I ASKED the Ubisoft INSIDER About the Assassin's Creed Shadows Controversy!

- Today, I asked many questions I had about Ubisoft, such as bots likes and attacks, my video being taken down, random unarmed NPCs, where this was made, and so on.
NOTE: In the video caption, it says "Osaka studio closed early 2024," but it should be "late 2024." Also, "Viking Doors" is correct, not "Viking Dolls." Sorry for any confusion!
"I still can't believe this is happening, but it is. I want everyone to watch this video to hear your views about this game. I believe this video, along with upcoming ones, will provide a clearer view of what's really happening at Ubisoft, the issues they're facing, and how they actually think about this backlash. I have some conclusions at the end of the video, but I want you to share your thoughts about this as well. Also, please share this video and spread the message."
03:59 Lack of Japanese devs may have led to inaccuracies.
04:56 Japanese studios handled marketing, not core dev. No large-scale Japanese recruitment.
07:19 Insider explains NPC systems
07:49 Civilian NPCs have simple functions. AI for all NPCs is costly.
08:30 AC pioneered social stealth. Civilian kill consequences evolved.
10:04 Shadows preview lacked three-kill rule. It's now implemented.
11:14 Ubisoft should have clarified NPCs. Insider will discuss Valhalla vs. Shadows.
11:54 Mirror destruction is disrespectful. Shadows shrine destruction is sensitive.
14:23 Insider watched the channel. Japanese feedback may be ignored.
15:29 Insider criticizes leadership for shrine destruction.
16:12 Insider implies bot usage for promotion.
17:07 Insider doubts Ubisoft's video takedown involvement.
17:48 Marketing handles merchandise. Unfamiliar artist likely created torii figure.
18:29 Lack of cultural expertise led to torii misinterpretation.
19:36 This contradicts accuracy claims. Insider criticizes leadership.
20:31 Gamers and devs are suffering
21:12 Shohei still finds the game insulting
@@timestamppatrol the Tori gate would be broken in Shadows. Don't forget this game starts in the future not in the past.
Early Ubisoft did care enough to do proper research. To my knowledge that was over 10 years ago, my college used to send students to Ubisoft branches for a 1 year tenure to build skills and experience if qualified. According to my old lecturer, they stopped contact with Ubisoft around 2014.
The major difference between then and now is there are more "experts" because of the internet and everything is scrutinized far more than it used to be.
@@RemOmni there's also just a general decline in quality. Ubisoft used to talk about the research they're doing, now they off handedly mention a consultant or two.
The game is cutting corners, and the art book alone has breached some serious ethical concerns
Well well no wonder why. Nowadays it's HR, not HRD. No Development
AC used to spent a lot of effort on making landmarks in their game accurate for the time period they represent, some even got praised by academics for their models. It's amazing how the environment in AC shadow managed to be very inaccurate despite the fact that ubisoft used to have japanese branch
Wym? When has assassin’s creed been historically accurate? Still waiting 🥺🥺
so basically, either:
1. they don't have ANY JAPANESE in the quality control team or lead artist.
2. they don't have ANY JAPANESE in the graphic department AT ALL.
3. even if they don't have any of those they don't even BOTHER to hire actual cultural sensitivity team. those said "EXPERTS" are liars. if they're actually experts, you don't have this many inaccuracies!
why are they saying this game is AUTHENTIC EXPERIENCE then? if you just wanna make a buck, just say you do ubislop. stop saying you care about japanese culture. i'm not even japanese and i'm sick of this shit.
So much for their “diversity and inclusion” ubi is full of racists
you know why... Money. They don't make video game for people who cares about culture. They create game for casuals who see a Female sumo and says "why not".
Nobody in Ubisoft is Japanese at all. It was mostly comprised of French and Chinese.
@@DeptalJexus & blacks
why are japanese people needed? this is an authentic experience. its an authentic assassins creed experience. have you ever played any of the games? none of them are historically accurate..they are fiction..with aliens and time travel.. it doesnt have to respect history except when it wants to.

How do you think Japanese viewers might react to the artbook leak that suggests Yasuke acts as "second" in beheading Oda Nobunaga during his seppuku moment?
The thing is you act like Ubisoft is the first depiction of Yasuke as a samurai when there are others that depict him as a samurai or a warrior like figure so tell me where I’m wrong if I am but I guess I’ll be ignorant ig sense I can’t get a question answered

@@emulaplayz6818 Other works are completely fictional.
UBI has repeatedly stated in interviews that this is historically accurate.
Even after declaring it fiction.
Note that the name Samurai has been removed from the 「Steam」 sales page only in Japan, but it is still written as Samurai in other countries.
Sorry if there are any mistakes as it is a google translation.
