Thanks very much for this video. I had the leak, just a few drops on the ground about a year ago. At the time the dealership just replaced the seal. Then, in the cold snap we had this past December I found the red puddle underneath. This time they did the stub shaft/axle replacement per the TSB under extended warranty. Your video shows exactly what was involved and what they did. Thanks again!

The standard of auto (and Ford) repair video formats. Reviewing several other videos on this subject shows that you do indeed set the standard. Excellent lighting, camera shots, volume, background mechanical tips, etc. Honestly, I'd love to see someone put out these quality videos for other makes.

Thanks for a great "how to" video! For some ridiculous reason, the Ford factory shop manuals and the Haynes manual both have you removing the two lower control arms which is very difficult and a real PITA. Your method of removing the upper control arm ball joint made it really easy. I've subscribed to your channel and I'm sure I will be utilizing you expertise many more times.

Ok I just did this job in my driveway. Great video, was extremely helpful. Bought the slide hammer tool from harbor freight. Looked like it was going to work great, not so much. Ended up cutting the bushing with a dremel then prying to bend and remove. Bought the bearing driver tool from harbor freight, worked great.
I got lucky. My fusion had 120k miles, looked like the axles could be salvaged.
    Again, great video!

I'd probably recommend to friends to NOT attempt this at home. I did this on my 2010 Milan 2.5 and found it to be problematic. The dealer would not lend me any of the tools and parts stores did not have a bushing puller large enough. I ended up using a pilot bearing puller on a slide hammer instead, I wouldn't recommend this as it can scratch up the case and it constantly slips off the bushing. The axle also fought me going out and in; in fact, on the new axle I ended up having to file down the C clip in order to get it to go in. Here's all the tools you can rent from normal parts store if you want to attempt it:
    Slide hammer
    Pilot bearing slide hammer attachment
    Bearing and race driver set
Front hub/axle puller (makes it easier to not have to hammer the CV axle)
    CV axle pry bars
    36mm axle nut impact socket
    Excellent video, good info

Pretty sure I nicked the bore a bit when I pulled out the bushing. I smoothed it out a bit with some sandpaper and cleaned it really good. Applied some extra locktite, hopefully it’s ok. It seems pretty snug so I think it will be fine.
Thanks for the video. This really helped me. My bushing was in there really tight but the puller kit I got from Amazon did ok. I wish I had a longer slide hammer as it’s really cramped even with the shock removed.

I haven't noticed any leak but my CV half shaft is clicking like crazy so I ordered up a new one. Was going to let a local shop throw it in for me tomorrow afternoon but now I have learned of this bushing/seal issue and I'm hesitant to not replace all 3 parts at 1 time. I see where you told Steve you could do it for $200 so I'm wondering where you're located. My wife uses this car for work now and I want it done right. I'm not sure this local shop has all the tools required to do it correctly and affordably.

Your video has been an AMAZING help trying to tackle this. After an inspection, the tech states I have trans fluid coming from BOTH Front L and R and reccom replacing gasket on each side. I now know this video is what should be done for left side. But I see you say no kits made for rigth side and I can't find these part#'s listed even on ford's parts site. Does right side have the seal and bushing like left side? What would you do to stop leak on the right side? Thank you SO MUCH.

Hey Makuloco, I have a pretty specific questions for you, I inspected and noticed a little bit a play with the shaft itself on the driver side while changing my winter tires, would this be the cause of the little "clunks" I started hearing lately while rolling over bumpy/potholed roads? Do I need to replace the axle like real soon to not cause more damage or is this pretty usual? At first I suspected the strut but it seemed fine and dry.
Would it be a good idea to change both axle and strut to save on labor? Thanks for your input and time bud, much appreciated. This is RockAbout.. from the fusion forums btw.

    • @davidhine2991

Where can I get the install tool? I seem to be having some incredible difficulty locating a store that I can purchase it from.

Had one a few weeks ago on an escape. Sadly customer noticed leak 4 months prior and just kept driving until trans was slipping. By the time it got to me fluid was pouring out as fast you could pour it in. It actually wore through the bushing and damaged the trans case. You could move the axle shaft up and down a good 1/4 inch. All just because the customer was too lazy to bring it in earlier.

Oh wow that is lazy and now very expensive. This one was a fleet car and the Fusions have that shield underneath so I understand they didn't see a bunch of drips on the ground. This one actually came in for a check engine light on the evap system as the only complaint.

FordTechMakuloco... Thank You for the great videos!! I have a 2013 Fusion Se with a 1.6GTDI l4 and I can’t find an axle shaft kit on amazon. Can you please link the correct axle shaft and seals for this year and model?
I only see for 3.0 and 2.5 engine models and amazon says it can’t find a compatible part for my car.
    Thanks

Still haven’t tackled this yet as the local ford dealer told me I have to drop the transmission and split the case on the 2013 fusion Se to get a new bushing in. Is there a way to get the bushing out the way you show in this video?
