Since I tend to wear out the bottoms of my socks, I decided years ago to knit heel less socks. None of my socks have worn out because of the ability to wear them all around. After spending money, spending time, I have been so happy with the results.
I think that's going to be a good point in their favor for me too as some of my other socks have worn out along the heel. I want to try some other stitch patterns too!
I'm new in knitting socks, found Kate Selene's free pattern for spiral socks plus the vintage spiral socks free pattern, also watched some other videos of the spiral socks (the history of it was interesting). I love knitting the spiral socks because I'm using my worsted yarn stash and wearing these socks keeps my feet warm. Your videos are great to watch, lots of helpful information.
@@NerdyKnitting If you decide to do one with the lace spiral sock, I would love to hear what you say about the results. The lace spiral socks looks hard to knit, but looks really pretty.
So glad you posted this. I'm a newbie knitter and love socks but, I don't get the fascination of knitting them, seems too complicated. This was a thought of mine, why not tube socks. Thanks, appreciate your effort to bring us choices. Bless y'all! 😺🌸
Thank you for this! I first saw a spiral sock on Arne & Carlos’s podcast and it piqued my interest but I hadn’t really explored it much. I can’t wait to try out your pattern and toe now! ❤
I have been debating on trying this pattern. I want to make socks for my niece and my friends daughter but don’t know what size they are. And I don’t live close enough for them to try on. I think these would be perfect.
I love tube socks, . They fit everyone. Have never done a spiral sock, looks very interesting. Neither have I tried a round toe, looks perfect for this sock but instead of pulling the last couple stitches into a tight circle, I will finish with a Kitchener stitch.thank you for this pattern
Thank you for your video and thoughts on these types of sock patterns! I knit donations for the Broadway Youth Center in Chicago and usually it's warm hats and scarfs, but they've just reported back that 75% of their request items by recipients are for wool socks, which left me stymied. How you knit such a customized item for donation? Started researching wartime knitting and found these patterns and what i hope is a solution. Since everyone comments they wear like iron since you don't have a heel to wear through, even better. Your thoughts on the toe are extremely helpful. I hadn't really thought about it and it's extremely helpful and a good solution to what was bothering me about the toe. I was thinking of a Turkish cast on as well for the same reason for toe up, starting with the same amount you would sew up in the decrease method. What do you think? Start with four or so stitches and increase as you would decrease? It would be easier to use the full amount of yarn rather then trying to guesstimate the amount for a decrease toe and hoping i had enough left. I hate yarn chicken. Thank you again!
What a great donation gift - I think these would work well! As far as your questions - there's no reason to NOT start them toe-up just like you described (and definitely a great way to use up every bit of yarn).
I’ve been investigating these spiral socks as toe-up, too, and found a helpful video from Roxanne Richardson for a rounded toe-up toe using similarly spaces increases and cast on using Judy’s Magic Cast-On. It paired fantastically with this one for a toe-up version. I prefer toe-up because I equally hate yarn chicken and leftovers.
I simply knit stockinette stitch for a smooth feeling as my feet are sensitive to different textures such as k2p2 ribbing. I like a higher sock so a finished sock measures 19" from top to toe based on 64 stitches and fits a women's size 9. It's a very simple project. Perfect for mindless knitting during a dull meeting...don't we all need to keep our hands busy in order to stay awake and concentrate on meeting content! 😴
Good point! I was forgetting my soles are sensitive to patterns. That has me thinking I can still knit a pattern on the calf, and stockinette stitch the ankle down. 🥰
I need help!!! Is there a way to do an easy appropriate toe on this sock with 9" circulars? I'm mostly new to knitting and extremely new to sock knitting so I know nothing about toes 🤷♀️ I can't read a pattern to save my life so I really need a video you follow. Thanks in advance 👍🌸🌹
I cast one on immediately after the first mention in the previous video….. I’m taking part in sock madness so they’re on a hiatus atm but I did toe up and am now realising I made the error of doing a traditional wedge toe. My bad, next pair I’ll think ahead, but I’ll glad for the prompt to reverse the spiral - that’ll make them look more cohesive as a gift pair 😊
I really wish I could find a VERY simple no heel sock with an explanation on how to determine the number of stitches for size, as I only wear a size 6 shoe and socks I purchase are always too long for my foot. Unfortunately this triple needle method is way too advanced for me, even though I might manage the pattern otherwise if both socks were done exactly the same way. Could something like this be done in a regular cable pattern?
Cables would be difficult for socks because they don't have very much stretch and you need a sock to stretch around the foot. As far as choosing the number of stitches, it depends on the gauge of the pattern and the circumference of the foot.
Omg I have tried to make a sock for months on end and always having to pull it out and I cried every time thankyou so much for this pattern.i have a question about the top of the socks how long did you make the cuff.im going to try it today I cast on 64 stiches.thankyou again be blessed.
My feet and calves are about your size I think. I want to use my stylecraft special dk yarn, it’s lighter weight for dk yarn - 22 st and 30 rows per 4”. How would I work out how many stitches I need? I’ve never made socks that fit, I always WAY overestimate stitches and give up.
Socks benefit from about an inch of negative ease in general. So measure around the ball of your foot, subtract one inch, and multiply by your one-inch stitch gauge for a rough estimate of the stitch count to use. Round up or down depending on any stitch patterns you plan to use.
Good afternoon my friend I have a question ⁉️ can you please tell me how to make a shorties sock with this pattern for a size 7 8 women foot I would love to make them for a gift.thankyou so much have a great afternoon.
Aren't the socks supposed to match at the tops? I just wanted to be sure to make the socks, I forget ones on project and find they don't match im wondering if I accidentally knit the wrong rows. It's this one different on the second sock to make the spiral a different direction?
@@NerdyKnitting oh cool, that makes sense :0) thanks you. I'll try this. Is this the same for say a size 4 or 5 women's sock? What size needle could you recommend? I'll be planning on making my husband some socks soon. Again thank you.
Shoe size isn't a great indicator for sock fit - you need to know the foot circumference and cast on enough stitches for that (with a little bit of negative ease) and then the length is totally customizable. And I'd start with a 1.25 mm needle but again, it depends on your gauge (between 8-9 stitches to the inch is good for socks).
@@NerdyKnitting oh great that makes sense. I wasn't sure to measure my foot or the heel to get that, since there's no heel it should help with fitting better