@@emulaplayz6818 Let me answer for you. They claimed Shadows to be Historically accurate, of course, minus the assassins vs templars part, and when there came backlash they backtracked and stated then they took creative liberties. The other depictions of Yasuke are from fantasy games, AC is a game set in historical settings, most of them during revolutionary phases in history. Never in the history of AC have they taken a historical character and portrayed him/her to be something that they weren't, until now with Yasuke. The man was a servant not a Samurai. It is just obvious no foreigner can achieve the rank of Samurai in the 3 years he was in Japan, let alone in mid century Japan. Hope that clears some things up.
Here's one fact: there were Chinese props that were mirrored. This cannot be accidental; firstly accidentally Chinese is one thing, but accidentally mirrored is not something you can accidentally do.

I remember Ubisoft in 2009-2014 when they literally were flying over to countries doing 1000 pictures to recreate every city in the game. They were consulting with historians, museums etc.... Now, they either use CHATGPT, fictional book or stock footage to learn how the country looks. They wont tell you the truth about japanese contributors. We can literally see they didnt use any advices from historians
There’s an interview of an historian who was a consultant for this game, Pierre-Francois Souyri who studied Japanese culture and history in Japan. The interview is in french on Nota Bonus youtube channel.
He talks about samurais in general but talks a little bit about what he did for AC:S, he said he was just asked some specific questions about Japan history and culture and he said Ubisoft took some liberties with what they were fed of. Also the historian himself said it’s very unlikely that Yasuke was a samurai given the time and context. Also that female shinobi didn’t exist.😂
So clearly no historians supervised anything in the game
Exactly I completely get what you're saying that historian was probably asked things that are broad in terms instead of the right questions. So just narrating the story how they see fit culture injection or just fabrication. It would work if they said fiction, but stating history factual was the death trap. Besides the history accuracy it has so many issues going on that are hard to address.
Personally I don’t care about the female shinobi thing.
They’ve established that whole Naoe is trained, she doesn’t see any actual action until after her village is attacked.
@@chuchuleptitrain wired Japanese historian also said that Yasuke unlikely is a samurai as well as there is too no records of him being one but somehow people will twist the fact that he is🤷♂️
Apparently same happens a lot in movies. They hire historians, ask questions like "you think samurai could wield a minigun?" then when they say no they do that anyway.
@@Wayne_Wolf if you look at foreign samurais they have all been basically joseon married to family, or western "tinfoil samurais" that were important traders or arms dealers. Yasuke was none of those, he was most likely just a curiosity Nobunaga wanted to parade around like all monarchs/emperors in history much like giraffes in 1400s China, nothing to merit the rank of samurai though.
It's good that the truth can appear more and more, tired of seeing the hardcore defenders of Ubisoft and Assassin creed fan defending this game. Thank you to all those who fight for a just cause and who expose the truth and thank you, Shohei

I think it's intentional. 1- A black slashing Japanese's 2- A BLACK Samurai, one of the most sacred part of Japan history 3- Broken Torii gate 4- Releasing the game during Tokyo sarin attack anniversary 4- Having a samurai destroy temples of his own religions. Too many event concentrated in the same game. So either partially or fully intentional. But intentional none less.

This is the hypocrisy of ubishit. FOR Assassin creed mirage ubisoft hired islamic experts for authentic Baghdad recreation. But Japan historic setting they hired none bcz they hate asian culture..
They were scared of Muslim backlash, imagine all the protest around they had to deal if they make mistake, were as East Asian community tend to be more calm or quiet when dealing with these kind of stuff, aka they think they could get away with it..
Nope. They were scared because of Islamic. If they did that to Mirage, there will be no Assassin Creed Shadow
Well, Mirage was made by a different team, one that are fans of the classic versions of AC. It tracks that they would try harder to keep things as authentic as possible. They took liberties to make the parkour and stealth as fun as possible with what they had, just like the original team. Im not the bigest fan of Mirage, but it's clear the people that made it were fans of classic AC.
Ehhh! Mirage isn't that great representation of said period either.. The only reason why we don't see backlash is the accuracy of the time and location is offensive to the first world countries.. Women weren't so actively taking part in day to day jobs in Baghdad back then.. Heck! Women wouldn't even go out their homes that much back then yet Ubisoft wanted to shoehorn Western agenda to the point that there is a woman blacksmith..
@@TheGameianDark Im going to be honest and say i don't remember much of Mirage. It had such a nothing script. I hasd fun playing the game, but not much experiencing it.
Just a reminder on the topic of lacking French Consultants for AC Unity. The most jarring thing was having a game set during the French revolution having people with extremely British Accents. Not even just regular neutral english, but instead the accents of various locations in the UK with all the inflections and dialects.
I have a friend who worked in one of these contract studio. They work not only with ubi, but also EA and microsoft. Ukesoft went above and beyond to have avoided any trustworthy influence from Japan despite making a game focused on it.
Even AI is perplexed by why after all the points of insult being pointed out, they still made no efforts to get competent Historians for Japanese Culture and keep hurtling themselves on this path of disrespect, bad gameplay, and cultural inserts.
