Think you Davie for another great tutorial. Keep them coming, really enjoy watching and listening to someone who has so much experience. Wishing you all the best and God bless.
Brilliant fly, loved the chartreuse and black. I will be tying some of these. I don't have rhea because it is too expensive for me. I do have colored peacock herl though. Having a great time tying though I haven't been able to fish them. I was asked to join the local tying and fishing club. I took it as quite an honor. All the best to you and yours. Sean
Hi Sean, If you do a search of your area you may be able to find a Rhea farm which if you give them a call you may be lucky to buy the feathers as they would normally throw them away, I do know of friends that did this...It's great to hear that you have been asked to join your local tying and fishing club which I'm sure you'll enjoy and contribute a lot of knowledge to with all the patterns you have been tying... All the very best Davie
All thanks to you and others like you who give of their time and talent to teach share their methods and expertise to further the sport they love. Thanks ever so much I cannot tell you how much I appreciate it. If I could go to one place, I would choose Scotland just in hopes of meeting you. All the best to you and yours. Sean
Started tying intruders several years ago and not only are they time consuming to tie the material cost is high . I like the way you incorporated the golden pheasant it gives it a great look . Switched over to tying them now in mostly synthetic materials . I will see how they work this year . Steelhead on the Clearwater in Montana then in Alaska for silvers . Should give me a good idea of how durable the synthetic are . Although they are time consuming they are one of my favorites and there are endless ways to tie them . And it is winter after all :-)
Intruders are fun to tie but as you said they are time consuming and a lot of the materials aren’t cheep . See you were using a Regal vice 9 years ago , why did you change ? Heading out in two days to swing for steelhead , should be fun . Thanks for sharing
Very nice tye Davie. May I recommend OPST (Olympic Peninsula Skagit Tactics) Steelhead Shanks. If you are tying intruders, this is the best shank on the market. A nice round eye, with a straight, robust shaft 1.16mm diameter. The kind I like are precisely 2 inches long
+Davie McPhail also take a look at Gel-Core Fritz (www.flybox.co.uk) and Enrico Puglisi wire brushes and tarantula legs (www.epflies.com). I use these to give intruder rhea feathers a bit of a life off the body and they flow extremely well in moving water. Very animated. flybox also make a strange / interesting product called "Neon Flash" which is like Krystal flash but it is opaque, solid, bright color and very shiny. Added to rhea of the same color and the fibers go crazy in the water due to the very thin flash material flapping around. Thanks
Have you ever tested, how much pull it takes, to rip the hook off the body wire? When I was a "young" fishing nerd, I tested all knids of knots on different thicknesses of hooks aso, just to know as much as possible, and that I couldn't have made any wrong choices - for when I'd loose the big one..
Hi Mike Liberty, I haven't used pipe cleaner myself though I have seem one or two tyers using them and tied some nice flies..What I have used is the small dubbing brush material by Jan Siman, here is a link to the materials he uses to form them...shop.siman.cz All the very best Davie
Hiparticlepete1, They would look great on any tree and I had to hide them from my daughter especially the pink ones, I'm glad you liked them... All the very best Davie

HiStefan Skovbo, I would love to upload my videos to 1080p but when you have an upload speed of 0.5 then you would understand why I don't..I do hope that fibre optic will be here sooner than later.... All the very best Davie
Great looking fly Davie. Colours look great with each other. Just wondering if they sell the rea feathers on line? How short of can you go with the intruder arm in what mm Davie. Thanks for sharing mate. Cheers. Best Regards, Ken
Hi Ken, Sorry about the delay in getting back to you, I'm waiting to hear back from a gentleman that has Rhea so that I can put a link to it when he has added it to his website, I'm not sure how long he will take but I'll certainly let you know... All the very best Davie
Hi Davie, Just watched this as I’d like to try my hand at some micro-intruders to swing on a single handed rod next season. Do you ‘just’ reduce the scale of everything for #8s & #10s?
Hi Stuart, Yes just reduce the fly down and I'm sure you will get a great fly, I'm going to be tying some small shanks in the new year so I should get a chance to film one.. All the very best Davie..
Hey Dave... first off I'd like to thank you for the hours of entertainment, great videos! Quick question about the silicone tubing you use as a coupler between the wire and the hook. Does that hinder your ability to change out hooks or do you just slide it all the way forward onto the shank to slide the hook off the wire?
Hi Raevenswood, What you do is slip the silicone tubing down onto the hook and pull it slightly round the bend so that you can see the eye then remove the hook as you would normally do if the tubing wasn't there..I'm glad you enjoyed the video and thank you for the kind words... All the very best Davie....
Hi Paul, I used the Daiichi Intruder Trailer hook 2557 size 1 mostly for these flies when I tye them which is not very often if I am honest though I do enjoy tying them when I do...I'm glad you liked the Tippet version.. All the very best Davie

What would you recommend as an alternative to rhea? I've used ostrich plumes but they tend to hold a lot of water with their barbules making the fly heavier and more difficult to cast. Buck tail and synthetics shed water but don't provide as much movement. Can I use a few turns of blood-quill maribou? What about some sort of flash material?
Hi Stephen Palmateer, I'm not sure where you live but I do know a company that does have some Rhea although he is based in Canada and as far as I believe he can send to America as well.. If you contact Geoff Pieroway of Pieroway Fly Rods he will I'm sure be able to help you, here is a link to his website www.pierowayrods.com I have used marabou bloods and as well small Ostrich Hackles and these have been fine.. Hi Dee Burke, I bought the wire off Ebay, it's called 100m Reel Tigertail 0.45mm, it didn't cost a lot and has worked well on the flies I have tied...It doesn't give a breaking strain but I was told it was 30lb..I hope this is of some help to you.. All the very best Davie..

Sorry for another question Davie . How many mm is that shank you tied the fly on? And also what size is the hook?
Hi CoLbEeBrYaN,
I used a 40mm shank and a size 1 hook...ATB Davie...
Hi Davie - I see you've been using a Regal vise. Did you wear out the LAW vise? Enjoyed the video, as always.
HiHarold Steele,
I still have the Law which I do use for certain flies but I got the Regal to use now for all my flies and especially the videos as I hate saying to someone asking what vise do I use only to say that it was no longer being made... I'm glad you enjoyed the videos...

とても素晴らしい❗
Dear Davie,
Can I tie this on a standard long shank hook? Or will it be too bushy to hook fish?
Hi CoLbEeBrYaN,
You can but if you feel it's too heavily dressed then just reduce it to suit your pattern..

Magnificient intruder type fly. Where do you get your rea feathers?
