This video does a great job of addressing the barriers that make people new to art (and often, mid-career artists as well) feel like they can't get started. Being too focused on making an art object, feeling like every work of art needs to succeed, and worrying about other people's opinions can interfere with feeling free to explore and experiment in a sketchbook. Especially if you're concerned about producing finished art, it's important to carve out time and materials for freeform experiments and closed rehearsals. That's how you'll replenish the well of ideas!

So true. And even more accomplished artists go through these phases - it's part of being an artist. Which ironically gives you even more confirmation that you ARE an artist.

I’m really loving your book. Can’t really commit to studio work at the moment, so I’m hoping that a sketchbook can lead me out of this dark place I’m in. Even a short time with pen on paper is gonna help.

It really will help. Be gentle with yourself.

Thanks for your encouragement and the other thing that helped me a lot, someone said "You don't want to create like a copy of a photo. You want to put your personal style in it."

Perfect timing! I’ve been in such a drawing funk. Looking forward to drawing with you later this week.

Thank you! Always love your ideas and your gentle approach to "art". I'm currently reading "The Artists Way" by Julia Cameron and going through a lot of the exercises she has in there for unblocking yourself. This weekend I found myself shifting gears, instead of drawing, I made a coptic stitch sketchbook. And now I'm a little addicted to the meditative feeling of sewing signatures together so I've got two more sketchbooks ready to go in the works to bind. And later when I'm finally feeling more up to drawing again, I'll now have three more sketchbooks to play in. Sometimes it's about doing something other than your norm, like you suggested! Thanks and have a wonderful day!

You've touched on some really interesting points here! I recently bought 'the artists way' and am working my way through there, the morning pages seem really helpful 😊

If I may suggest something still better for these kind of videos, that will be: include drawings! Yours or from others, all kinds of images would fit and complement your always inspiring image...

Great video as always❤ sometimes I do feel guilty when I'm not in the situation to draw, like when my full time corporate job demands my attention. And that guilt takes so much of energy too. I could relate to so many points you've mentioned. probably one day at a time. One drawing at a time😇

hi Koosje... I'm a big fan from Brazil. I've already bought and loved your book. Some of your tips have been very useful for improving my drawings. I watch all your videos and share them with other people who love to draw.

Wow! You have been reading my mind. I was at an art exhibit last weekend and didn't sell anything and I was feeling like WHAT'S THE USE! I was thinking that I guess I am not a real artist because nobody wants to buy my art. But I love to make art so you have just encouraged me to do it anyway and just have fun. Thank you.

Urgh art shows can really bring that insecurity which we do not need at all!

Been sketching for several days now. My daughter purchased a landscape drawing and painting class for me for my birthday. Mostly folks that paint with oils. I am the only student who uses watercolor. In fact, I think I am the only one who sketches with pen and ink. It is interesting and I am learning new things. By the time the class is over I may be sketched out for a few days. I guess that is the opposite of suffering from creative blocks.

I'm so glad you put the link in for the 'Art Therapy' you did years ago. I have your problem and Pascal's problem at the moment - I'm not drawing worth a monkeys and my mandolin playing is dull and lifeless. So that Part 1 was very helpful. Pass on my thanks to Pascal!
