Sir Roanoke, I found a guy with that specific brand/model of muscle car you like whose name escapes me right now and they're trying to put nissan parts in it because it'll be cheaper to restore. Permission to destroy?
the most horrifying implication in this whole video, is that since Gibbo was the first (I think) one to start losing himself to the entity. All of his cries for help are genuine, yet also seems to be conscious enough of the situation that he could tell others to stay away from him. Like the entity was slowly pulling his mind apart as it examined how his brain worked.
The thing is, I think that pretty much most of the people were sentient. The get away could also mean the monster, as he may be reliving his infection or it could be that he’s trying to stop people from getting near him, but I don’t think it’s the ladder because of what Muir is saying. Based on Muir’s dialogue, and how he prevents people from leaving it seems that they are not only sentient but don’t understand what exactly is going on physically, and by that I mean, I don’t think they even know what they look like or the monster they’ve become. It seems physiologically Muir still thinks he’s somewhat human, and him preventing anyone from leaving is more-so a plea for help, but also a feeling of betrayal from those who won’t help him. “Why won’t they help me” is a clear indication that he doesn’t know he’s a huge lobster monster fleshy thing, which means there’s also physiological infection, but the monster also takes control somewhat as he also says I can hear your heartbeat. Based on that it’s very possible Gibbo was simply reliving some trauma, as the infection plays with his head via hallucinations and visions. So while there’s physical deformities and bodily infection, it doesn’t seem the people being infected quite understand what they are, or what they’re becoming. The infection mostly takes place internally before it does externally, or at the very least it happens at the same time.
Just a heads up. There weren't 120 people on the rig, It's mentioned in the game that the majority of them went home to spend the holidays with their families. The only people there are a skeleton crew of about 20 people.
well lucky for them huh? honestly, if there’s anyone I’d want to stay on that rig the most while everyone else goes home, it’s Rennick let him drill into the ocean himself, I’m sure he’ll be able to figure out how to contain it
Gibbo wasn't just anybody, he was the first infected. If you talk to Roper at the start of the game, he and Gibbo are by the drill. Further, Gibbo calls Rennick when you're in the office with him and is the one saying there's something messing with the drill. About 15 seconds later, the rig shakes and rumbles as the entity is awoken
Pretty sure the dude inside the bathy was the first to get infected, since he was the closest to the epicenter when the drill cracked open the Entity's shell.
@@the_furry_inside_your_walls639 i think it was Gibbo, but I guess timewise it could have been the guy in the bathysphere. But Gibbo was already infected in some manner by the time you come across Finlay for the first time after drowning
I think it’s either Gibbo or Raff, the rookie who got stuck in the diving bell. However Gibbo was probably the first to start infecting others, as Raff is still stuck in the bell when you get into engineering and meet Finlay, who tells you Gibbo’s not right in the head right now.
I always thought the "entity" was this eldritch deep sea thing, since they don't know what exactly they hit, and at the end, you can hear a heart beat, it has a heart beat, when they drilled into it, it reacted negatively, it is also very fiberous in its base state, only becoming bloby and fleshy when it comes into contact with other living creatures where it seems to act like a cancer, with there being extra hands and heads on some blobs. And there seems to be some mimiking of deep sea creatures, with Muir having crab legs, Addiar having more of a jellyfish body. The hallucinations that you experience are most likely the enitity trying to get you to leave, it WANTS you to leave so it can also get off, as finley states, "WE can't leave, but IT can" meaning it's hallucinations are meant to get you to want return to your loved ones so it can spread
It also is unable to revive already dead corpses, it wants them alive, which means that they are alive and "conscious" inside those blobs Also it isn't an instant assimilation into the blobs, seeing how Caz does get grabbed by a tentacle at some point, I am assuming is that whatever they dug into was alive, and it proceeded to instinctively grabbed the drill and whatever it was attached to, since the "main mind" is able to make its fibrous tendrils at the bink of an eye. I say it either grew at rapid pace or basically began to attack the drill until it was broken, but I think it got bigger due to the amount of minds that were assimilated into the hive mind. And when it comes to the minds of the victims, it seems that they don't know or think that they are the monsters that they truly are, you see it really well with Rennik and Muir, Rennik is still angry that you are still on his rig, and Muir keeps wondering why no one will help him and why everyone is trying to get away from him
Really this is a great take on the “entity” in this game, also something I’ve figured is that the rennik(monster) represents a blobfish, which also lives deep in the sea , and trots could represent that of a mermaid/merpeople(because correct me if I’m wrong but in some EU cultures they do talk about mermaid’s right?)
@@dragothedragon7044 there's a fungus coined the "zombie fungus" that effects insects, snails and worms that act very similar to that creature and will actually cause each of these creatures to intentionally gather around their species to infect them even ripping out of them and having different body parts looking like the creatures in this There's also a worm that effects larger insects laying eggs in them and once exposed to water or extreme heat they'll come out of their stomachs or heads and still control the body
Commercial Diver here. Bends don’t necessarily hurt, thats the problem. From my experience its either growing numbness, or searing pain. Hes would also be freaking out because it can cause long term damage to pretty much everything if it isn’t treated very quickly by hyperbaric recompression.
Cool, are you a welder too? Ever work on Oil Rigs? My step grandpa used to tell me stories the divers told him in Australia about GW sharks! They were so bad ass they would just hit the sharks and they would go away as they were just interested in the welding.
The stories I’ve heard sound agonizing. I’ve heard of death happening in as little as 3 mins. I’ve always pictured someone’s brain exploding like a shaken up can of soda.
@@flare9757 Better put. A little off topic but are you familiar with Edd Sorenson? He is the G.O.A.T. Of cave rescue divers. He has some pretty harrowing stories about his dives if you are interested.
