Wynton Marsalis & Eric Clapton - Layla

- After some talking to the audience by Clapton, which is very rare, the band play a fantastic New Orleans version of Clapton's most famous song.
Recorded April 2011, Jazz at Lincoln Center, New York City.
I love this treatment of Layla. It gives the music room to breathe and spread out like a warm blanket, to wander down a few backstreets and back again. And, as someone else said below, it shows you Clapton's range and flexibility as a musician. Of course, Wynton Marsalis and the other guys are all master's of their craft, as well, and they all bring their superb musicianship to the party. A feast for the ears and the soul. Oh, and a splendid speech by Clapton at the beginning, as well.
I feel like Wynton told Clapton beforehand to sing this song as if everything that had led up to it happened just before he took the stage. I haven’t heard this level of pain in his voice since the original. Almost brings a tear to your eye.
The intro is on a whole nother level.
I love that “to wander down a few backstreets and back again” which is so true of both music and humor. Like a comedian who wanders down some hilarious rabbit hole, and 20 minutes later times it all back together to the initial bit, with a lovely bow and presents it to the audience. Jazz is especially proficient at this. Meander, like a marriage that’s so comfortable, you know each other’s strengths so well, and play to them, let the weaknesses wander away, and always come back stronger and better.
To hear EC and Wynton is such a treat. Sounds effortless and seamless. The playing is so masterful, you kind of forget how brilliant these guys all are. 💕
Eric never stops playing or leaving the blues - he just learns how it fits into jazz...brilliant..
Eric's speech as the start, paying homage to jazz and Wynton and all of the guys he's with on stage is CLASSIC!
Man, the pain in Clapton's voice... gorgeous.
Haven’t heard that since the original.
I have never seen a song with 3 versions in which i loved all of them.Long Live Clapton
Supreme rendition indeed. Eric is the man who made me fall in love with music. I loved this beyond any limits.
I was sat in the audience to the left of clapton during unplugged. We felt so exited to hear 'that' layla for the first time and played so well. one take was all that was needed. when I heard this version I actually realised (for the first time) that it is a blues song. simple lyrcs with such depth and honesty. Clapton commits much more on this version than on U.P. awesome
This is absolutely the greatest thing to have blessed my ears
This is what jazz musicians are all about - respect for the talent of another. You can see it on their faces. Each raises the bar to inspire the rest. To them there’s always another perspective to view from and explore. This version raised the hair on my arms. I ordered the DVD. A brilliant idea from bassist Carlos Henriquez. Carlos, Dan Nimmer (P), Ali Jackson (D) in this band, were with Wynton @ Newport RI in August and I recorded them on that beautiful August day and uploaded 2 videos.
What all around great humbleness from such great musicians. For Wynton to have a great respect for Clapton and for clapton to supercede that admiration is what makes great music.
one of the best "new" pieces I have seen or heard in a long time. It IS a fabulous collaboration. Wish I had been in the audience!
I'm really grateful to all of the Artists who have created these various versions of this one song.
It's a masterpiece of already a masterpiece.
Wonderful!
that was cool when it started swinging during Wynton's solo
Just showed how the whole band could turn on a dime - collective improvisation at its finest!
@@Ubu987 Dollars to donuts that was on the spot improv. Completely agree.
This is great. And you know when it's a good piece of music when you can play it in any genre'!
🤎🎶 Magistral🎶🤎 Et toujours aussi élégant ,gracieux et reconnaissant Mister Clapton. Unique personnage 🤎🎶🤎 L'Honneur et la Gratitude étaient dans les 2 camps!! 🌺🌺
Clapton is so right in his speech lmao i would shit my pants if i was playing with wynton marsalis
Papa bue
Yea, that would be intense.
Duas grandes feras... Maravilha.. Inesquecível.. Que harmonia..excelente.
Preceded by a most thoughtful and articulate introduction by EC (and he always is, I have no idea why he's reluctant to speak onstage), this epochal performance of his signature tune, this encapsulization of American Music led by one of its greatest exponents (a Brit, no less) represents version #4 for him...
...which means that this tune has now become, for him, what "All, Or Nothing At All" became for Sinatra.
Hearing Marsalis and Clapton on the same stage is a treat: Getting to watch this is a privilege.
(EC, to his credit, takes a lot of vocal risks and liberties here, and he succeeds at all of them.)
Addendum, two years later:
Seeing Clapton play the King's signature axe, an ES-335, in this setting, is not only an unexpected pleasure, it is really, really RIGHT.
