  • Hey, guys. I'm really happy to finally be back with you. I've had a lot going on the past year, but we are back and I will be posting more consistently again. Today we are kicking things off with a review of the Microsoft Surface Pro 9. Last year I actually had entire Surface Pro 8 review filmed for you guys that I never got the chance to finish or get up. In that review I had a lot of things I wanted to talk to you guys about, I didn't end up keeping the machine, but I wanted to make up for it with a review of the Surface Pro 9. We will of course be reviewing the Surface Pro 9 from the standpoint of the creative professional. We will be going over the hardware of the Surface Pro 9, we will be talking about software, and of course we will be talking about performance with Intels 12th generation chipset. We will talk about the accessories like Microsofts Signature Surface Type Cover, and Microsofts Surface Slim Pen 2. We go in depth on the Slim Pen 2, which was something I wanted to show you guys in the Surface Pro 8 review that I didn't get to get up. The Surface Slim Pen 2 brings a totally different pen input experience to the Surface Pro and it has evolved to be something really great. So let's not waste any more time. This is the Surface Pro 9 Artist review.

    Hey, guys. VERY IMPORTANT! There must have been a bug in geek-bench when I was running the GPU scores. It seems that they weren’t accurate. The GPU scores that I’m seeing online when searching their index are showing over 13,000 on the GPU, which is much better than the results I got. I tested the benchmark multiple times, at least 6 times on different days at max power plugged in and the result kept coming back as what was shown in the video. I would have had a very different view of the GPU in the video if the proper results were shown. I also think this happened to me last year on the Pro 8 tests, but it’s hard to remember.
    Interestingly the geek bench browser is showing that the Pro 8 i5 reaches over 15K, so I’m not sure why the scores are still behind even the Pro 8. But at 13K-14K and the i7 hitting 17k+ I can say the intel Iris XE has made great strides. Hope you guys catch this comment, I’m really bummed that the scores didn’t come in properly. I also didn’t realize the Pro 8 i5 had a fan either because it ran extra silent, and assumed it had no fan being that previous gens had no fan.

      @@FrankFurther I searched the geekbench index and saw higher results and those results get automatically upload to their site from other users tests so I’m pretty sure there was a bug going on, I tested it again after I found out and they showed the higher results. Not sure what was going on with it.

    The biggest advantage of Surface Pro 9 over iPad Pro is that Surface Pro 9 runs full Windows 11 system, so all apps, programs and even games (of course those more light, we won't play Cyberpunk 2077 on this - unless via cloud gaming) can be run on it. If someone is in Apple ecosystem then should go for iPad, coz it's all connected there. But if someone is just looking for 2 in 1 laptop for work, consuming media, movies etc. and doesn't want to create full ecosystem (where you have to spend money on other devices) then Surface Pro 9 is a better choice

    I have the i7 version and my Geekbench scores are: Single Core: 1680, Multi core: 8094, Open CL: 17766. All at max power option and unplugged. The i5 should not be that much slower.

      Wow really? When I ran the marks, and I ran them multiple times, I mean I ran it at least 6 times on different days plugged in and unplugged of course at max power to make sure, and the scores shown in the video are what I kept getting, and I assumed the GPU hadn’t improved based on that score. I wonder if that was a geekbench bug. I would really like to know now because that would totally change what I said in the video. If I saw a score anywhere near what you are getting I would have talked about how much better it was.

    Hi Cladio, Great Review, I have a question, I am game ui ux designer plus sometimes I use aftereffects for some small rendering, not much heavy editing, so surface pro 9 i5 is fine for that, mostly I work on Photoshop and figma. Just looking for budget machine thats why asking about i5 only.
    Thanks

    • @CladioJulianoArt
      @CladioJulianoArt  29 днів тому

      Thanks my friend. Well when it comes to after effects it is a software that runs better with a dedicated GPU all around, but for small stuff you may be able to get by. For your other work in PS & FIgma you’d be fine. If you have the budget you might want to check out the new Surface Pro Co Pilot + machines for they are going to be very good systems with great power and long battery life.

      Thanks for tuning in! The dial is great if you work in Clip Studio, it’s the only thing that supports it in the way I want to use it like how I was in the video. I would say not worth it if you work outside of clip. I use it all the time for working in Clip though. The Slim Pen 2 I found to be great and it’s newer tip design allows for much more natural tilt, and I found it to be better all around than the previous generation.

    Hi! Great review!
    Which version is this? Is it 8GB of RAM or 16GB of RAM? I'd like to do occasional simple Premiere Pro edits, and maybe some very light After Effects here and there on the go, while still having a solid device at home with RTX GPU and 8-core processor. Would you say the 8GB version is enough? Besides that, I'll just use it for note taking, annotating pdf documents and basic office work.