18:08 You forgot that if you talk to the other workers as you go to meet Rennick, they say the rigs running on a skeleton crew so probably half that or less.
@@pancake5830just look up “still wakes the deep characters”. There’s around 30 total that are named. Then you find like 10 dead bodies throughout the game so definitely around 40-50 people.
As soon as I saw what the game was about I knew you would cover it. This game has all elements of good bio-horror. Unrelated but my favorite character was Finlay. She was the true MVP. She knew the rig and it's systems from head to toe, she survived until the end on her own (which implies she endured parkouring and running her way around like Caz, despite being a 50-ish year old smoker) and she was the one with the brains and the balls to know they were doomed and needed to blow up the entire rig to protect people in the mainland. Ellen Ripley levels of badass.
I definitely think that Roanoke should cover SOMA. There is everything for him to love : CRISPR, unholy flesh blobs, feet, literally an anglerfish. It’s just missing rabies that’s all.
Saw an article talking about this and the studio said the monster physics is actually a bug they found in the engine that they managed to replicate and use for the game. It's not the reason why they made the game, no, but it does add a lot to the horror aspect of the game.
@@norasyikinali6283 oh that's awesome if that's the case. The best devs know when to roll with certain bugs and use them to their advantage to improve the game.
To correct something a 5:56 trots says "My head is splitting" which is also mentioned by Caz [the player] when he gets near the stuff it gives him massive migraines and splitting headaches. one of the more interesting things is when fixing the generator there is a key in the key box clearly with a giant tag on it different from the others labeled "Lab key".
@@AbysmalRapture Also, it's not uncommon to find dinosaur bones and artefacts buried in the ocean's floor among the debris. Some oil rigs employ paleontologists and archaeologists to catalogue items they find by accident.
@@AbysmalRaptureWhile this is something I pretty well understood, I really have to wonder why the Beira D has a research lab considering Rennick doesn't seem to be one to give two shits about reasearch, y'know? Despite Gibbo saying something was going wrong with the drill op, Rennick ordered them to continue, not to mention he clearly cheaped out on the Rig's construction in many places (such as the lifeboats, or when he informs Caz that some doors can easily be busted open if kicked in the bottom right.) It's pretty clear that Rennick cares more about profits than scientific reaserch, thus I am interested as to wether the lab on the Beira D played a much bigger role than implied.
@@clockwork3494 Nah, he'd probably want to know the oil is actually worth selling. Guy's a cheapskate, but he's still looking to increase his bottom line.
This game was a trip. It's like "imagine if Junji Ito and Jeff VanderMeer made _The Thing_ and set it on Titan from _Destiny 2_ except the whole cast is from that funny country up north where my granny's from" Also completely random fact: the actor who voiced Caz also voiced Adam Smasher 💀
What part about this gives junji ito? Like I'm genuinely curious, i can't think of any of his stories that share much of anything that goes on here. Like he has a couple with sea creature stories and transformative horror but not like this? 🤔
@@Chonk_enthusiestdoesn’t tomie become some kind of wonky amalgamation in one of the first chapters? i think she was in a basement and there was an old man that’s all i can remember
@@Chonk_enthusiestoh and i think maybe the chapter ‘the boy’ is the one where she develops from a little blob into her regular body. i can’t remember what this one is called but i remember there’s one where a dude goes under water and she’s like attached to a rock
I mean, I think the fact the entity is able to create a tornado around the main mass and turn the sky red whilst emotionally manipulating the surviving crew into not wanting to destroy it very clearly shows the entity itself is an eldritch being, and the infection is just its vector of power.
This is unironically one of the best horror games I've ever gotten to experience. Not only do the scares hit and the tension is through the roof, but the story is freaking phenomenal. Terribly depressing but with a bittersweet ending that still leaves room for people to pull straws and theorize about. Also, I'm glad you brought up the possibility that Rennick wasn't infected until after the heli crashed. So many people think that the heli crashing was referencing a similar scene in the Thing Prequel where one of the members on the heli turned out to be infected,. However, in the case of Still Wakes the Deep, I don't think anyone on the heli was infected. If anything, I think Archie, the pilot of the heli, saw Caz right as he was taking off, and when he was able to get the heli to turn around, he did just that. Rennick, in a fit of rage, tried to take control from Archie in an attempt to keep it from going back to the Rig. This would thus result in the heli obviously losing its balance in the air and crashing into the rig.
Personally I think Rennick was turning in the helicopter after Archie turned it around to go back for Caz. And I don't think Rennick was fighting Archie for the controls as a normal human, because Rennick doesn't have the knowledge on how to fly such a heavy helicopter in the middle of the ocean, he's an absolute bastard yes, but he's not suicidal enough to try and take over a helicopter mid-flight without even having the knowledge on how to fly it. He's the kind of guy that would've just sat his arse down yelling his ''authority'' the whole way to the rig, and then been pissy as heck the whole trip back to the mainland.
@@Mirvra but there would be no way he would be infected though, when the drill busted open and spread the stuff around it seems to dominate the legs, pontoons, lower deck and the main deck, but barely seen on the upper level, throughout the whole game, the only high structure affected is the rig's tower. helipad and rennick's office was practically untouched by the entity, so unless he went down to check (which would be before his evacuation announcement, since he isn't aware of it when he made the first one), that would take a decently long time. Judging from how fast it turns people, he would probably sound a little different or already turned by the time Caz reached the helipad, it's not wild to assume brodie pulled Caz out of the sea in around 5 minutes, not to mention the period where he's knocked out, in that time period dobbie completely turned and a good bit of the crew already turned to aquatic lasagna. So it's either him being an ass or the storm being rough+180° turn from Archie that crashed the heli.