Damn, that was beautiful!!!!
Professional musicians having fun.
Clapton is such a generous musician.
Love Clapton, love Marsalis, love them together! Can't take anything away from the original....it was a classic. But this is fantastic also.
wonderful Eric wonderful, the great Wynton Marsalis and his fantastic
musicians just magical
I love this rendition!
Wynton & Eric, dos grandes conservando la tradición de los blues en el auténtico estilo New Orleans.
Wow! I was at this show, and I was blown away. I personally believe that Clapton has not yet reached his prime. He will always keep improving. His musical peak will be the day he dies. No down-slope whatsoever.
that clarinet solo!!!
??? What clarinet solo?
yes He definitely took that one
Love this soul-ful version of Layla. What a concert!
É um absurdo o nível de perfeição que esses caras alcançaram nessa música.
A very crafted version of Layla :) ! And Mr. Clapton is a real showman with that discourse ...
At first I was like nah they ruined it. But the more I listened, the more I began to feel it. I just couldn't help but sing a long, in a high pitched hurtful wail. Pls do a vocal duo with a black jazz singer. I really love EC's voice and b'lieve it would be enhanced even moreso, with a singer like Louis Armstrong for example. Amazing guitar work as always EC and fantastic bluesy backing, this version really took me to a different place from the mundanity of my daily life TY! Mr clarinet guy!
Look how mister Eric Clapton plays the solo... that feeling... sound of Gods... Anyone, who think that it is not so hard to play like this - take the guitar and do it.. Sound of Gods.. crazy old man..
The little tips o' the hat to Duane get me all choked up. Wow.
thanx, thanx, thanx, thanx, thanx, for posting.
damn this good ! Left me a bit hungry for some New Orleans style music.
You can find a lot on UA-cam.
Fantastic......Great show Guys.....
No one should EVER retire from making music. Stop listening if you'd like, but don't ever ask someone to quit what comes so naturally to them.
That was amazing! Such a cool sound.
To je to nejlepší co jsem v poslední době slyšel!
Thank you Jay, My favorites.
Might be the best performance I’ve ever seen.
Eric Clapton, what a great guy!! It's been soo much long time since he begun, so much years went by, and he's still keep on making music.
Absolutely outstanding! Thank you. XXX
Wow. Simply wow. As good as it gets.
Buenas tardes. Maravillosa canción. Sublime interpretación.
Clapton is obviously a big admirerer of Jazz, but let's not forget that the Blues was first and was a birth giver to all other modern music genres. Even Jazz.
Blues is the roots, the rest is the fruits.
Brian is correct. Blues was not first.
Church music and marches were first. Check out your history.
I have to agree
Classical and Baroque were the first
A música "Layla" com um tempero de jazz, inigualável, linda..genial.
Magnificent, magnificent, magnificent....
Good God these are what true musicians sound like
unglaublich....weltklasse....DANKE
damn I am on my knees HAHA This one's just phenomenal. Love Wynton, jazz music and Clapton. There's so much power in this song, you can almost touch it !!!!!!!!!!!
This is a match made in music heaven.
OMG! I'm about to cry!!! This is JUST PERFECT!
ZDOROWO!!!--Winton & Eric it is good!!! Они показали,уже в который раз,что они не
зря сотрясают в экстазе залы слушателей,для которых они играют,а это уже явно
обожание,ради которого стоит выдавать всё чем ты обладаешь в мире музыки!!
-- BRAVO!!!
Some people don't understand. Eric Clapton is a God in what he do, making music, doesn't mean that he is the real God of the world.
WOW! Thanks for posting.
true classic Blues n Jazz greats!
Song starts at 2:57
It's a hollow-body electric. Made to be plugged in to an amp although it has more of a natural volume and tone than solid-body electrics do. Its acoustic properties likely do impact the sound of it when amplified, but they are also popular because they look and feel really nice.
More please. Cheers Gray Australia
Thank You Carlos!!!
Owh my days this was the sweetness!
Clapton with a Gibson and rocking Persols. My man!
layla one of the most beautiful songs ever
What a gem
I don't have words to express my gratitude to the person who posted this. A gazillion karma points. Anybody who doesn't like it should go back to school.
7:01 I love this awesome moment! Great voice and guitar
Wow. Mind blowing.
OUTSTANDING!!!!!!
Just GREAT!
AMAZING!
Amazing!!!
