We instantly began to climb to deconflict, and as we are rising up we can see this huge airliner approaching and heading directly below us. Just about the time our paths crossed, the jet rocked into a banked turn to head for the outer marker for CLE. My IP calmly watched it approach and bank, leaned way over in front of me in the pilots seat, and very wistfully said : "If we had guns on this thing, we could have had him.... ".

I'm still learning things like the tower Light Gun yesterday. I comment less now.
      Trick I found is to not be afraid to let others realise how stupid I am.
      This raises another point for another time about a small few line pilots get annoyed that people not in the industry make comments* at all, and that many just repeat "Oh how awful" and "R.I.P." comments; but that's for anothr day.
      On the plus side I'm always amazed what amazingly experienced people take the time to comment here and the two sim recreation channels I watch; many with direct experience or knowledge of that or similar incident.

I think for aircraft it must be much more complicated. Kinda like Morse code but in color. If I were a pilot flying at controlled airports I would study this in depth.

      I'm pretty sure military aircrafts can receive and transmit on civilian frequencies, otherwise how are they going to warn you before they shoot you down for violating restricted airspace? Also, almost all aircraft nowadays have multiple radios, so that you can transmit/receive on one frequency while monitor another. The civilian aircrafts, on the other hand, cannot hear anything transmitted on the military frequencies, because their radios are designed to operate outside the military frequency range.

    • @michaelh.9686
      @michaelh.9686 11 місяців тому +22

      @@wildgoose419 mostly correct, the F-35s have multiple radios and have the capability to receive on VHF, but typically the VHF radio is used for inter-flight communication between the 6 of them. And while a lot of civilian aircraft don’t have UHF radio, you can buy one if you wanted to! But they wouldn’t have been monitoring ATC frequency on both radios, just UHF, with the VHF radio in between flight members

    • @michaelh.9686
      @michaelh.9686 11 місяців тому +37

      And for anyone confused, VHF is Very-high frequency and UHF is Ultra-high frequency. Just different frequency ranges the radio transmits/receives on. Typically UHF radios are only used by military aircraft, most civilians use VHF. The controlling agency “simulcasts” on both frequencies when they make radio calls, hence why we can hear them give instruction to the civilians and to TABOR flight, even though we are just hearing the VHF comm. TABOR would not be monitoring the same channel on both VHF and UHF because it’s very distracting hearing a transmission twice, and because they use their VHF radio for Inter-flight communications between the 6 of them. I’m sure if they did hear, they would have thrown out a little pun as a response.

      My very first flight as a private pilot, i took my wife to Lake Havasu for lunch. Coming in we had a pair of f-18s doing approaches, and were on CTAF. Was pretty fun to be in the pattern, on my base leg and have the two of them come right across my nose. And then after I landed and on my roll out, they did a low runway approach right above me. We were all cracking jokes on frequency and they were awesome about calling out where they were and what they were doing. One was call sign potato and the other one was call signed potato. (PoTAYto & PoTAto)
      My wife was like "that was awesome!" And I told her I called ahead and planned that just for her 😂

    -- I pulled some shenanigans like that once with a B-2 Spirit at about 12 thousand. Was flying a Mustang with my daughter, and to keep it in limens terms, descended through a cloud bank, and here's this massive, unmistakable bomber, except this one is brown, not black, flying low and slow. We're bleeding off some speed coming in about an 1/8th of a mile behind off his right wing and gaining.
    I confess myself a little pissed off that ATC or the Pilots didn't make it's/presence known. Both knew I was there. So I called it out to ATC as a bogey, identifed it as a Vulcan spacecraft and announce my intentions to 'go to guns'.
    I know the guys up in ATC, so they laugh and redirected me. I'm wondering why it's so low, slow; if there's a problem with the aircraft, and thinking 'shouldn't this thing have an escort' when two fighters blaze across my nose from left to right. Shook the whole damn Mustang, and were so fast I couldn't identify them. That'll pucker your ass, so traffic was a little less formal.
    Can't remember what I said, but it was in the blind. I called out my heading and sputtered something like, 'hey, you guys knew I was here, could have let me know.'
    Never said a word to me. My daughter however 4 at the time is yelling at them, parroting what I'd said to her that, that was close, we could have had a collision.
    Last thing I 'think' I hear is one of the pilots in one of the aircrafts chuckling.

    • @propellhatt
      @propellhatt 10 місяців тому +6

      They were obviously envious, the mustang is one of the most beautiful airframes to ever grace the skies and with one of the most glorious engine sounds of history (a tie with the spitfire and Lancaster (which eeks it out on account of having 4 of the Merlins). Modern fighter jets are too utilitarian and except the f16 and f14 I find them kinda bland. I'm envious of your daughter, you might very well be the coolest dad around

    • @MarkJacksonGaming
      @MarkJacksonGaming 10 місяців тому +2

      -- I'd go that far, a tie, though my personal preference does go to the Mustang. There's more room in the cockpit for the pilot, a noticeable amount, and I don't like swapping hands stick and gear, depending on the Spitfire variant, those two and flaps right at takeoff. The Lancaster is something else with those Merlin's. The brits knocked it out of the park with that monster. Then they pass design specks back and forth between Packard and Rolls Royce, and together, the Brits and Americans added a ridiculous amount of power. At least at the time, it was the best engine ever made. @@propellhatt

The lead plane talks, has their transponder reporting etc. ATC refers to the flight of 6, essentially as a single plane to other traffic. He knows it's a group of 6, but for ATC purposes, referenced as a single plane but for pointing it out to nearby traffic like this, for better description will say how many.

    Sounded a bit weird as the number jumped from 1 to 6 planes, but we had the missing F-35. And, we learned that F-35s tend to not turn on their transponders when they fly in a group.
    _In other words, when aircraft are flying in formation, only the lead aircraft is supposed to have its transponder broadcasting. This is because transponders respond to a ping sent from a ground station, and if all aircraft in formation have their transponders online in close proximity to one another, they’ll all be pinged at the same time and they’ll all broadcast their information back at the same time._
    _This would result in all of the signals reaching the ground receiver at once and potentially garbling the transmissions. So, in order to prevent that, only the lead aircraft in the formation is to leave its transponder “squawking.”_

      Wasn´t it the ATC that told the civilian planes where the F-35 are ?

      Correct, but even military planes follow civilian procedures when not flying non combat missions in civilian airspace. It's better for safety.