That actually makes a lot more sense, especially given if Rennick was already turning, Archie probably would've tried to jump ship earlier, leading to the chopper crashing elsewhere on the rig. Rennick only turning once off the chopper makes more sense too given we don't see any large holes on the chopper's fuselage, however the side door is unlatched making it more likely Rennick got out before changing and not the other way around.
Muir is actually NOT several people, its just him, he actually goes out of his way to not absorb his victims, instead propping them up to sit, either dead or dying
He is also seen holding the body of his closest friend and mentor when he dies, having been crushed by debris. They did a great job making them monsters while keeping some parts of their humanity and personality.
Definitely mate im in the middle of it and it’s amazing. Good 9/10 so far for me great game. It’s really scary too the audio is incredible also. Definitely up there with one of the best horror games made 😃🔥👌.
The setting of a 1970s Scottish Oil Rig goes insanely hard for a John Carpenter style horror game It’s obviously heavily inspired by The Thing, the GOAT of horror films
Carpenter's version of The Thing was the first true on-screen cosmic body horror film. Glad it's still seen as a top horror film if not THE (it certainly is for me!).
This game made me tear up a little bit, the phone call with Brodie as well as when you meet with Roy at the end of the game. I didn't expect a walking sim horror game to be so gut wrenchingly sad.
It was pretty obvious to me by the end of the game that it was the Colour Out of Space. It had the same properties of mutation by touch, the ability to warp reality around it that you see with the final areas of the game, the amorphous mass spiralling upwards, the array of glowing colourful orbs all over its body and of course the deep Magenta coloured light it emits when it's in its "final form", so this thing can't be explained by our science, we can approximate it to real world cells and viruses but it's from another dimension that's laws of physics and nature could work very different to our own and as HP Lovecraft created it that way it is truly unknowable
Finally, another person that saw The Color Out of Space. The colors at the end, the hallucinations, the mutations. Everything. And I mean, it's not like this is an official adaptation, it's more like an inspiration. But still, it's THE COLOR OUT OF SPACE
I think that the idea of this being some ancient life form originating from the bottom of the sea rather than some kind of alien species is honestly so much more terrifying. Although I suspect the developers did intend it to be an alien creature, but who knows. Great video.
Idk man, as you can see whatever that thing is makes small debris float like some kind of cosmic entity and besides ancient stuff were theorized to have come from space
Honestly, with how little we know about the bottom of the ocean, it might as well be alien, it's a *completely* different world down there, even compared to the rest of the ocean!
@@kishi7479 Both are literally the extreme opposite of each other, I'm sure we'll eventually figure out how to deal with all that pressure properly too, though I doubt we'd find anything actually good down there
Idk tbh. Accidentally unleashing some ancient elderitch horror that's been hiding in the ocean or deep underground is always pretty terrifying. I think it's definitely supposed to be Lovecraftian in nature, it's checks all the boxes. People going mad and changing into nightmarish monsters.
The humans as batteries part is there because some jerk in the C-Suite thought "If I can't understand the science, then nobody can. And I'm a billionaire, so obviously I'm a super-genius. I'll lose money if I don't insist on this change right now."
This game had some of the best voice acting I've ever heard. At first I was confused why this game had subtitles, I could understand them perfectly fine, even with the accents.. that is until the characters got really mad and their speech devolved into an incoherent string of slang and curses. God bless them Scots.
It's just some ancient prehistoric organism/hibernated alien from other planet from our prehistoric times. Involving hell and demons here would be stupid af.
I saw a comment on one of your videos yesterday. It was the following; “When we die and see a bright light, what if that bright light belongs to an intergalactic angler fish, attracting us towards it so it can consume our eternal soul.” *Credit goes to ShiftySprinkles (the author of the aforementioned comment).*
Fun (totally not made up) fact. That's why ancient cultures would bury their dead with weapons or goods. It was either to battle the cosmic angler fish or barter for your soul.
Think you nailed it. Also, yeah - Matrix should have REALLY gone with the "they're using our neurons" rather than "we're batteries when they obviously have fusion"
Mirror neurons and bioelectricity are not a sufficient explanation for the psychic phenomenon on display. This isn't a mere bacterial infection. Personal theory: They didn't just drill into some bacteria infected oil. They drilled into a massive eldritch entity and woke it up. The game isn't ultra-hard sci-fi, its cosmic horror.
This is my favourite dialogue from any game ever, being from Edinburgh, just hearing how everyone talks to each other is something that I’ve never experienced in a game before
I love how the subtitles translate the parts of the conversations that are Scottish slang for us normal people. This is one of those games that I really enjoyed watching someone play, but I don't think I'd play myself. I'm just not a fan of the walking simulator games but it had a pretty good story right up my ally. Edit: If you can't understand sarcasm when you see it then you need to turn off your PC and go outside.
It's true, as a scotsman I can tell you that we are the superior people, and the rest of you are....just normal. ;-) (more seriously, the way the writing and performances were done is (outside of local scottish TV) some of the best I've seen in terms of catching the constant verbal abuse of your pals in scotland. "Alright Dave ya feckin knob, how you been?" "Better than you ya dappy cunt, looks like you ate a whole cow in the last couple of weeks and it all went to yer feckin belly" Properly sounds like the sort of back and forth you'd hear in any scottish blue collar area.
The way Roanoke describes being merged with this thing in Still Wakes The Deep is how I imagine what it would be like to become part of a hivemind. Sure you are in there, but you lose everything about yourself and all individuality that makes you "you." In other words absolutely horrifying and not a desirable outcome at all.
I understand your fear of the angler fish. My phobia is cockroaches. I was remodeling a house as a summer job back in high school. While I was working on a section of the ceiling, it broke and I was COVERED IN ROACHES! They got in my hair, my clothes, I almost ate a few in my panic. I will not weep if we wipe roaches from existence.
