Thank you for these videos. Very educational and when I'm seeing you, it feels as though I'm getting a personal class from your beautiful home. Only hard part is how exhausting it is to always hear about psychopaths, as are the ones reaching for power and wealth...imo. Best wishes to you and yours. xx
I. LOVE. PROFESSOR. BARTLETT!!!! I know a bit about scholarship (my doctorate degrees are in music, but still...one has to research and lecture, etc.), and I tell you he is a brilliant scholar and a genius at THE TELLING. His passion for his subject infects his organization and synthesis, his ability to put everything contemporary together and tell it so that one remembers. Bravo! I think I could listen to him all day.
Absolutely fascinating! Superb from Professor Bartlett! The Greatest Knight, Sir William Marshal, and how different things could’ve been today without his presence! A great presentation that!!!! Brilliant!!! 🛡⚔️🛡👏👏👏👏
Ah, now this I've waited for since your earlier discussion of the Magna Carter in relation to Henry III. I wonder if Professor Bartlett would mind making a video covering William Marshal, as an addition to the video you have on him?
This is the 1st time I ever finished a 1hr video of history by a talking head, but you speak in an engaging way. So kudos to you for surprising me! I will try others.
In another one of these done by Professor Bartlett, he said that the future Edward II was never called Prince Edward because the sons of kings weren't given the title of prince for about another century. I've read Edward I called the Lord Edward, when he was the oldest son of King Henry III. Sir Maurice Powicke published KING HENRY III AND THE LORD EDWARD in 1947. I know that the title of Duke was introduced to England by Edward III for his sons - even though it had been used on the continent for centuries.
What I like about your history lectures is because you don't sound like you are giving a lecture. It's not a speech. You speak naturally, like a friend I might have over and who tells interesting stories.
Top class content as always, used to watch his documentaries on the BBC obsessively. What a shame they don't commission that kind of programming anymore...
When King Richard returned to England to retrieve his crown from king John, his majesty made the proclamation, "That henceforth and forever, all toilets shall be known as 'Johns'"....🤣🤣🤣 (Robin Hood, Men In Tights movie)
I struggled with history at school. I still can only take in broad brush strokes, but the quality of this video and the information provided still leaves me, a third rate student of history, with a desire to know more. It won't help me on my allotment growing basic necessities of life but it may help me understand why world rulers today appear to be Teflon coated.
I thought I had problems with history but later realized the problem was my history teachers. My mom had lots of great history books and it was when I focused on Roman history that bits and pieces of other histories began to stick like the spokes of a wheel to the axle.
More from Robert Bartlett please. He’s a fantastic story teller and historian. His programs on the BBC are wonderful, it shows how far that institution has fallen in recent years.
Robert Bartlett gives a very thorough and adept account of the life and reign of King John. King John is portrayed by actor Edwin Arthur -aka- Guy Rolfe in the 1953 film Ivanhoe. It's a coincidence the actor 1911-2003 (Rolfe) was born in December and died in October for his years and King John himself was also born in December and died in October for his time. (1166-1216)
Really enjoyable - informative, reflective, and with a little hidden humour behind. Some more egotistical and self-regarding media historians could take a lesson.
So here we have yet another discussion of the life of John without reference to his proposals on legal reform; the Magna Carta without referencing the military and administrative backgrounds of the rebel barons; and reference to the rebels and French taking London without referencing the achievements of William "Longespée.". (Just how long would the London merchants have supplied the French/rebel army after they stopped receiving payment?) I have to admit that the Brits are brilliant at propaganda. Most of their information is mostly true, and they supply just enough good information to justify the creation of false conclusions.
But did the Magna Carta have any real teeth to deal with unjust monarchs. If so how did Henry VII get so far some centuries later. I really enjoyed your lecture.
No 'Prince John'? I assume he was 'the Lord John', like his grandson, the future King Edward I, was known as 'the Lord Edward' during the reign of Henry III ? Would this make the future Edward II to be the first Prince Edward?

This was truly awesome!
I just subscribed. It's wonderful to have a professor giving such interesting lectures about history. Thank you.
Thank you, Professor Bartlett.
Robert Barlett is one of England's jewels of miedeval history expertise! Well done sir!

John the Last . No more King John's
Obviously a fan of Disney's animated Robin Hood.

@@brianpeck4035 Yes! Indeed!
Explained brilliantly, and great detail.
Thank you
Robert Barlett is brilliant

Pure Gold! Thanks Professor, more please!!
I was just looking for something like this about him yesterday
Good video keep op with the awsome work
Fascinating 👍
Loved this video. Thank you.
So amazing 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
King John obsesses me. I am crazy about his father, but he obsesses me.
'...in the middle of it all....King John died. It was the best thing he could do for his dynasty!' Perfectly put! 😅
Fun discussion of the ancestor of the US Constitution.
And MANY others too, although Americans tend not to care about anywhere else, not even Mexico or Canada!
Thanks for video on my ancestor King John

Robert Bartlett is excellent. What a great self-contained biography! His books are amazing, but he's even good short(er) form!
What was in Clause 61 that was so radical and ruled the feathers of King John?
Why do British people always sound smarter. I could listen to this guy all day
Because they generally are! 😉 ✌🏼
@cattymajiv well no. The English don't have a greater intellectual capacity because they are English.
Very nicely done. Thank you!
Robert Bartlett is awesome.
Brilliant talk, always lovely to hear from Professor Bartlett.
Can anyone help me identify the set of red books on the left of the screen behind him?
Ah John. So hapless, but in a fascinating kind of way.
This and one other presentation on Magna Carta are clear and superior to every other.
People will still blame Richard for John's mistreatment of noble prisoners and the murder of Arthur.
How can they blame Richard for John?
this man is amazing angevin history I'll give him a look see right now

John I is a great-great grandfather of mine... 1 of many family "problems" we do not talk a/.
😳🙄
Mine too, and William Marshall
Well, in these times of constant warfare every body would have preferred an adult over a small child!
It seems to me that English kings having affairs with married women was significantly less common than French kings having affairs with married women.
This all sounds like a chaotic mess and highly suspect as to all the royal lines. A complete sham

They are very interesting talks. However when Magna Carta talks of free men, I think it means free men and not free people i.e. men and women.

King John, a spectacularly incompetent king. Completely unworthy and unfit for the throne.
Too many adds unwatchable...a glut of them ..not even a minute in ..
