- When I went to Bo's memorial service in 2006, Bo's good friend George Perles (MSU head coach from 1983-1994) spoke and mentioned this game. It was Perles' first UM/MSU game and when the coaches met at mid-field before the game, George said, "I have to tell you, Bo. I'm really, really nervous." Bo just smiled and said, "You should be."
Game played on October 8, 1983 in East Lansing.

Steve Smith never got the kudos that I believe he deserved.
Had his share of dud games. 1-2 in Bowl Games as a starter.1-2 against Ohio State.Never forget Ohio State with 2nd worst pass defense in country keeping Michigan out of Endzone in 14-9 victory in 81 at Ann Arbor.
I think that Harbaugh kid might have a future...

Ray Lane was such an MSU slappy.
These games were shown on WXYZ channel 7 in Detroit. They came on about 11:30 or 12 midnight, and I stayed up as long as could as a kid. They even had the Ohio State game on that year, because ABC, did not cover a lot of Michigan games that year. I think they had the 3 or 4 game rule going back then. And for me, this was about 2 years before I got a VCR. Haven't missed one since 1985! GO BLUE!
40+ years later some things haven't changed. Michigan by 40+ points.

That rule about not advancing a fumble was one of the worst ever IMO, when did they finally change that? About the only one worse would be the rule about taking back a touchdown cause of excessive celebrating now.
By the way, were they still doing some games on tape delay at this point or was this shown live?
@ajk Not until the early to mid-90's could you advance a fumble but I'm not sure of the exact year.
I was 3 when this game was played but I'm almost positive this was shown live. Tape delay games were shown in 1980. Lane and Brandstatter did all non-ABC games in 1982 and 83. They were a part of some local network that only broadcast to southeast Michigan, I believe. Someone who is older and can remember will have to correct me if I'm wrong.