The fungi outbreak in Joplin has also been observed in other areas after multi vortex violent tornadoes, what made it so devastating in Joplin was that it exposed a whole town to the fungi. Its sad but fascinating
That's actually the original idea of the creative director. He directly said "the thing set on an oil rig" and then went from there. I mean...fair. The thing is already terrifying enough being in the arctic...what's scarier? Being on a man made structure miles out into the frigid sea...
I personally headcanon that Addair was the most conscious of the bunch. It seems like he, as a person, knew EXACTLY what was going on around him and has enough control over his functions to speak (given he sometimes says 'run away... that's what you always do' if he loses sight of you), and he's actually ENJOYING what the Shape is making him do. The spite in his voice as he mocks and belittles Caz is completely genuine.
Addair is also just a general cunt, and is part of the 1970's UK equivalent to the Nazi party, so he could also very likely have been only about as aware as the rest, he's just unique in that he's competing for first place award of 'biggest douche on the rig' with Rennick
I like the idea of an oil drill unearthing some kind of ancient horror. Oil is essentially comprised of dead matter from plants and animals from before dinosaurs even existed, so it feels more believable that something like what was presented in the game could of just been dormant instead of some extraterrestrial entity.
Roanoke, there are some flaws in your theory. You think it adds more people to itself however it has been shown several times that the changed crew members also just kill and leave the bodies. For example the second dead crew member we come across, Sunil, is up there on the deck with Muir roaming about and was presumably killed by him. The third one meanwhile is being fused with the mass of flesh that is all throughout the hull of the rig however he appears to have died before being fused. The fourth is Dobbie who is grabbed and killed in Muir's introduction and adds further proof that the people are not automatically added to the warped masses of bodies that has become of the changed nor to the main mass released by the drill. Also, several bodies can be found throughout the accommodations section that are not part of the mass but appear to have been brutally killed during the third visit to the section which further points to the changed crewmembers just straight up killing those they encounter and leaving most of the bodies alone. Further in various parts of the game Caz has to swim through oil and water in flooded sections, like the Pontoons, so if this were a bacteria or virus in the oil then Caz should have already changed several times over. In addition Rinnick warned Caz "not to touch the stuff all over Beira" implies he was talking about the flesh not oil given that the oil isn't all over the rig but the otherworldly flesh growths ARE which further disproves the oil theory. It is far more likely that whatever causes the changes to the body requires either direct contact with the flesh growths for some period of time or something like going mad while looking at it. One skippable moment is Raffs later in game who was the guy going on his first dive and is in the diving bell we bring up after the incident with the drill and is later seen as a blob of flesh poking out of it, he most likely changed while inside of the bell.
@@kabob0077 true. I still wonder if post-mortem you can still become the creature despite being deceased or if you aren't just turned into nutritional soup.
I always just thought the larger, saved limbs were like the Deadoes from RIPD. Renneck had an ego, the engineer was tied to a bunch of tech, I think it was Addair that was all over the rig because he basically ran to do and get things for everybody else...
I'm really glad Roanoke accounted for the floating debris. I'd had that same thought hearing him talk about the organism producing a powerful magnetic field. Producing more and more field strength, until loose debris starts orbiting in it. Been wondering about that since seeing it in the game.
Based on your conclusions, I'd have to say either it lives within the oil beneath the ground or, it could have existed on the surface of the seabed, which isn't exactly as barren as we think. The whole thing is just a mass of dead organisms. Yeah we could use it for something, but if we did it would massively disrupt the ecosystem of the seabed and we just don't know enough about it. My point is, if the oil is organic based, perhaps it had simply subsumed that biomass. But if it did it would have choked itself out long ago. I think it was accessing the seabed and while it wasn't "rich" with life, had enough to sustain it. When the rig punched into the hole beneath, it erupted in food and quickly shot up the drill and (if it wasn't there already) down into the oil reservoir, providing it with the necessary biomass to grow like it did up the drill itself. Otherwise it doesn't explain where the fuel for that came from. So I think based on that, it was living on the seabed, just wherever it could, either the drill released it or fed it, but either way it got hold of the tasty and ran with it. Not a big thing, just thought you had a really interesting take on it.
I think we have three big missouts in the game (dont get me wrong I think the game is absolutely mind boggingly fantastic): 1. We never see a person turn into an aggro-monster. Would have been really good addition to the horror to actually see somebody Caz knows for a long time turn into a monster that then attacks him. Ofc the passsive blobs attack him from time to time, but the aggro-monsters are already turned when you meet them. 2. We never see the "Lab". there is supposed to be a lab somewhere on the rig. usually to test the oil, but maybe they could have placed hints there that there was something wrong with the oil even before and Rennick supressed the evidence to keep the Rig going. Would have added greatly to the story, I think, to hear that this guys greed and some yesmen have doomed the Rig many days before the actual event. 3. Caz needed that breakfast!!! We also have to keep in mind how damn cold that ocean actually is. that organism may develop much much MUCH slower down there, so it developed accelerators to survive and thrive. But when exposed to more oxygen and warmer temperatures, these accelerators work on overdrive! Meaning the warmer it gets, the faster it grows until its energy is completely spent. So there could be a chance that the heat of the explosion of the Rig may have actually COMPLETELY escalated the growth of whatever survived the explosion.
When Caz is on his way to the helicopter to tell them to wait Rennick is talking with the other guy about leaving but you can hear Rennick make a straining/groaning sound like he’s already changing/been infected. He also told Caz to not touch the stuff so it would seem like he knew it had an effect on them.
