  • In this video we show you how to make whiskey with a bit of help from our friend, and master distiller, Jesse Wilson at @StillIt. Of course, it's illegal to distill whiskey at home in the United States and we don't have an actual commercial distillery. To solve this problem, Jesse came all the way to the United States, made a whiskey mash with us, then traveled back to New Zealand (where he lives) to recreate the mash and distill it.
    Specifically we made Tennessee style whiskey, which is charcoal filtered using the Lincoln County process.
    You'll need to watch part two for distillation, filtering, aging, and bottling: • Distilling Tennessee S...

    The hecto prefix denotes a factor of one hundred (i.e. Hectolitre = 100 Litre). Kilo denotes a factor of one thousand (e.g. Kilolitre = 1000 litre).

    It’s not illegal you just need a permit from atf and have property large enough to place still 500 ft from any other major buildings. I’m sure there are a half dozen other rules.

  • @340wbymag

    We are allowed to make our own wine in America. We can brew our own beer. Hell, we can even grow our own weed in many states, but distilling a drop of spirits remains a felony unless you have a butt-load of expensive permits and licenses from the state and federal government. It is just plain STUPID.

    • @heftylad
      @heftylad 29 днів тому +2

      Other than weed, the same is true in the UK, but as a chemist, I get it. Distilling requires heating ethanol to boiling. You're literally making ethanol gas. That stuff isn't exactly the best to breathe, and worse, it's very flammable, and again, you're doing the whole process around heat. If it's any kind of somewhat large scale, that ethanol escaping and igniting could at best cause a small fire, at worst cause an explosion that injures somebody, perhaps even your neighbours. The government just wants to send out experts to make sure your setup isn't putting anyone in danger.

    There’s about 8 -9 great states in America where you can make moonshine, Whiskey for personal use. It’s still illegal on federal level, like marijuana. On the list wasn’t Kentucky & Tennessee.

    Haven't finished watching yet but I'm assuming they are using Amylase according to the initial ingredient list.. I'm not sure how they are converting 16 pounds flaked corn with a few pounds of malt

    • @tjsotos2885
      @tjsotos2885 Рік тому

      If we assume the two row has 140L and rye malt has 110L than it gives them an overall of 25.6L. In general, the minimum amount needed to convert all starches would be 30L so the recipe is lacking diastatic power for sure but not as much as it may seem.

    Tennessee should become the first state to fully legalize home distilling...even for sale. However, for health and safety reasons such products should be required to be marked and labeled with "May Contain Impurities" and so on.
