes of video research to see that this kid was going to be special. Once I saw him in a couple preseason games, I was convinced he was gonna take us to a Super Bowl (though I still couldn’t believe it when he actually did, lol).
