    Leave a comment! I'm super curious to hear about your first maintenance experience... Or if you have chosen not to have regular maintenance, I'm curious to hear how your dreads are progressing.

      I actually have a question for you😁. I'm about to start my dread journey. I've got everything to start but before I do I've been spending a week learning everything I can so I know what to expect, what to do, etc. And honesty- this is the first time in doing something to my hair without rushing into it balls to the wall flat out runnin style. I'm taking my time. Ok. So I'm watching all your videos in order. My question for you is wouldn't it help to do like a maintenance on the dreads like daily or weekly using a crochet hook- or should I be doing like this with new dreads and waiting for them to lock themseleves up (after the initial rip&twist and crochet session- I mean in the following weeks and months specifically) and also palm rolling? Most of the other videos it seems like that's the path they're taking at this point in the journey. Is there a reason you aren't doing that (or are you and I just haven't got to that point in the video- and if so- oops- sorry to bother you 😁.) Thank you for your help. Trust me- just your videos alone are a tremendous help 😁😝

    • @SarahThornburg

      Hey! Thanks for the question. I appreciate that you're taking your time and doing your research. I hope you love your dreads as much as I do. Something you probably have already figured out is everyone has opinions what you should and should not do. You get to decide what you want to do for you. I've chosen to get regular maintenance, I've seen my loctician three times in the past year and my bf has helped crochet twice. I like the look of a bit of loose hair but it's starts to bother me when it gets too much. I chose not to do regular maintenance (daily/weekly) in the beginning because I heard it will actually delay your dreads from forming. Or rather slow down the locking process. Every head is different. My hair is super straight and, it feels like, it doesn't want to dread naturally. So I balance getting maintenance when I feel like my hair needs help getting back into the mother dread. If I were more patient it will eventually lock on its own. I've seen that to be true with my ends. They are slowing developing into little dreads on their own. One thing to consider when you start out is you want your hair to move and lock without impediment so if you start your dreads super tight it will he harder to lock. Also it you add alot of decor that keeps your hair from moving, it will slow your progress. I personally like that I waited for maintenance in the beginning but everyone is different. I hope this helps. Good luck!

    Thanks for sharing your journey.
    I just got partials a few weeks ago. I have really fine, straight hair.
    I wash them 1x a week - was told to only wash my scalp (gently), then when I rinse, it cleans the rest of them.
    However, daily I care for them. In the morning I put my non dreaded hair up in a clip. I then take my fingers and work each dread at the scalp --- separating them from any hair that doesn't belong. As sometimes loose hair gets mixed within at the scalp.
    I then take each dread and palm roll them.
    I do this 2 - 3x a day...
    I'm obsessed with the palm rolling and care of them... LOL
    Also, I bought satin pillow cases and use a lint free towel after washing them. I blowdry them on and off throughout the day and let them dry fully by not putting them in a pony tail etc. I just let them hang. I wash in the morning, to assure their dry by bedtime. To prevent mold and mis-shaping...

I thought having dreads was going to be care free but it seems it's anything but. I don't think I can wait for the 3 month tidy up.. I'll probably do it again in 4 weeks. I have crochet hooks but it's hard tidying up the frizz.... im still pleased I started this journey though.

    I had mine done a month and a half ago at shop specific to dreadlocks. I have had maintenance twice since. They recommended getting maintenance done once a month for the first 6 months. I feel like 3 months is a way to long for maintenance on new dreadlocks.

    • @SarahThornburg
      @SarahThornburg  6 років тому

      Oh wow. That's interesting. I haven't heard of that recommendation but it seems like everyone does it a little different. I belong to a few Facebook groups and the general consensus is no maintenance so it's interesting to hear your experience. My hair was so loose I couldn't stand it. I wonder if your so made the recommendation based hair type or is that just their standard?

