I always thought the reflections with take the previous games into account. They have to a degree but where they ended up completely blown that theory out of the water. For example, the Thirteenth/Void takes references to Final Fantasy IV, while the First takes some references from the original Final Fantasy. It would have been so cool if they all matched up. I think that was a wasted opportunity.
