    Nice work! I've had some scores, but normally when I buy a non running mower that needs a "carb cleaning" I find a connecting rod in the sump!

    To the best of my memory I had a cc1045 but it had a kaw engine. Years later i sold it for $200 and told the buyer he was buying a $199 engine surrounded by $1 of tractor. I regret saying that because it was easy to work on and parts were cheap and easy to get. It was also used for years mowing very heavy grass on a farm in central PA and often abused.

    Oh Hell Yea!! Good Job Man, These Courage engines are really problematic from beginning to end. I have had Many customers bring tractors with these Engines in them, and the Exhaust valve is prone with several issues, Also the sump cover being on top has its own plethora of issues, mainly the bolts are not torqued very tight from the factory, the vibrations of the engine loosens them and the next thing to fail is the very very thin walled block will crack because the sump cover is loose. My fix for this has been to JB Weld the block to seal the crack, re-assemble the sump cover with Red Lock-tight, and proper factory torque specs. BTW intake valve lash is correct at .003, but I have been setting the exhaust to .004 just because that side of the head does get so Hot, I also peen the exhaust valve guide to keep it in place.

    Lots of engines are assembled brand new with oversized cylinders; usually to correct defects in brand new cylinder bores. It's not really uncommon.

    I have this same exact mower from 2006 with 450 hours. it will run for sometimes for 5 minutes or sometimes for one hour and then it will spit sputter and choke itself out. Goes from High RPms to low rpms before it dies out and sometimes back fires.I have takin it from the dealer I bought it from over 20 times and they cannot get it dialed in. I have so many new parts in it I refuse to give up on it. They keep trying to get me to buy a new used one.I keep saying common and fix this thing they way it should be fixed! Im not to good mechanic wise. But Im hoping I can show a different shop this video to get it back to par.

    Hey thanks! Yeah nylon or plastic gears to me do not belong in any engine, Working on it yourself is usually best, it goes to show you a shop will not waste time working on it but rather just replace the engine, when it needs about $60 maybe in parts, Thanks for taking the time and stopping in to watch,

    That is unbelievable. $40! I had a 1525, with a Kohler CV15. Only 50 hours and it needed a new short block. Bet the PO had his share of problems and had the engine rebuilt. You've got yourself a new lawn tractor, good stuff.

    What a great catch. It looks like it will buff up nicely too once it's sorted. 46" deck is a plus too as most small tractors are 42" or less.

      @@Wallabydam I bought one last winter that's 9 years old and neglected. It ran fine,but pto wasn't engaging. New belts,pto handle,and alot of lubricating got it going. I'm not super satisfied with the deck. I'm thinking they may of hit something and bent a hanger because I cant get it level front to back. The fronts supposed to be a little lower than the back,but this ones 1/2" lower and that's as close as I can get it.

      The Courage engine was not the greatest design, Kohler built it for lower price and still make money on it, but it was a bad design, they had a recall on all those engines for a short time for anyone having one on a rider mower IF it was not the V twin design, after i fixed mine i reduced the full throttle speed a few hundred and its been great since,

      Wallabydam i can understand that, before i had this current mower i had a 16HP 42" Scott's by john deere from the mid/late 90's and it had a kholer in it and it did wondeful till i got my new mower and the carb gunked up and we sold it which was a huge mistake.. and we had had it since new to. i guess I'll always be loyal to kholer for the 15+ years of great service i've got from them

      @Wallabydam  10 років тому

      Im a Loyal Kohler engine guy, but I have seen the Briggs V twins run pretty good without problems, to me a Kohler Command or MAGNUM series engines are excellent, I have a strong dislike for the courage single cylinder engines, that had a Huge amount of problems with cracked blocks, crank balancers failing as well, it really is cheaply made if you ever looks at them apart, They have Self Tapping Screw type bolts holding the Cam Followers in them, at least that's what was in mine when I took it apart, But Kohler Engines in general are a Nice solid engine hands down,

  • @williamwhite9767
    @williamwhite9767 6 років тому

    Lots of car engines used nylon toothed timing gears for decades. I know my 65 327 cu in Chevelle engine had a plastic tooth cam gear and I bought a used 73 Mercury Cougar with a 351 Cleveland V8 that had a broken tooth timing gear in it when I bought it. There were plastic parts on the top of the oil filter and that alerted me to the fact. The engine was running but not the best. My 82 Pontiac TransAm had a plastic toothed cam gear. It had a chevy V8. They ran quiet. I replaced the plastic toothed cam gear in my TransAm with a metal gear and I could hear it whine.