    You talked about the "balanced mode" that initiates once you unplug the Surface Pro as if it's enforced on users, which is not true and misleading to be honest. You can always control this in the settings to keep the "best performance" mode working even if unplugged.
    This of course will have a negative impact on the battery life but will achieve the goal of keeping the performance consistent.

    • @CladioJulianoArt
      @CladioJulianoArt  7 місяців тому

      Nowhere does it let the user know that it’s doing that, tech people know, but most users don’t. I’ve covered the Surface since first generation and I have gotten loads of messages from people who had no clue there were different modes, but that’s not the moral of what I was saying. The point of saying that was that the intel chips in this machine do not do well when it comes to battery life and efficiency. If you unplug and are traveling you need battery life, balanced or low power mode is the only way to get some ok battery life (but still nothing long or good) In this video I mention clearly that you can go into performance mode on the battery but that’s going to kill the battery within 2 hours. Also, even when in high performance mode on the battery it still doesn’t perform the same as when it’s plugged in. The machine still AUTO puts the user in balanced mode on the battery for a reason.

    Very good review! A question: Is Intel Iris X graphics sufficient for Photoshop CC? Somewhere on the Adobe website there is a warning/recommendation as to GPU minimum requirements for PS CC, and I believe Intel Iris X stays below those, which means some functionality (like 3D) in PS CC will be unavailable, and overall PS CC may not run as smoothly. On the other side, there are a number of review videos where PS CC is used on devices with Intel Iris X graphics, and I´ve never heard a reviewer say anything negative about hang ups because of it in PS CC.
    Currently, there are good deals for the MS Surface Pro 8. Given the choice, I´d probably go for more RAM (like the top specced 32gb/1tb) and 11th gen Intel CPU instead of 12th gen Intel CPU with less RAM. For Photoshop, 11th vs 12th gen Intel CPU won´t make any noticeable difference I believe.
    BTW: Backwards compatibility is amazing. PS and AI CS6 runs without problems under Windows 11, which is good for anyone refusing to get sucked into Creative Cloud. The only thing is that a particular Wintab driver needs to be installed to enable pen pressure sensitivity on MS Surface Pro 8/9 in PS CS6.

    • @CladioJulianoArt
      @CladioJulianoArt  Рік тому

      Hey, my friend. Yea I would say for the most part it is. Photoshop still does best/preforms fastest with higher power GPU’s, but you’ll be fine with the on board graphics, especially if you go with the higher spec models. Also important to note my GPU scores in the video were not correct there was a bug in geek-bench, don’t know if you caught the pinned comment. The actual scores are much higher at 13-14K and 17K plus on the i7 model. So you should be fine.

      Adobes software only works with Intel chips on Windows and in this review it’s the intel version. You won’t be able to get it to run on a Surface with arm chips for it’s incompatible. If you are in a return period I would return asap and get the intel version. The intel i5 is featured in this video.

This model when the fans kick on it’s pretty noticeable ( I mean when pushing things a bit) Unit could have been defected, because I def heard a lot of noises and looked them up and saw others on Reddit reporting similar stuff. But the older gens that had no fan were truly dead silent and they still did a surprisingly good job at handling heat.

    Finally a review that goes into detail like I wanted!
    I found a new surface pro 9 (i5 8gb 256gb) + keyboard and pen for 1k USD, considering selling my Tab S8 then buying it. (I mainly notetake and study, watch movies, light gaming, edit photos, write)
    It's amazing for notetaking for University, that's what I mainly use it for alongside entertainment, but the fact it runs the android version of Office apps and doesn't run windows apps I occassionally use like Photoshop is a bummer (I have to wait till I get home to use my PC) + I could play 2D light games on the go. As for writing, I got a third party S8 type cover and it's pretty bad and the weight of the tablet makes it fall back easily + connecting it with Bluetooth is inconvenient
    The battery life sounds worrying though, especially considering it might deteriorate over time.
    What do you think?

    • @CladioJulianoArt
      @CladioJulianoArt  3 місяці тому

      Well, you know Surface can certainly do all the things you need it to for your use cases. The biggest downfall of the Surface Pro is battery life. With light work you can probably pull 7 hours, but once you get into things like Photoshop and browsing and even light gaming it will be more like a 3-5hr machine.
      You’ll definitely have to travel with a charger. I don’t know if you are open to using anything or if you prefer a specific platform but the iPad Pro could be a great choice for you if you were open to working in other software for photo editing. With full pro software like Affinity Photo, ArtStudio Pro, Clip Studio (all full cross platform pro grade software) give a really excellent experience with iPad Pro- especially with the M series chips. It’s also great for note taking. For docs I use iWork on iPad Pro and they work great and are very full featured. The Magic Keyboard is a great typing experience with a fluid trackpad.
      You’d also get plenty of battery life. Something to consider if you are open to the Apple side. If not the Tab S8/S9 would be my choice simply because they are going to have far superior battery life over Surface.