    • @801DREADLOCKS
      @801DREADLOCKS 6 років тому +2

      Sarah Thornburg That is just their standards. My hair is close to the same texture as yours. I believe maintenance is less time consuming if you your doing it in a shorter time frame, as well makes it easier for your dreads to mature in the beginning stage.

    • @90swil
      @90swil 6 років тому +1

      Technically you don't have to maintain your hair at all and it should still dread. This is a business giving you advice. I'm not saying it's wrong just be mindful that it's your money theyre mostly after :)

    • @801DREADLOCKS
      @801DREADLOCKS 6 років тому +2

      Wil Hughes technically you’re correct. However that also depends on the person getting dreadlocks, if they want to go that route or maintain neat dreadlocks in the beginning stages I can tell you after each maintenance I have done my locks have gotten tighter and produce less loose hair each time. Maintenance just speeds up the process.

    They are getting lovely and chunky.
    I started mine with super short hair. Just below the earlobe bob so it didn't develop quite so bonkers as long hair does. I did them by myself DIY.
    I crocheted them differently to her technique though. Tighter back combing and less twisting. I used a squeezing technique between thumb and fore finger then crocheted that area so it makes a tighter look.
    Everyone starts their locks their own way and there is nothing wrong with how yours were started.
    It's just time, time and more time waiting for them to shrink and create loops. 😜☺️
    Though, now you've past the 3 month stage and had maintenence they are looking really really good! 😍😍
    Hope you are pleased with them. Mine are knocking 3 and a half months.
    I do root rubbing every month to help the new hair at the scalp create knots.
    Keep um going! They are looking super!

    Stop interlocking your gonna hurt your dreads in the long rum. trust me I’ve learned from it. My hairs thick and strong it still hurt some of my dreads. Go freeform, let nature take course. Make some scented sea salt spray, spray how ever much your type needs and towel rub everyday twice a day for 5-10 minutes each time. Dont over use sea salt spray you can dry you dreads out and your hair will snap. Keep the journey going namaste

It's one year now for my dreads and they are super tidy and well seperated like yours now. @@SarahThornburg I've got nobody close to keep up on maintenance and it's so damn expensive when I gotta go.. Also I really just want to run a brush through my hair.. Lol... I started mine while traveling and I really do love them... I know they will be hard to part with.. I might keep a few peekaboos.. Just time for a change I suppose

      That's fair. I can understand wanting to run a brush through your hair. My favorite is massaging my scalp in the shower. It's so so nice. I'd love to hear how it goes. Good luck! ❤️

    i made my own dreads and it locked up better than yours to be honest.. maybe because i have larger sections and i have asian hair which is coarser in texture.. i learned that it is better to use smaller size crochet hook if you wanna create tighter locks.. i used size 9 when i crochet it, and its kinda loose.. at first month i got a maintenance from a professional loctician and they used 1, and it locked up really tight that i have to squish it with my finger tips to loosen a little bit.. i think we should crochet it just right to achieve better results and for the dreads to mature easily. looking at your dreads though after your maintenance, im seeing better hope.

      Yes, that first maintenance was a life saver! How old are your dreads? I'm so jealous of your texture!

      Sarah Thornburg it Is only 2 months now.. dont be jealous.. we have different hair types but once matured, they all look almost the same, it only varies in size and color.. in fact, thin hairs mature faster.

    I suspect that you wanted natural dreadlocks and that they develop on their own ?!
    if that is the case, palm rolling can help your loose hair wrap around the corresponding dread.
    with shampoo that dries out your hair (eg men's shower gel), you can also support the felting process (really washing out is important !!!)
    Please, no matter what you do, NEVER use wax or similar products. for people with straight hair, as well as you and me, that is totally counterproductive !!!
    I also make dreadlocks for other people, or arrange them again, extend the dreadlocks on request. With artificial products as well as real hair.
    I'm sorry for my bad english. :(

      Yes! All very good tactics. I haven't heard anything good about wax so I don't plan on using it. It's so good to hear from other experienced people in the dreadlock industry. Thank you.