There is a TV show called Surface that aired from 2005-2006. Unfortunately there's only one season of it, but I think there is enough information in that season that you could make a video about the main creature from the show. I find the concepts in the show fascinating and I thought it would be something right up Roanoke's ally.
learning that oil doesn’t mostly come from ancient organisms is the most comforting thing in this video I’ve ALWAYS loved fossils and the thought that we’re destroying them as always been a massive bummer for me, so my innerchild is a little happier now
C Diff. It's the bacteria that causes C Diff, which is a dangerous form of colitis that causes HORRIBLE diarrhea. It's actually common, and is often triggered by antibiotic treatment cus it the rest of ur gut bacteria get Thanosed while this stuff survives and then takes over. In spite of how common it is, it is very serious and life threatening if left untreated (can easily cause dehydration). clostridium difficile is the name he said. Some antibiotics can work depending on the strain, but this is a condition that can actually require a fecal transplant to treat (taking poop from a healthy patient and putting it in ur colon to have their healthy gut bacteria compete with the C. Diff bacteria) because of antibiotics resistance (remember that the condition can be triggered by taking antibiotics, typically for a different bacterial infection. It is also highly contagious. Look into it.
@@VoteOrDie99 Very highly contagious. I used to work in a hospital as a house keeper (was suppose to be in the linen room but the company that took over cleaning and such screwed up bad) and unless you had specific training and knew what you were doing, you were not to clean a C. Diff room. Those got special disinfectant and were to be left alone for a period of time so it would die off once the patient was discharged. You were also strapped head to toe in PPE. Didn't get a lot of patients with it, but it was well known to keep it well contained when there was one (I had the fortune of getting to avoid such rooms at least)
c. difficile is one of the reasons why doctors don't pass out antibiotics like they used to. it's actually is a species that's a part of our intestinal biota, but in healthy adults it can't accomplish much because its growth is limited by all the other bacteria. wipe out those species though, and suddenly there's a lot more room and resources for c. diff to multiply. doesn't help that it's resistant to treatment unless you a) carpet bomb the patient's system with intense antibiotics or b) perform a fecal transplant to rebalance the gut's ecosystem. even in external environments it's a whole fucking thing because it forms spores that can't be killed with consumer grade cleaners, and my microbiology professor went so far as to say that hand washing is the only way to disinfect yourself after handling c. diff-contaminated material, since it physically removes those spores.
The devs twitter reposted an image of “doggerland” which is an area of land that eventually disappeared due to rising sea levels. It was in the area of the North Sea and the Viking region (where the Beira D resides)
Honestly what surprises me the most is the fact that Roanoke has not covered subnautica yet or the kharaa virus. Also it has stuff waaay worse than angler fish....
"This is great, just the 3 of us... You, me.. and the unyielding cacophony of flesh made manifest within the confines of the human mind's cognitive understanding."
One thing I want to add. This sort of biological madness seems to be attributed to or related to the shimmering light that this gives off as well as the headaches and hallucinations. I took that in stride with the “eldritch horror” aspect so maybe there is some “magic” or other anomalous radiation there too. It reminds me of the shimmer/shine from annihilation.
I'm just remembering something I recently watched. To survive one of the many extinction events that hit the planet back before there was even any proper surface dwelling creatures (Lichen doesn't count) a lot of marine animals literally retreated to the abyss, and, once the danger had blown over after thousands of years or so, IIRC it was poisonous algae that polluted the upper surface of the oceans, killing pretty much everything, they returned. Now the question is, how can we know if everything that swam into the depths also came back up instead of evolving to stay in the dark? Truly, the scariest things are not those we don't know at all, but those we know just enough about to wonder about.
And on that point, slightly related to the tangent, with how often it seems to come up in breakdowns like these, whether it's movies or games, meaning someone is literally thinking of it, we don't know how ancient bacteria and viruses actually acted. Sure we've studied and learned and we have models, but we can never truly know if those are 100% accurate. For example, how our modern cells contain ancient viral code and our reproduction literally mimics virus behavior, or, frankly, how multicellular life literally only happened in the first place because of something that could have at that moment just been an accident. Maybe bacteria were really the first animals, we see it in jellyfish nowadays (Also one of the first multicellular creatures to exist FYI) that a brain is actually not even an actual requirement because life finds its way. It's fascinating and terrifying to think we're all basically just like Lego for life, we can be complex or not and still work out, literally gaining or removing pieces and seeing what happens.
The fact that you can explain how a lot of these kinds of things are technically possible is actually terrifying I'm sure game, movie, etc creators aren't putting this much thought behind it, and the fact you can still explain them, means that it seems like whatever horrific things we can imagine are possible (even if extremely unlikely)
interesting note about that, every idea a human brain has, is never actually a new idea, any new ideas are actually our brains taking some information and then combining it with other information we already have, the only time new ideas are actually generated is when you something completely unlike anything you've ever seen for the first time, and even then your brain will try to apply known information to what you see.
Worth mentioning- The creatures, with their strange odd way of moving with tentacles and spines and such? That's not deep sea creature style movement or design. They move like motile cancer cells. Seriously. Freaked me the fuck out when I realised it cos I've seen them move via timelapse down a microscope. Gave me the shivers.
I will say this much. Knowing what a horrible and incurable disease is may not be a comfort to the infected person but that knowledge can help others by determining the best containment method to prevent spreading.