Best version of Layla that i've heard
Using this song as an example and reference can be a real life saver when you are in court defending yourself against someone who has maliciously and dishonestly misquoted you especially when it's true that you said the words but those words were the denotations and not the connotations and were the other homonyms.
Like both 🤩
With Eric, now mature and secure enough to branch-out in this creative respect, makes me wonder what other greats that have passed would have been able to contribute ? Jimi, Janice, Jim, Brian, etc...?
INCREDIBLE!
Love how Wynton is mimicking Eric in his solo
You don’t need to be the best guitarist technically to create multiple number one classics world wide. You just need soul and a creative mind.
Clapton was raised by a Scottish single mother named Clapton, and not knowing who his father was. In the year 2000, while touring Canada, a fan took him a grave near Montreal and told him that the person buried there was his father, a Canadian who had been stationed in Scotland during WWII. This Canadian father played sax in jazz and dance bands from the 1930s until his death in the 1990s. For Clapton to play with jazz great Wynton Marsalis is a deeply moving homage to the father he never knew. Source: the Clapton memoirs published early this decade.
alnot01 check your source cause u only a bit right,it was a journalist (fan as well) that traced erics father, and the rest is bullshit,he was raised by his grandmother rose and her husband so his step grandad Jack clapp(the closeness of surnames just a coincidence)he grew up thinking his mother was his older sister as she was only 16 when he was born, and they.are from Ripley in Surrey just outside london,no Scottish connections (sauce his autobiography)
The essential facts are that his mother was a British unwed mother, and that his father was a North American jazz musician he never knew. That the person who discovered who Clapton's father was, was a Canadian journalist as well as a fan, is an inessential detail.
That's a great interpretation and surprisingly the slow New Orleans tempo works out good.
Very interesting version of this song.
GreAT speech ERIC VERY STRONG ENDING EVERYONE ON THAT STAGE. WOW !!!!
Brilliant!
Black soul!! Haitians, welcome to Chile!
Trad Jazz, love it!
Awesome,thk you.
done so fine
Oh dear, so superb. I worked with a girl who was called Laila, I asked her was it the song, she was named after she said , no the hijacker!! Don't know if anyone remembers that one.The aeroplane hostage situation!
... great introduction.
Wynton has gained more of my respect after watching him collab with Eric Clapton.
The only man on the strings better than Clapton, is Hendrix, of whom Clapton even claimed was better than he ever could be. Thing was that Hendrix was a hardcore fan of Clapton, and called him a great teacher. So, I guess in actuality they are both just incredible, and the other is better to the other. RIP JIMI JAMES. And Clapton is playing with the great Wynton Marsalis? Damn, this is history right here.
Paco De Lucía. Praised by Keitch Richards among others.
Nes Policy Clapton knew exactly (and he said it) that Duane Allman was the best guitar player he has ever seen.
Last Kayle EUW
No, he said that Allman had his favorite guitar solo. But as far as the most skilled player he's ever met, he said Hendrix brother. Hendrix mastered a CREAM song that Clapton struggled to play, and that pissed him off for years. Later on, he confessed that Hendrix was the most skilled player he'd ever met. He played with his teeth, behind his back. Allman couldn't do that.
I disagree. Hendrix killed himself, and Clapton is here
delighting us with the greatest blues guitar ever. And Marsallis is great.
Nes Policy and prince ....claptom said the same of prince.
I already said Clapton is my (only) God !
Dit is ongelooflijk goed
Both Clapton and Marsalis do many excellent collaborations. While they bring different styles to the performance, this is typical of what they both do
WYNTON MARSALIS ORCHESTRA IS OUT OF THIS WORLD.......GOING BACK TO THE COTTON CANDY CLUB YEARS.....THE CREAM PF THE CROP. THOSE RAPPERS YOUNG DUDES BETTER AIM HIGH TO UPPER ATMOSPHERES IN MUSIC......LEARN FROM LUMINARIES LIKE MR. MARSALIS AND HIS MUSICIANS......
Thank You Carlos ! :)
TNKS + VSM ND EC HAPPY NEW YEAR 2018
The negative way, you look about this , keeps the war in this world
these talents would have changed the music without help from our dearly respected oldtimers , look forward not back
I wasn't sure about an old rocker doing jazz. Whaaaat to way cool, wynton, and the band members were as impressive as clapton.watching them play is as cool as hearing, easy expertise.
It's a hollow body (semi-acoustic). And yes, like the other lad said, it is a guitar lol. Something like this: Gibson Memphis 1959 ES-335 (Vintage Burst V.O.S.)