If you ever see the "100 Slaps" video, it's interesting what other studios problems that point to Ukesoft dismissive practices.
I would like to say I am sorry this happens to your culture, it is unreal to me. As a proud Romanian, I would be furious and upset if a company would have such disrespect for my country and culture. I have always been fascinated by Japan, my favorite writer of all time is Yasunari Kawabata and have read a lot about your history. Even I, who is not a historian, have seen the atrocities these people claim are "historically accurate". It will fail and will hopefully be a lesson to everyone to never do this again.
Yes, but Ghost of Tsushima is a Western-made game, and they tried hard enough not to fall into many historical inaccuracies or any historical fallacies, for that matter. So we have to rule out the whole idea that "they didn't intentionally do this or that" when every single thing is intentional.
I think they were telling more of the truth than they meant to.「弥助については、まず”私たちの侍”、つまり日本人ではない私たちの目になれる人物を探していましたが、」
To contextualize: this quote is from a famitsu interview with the creative director Jonathan Dumont. When asked why they chose Yasuke as MC, he replied that they were looking for "their samurai", a non-Japanese character who could represent their perspective.
This comment looked to me like the spark that ignited the uproar against ACS in Japan, rather than historical inaccuracy or anything else. Seeing that they had majorly messed up, the comment was censored from the article soon after.
This game is insulting not only Japan, but all the real AC customers and fans who have followed the series since 2007.

The Creed is gay. I hated the Assassins, they were incompetent idiots with a idiotic worldview and every time a bad guy templar talked it was the damn truth.
Also stop using emojis, you girl.
If I’m being charitable, they are probably trying to capture the magic of Black Flag. Edward had little to no interaction with the assassins proper. He just hunted templars cause they were in his way.
My real guess to why they don’t have anything to do with the creed now is laziness. Look at so much modern media that just destroys source material or cannon because it provides restraints on what the writers can do. To them, that makes it hard to write and they can’t do whatever they want. They don’t want to make an assassins creed game. They want to make their game and slap the franchise title on it to get sales.

In my country we have so many japanese institutions for language and culture, business and also embassies. In Canada there is also Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre. I don't understand why Ubisoft hasn't contact institutions like this, I can't believe they wouldn't have get an advise.
I want to push back against the idea that most of these issues were accidents or caused by ignorance. Someone made a choice to not have knowledgeable people involved or consulted. That is a deliberate action. I am not saying that it was a malicious action, but it was deliberate, and therefore not excusable as an accident. The individual can be forgiven for ignorance, a 20k employee company that chooses to not fact check or investigate the culture they are representing? No. They had an obvious obligation out of basic human respect to do more than they chose to do.
The Christian artifacts being destroyed by vikings actually happened in real life. Vikings are barbarians that would rape and pillage villages. It didn't matter if the citizens had any religious background. It's hard to defend a viking when they had no honor for anybody even the tribes within their culture. I could go more indepth with that, but vikings were never viewed as respectful or reasonable. The difference is Japan is respectful to the other clans they would fight to a certain extent. Yasuke was never asked to do seppoku, because he wasn't viewed as a samurai when Nobunaga was captured. I'm pretty sure destroying a shrine of another clan is not something honorable or something they would do intentional either.
It's like comparing apples to oranges the actions from vikings and samurai. They are completely different cultures so grouping them together is not really a reasonable assessment.
That's true, it's like saying that a French Knight would burn a German Knight's church, despite both sharing religion
Wikings were pagans, the cross (if made of gold) was valuable and was stolen.
I miss the studio that made Prince of Persia, Black Flag, Splinter Cell and Far Cry 2.
This current one is wearing its skin.
Ubi Quebec didn’t make any of those games.
I want to ask all Shadows defenders a question; if rest of the game stayed the same but Yasuke was replaced with Jan Joosten van Lodensteijn, would you still defend the choice?
I already asked one gentleman this but he never answered and just deleted his messages.
To me this is important because if you only defend a foreign character as the main when he's black that means you are racist and I'm telling this straight because I don't want to do a trick question, I want you to question your own perception of the issue.
Personally I just want an immersive, semi-realistic depiction of Japan with believable, authentic characters and environment that pays homage to a beautiful, fascinating culture without needless disrespect unless it's crucial for the story. This does not involve african samurais destroying shrines while hiphop plays on the background and japanese peasants bow to you like you were Amaterasu.
Personally? I would still have the same stand point if we had said character instead of Yasuke, i would still play if we had Japanese character instead of Yasuke, even if we had a terminator instead of Yasuke i would still gonna play it but how good game is we need to see the story, we have seen only a fraction so far so it's pretty much impossible to tell how it plays out at this moment and time
Ps. The right question should be if historical characters should be playable or not, and my stand on that is the following: historical characters should be left as npc's, ofc Ubisoft could play with them in form of spin-off games or character Dlc's 🤔
@@Skatha So you're a honest "don't bother me with politics, I'm just here to game and relax" guy? I can respect that.