Speaking of angler fish.. When I was in kindergarten, we were tasked with designing our own animals if we could create one. We were given sheets of blank paper with the prompt on it and crayons to make our perfect creature. I ended up drawing what would essentially be an angler fish. Once I was finished, the child to the left of me had drawn what could be summed up to a tiger with 3 extra legs, and he told me how much faster they were compared to my animal which made me mad. I proceeded to tell this kid while pointing at my creation: "I control these. They're coming for your parents." To which he retorted: "They can't come on land." *me: hurriedly scribbling legs, then showing the kid again.* The kid started balling bloody murder and screaming for the teacher. I ended up suspended. Love that memory.
Dude, I'm so glad you covered this game!! I was watching IGP play it and thinking, "Roanoke NEEDS to cover this!" It reminded me so much of the Corruption in Dead Space!
It is fascinating, but one thing that blows a huge hole in this, puns not intended, is the fact that the organism doesn't violently defend itself when Caz casually strolls into the derrick with the lighter. At that point, Caz was really being affected by the organism and it would have known his intentions. If it took on human traits, the biggest one would be the will to live. It wouldn't have kicked back, proudly playing it's heartbeat beat with it's own personal disco light show for Caz to hear and see.
About the number of crew on the rig. I believe it's said somewhere that they're operating as a skeleton crew for Christmas. So there'd be much less crew on board at the time
You're such a great story teller. The amount of time you spend digging into the lore is immeasurable. I cannot wait to get a chance to play this one. It's "The Thing" on an Ocean Oil Rig, Say Less!
The enemies in this game, with their fragmented consciousness, are VERY reminiscent of the shibito enemies in the Siren series. I'm not going to assume these developers outright ripped off the idea, but immediately Siren is what I flashed back to. The shibito seemed to have no inkling that anything had changed about them, or around them, and would go about their routines, talk to themselves, and retained immediate memories of recent people and events. Meanwhile they were already dead, mutated, but instinctively drawn to repetitious actions, cooperating with other mutants, and attacking humans on sight. It was so creepy and fascinating to watch shibito Tomoe wander around looking for her hairpin, complaining about its price, all the while on all fours as some dog like mutant with no idea what she's become or what time she's in. Anyway, whether it was ripped or not, I loved those games, so any similarities are very welcome. This was a GREAT project and I actually wished it were longer.

