Alpine, Renault’s sporting sub-brand, has unveiled an all-new concept car that previews its first all-electric road car. The A290B is based on the Renault 5 Concept first seen in 2021, but adds a sporting twist and dramatic new look.
The first of the three models that will make up Alpine’s ‘Dream Garage’ of electric cars, the A290B has already been signed-off for production and is set to arrive by the end of 2024. The concept gives us the strongest hint yet as to how that car will look, albeit with some key elements still yet to be confirmed.
Like the 5 (and the next-generation Nissan Micra), the A290 will be built on Renault and Nissan’s new CMF-B EV platform. Alpine bosses suggest that ‘around 85%’ of the concept’s exterior design will be transferred to the production model, which will come as great news for drivers looking for a true electric hot hatch.

Alpine is a brand aside of Renault now, its follows its own path

If I was 17 again this would be a perfect 1st car. Brings me back to when my first love was my Pegeout 205 gti. Used to live rallying around with the close ratio gear shift. That baby used to love the corners at high speed.
thing is hot hatches arent cheap anymore. this thing will probably be 40k+
17? What's wrong with being 57 and driving this gorgeous thing? In all honesty this would be our "third" car but I am sure it will do the most driving of the trio! It's handy to park, it's plenty fast enough to be fun, it has 5 doors.... what's not to like?
Ahhh the 205gti....lovely. I'm the same age and now my pension pot has matured I might just go and get one for a last hurrah. We came from the hot hatch scene my friend. Just think the insurance will be cheap and either we will have a big grin on our face when we burn off the young boy racers or be in a ditch. But it'll be fun.
It will attract old timers nostalgic persons who drove an R5 Alpine in the 70s and 80s.
The centre cockpit seems like a prototype tease, but if this became mainstream (after all, most cars on the street have no passengers), then car-makers wouldn't have to make a left- and right-hand version.
The car is very cool as is, but in reality the production car will be a boring version with almost none of this cool stuff and that prevents my excitement for it

All French cars are silly. And that is what makes them so brilliant - I used to have a Venturi Atlantique - Frances fantastic attempt at a supercar - for the most it didn't work at all - but when it did which was as rare as the car itself it was sublime. And I mention this as it had the V6 3.0 as found in the Alpine A110

Just a few day's ago I was in a Taxi and I had to ask the Driver what Make the Car was.
I Loved the Original R5 back in the 1970/80's.
I went limp after she said FWD.

Think the Reno 5 looked better personally. Probably the colour that isn’t working for it…. It’s meant to be a hot hatch where is the hot colour. Think Alpine blue would make this look way better then this white colour

What a marketing show.
Yes, historically, the cars of the time were mostly front-wheel drive. But since in times of all-electric drives this is the worst concept for driveable cars: these front-scratchers will have to struggle to match even the blessed I3s in terms of driving dynamics. Renault seems to consist only of marketing professionals and not engineers. Too bad!
Anyone who has ever wanted to drive a BEV dynamically with >300Nm (from 0rpm) will understand. Sporty BEV and front wheel drive is error by design.
The driving dynamics regulations will neuter the fun- because the worst of all drive concepts requires it.

That will bring me 29 years back in the past. First car I drove and smash a door in a parking lot 24h after getting my driving license😂what a car it was, you could fix it on your own and drive and drive. So good memories.

it might have the looks but 215hp is not even hot hatch territory these days especially given the additional weight of an EV - my bet is they'll still be charging a high price whilst trying to convince people its 'sporty' .. much like the cupra born 'reskin' of the ID3.
The problem with most of these cars is they're developed on a shared platform for cost-savings and there is probably little/limited customisation available for derivatives. In the case of the cupra it mean its inherit the same shameful media system from the parent VW and in the alpine situation the lack of rear motor is probably due to the base car having a single motor configuration only - a shame because dual motor option would likely fix the limited performance and also improve handling.
Base Clio 4 RS is 1200kg 200hp and 260nm. This aim 1200kg too and will feature at least a 220hp and 300nm engine.... Not that bad I say. BUT I'm sure it will cost around 50k because of Alpine brand and the fact that basic megane EV60 already cost 44k... Which is twice the price of good old Clio RS.... So very poor price/perf ratio.