If I can ask, are you an old fan of the franchise? You have a good point about leaving historical characters as NPCs, Yasuke would've made a good NPC or mini-boss depending on story path choices, for example you could've helped him run away or fight him depending on your choices or something.
@@ragetist I started playing ac around 2008, ofc had small breaks here and there, for example 2011 while i was serving my 9 month mandatory military service, had my kids and now here we are, started covering the game/series 2020 with Valhalla because i wanted to provide something back to the community that helped me when i was struggling with collectables and stuff like that
@@ragetist yeah possibilities with Yasuke as a side character could been endless depending on the story and/or how the game choices matter if he would been a boss or something like that 🤔
The people who ignore these facts and will ignore this just cause they wanna play the game are no True AC fan and should be ashamed of themselves for having standards so low. I have never seen a company burn itself to the ground due to lack of innovation, reduction of quality and polish and hanging their company on the hopes of entitled virtue signaling and ignoring consumers pleas for improvement.

The fact that fewer French people worked on Unity seems ludicrous to me, considering Ubisoft is a French based company.
I can say to you that the Ubisoft direction in this historical period is held primarily from Ubisoft Quebec, while from AC1 to AC Valhalla Ubisoft Montréal had major power decisions. The main problem is that Ubisoft has 2 types of philosophy about AC:
1) The traditional one is focused on story quality and recreation of smaller, but more quality hand-crafted settings, mainly Ubisoft Montréal, Singapore, Bourdeux
2) The new philosophy that came from Ubisoft Quebec mainly, is the one that privileged fantasy big games, producted for Micro-transation gaining and in this bug world that does not care not only about setting quality, but also about the Foundation of the Original Games.
It's implied that now the people who are in charge of Ubisoft, despite the CEO, are people that came from Ubisoft Quebec, so they are pushing their games and their philosophy
If you see in Unity or in Valhalla a more respectful decision about churches etc it's because those games were made by Ubisoft Montréal
Ubisoft Quebec created AC Syndicate that was more a GTA-game-like, AC Odyssey that is a game offensive for every person who has studied ancient Greece, it's maybe a good recreation of modern Greece, but a very bad recreation of Ancient Greece culture and landscapes.
AC Shadows it's the first main project from Ubisoft Quebec and I suggest you compare their marketing processes of Quebec with AC Shadows with the Ubisoft Bourdeux marketing around AC Mirage, settled in Bagdad in the Islamic Period, another very delicate setting to depict, Ubisoft Bourdeux handled Islamic Culture perfectly, Saudi Arabia companies are actually pushing for a DLC of that game, because they were impressed by it.
The fact that AC Shadows came up in this way instead, is clearly due to Major Decisions from the Higher-ups of Ubisoft and Ubisoft Quebec marketing team and creative direction, and by weak and exclusive hiring process, a Japanese AC game was desired from 2009 at least, the fact they didn't hired enough Japanese people in a Company that has a lot of effective diversity in it, it's very bad and very offensive for Japanese.
Nonetheless, I can say that in my opinion the Devs are doing miracles for trying to correct the Game problems, the Marketing problems etc, they asked the CEO for more time in correcting the game (that's why they delayed the game twice), because they know that their bosses are wrong, the problem is that even they lack of the 360° knowledge of a foreign culture that is so diverse from the Western one, to correct every single thing, this is due to the fact that Ubisoft didn't hired Japanese people.
I know on twitter something artificial must have happened since about 2 weeks ago. Suddenly a bunch of accounts defending and promoting AC:S showed up in my stuff when before there were none. Now have they always been there, and been "boosted" somehow? Can a big company like Ubi pay some sort of super premium plan normal people don't have access to, to push some stuff harder in people's feed?
Very interesting.
I sincerely think that what Ubisoft failed in this game was a lack of communication between them and the players.
Unity was used as an example and that's very convenient because I'm French and I remember quite well that communication about historical authenticity had been discussed. And I think I remember that Ubisoft had communicated quite clearly by saying "no, we took liberties but there are real events, etc." And that's where it's lacking for Shadows because by over-communicating on the fact that "Yasuke, a real historical person, will be the playable character who will be our foreign eyes" that they put a lot of research into "historical authenticity", etc. They lost people on the most important aspect: "fiction".
And turning a deaf ear, because "those who criticize are nothing but racists and haters", it didn't help, especially when lots of little elements were added ("the banner of the arquebusiers has never existed historically and is in fact an association and we didn't ask them for permission? oops", ...)
Thanks for the video ;)
French Canadian here, with Ubi Montréal contacts. I think it's intentional. 1- A black slashing Japanese's 2- A BLACK Samurai, Samurai's being one of the most sacred part of Japan history 3- Broken Torii gate 4- Releasing the game during Tokyo sarin attack anniversary 4- Having a samurai destroy temples of his own religions. Too many event concentrated in the same game. So either partially or fully intentional. But intentional none less. The Woke crowd at Ubi clearly HATES ALL RELIGIONS and HATES JAPAN because Japan refuses the LGBTQ agenda. And devs and project managers did everything they can to display their hatred of religions and anti DEI and anti Woke Japanese to display their frustration and punish them.