@@thegrimmlady2647 I knew to expect SOMETHING based on reviews I read but sheesh, cutter knows how to really pull at ya with the animals. Since you claimed the creature is probably an ancient microorganism, that would make the game's plot go perfectly with the plot of a sci-fi story I read almost a decade ago. I can't remember the name but it was about a gas company using a microorganism that dies in contact with oxygen as fuel, but a mutation occours where some of it becomes immune and spreads to a dumping site and starts to eat away at other organisms. It didn't cause a human mutating apocalypse, but I feel it's still similar to still wakes the deep in a lot of ways.
One of the best Horror games I've ever played. Not long but long enough, incredible voice acting, graphics and sound design. Plus being Scottish i appreciate more the language used and how they didnt tone down the accent and scottish slang, it genuinely is Brilliant. A Gaming Masterpiece in my opinion.
I read an interesting hypothesis that their behavior is influenced by their personality and thoughts when they transform. Egotisical Rennick was angry and focused on Caz leaving. Muir cared for Innes and died holding his body, not assimilating but propping other bodies up, and asking for help. Trots was angry when something was out of place, like Caz in the vents, and put people in their rooms, trying to return things to normal. Being the union guy probably big on rules and things being correct. Gibbo was scared when left alone and guilty from killing a friend after transforming. Addair was rude, friends with Rennick, had an inferiority complex, a managerial position, was possessive, and disliked. He seemed the most lucid, guarding various parts of the rig, and seemed to enjoy hunting Caz. The two stuck in place, Roper and O'Connor, were the least lucid and repeated a few fading thoughts from before their transformation, like fear of Rennick, wanting their spouse, etc.
Id also like to think that not only do they have somewhat or their consciousness left, but the entity takes hold and influences thoughts at the same time. For example when muir says: “Come out, I can hear your heartbeat!” (which is not something a human would say, but he also talks about needing help) And addair that insults you which I think is somewhat from addair, but the entity takes over. He could say that to caz in the first place but the entity is somewhat amplifying it, which implies that it kind of corrupts the neurological area and uses some of it for control as itself.

