I was told, when I was in Japan that traditionally, a white dress was not used for weddings. It was more a death color. Supposedly, white dresses are relatively recent (Dependent on the definition of recent).
White wedding dresses are a recent custom in Western cultures too. Queen Victoria of England started the trend when she married Prince Albert in 1840, and even then, it wasn't until the later years of that century that this became more common among more average people when new clothing became more affordable. Before then, women mostly just wore whatever best dress they already had regardless of color (as long as it wasn't black) over the previous millennia. I'm not sure if this could be related to Japan's current wedding dress customs.

I don't know how accurate it is, but a book that really helped me understand Feudal Japan is Shogun bu James Clavell. I know it's historical fiction, but it helped me to see how different they were (culturally), and how strange we would have been to them.