In shill video comments the suckups love to go "How dare he speak for all Japanese?!"... yet I see no Japanese comments there. But they're here, and none seem to dispute you.
Some channels also tend to delete dissenting comments, like the dude Shohei reacted to (while also unfortunately getting his fanboys insult the audience)
It is even funnier when just typing アサクリ shows how hated it is by Japanese people
They hired the Japanese history consultant to incorporate DEI elements into the story, while the historical accuracy of the in-game assets is entrusted to the sub-contractors who do the work. Those who are supposed to do the checking only look out for visually striking features that immediately grab attention (eg. 1 legged Tori gate) for marketing purposes. The project failure is on so many levels.
They wish that AC Shadow was made by China. I mean just look at all the bangers that China has release until now
Chinese people can distinguish Chinese and Japanese architecture too
No.
If it was made in china, floy- i mean yasuke wouldnt be in it. So no.
Keep it up. As a western, I'm quite intered in how this IP is being received in the apparent 'native land'.
The soft racism is a hard pill to swallow
no one was offended by church burnings in Valhalla because the vikings regularly targeted churches in real life as they had gold and other valuables
the shrines in japan were not ever destroyed by some random african dude as far as im aware lol
AND there would have been serious consequenses for the person that did so
its a bit obvious really
That bit about not having a Japanese team to me sounded like they were saying "we didn't even have a dedicated team for history and culture in France for the game set in France, and the studios birthplace is in France. So of course we didn't for Japan. "
I don't think the understand, but they probably do now, the popularity of Japanese culture and how badly fans wanted this game for so long, and wanted it done right.
As a Chinese working in games on the language side of things for 13 years and have been a gamer for 30, let me say this:
1. I have NEVER seen, ONE SINGLE, Chinese game that has "Chinese faces" like in AssCreed. If you subcontracted a 3D modeling studio to make these faces they'd probably be baffled as heck. This was 100% a western art team in the vein of all the woke games out there.
2. Trust me, we are as proud of our own cultural elements as much as you Japanese are proud of yours. On top of that, due to simple cultural percolation, Japanese aesthetics are VERY familiar to Chinese artists, and they would not be caught DEAD putting our own cultural elements in a game set in Japan.
I believe you. The characters in 崩壊 and 原神 are so cute,黒神話 are so cool.
Shadows artwork is THE Asian face by a Westerner.
Besides, Naoe is the star of the game. It is unthinkable to let a subcontractor design the face of the protagonist or main characters.
Also, I gess you know as well as the Japanese do that cherry blossoms and watermelons do not belong in the same season.
At least, Chinese creators would known much better than those who are surprised to find Japanese people take off their shoes when they enter a room.
The subcontractor may have made many objects, but those who placed or permitted them should have a heavier responsibility to oversee them.
これが事実であれば、初期のスタッフの発言は誇大広告や詐欺に問われる可能性がありそうですね。
だから、スパムや企業公式がうるさいくらいにファンタジーアピールをしていたんでしょうね。
their exucuse is basically saying that they have no idea about Japanese culture while making a game based off Japanese culture, so they're admitting that they don't know what they're doing.
This is total none-sense because works need to be approved before being put into the final product. So they're also saying that no QA was present?
Yeah, I did mention many times how the faces look more Chinese than Japanese. We have quite a few Japanese in Malaysia, so dont drag the country into this issue. They possibly didn't consult any Japanese when making the assets. Makaysia have some popular UA-camrs like iChang and Aki from Japan.
Their consultants were the guy who fabricated the yasuke story and a woman who wrote a book abou old monk/child "love"
Apart from 2 guys with that chinese beard from another time/dynasty. Everyone else look sooooooo japanese.
They all look like japanese except of 2 guys who has chinese beard.
I get Chinese and Korean vibes from em 🤷♂️
why? because 2 NPCs have chinese beard?
I hope that this situation that your facing sensei shohei san gets straightened out cause you're good at what you do, and you have that heart of gold💛for all the gameplays that you do and putting those long hours into those gameplays. I'm praying that everything works out for you in this situation sensei. Ikanaide. Blessings sensei shohei san, to your family and friends in osaka and blessings to all the people of nihon PO 👏🏆🫶✌️👍⛪️ ✝️ 📿 🤲 🙏🇯🇵.
why the fuck are you calling him sensei?