    • @Wallabydam
      @Wallabydam  6 років тому

    Bagger are good to have, but they doont like wet or even damp grass,, it usually clogs up in the chute, you would have to change your blades for a bagger as well, that has more curve on the back of the blade, so it can push the grass out harder and farther up into the system, i know someone that bought a bagger system paid like 500 for it with blades and it would plug up, but he would mow too fast and or when it was damp, he used it one time, and then asked me to take it off, vacuums are best.

  • @Wallabydam
    @Wallabydam  11 років тому +1

    The gears just lift right up and out, you just line up the EX marking with the crank marking on the exhaust cam, and the INT marking on the crank mark with the Intake valve cam, crank should have two marks if i remember right for both to line up, you can look it up real easy online, free. Its been over a year now, I do not remember the kit number, but you can look it up possibly on partstree . com, get the parts number and do a search on the web for best price, too much oil, blows out seals,

    Whenever i buy anything anymore, i always go and read the reviews about it, I have a cub cadet 1641 with a briggs 16 HP V twinn, and its mowing with a 54inch deck that i put on it, and it works great, good power form that engine, Just have to make sure change the oil, and keep those finns clean, they hate heat, and makes the valves stick when overheated , I have two other mowers with briggs opposing cylinder twinn engines, those are bullit proof engines, last a lot of hours with those,

    I don't know what to think of these Courage engines. I got a 27 HP twin cylinder that I gotta take a look at. It is really hard to crank over also. I have nearly 870 hours on it and in ran fine up until that. It is anyone''s guess what the issue is. I took one of the cylinder heads off and took it to a local shop and they said I would need a new head. The valve guides are starting to come out. You can see them too if you can look in the intake and exhaust ports. This guy is honest enough that he won't try to sell you a part you don't need. Besides, I could walk there in a half hour on our back roads. I am thinking with all the hours that are on it, it has lasted long enough. I got an older John Deere to replace it. It has 1300 hours on it and still runs great. It has a single cylinder 17 HP Kawasaki engine and cuts nicer than the one I had really.
    The 27 HP engine I have is on a Cub Cadet GT1554 and everything else on the tractor works except the motor. It ran smoothly until this happened and it ran rough (seems very common on these things). There is minimal or no rust because it is garage kept and never left in the rain. I blow it off with a battery leaf blower when I am done with it. I grease the spindles and all of that other stuff including changing the hydrostatic fluid (on this one you take off the filter and it all drains out). I wonder what it would be worth to anyone who would be willing to attempt a repair. I don't know how much I should sell it for and I really would just not like to push it out to the woods on the back of my property to be forgotten. My mother does not think it would be a good idea to put any more money into it than already has been over the years maintaining it. Besides, it seems to me that I will just keep running into problems with this thing. It might finally blow up next time and put itself out of its misery once and for all if I do repair it. I know that MTD now owns the Cub Cadet brand and many people don't like MTD.

    this is what the guy told me when i bought it from him, it was not from oil or the guide it was from the unburned fuel is what i am thinking, being black smoke, he was running it full throttle mowing, when it shut down on him, the guide was normal, the valve slightly bent, timing gear had damage as you can see in the vid making the auto decompression kick the valve out slightly all the time during running, otherwise after the fix, it never smoked, runs great. thanks for stopping in.

    I think 3M makes those wheels too. It would not surprise me much if other abrasive manufacturers made them too but I know for a fact that 3M makes them. There are different colors for different grits too so if you are looking for a different finish, look at the different ones available. You could order them online if you can not find the grit you want at your local hardware store. You will more easily find them in places that sell auto body supplies, just be sure they don't want you to buy them by the box full. They last a fairly long time and unless you do a lot of auto body work a whole box would be a massive overkill. I would get 2 or three at the most because I won't need very many.