      @@CladioJulianoArtI've been using windows and android all my life, switching from the Office apps and Adobe apps I'm used to, to Ipad os and its apps, would be hard.
      I already have the S8 but it has a worse (3rd party) keyboard (because the s8 doesn't have an official keyboard avaliable in my area) than the surface, no light gaming, no photoshop light editing on the go, etc
      After more thinking, I realized I'd be using the surface in a University which is full of charging ports and study rooms with them everywhere, so charging it on the go won't be a problem. I think I could handle it (unless it only lasts 2-3 hours like some people I've seen online have said)

There isn’t much you can really crack with a Surface, on top of that it’s def not a gaming machine and for any modern triple A titles. You won’t get the best experience w/integrated graphics for gaming. Also considering the size of modern games and how expensive the storage options are for Surface prob not ideal for that.

      Samsung notes sucks on Galaxy book compared with Galaxy Tab, I used both a lot.
      Also inking performance is always inconsistent on 2 in 1 devices compared with Tablets. Its a lottery. My galaxy book pen performs poorly close to the bottom of the screen. Seen this with other 2 in 1 devices. Magnets in the laptop or near the laptop affect it.
      Surface uses different technology and the pen works the same in all apps. Palm rejection also way better than most Windows devices.

    Too small & noisy with weak GPU... If only apple did a full blown OS version @16" - M2 like device I would be in heaven! I'm kind of leaning towards the S8 ultra until anything catches up to a larger sized tablet as my old 1st gen 13" iPad Pro is a little small for drawing also.

      I definitely don’t see Apple ever having MacOS run on iPad. Would I reject it if it happened? No, but I’m of the opinion that when a product tries to do everything it always winds up with compromise which is the case w/Surface. Regardless of M series chips, other compromise would emerge. I draw on the 11” and love it.

    why would you hear the fans on a ipad pro with an "ipad" operating system?? Thats like hearing fans on an iphone, the surface pro is a laptop basically. you get the best of both worlds with the surface. The ipad is just on oversized iphone lol

      @CladioJulianoArt  Рік тому

      First off that’s not true, but also not what I said. I was talking about it compared to the M1/M2 MacBook Pro which have fans but run totally silent along with the system staying totally cold to the touch even when pushed, and the iPad which has the same chip runs silent and cold with no fan at all. Lol in 2023 are you really trying to say the iPad is a big iPhone!? That’s just straight up not true. Especially for creators. All good if you don’t like Apples stuff- I use everything so it doesn’t matter to me, but the iPad Pro is not just a useless oversized iPhone, as a creator and hardcore tech person that uses Windows, Android, MacOS, Linux etc I would never use it if that was the case.

      @@CladioJulianoArt I thought you were comparing the iPad to the surface.. I have used all operating systems as well as a professional graphic designer. @@Brain_Byte I respect your opinion. I help develop software for iPadOS with Artstudio Pro which is a go to for many digital artists/painters, and the platform offers many other professional pieces of software for art/design that are fully cross platform like the Affinity suite, Clip Studio, and more for video, audio, etc. It’s that combined w/the pencil for why I use the iPad. However I am also a large scale print shop owner of 15 years and the operation is heavily tied into desktop/windows and the creative cloud suite. iPad for me is about getting to do a good chunk of my work on it with its great power, long battery life, and extra portable form. But like I said in the video have used Surface from first generation.

    • @CladioJulianoArt

      Different philosophy but the reality is iPadOS is MacOS. It’s the same core and kernel it’s just setup differently. I don’t think we would ever see iPad run macOS, I also don’t think it makes much sense. Surface comes with many trade offs in power/performance and battery life because of what it try’s to do. I think the iPad and Mac are better products as they are without trying to be everything in one product. It’s why they are so good at what they do.

      It’s a silly conclusion that lacks any and all truth. You are probably just someone who randomly hates Apple for whatever weirdo reason. Luckily for me it doesn’t matter because I use a little of everything. The measly iPad Pro is used by millions of artists and creators who are using pro cross platform software or other pro software made for iPadOS like Artstudio Pro, Clip Studio Paint, Affinity Designer, Photo and publisher, Logic Pro, Luma Fusion and many others. This argument literally makes no sense at all and we can go on all day about it and I’ll still win the argument. The iPad Pro is a creators tool especially for artists who are working by hand, musician’s and video creators. However, if you actually watched the video It was compared to both an M1 MacBook Pro and M1 iPad Pro which both machines run many of the same cross platform software. Also if you watched the video you’d see all the other side of the spectrum arguments I make for surface. If you did any research you would know this.