6:30 Wow, French people weren't consulted on accuracy? Ubisoft is literally a French company. That aside, NA education teaches way more about European history than Japanese history. The knowledge an average White person has of France is much more than what he would have of Japan. Plus, books and research on that period in France written in English are much more readily available than materials written in English about the period in Japanese history. Not very comparable imo. They thought they could just give the project to some Asian people and they can figure it out 😂😂😂
On the topic of Asians making assets for the game, you can tell that besides making assets, there's little to no involvement in other direction of game development. Having bundles of bundles of rice placed randomly around isn't something I bet they'd think was normal either. The stacks of hay randomly littered around the game when Asians have a rice based diet should also be a clear indicator that non-Asians had a hand in this. At least that's coming from my perspective. Would've voiced that oddity out if I was working on that game. So safe to say there were hardly any Asians involved in important decision making whatsoever. Korea and China both have cherry blossoms too and they'd known the difference from watermelon season for example.
Yo it's Vikings dude All they did was pillage and burn crap That's why no one complained That's what was written down in history but no one expects of 8 ft black man to walk in a Japanese shrine and just destroy everything
It's interesting. Thing about it, throughout all the development, they only need to find one guy who truly understands Japanese culture, to take a look at it. Then all these problems will not exist. But the only Japanese historical expert they had, is about boy boy love.
So, this could explain why the Kuroda clan are assigned with the Toyotomi crest in Shadows despite they have their own crest, the Fuji no Hana or Wisteria. If we used Ubi's logic, the Sanada should use the Takeda clan crest since they served the Takeda, however, the Sanada clan has its own crest, the Rokumonsen.
Every game or media that deals with the Sengoku Period are careful about clan crests.
Ubisoft has been dropping the ball since AC Unity, so there's no surprise to me that they absolutely neglected proper research in their upcoming games. They barely fixed bugs, be it missing sfx or glitches, which we saw it in their latest gameplay showcase, so I have no hopes for them to improve any of it at launch. One would think that a big studio like Ubisoft would have the will and resources to do proper research, but they decided not to and that's telling a lot. Thank you for your transparency in all your videos, it's truly appreciated!
They should just declare it historical fiction, just as Godfather III was in a way historical fiction over the part of the sale of the Immobiliare conglomerate and somebody else, Cardinal Lamberto, being elected as John Paul I instead of Albino Luciani like in actual history. But Ubisoft basically prides itself on being "historical" when they aren't. It's like what Netflix did with their portrayal of Queen Cleopatra that got them into major trouble with Egypt: rewriting history to their DEI gusto.
I mean, ac has always been historical fiction. But this lacks the authenticity required to qualify as historical fiction.
This should just be "western parody of eastern culture"
@@xTunafishx Good point.
I’m in a discord group with someone thats working on shadows. We chat about it. He absolutely understands that I’m against their interpretation of Japanese history
Spent 2 yrs there
Gaijin will always be gaijin js 😂
Somebody send this video to Asmongold.
Thank you for covering this! It’s sad to see so many companies not taking their time and doing their research, or even worse, not caring enough to do so.
9:02 yeah, I guess none of the local Japanese would see the one black guy trying to blend in lol
It would appear that your channel was specifically targeted for the video takedown because you could speak English very well and you are knowledgeable in the local traditions and customs. Hence, you could speak with some authority on the matter and the snake oil salesmen did not like it.
so they hired contractors.. could not even do the environments in-house for their own AAA game with that gigantic budget.. shameful truly..
Did you ask them why their PR press release that was written in English and Japanese contained an extra line in the Japanese version that states "your history is not yours"? And did you ask them about Thomas Lockley?
I mention Chinese people working on AC Shadow, because in China there is a long history of Anti-Japanese education, culture and propaganda. Having Chinese people working on AC Shadow was always going to be risky and dangerous, because they could intentionally disrespect Japanese history and culture.
I'm glad you were able to pick up on the way people speak when they use "Japanese Experts" and Japanese people.
I won't lie, an Assassin's Creed game set in Japan was about the only thing that could have got me interested in that farce of a franchise.
But when I found out how little research and care they put into it... at this point Ubisoft would need to pay me to play it, I'm not just not spending money on it, I won't touch it even if it's for free.
Am English and get annoyed every time seeing all that rice stored outside.
now it makes sense , no wonder most of characters and environments almost like china. Got it , Ghost of Tsushima and RGG studio games are the most accurate game representing Japan
The people that did ghosts of tsushima they actually went to the island and did the research they even had Japanese historians and professors involved
@@ladynikkie the best part, they never boasted about it being historically accurate they asked real japanese experts what it used to be and made an amazing game reforetelling of tsushima island during the 1300s with kurosawa style film samurai gameplay
what part of Assassins Creed shadows looks like China??? 🤣does this THING look like Black Myth Wukong?
This is more like the Japan in the eyes of the western people.
I completely agree with you. Tsushima invited an authentic Japanese ancient martial-arts Tenshinryu Hypo masters, to the US and hired them as a motion actor.
Every motion of how to hold a sword and how to walk is Japanese samurai.
The masters and their students, who are really learning swordsmanship in modern Japan, had a great time playing Tsushima.
Shadows' actions appear to be borrowed from the Chinese style of martial arts and the For Honor.