      somael my guess would be the shaft key is broken. Same symptom on my lawn mower after I hit a rear yard drain cover that stuck out 2" from the ground. What a dumb ass I was to leave that cover like it was for so many years. Ruined my lawnmower because of it. Now I would have fixed the problem. I canon believe the money I spent in my lifetime on mechanics ripping me off on simple repairs I could have done myself. Now that you tube is around I fix pretty much anything that breaks. With a little bit of seed money for basic tools I saved myself thousands of dollars instead of throwing out stuff and buying new again. The money I save I use a portion of to buy new tools. I would strongly suggest young guys to begin early in their life to teach themselves not to be scared and take thing apart and figure out how things work. We live in a throw things away economy. Nothing today is built to last. That is a manufacturing and marketing reality. Appliances now purposely don't last more than a few years so you can buy again and again. Don't know about you, but I work way to hard for my money to throw thins away because the little spring broke off as an example. Sorry I'm ranting at this point but I think you all understand my point. Cheers

      The shop's recommendation is understandable. They would be unable to give a reasonable repair estimate. They would have to charge for a diagnosis. They would have to give some sort of repair warranty. And, frankly, their techs may not have your analytical abilities. I just purchased a non-running LT1045 for $50. Yours has a better appearance.

    Would've liked to see more detail on how you swapped the gears around. I've got same mowr and now getting a leak in the front of mower. Wife over filled oil when it started leaking. I am thinking maybe just a gasket blew due to much oil pressure.... I hope. What was the rebuild kit part number u used?

    • @edge2sword186

      They say the bolts under the flywheel work loose and catch the flywheel cracking the case it's very common to leak oil after that .

    • @Wallabydam
      @Wallabydam  5 років тому

      To be honest if your getting 100 psi, that's a great number, from my past experiences 80 psi on a hot engine. And 100 psi cold. Your engine has sufficient compression, 80 and below I would consider possibly a problem or engine that is getting tired and possibly needs a rebuild or replacment.

      @@Wallabydam Thanks for your reply! I'm trying to find out why my 42" mower is leaving a 1" strip of uncut grass on every row I cut. I was told the engine could lack power ( RPM might be to low)

    • @jwjordan915
      @jwjordan915 5 років тому

      The Kohler manual states that compression should be 160 PSI

    • @jwjordan915
      @jwjordan915 5 років тому

      The motor seems to run great. Starts every time. Good speed, but fails to cut properly.

    • @Wallabydam
      @Wallabydam  5 років тому

      jwjordan915 several reasons can cause this. thick grass and too much ground speed. BLADES. blades new are squared at the ends,, and helps coverage on cutting overlap. with worn blades you can get a stripe of grass on some turns.
      Engine speed should be at 2800 to 3000 rpms for best results as well. also a dirty under deck. some homeowner brands decks clog and build up a lot of grass because it has not been cleaned and will not allow the correct effect of air movement inside which in some cases will in fact blow the grass down and away from the blades. disrupting proper air flow. check for bent mandrel or blades. this can effect cutting. that's all i can come up with off the top of my head...

      JPVegh no I didn't show it in the video but I did say and mentioned in the video that I bent the valve back and re-lap it in the seat. the bend was so slight but enough to cause a leak so I took a small flat blade screwdriver laid it between the seat and the valve and tapped it with a small hammer till I was happy with the result and re-lap the seat and valve..

      Well that engine was a earlier model. 2007 year. It's 2015 kohler after having to replace for free for a limited time to those customers a free replacement engine. That's came and gone. The newer courage engines I believe have had all problems worked out known in all previous engines. This problem existed in the single cylinder engines the V twin courage had no real problems that I am aware of. Out of the kohler I prefer the command model. Briggs sells a great engine as well both have strong points and lows. If you buy a new mower and it has a courage. More likely those problems are all taken care of with updated parts.

      Old Briggs are solid. the 10hp variant though have some issues that can be fixed easy (when old they like to dump all the gasoline into the crankhouse if you put into storage with full tank so best is to ether empty it or put a valve on the fuel hose)
      newer Briggs and a general problem with Briggs today is delivering of spare parts for warranty repair.
      this is a reason why Husqvarna have ditched Briggs for Kuhler on all models sold in Europe because most countries here have minimum warranty set by law and Briggs refuses to obey to it and trows the problem over on the manufacturer but Kuhler always gives longer.
      and good luck buying a new Briggs engine here... they are close to the price of an brand new lawn tractor (just a simple 13hp is 1300$ here)
