What a scene when he broke Gordies record. To do it in Edmonton where it all began and to have the fans erupt like that when the opposing team ties the game, Wayne truly was bigger than hockey itself. I truly believe we'll never see a player like him again. Thank you for everything Wayne.
As someone who lives 20 min north of Brantford, we don’t live in “NORTH WEST CANADA”… lol. We live in south western Ontario ..must be an American narrator. Anyways, we love Wayne and will always be so proud of him… he will always be our love , even more than maple syrup. 🇨🇦 🍁 🏒 🥅
I showed this to my Dad, who never really supported me as I played sports. He was mesmerized by this video, and I think he realized from that point on the importance of supporting your sons in sports.
My Dad also didn't really support me in sports as well. He came to one of my HS football games, and one of my HS wrestling matches(I got pinned!) Never saw me play hockey, and hated that I raced BMX, he thought it was juvenile. When I was 22 years old, I visited him and put in this video tape (1990!), and he and I sat there together in the living room and watched the whole thing. He was captivated by it, he was excited and smiling, and glued to the TV. That was a great moment in time that we shared together. I think he realized the passion, and importance of sports in your kid's life. I was the oldest and first born, and there are NO instructions on raising a child! I found that out myself as a father of three! I absolutely don't have any blame for my father. He is gone now, but he NEVER MISSED A GAME OR COMPETITION of my two younger brothers. I attribute that to one of my two heroes in life, Wayne Gretzky.
What’s fascinating is he had exactly the same hunched over skating style and the same playing style when he was a young kid in peewee (weaving in and out in circles and finding the seams and holes)…all the while with his head up. Nothing changed. No wonder he scored almost 400 goals in one season at age 10 playing against 14 year olds.
i miss those old titan hockey sticks. they had that thick fiberglass on the bottom of blade, taped length-wise, we could play street hockey with them without ruining the stick on the pavement
Thing with Gretz, the guy could pivot hard against a defenseman in close which gave him time to setup. Only other guy I saw that move with was Denis Savard.
That is 100% true. My brother played against him in Junior A and 11 years in the NHL as a defenseman. He said that Gretzky was the only guy he played against, that could go from one end to the other without looking down at the puck once! Nobody..not Messier..or even Lemieux could do that. And the other thing was being able to be in full flight and suddenly stop on a dime….as the defenseman suddenly just gave up an extra 10-15 feet sometimes….
To think they wasted his career in Edmonton and now the same with macDavid.MacDavid should be playing for the New York Rangers? Flyers Islanders Boston Montreal ,N.J, somewhere on the east coast
I must have watched this 100 times on VHS as a kid.
What’s vhs?
I watched it 99 times
So did Patrick Kane, apparently! 😂

I think we're seeing reminders of him with McDavid and Mario with Matthew's, and even Bobby with Cale Makar. But there will never EVER be another #99
One of my heroes, Gretzky is the greatest hockey player ever, hands down.
They don’t make commercials like they used to eh. Love this doc

I owned this on VHS and watched it a bazillion times.
Man, when you go back and watch those highlights. Come on! I’ve never seen anyone play hockey better than him. Especially with Kurri.
They were a dynamic duo indeed. They had a shared brain on the ice.
My go to video tape from its release. He is the best!

You mean sport intelligence? Gretzky, Cruyff, Brady, Woods, Bryant.
I started hating Gretzky when he became a King. But he never really accomplished anything Stanley Cup wise as a King. That made me happy.
Didn’t accomplish anything other than winning 5 scoring titles (3 regular season, 1 playoff, 1 Canada Cup), and 2 MVPs (Hart Trophy and Canada Cup MVP).