I study aikido, a Japanese martial art, but if I played Shadows, I would not feel Japanese martial arts.
Troll@@PhoenlxA
I'm from Poland. If Ubisoft invited to make (example) AC Wawel, where the main character is called Zygmund and being black too, and the architecture of Cracow and citizens look like and bahave like Russian (Ukrainian, Serbian, Croatian or Czech), 'bacause all they Slavic'... I'll be embarrassed for that and game will be publish ban...
As Socrates said: "Awareness of ignorance is the beginning of wisdom."
Its like a lot of these people are not aware of the fact that other people might not see things the same way they do and don't care as long as things are "correct" for them at Ubisoft.
Ubisoft was basically bullied into making an AC game set in Japan after fans wanting it so much for 10+ years. Maybe the reason they didn't want to commit to the project before was they don't have the expertise to properly tackle the culture, but as things got bad for them they wanted to get a quick buck from those so desperately wanting the game.
It's not "quick" since took 8 years dev. So that theory goes to die.
French Canadian here, with Ubi Montréal contacts. Too many event concentrated in the same game. So either partially or fully intentional. But intentional none less.
brother, you're doing a fantastic job! keep cooking bro! hopefully Ubisoft gets their shit together and listens to us and make the games we'd love to play instead of their weird ass visions for ac games. very long way ahead for actual improvements, if any....
Assassin's Creed Unity WAS heavily criticized by gamers from France due to innacuracies as much as the glitches and troubles with gameplay - and that despite Ubisoft being a French company at it's core. Apparently, Ubisoft did NOT learn from their mistakes and repeated the song and dance with Shadows, heavily limiting the Japanese branch from the development and hiring Malasyan, Korean and Chinese companies - and forgetting, or unaware, that these and other Asian countries still hold grudges against Japan due to WW2 invasions.
This is an excellent video and an honest exchange. Thanks for sharing and hopefully more corrections will be made in the game.
That being said.... I have always been interested in playing this game, already made my order last year and yes, there are actually some gamers who are genuinely interested in game irrespective of the vast JUSTIFIED dislike from the wider gaming community.
Nobody cared about Church burning in Valhalla becase thats historically accurate, thats what the Vikings did. They where a barbarian slaver culture, they just raided villages, stole precious objects in temples or buildings of importance & took slaves.
But here it looks very bad on Yasuke because you are basically playing a black man that is being a barbarian towards Japanese culture as soon as he was given Samurai armor & a weapon. I suspected they were going to change it. But it felt like a humiliation ritual, also how the locals bow to Yasuke just for donning Oda's armor that's weird. It looks like a game preaching black supremacy or something. Not to mention that Yasuke likely only was around Japan for 2 years...
2 years is not enough to learn the language fluently, become a real samurai & have knowledge about how to use all the weapons. Yasuke here is just due to DEI policy very clearly lol. But whatever that has already been made clear a while ago, this is not news. The protagonist should have been Hattori Hanzo or the early design of the buddhist monk swordsman.
Ac never have been about historical accuracy
@Harcimarci1 Yes it fucking has, they always put time and effort into researching facts to put into the Codex. Now it's not historically accurate? Gaslighters.
@@RedArc4Lif3 yeah but there is athe isu line too and valhallas gods
@Harcimarci1 Don't use the Apple or The Ones Who Came before as an excuse for them not being historically accurate. They always tried their best, also we know for a fact that they are trying to turn the franchise into a fantasy series instead of the sci Fi flow they went for.
@@RedArc4Lif3 The only argument Ubi defenders knows😂😂 then later they will say, Ezio kill the pope!!! you can destroy churches!!!, Yasuke is a samurai!!! You can control the characters actions!!! 🤧🤧🤧

I found my way here through Endymion. Thank you for the videos.
i have 0 trust for ubisoft leadership
there either needs to be a serious change (something between pissedoff shareholders and full aquisition by more player focused company) because as it is now i would not care if entire company went bankrupt
Keep going my dude, I'm seeing alot of people against but i believe in what you speak we need more voices like you
Hey for the Quebec part :
We have enough near Ubisoft Montreal: the Japanese Ambassador lives 5 minutes from the studio xD they add the chance there.
この内部関係者は個人的な意見を述べていますが、他のスタジオに対する正当な苦情は無視されたり却下されたりすることが多いのです。これはスタジオがゲームでやったことを正当化するものではありません。完全に不条理。
some people are saying that assassin's creed shadowss didn't say they would be accurate, Even though their tweets said so.