Great idea!
The socks look great! I'm wondering if you can post the pattern - what size needles, how many cast on, etc. Thank you

Ty for the video, does this pattern bother the sole of the foot?
I wondered about that too but haven't had an issue with them (but I haven't worn them for a full day yet).

You'll have to switch to double pointed needles or magic loop for the toe - there just aren't enough stitches to use 9" circulars.

It's kind of addicting knitting socks without heels!
Thanks for getting back to me I really don't know what it would be and do you know how I can find out with out letting them know it for a gift
There are plenty of sock size charts online. Those should help you figure this out.
New here! For differences in weight of sock do you lower the rows for the toe -the heavier the yarn I would do less toe rows? ☺️🙏
Exactly!
TUBE SOCKS, IN THE 70s and 80s had no heel and fit everyone. They were not ribbed but stockinette 😎

Hey there! I forgot to knit cuff down and started at the toe ,,will this work the opposite way up 😅
Yes, that would be absolutely fine!
how many stitches did you cast on for toe up? looking to try this as well as I'm not a big fan of cuff down
Hi, can I easily use 9”circular for this pattern?
Yes, absolutely!
Also, can I achieve the spiral with 32 stitches around ☺️
Yes - any multiple that works for the rib pattern that you're using will be just fine.
What size knitting needle did you use ? What gauge ?
I used a 2.25 mm and knit about 8-9 sts to the inch.
Does it bunch up on top in your shoes or boots?
I haven't tried wearing these anywhere but at home so I'm not sure if they would bunch up or not.
Oh I think I got it you just repeating the pattern till you get it as long as you want and then do the toe right
Yes, exactly! Just remember to shift the stitch pattern by one stitch every 6 rounds or so - so it will spiral around.
Thankyou so much I'm on my way to make this sock but tell me again how many rows you did before the toe.i did a 1and a half inch cuff
I don't remember how many rounds I did for the sock - I just kept going until I thought it was long enough.
Ok I'm doing mine in a50gm ball of sock yarn just wanted to know how many rounds I should do before running out.thankyou so much for helping me and getting back to me please be safe and blessed.
50 grams might be enough for shortie/ankle socks (depending on the length/size of your foot).