the most horrifying implication in this whole video, is that since Gibbo was the first (I think) one to start losing himself to the entity.

The only people there are a skeleton crew of about 20 people.
well lucky for them huh? honestly, if there’s anyone I’d want to stay on that rig the most while everyone else goes home, it’s Rennick

There is a board with the names of the crew, there were at least 30-40 of them

@@InfantryWoman 31

@@the_furry_inside_your_walls639get out of my walls! I can't hear myself think from your damnable scratching.
It also is unable to revive already dead corpses, it wants them alive, which means that they are alive and "conscious" inside those blobs
Also it isn't an instant assimilation into the blobs, seeing how Caz does get grabbed by a tentacle at some point,
I am assuming is that whatever they dug into was alive, and it proceeded to instinctively grabbed the drill and whatever it was attached to, since the "main mind" is able to make its fibrous tendrils at the bink of an eye.

Unrelated but my favorite character was Finlay. She was the true MVP. one of the more interesting things is when fixing the generator there is a key in the key box clearly with a giant tag on it different from the others labeled "Lab key".
For the lab key, oil rigs do actually have labs on them so they can take samples of the oil and test it to see what quality it is

Good theory! Though I doubt we will ever know.
I'm with that that theory
That actually makes a lot more sense, especially given if Rennick was already turning, Archie probably would've tried to jump ship earlier, leading to the chopper crashing elsewhere on the rig.
Rennick only turning once off the chopper makes more sense too given we don't see any large holes on the chopper's fuselage, however the side door is unlatched making it more likely Rennick got out before changing and not the other way around.
*When Caz says, "His ears are still working." I'm pretty sure he's saying that when he attracts one of the monsters if he makes noise like jumping*
Muir is actually NOT several people, its just him, he actually goes out of his way to not absorb his victims, instead propping them up to sit, either dead or dying

This isn't a mere bacterial infection.
Personal theory: They didn't just drill into some bacteria infected oil. They drilled into a massive eldritch entity and woke it up. The game isn't ultra-hard sci-fi, its cosmic horror.

It's true, as a scotsman I can tell you that we are the superior people, and the rest of you are....just normal. ;-)
(more seriously, the way the writing and performances were done is (outside of local scottish TV) some of the best I've seen in terms of catching the constant verbal abuse of your pals in scotland. "Alright Dave ya feckin knob, how you been?" "Better than you ya dappy cunt, looks like you ate a whole cow in the last couple of weeks and it all went to yer feckin belly"

Weirdly enough, its the only walking sim game I've played myself, and it was actually a blast because of how well paced it was.

Wow, I was not expecting still wakes the deep. Basically" the thing" on an oil rig this game is terrifying.
Babe, wake up, a new Roanoke video just dropped.
I mean. How long until the mass feeds on those bodys and uses em....
@@Slimpicken Probably a few hours but Roanoke implied that everyone the changed killed was immediately added to either them or to the mass.
@@kabob0077 true. I still wonder if post-mortem you can still become the creature despite being deceased or if you aren't just turned into nutritional soup.
@@Slimpicken You just turn into the goopy ocean lasagna once you're dead. Your dead neurons aren't worth adding to the collective.
Muir also grabbed another worker when you meet with Innes, McClurg
Horseshoe crabs, a beak, tentacles, spiderlegs, eyeballs, sounds like the thing.
I finished this game the day before yesterday and was hoping you'd come to it.

And feet. Always start with feet 😁
I think we have three big missouts in the game (dont get me wrong I think the game is absolutely mind boggingly fantastic):

This game was absolutely the most amazing concept and one of the best voice acting I’ve ever heard. Ending made me cry
There is a TV show called Surface that aired from 2005-2006. Unfortunately there's only one season of it, but I think there is enough information in that season that you could make a video about the main creature from the show. I find the concepts in the show fascinating and I thought it would be something right up Roanoke's ally.

@@VoteOrDie99Man, that’s disturbingly interesting.. 🤨

"This is great, just the 3 of us... You, me.. and the unyielding cacophony of flesh made manifest within the confines of the human mind's cognitive understanding."
the pizza tower reactions to that godsforsaken microbe made me spit out my energy drink, thank you roanoke.
The fact the changed humans do also kinda look like procariotic cells with many flageles/ pili for conjugation is a nice touch.

That also kinda goes for the editor too, considering both the youtuber and the editor have to work together for the final result
The fact that you can explain how a lot of these kinds of things are technically possible is actually terrifying
I'm sure game, movie, etc creators aren't putting this much thought behind it, and the fact you can still explain them, means that it seems like whatever horrific things we can imagine are possible (even if extremely unlikely)
interesting note about that, every idea a human brain has, is never actually a new idea, any new ideas are actually our brains taking some information and then combining it with other information we already have, the only time new ideas are actually generated is when you something completely unlike anything you've ever seen for the first time, and even then your brain will try to apply known information to what you see.
The audio of that guy screaming in the diving bell was disturbingly well done

They're coming for your parents."
To which he retorted: "They can't come on land."
*me: hurriedly scribbling legs, then showing the kid again.*
The kid started balling bloody murder and screaming for the teacher.
I ended up suspended.

Maybe it absorbed everyone's depression and became suicidal?
I mean, does it even need to? Whatever's the true body should be far deeper than any fire can reach. Caz's attempt could merely be a little tickle.
18:10 damn those are big numbers, I'm surprised the editor could even write those values correctly
About the number of crew on the rig. I believe it's said somewhere that they're operating as a skeleton crew for Christmas. So there'd be much less crew on board at the time

Sometimes talking about Angler Fish makes you wish for a primordial eldritch soup monster to give you some semblance of comfort and logic
For example when muir says:
“Come out, I can hear your heartbeat!” (which is not something a human would say, but he also talks about needing help)
And addair that insults you which I think is somewhat from addair, but the entity takes over. He could say that to caz in the first place but the entity is somewhat amplifying it, which implies that it kind of corrupts the neurological area and uses some of it for control as itself.