They did. And they walked it back since when they seen thr backlash. Fans want them to stick to something they said previously because they want an excuse to cry. They made a huge misstep and have taken a new creative direction and "gamers" want them to stick to something said long ago. Now the game feels chinese lmfaooo where's the goal post at now? @@ra-neter6662 his short videos are all about other influences giving misinformation about Japan though..... If the game feels chinese now, whose fault is that actually? That's because fans are angry when Yasuke is there because his records and history of him isn't enough to actually make him a legendary samurai and people have found out that Ubi's Yasuke is an inspiration from Thomas Lockley book. your pointer of wanting them to stick to something said long ago also doesn't make sense because everyone is angry over the fact that Ubi decided to make it Historical accurate and still having Yasuke as playable in Shadows. Shohei is only spreading awareness and that's called force? How delusional.
ubisoft is literally destroying the japanese culture with this famous franchise, and I think in response, people should boycott this game and maybe better to break the game discs in the stores!
Shohei, I'm not buying asscreed or supporting ubisoft as a whole. As much as I appreciate the person leaking the information, it doesn't matter to me. I will support you and others who are straightforward and honest. You speak with your heart. You have every reason to feel disrespected and insulted. Ubisoft is trying to teach you about your culture when ubisoft could care less about Japan. They just want to appropriate Japanese culture to make money.
It seems like I wasn't the only one who felt this. I felt like they looked more Chinese than Japanese for sure; even the characters looked Chinese.
19:00 nah nah nah nah nah. Their experts are not even legit experts
Wait so the game is made by people who have a bone to pick with Japan? Imagine my shock!
Ubisoft really needs a change of management and a radical change of work culture. That is the only way I see them righting the ship.
I never thought Ubisoft had anything to do with your video being taken down. It felt very much like an attack by another UA-camr. My guess is they got a bunch of their subscribers to all report the video. Enough reports would trigger an auto takedown.
Ubisoft probably spent over 200 million US dollars making this game. They may have spent over a million on cultural experts and cultural sensitivity consulting companies. Unfortunetly they obviously didn’t spend a dime on checking if the experts and companies they employed had any knowledge in the field they were being consulted about.
I hope they will learn never to use consultant companies again for something so important and do due diligence when selecting experts in the future. That’s if Ubisoft have a future after this car crash of a game comes out.
We’ll see if they have fixed the games many problems and whether there is unnecessary pandering to progressive politics when it comes out. Either way I’m avoiding this game until I see trusted creators play and review the game.
AC Shadow content is better than the game itself
And i think that this video will have more peoples watch than AC Shadow copies sold :))
(1) About where the game was made - Imagine a game set in the US made with assets subcontracted to developers in Russia, Pakistan, and Mexico, led by a company in Brazil, involving few to no Americans, and then having it promoted as an authentic American experience. (To those from any of the countries listed, no offence meant, and it's not a rip at your country's ability to develop games - I'm simply trying to illustrate how strange AC Shadows and the background behind its creation is.)
(2) On the "three kill" rule - Was the "three kill rule" added because they intended to, or a reluctant implementation in response to the backlash the game has received? Considering Ubisoft's major blunders in its promotion of AC Shadows and its lack of adequate communication in/for the preview gameplay, the impression I get is that it is more likely the latter.
(3) Regarding the mirror of the shrine being destructible in the game - No matter a person's thoughts on religion, it's undeniable that religion is a strong cultural factor in many countries (if not even today, at least historically). It's possible to conclude that they allowed the destruction of the shrine's religious items in AC Shadows due to ignorance (though that would still be a rather cavalier attitude towards Japanese culture since it shows a lack of proper research efforts), but if they keep its destruction enabled, then there's not really much other explanation than intentional disrespect.
(4) Other general thoughts - No matter how you slice the situation, and even if someone were to present Ubisoft's repeated blunders in the best light, it's undeniable that Ubisoft (when it comes to AC Shadows, at least) is finding it difficult to exercise cultural respect.
if Ubisoft devs are truly watching this video, then please as a Canadian, please listen to what I am about to say and you may not like it, this is my opinion Assassin's Creed: Shadows needs to be delay indefinitely, don't give a new release date, the game needs to be rebuilt from the ground up, because as much as there are people in Ubisoft Quebec that confident, this game will be ready for launch day, there are way too many things going against it succeeding, from the over-saturated content that I can guarantee you if it didn't work for Odyssey and Valhalla, it will not work for Shadow, to the fact that the story is going to be the major problem for this game to succeed, your writers may think this will not be like Veilguard, or Concord, or Suicide Squad, but the three game I named and many more that failed in the last 2 years, they all shared the same problem, there story and writing are terrible, releasing this game in it's current state and with the criticism it is receiving, you might as well execute this game right here and now, there are no win win scenario for AC Shadows, Ubisoft will suffer financially however if they can focus on smaller project for the time being, no nft, no monetization cash grab BS, just focus on what made players happy, 2 to 3 years from now with a revise AC: Shadows, players will forget what it was before
that is the best case scenario I can think of, but of course this is just my opinion
Thank you for the insides Shohei. As much as I dislike UBI and hope that the company goes down, I'm sorry for all developers and people who're working hard to live a good life. I hope they find good jobs and develop great games in the future in companies that value them. I can't believe how frustrating it must be do develop a game that you don't like yourself, just because the higher ups are money-greedy as*holes.