If Road going looks like.the concept Renault have got something right . Hopefully it's got a 5 somewhere in its name. Alpine at the moment are struggling so hopefully the Roadcar won't have Gasly on it or Ocon as that's a bit crap

215hp is not enough for an Alpine, my MG4 has 204. They need to put a motor in the back and get over 400hp. No one buying that car is bothered about boot space
Go back a few years and 200hp was a ludicrous amount of power for a hatchback. If they can reduce weight and give it a sporty setup, it could be great fun
@@monty6491 it’ll be fun, but if it is meant to be a hot hatch, why not give it proper welly? The MG4 is getting a 4WD 400hp version, I just think that is a no brainer for Alpine as it is meant to be a performance brand
Considering how quick the a Zoe goes from 0-60 on 134bhp and it's one of the slowest EV's in its class, then 204 should be more than enough for a little car like this.

@Billy Heywood I think woth EV's horsepower doesn't always reflect the performance of the car as much as in petrol/diesel. They have so much torque that 204bhp on a loght enough car will feel insanely fast. If it does 0-60 in like 5 seconds, it's going to feel very fast.

We don't get cool cars like this in America. All the average customer here wants is a big truck or SUV with an automatic transmission, because, apparently, size equals value.

Amazing design inside and out. The BHP quoted is good on paper but wondering about the weight. Power to weight ratios are everything.
200+ hp on what I estimate to be a 1300kg car isn't bad, especially considering the immediate, massive torque of an electric motor. Probably looking between Clio and Megane RS Cup numbers.

As much as I love the look of it, 215bhp and front wheel drive?! All that electric torque going through the front wheels? Also, the cost of it. Anyone thinking it'll be affordable only has to look at what Fiat are charging for the electric 500 Abarth.

It's a track car that'll have a absolutely nothing in common with the street version! By the time Apine get their act together, the Chinese will likely put them out of business with vehicles that are already in full production.

I dont think the square rims can make production because the alignment always goes off with wheel spin, so the boxes will all be out of alignment and not look as well.
I prefer the look of the Renault 5 show car.
Too bad will not look like this in production. About the only retro future styling on the market is the Ioniq5. Probably what I will be getting shortly. In europe though, you guys get much more daring styling options.
It looks great, and will have the Cupra Urban Rebel as a rival, which might help keep the price down.

Looks like the old Mini Metro MG Turbo, just a little mor modern.
Just give us that Retro Renault five as close to the one shown and it will sell like hot cakes. This just needs to have a decent range. What a miss if they only do only one motor and not front and rear all wheel drive. Granted the interior is stupid a clock but it’s a rally concept.
So frustrating that...yet another beautiful subcompact EV not even remotely being considered to make it to Canada.

Lovely! They should do it like Mercedes does it sometimes with the amg line (style). Would love to have an electric R5, but in Alpine line... Simpler and more racing cockpit, because I don't care about all these new conveniences in cars like the crappy facebook screens and so on. When I drive, I drive, shit doesn't interest me. Vitals do, like pressures and temps and so on.
I do wish Alpine keeps a line of soulful ICE powered manual shift sports cars, even if it were just making a long tail A110 and putting the RZ34 engine and a CD009 in the middle.

Have you tried a Mini electric (with 184 hp), which is close to this Alpine in concept? Like you, I was skeptical since I am used to RWD but it took 100 meters in a testdrive to convince me it was golden! It's plenty fast+fun as a daily with 218 hp IMO. My other car has 420 hp FYI.
215 is nothing, gonna have a slower 0-100 than a old renault scenic.
