You’re one badass girl. Watching this made me so glad I didn’t do a surgical residency. Speaking for all the ER docs- thanks for all your hard work. Never goes unnoticed.
I work in the health field myself. No Healthcare worker should work over 17 hours at a time. That should be illegal. That's when something can go wrong and lawsuits etc etc. Healthcare system has to change in general. Overworking people and when something goes wrong then its a problem.
I kinda laughed at the “120 day on call” comment, but even 120 hours of being on call is crazy. You are such a trooper and still find the energy to go to the gym after your long hours and still answering work messages. You’re awesome!
Great video, you make the hospital look so much less scary. If I ever needed surgery, I would prefer a happy positive doctor over a grumpy one any day!
Absolutely incredible. To think about all in time, energy, long hours sleepless nights etc just to have the knowledge and ability you and Drs. alike have is unreal. To have the knowledge of how to use machines, medicines, tools the list goes on and on is unfathomable. The schooling and staying up to date on all the current medicines and procedures as well as all the paperwork, phone call, emails is something else. I complain about my 8 hour day at work quite often. And you drive an SRT.
You’re such an inspiration Dr. Daisy! Is it possible for you to make a video about your journey in medical school and how you got into medical school and what the process was like? I am a current college student and I plan on taking the MCAT spring 2023 and I would love to know how you encountered all the struggles!
I remember when I was a kid I wanted to be a doctor but too expensive so I went for engineering instead. 🎉 pays the bills. Thank you for taking us through your routines! Watching from Houston,TX🤙🏻🤟🏻
Love the video, it's just the sound effects were too much. I aspire to become a general trauma surgeon. 🙏🏼 It's so nice to see another latina in the field because it's rare. Keep it up you're doing great!!!
I can’t wait to get my hands on a DaVinci 😏. This is the best video I’ve seen on UA-cam so far of what to expect on call as General Surgery resident without all the usual doom and gloom.
Thank you! I would say - don't stress. Do your best and take it one day at a time. A career is amazing but not if it takes your life away from you. Always remember that living a life you love comes first.
Epic is giving me flashbacks 😅 Wait! I commented too early... lol Hospital plumbing must suck everywhere.. The hospital I used to work at had 2 BAD leaks. One was in MRI... imagine that panic. The other was in OP registration where a mystery liquid dripped down on my lip 🤮 Then noodles (??) came pouring down (cafeteria was above). Thank God no patients were around! You're giving me all kinds of flashbacks, Doc! 😂
@@hailey_0014biologically your brain cannot function well without enough sleep, no amount of training or caffeine will keep your brain running optimally. After 24 hours without sleep your coordination is equivalent of a .1% BAC, higher then the legal limit for driving. And certainly higher then what you should be at to preform surgery (0.0%)
Omg I literally love this!! How exciting! I can really tell that you love gen surgery when you’ve barely slept but you’re still smiling and joking around, or maybe it’s just that your personality is awesome😂 It’s so nice to watch a video with a doctor that isn’t complaining or dreading their shift (that’s fine too, it’s a really hard job) this just reminded me of how exciting medicine really is. Thank you!!
Gym Rat: Hi I am a gym rat. What you do for a living? Dr. Daisy: I am a Surgery Resident. Gym Rat: What movie is that? Dr. Daisy: Never mind just give a spot. 🤣🤣
Found you on TikTok and as a fellow 3rd year gen surgery resident (in an European country) your videos have been really interesting to watch! I was wondering - during the time on call do you perform all the surgeries yourself (with or without an attending) or do you mainly assist? Do you have a set of rules as to which procedures a 3rd/4th/5th year can perform themselves? We don't even have robotic surgery here so that seems reallt advanced to me already 😄
Hey! Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment! Honestly - it varies quite a bit from rotation to rotation. Some rotations we do more and others less. I definitely have done cases from start to finish but when the cases are more complex I am first assisting! There are no definitive rules but there are cases we have to have logged prior to completing residency!
@@thedaisysanchez Thank you for answering! Looking forward to your next videos! ❤️ noticed I hadn't subscribed - oops 😳 - fixing that mistake right away!
I want to encourage all medical workers out there, as a surgical nurse i have been loving my profession in nursing and have worked in two countries , just keep doing what you love irrespective of the location. In addition to having a good profession it also helped in my strategic investing plans that allowed me to purchase my third home, supporting my retirement goals.
It's essential to comprehend the complexities of investing. Having a trustworthy support system, such as a financial adviser, who can advise you is crucial, especially when choosing assets.
I operate with (ALEX MARTIN TARLOR) an investment specialist who partners with a licensed wealth management firm. For the record, his experience has been the best for my finance
I am a bit confused about this 120-hour on-call situation. I know of the 80-hour work limit, yet you seem to have to come in on your days off too for the conference post call on top of all of this? How do you sleep on this 5 day 24 hour call? How do you study? Does only this program make you come in post 80 or is this pretty much the norm for general surgery residency??
Franco-American 24 yr old son is 7th year med and now urological surgeon interne pulling 24 hour guards plus his 60 hour normal week; no Xmas with us this year nor New Years. In France med school doesn't cost ANYTHING compared to back home in the states(which I tell him constantly,) but he'll be paid roughbly $2000 per month as an interne for the next 5 years(and working these incredible hours....) rr Normandy, France
Hi Daisy, I have a question with you working all those hours is that healthy and is it safe being that you will performing surgery and you need well alert and rested. It reminds me when truck drivers would drive long period of time and not its against the law and that also goes for pilots. I wouldn't want any surgeon to operate on me without a good night rest. Isn't that a safety issue?
It's a cool video to watch and see how much work you have 😅 One thing that really stands out though is your nails, how are you allowed to have your nails done while you're working..? That's a really big risk for spreading bacterias.. 😕
Doesn’t the acgme have guidelines that keep residents from working hours like this? Are people too afraid to report their program if it ignores the guidelines?
That’s what I was thinking. I thought the max you could work was 80 hours a week. Maybe it’s different because it was just “on call” not like that makes it easier.
Loved the video! Just curious, are you allowed to wear a little bit long nails? In our country they are sooo strict about that, especially when you are an MD student 😅
How do you manage to go home after working all day till 11 in the night ans then waking up at 5 1. Hows thst possible 2. Arent you afraid of falling asleep by mistake 3. What happens if theres a emergent case whilst youre asleep
Hey Doc, I noticed you had a number of hernia repairs. Was wondering if all or most of them had a common cause, if so, what it was? And your lady patient at 12:52, What was the cause of her volvulus?
In india you have to be on-call for 24 hours all 3 years of your Residency, Your Seniors can call you anytime during these 3 years There are aslo 36 hours duty shifts and It Really Becomes Toxic Alot of Times I Heard A Guy Got Serious problems In his Legs and alot of lymphadema so he went through a surgery of his whole legs Because besides his own duty he was also working in place of His Seniors as a part of Ragging Otherwise the Seniors won't teach you nothing It becomes Toxic Alot Of Times And They have to go through exams also so It is Really Tough
If truckers aren't allowed to do more than 12 hour shifts, why are doctors? I wouldn't want someone performing surgery on me if they were really tired.
I’m a PA and actually in my family med job (which I left last November) we had call as well. About 4 times a year. It would switch between PAs and NPs and the physicians would be on there only if we needed them. Otherwise we got all of the calls. This was a week straight, while we were working and those weeks we were on call we also worked half day Saturday so 5.5 work days plus 7 days of call. The call did not start until clinic was over so 5pm-7am was call. So stressful and I was bringing my laptop everywhere (including the gym). It was actual patients so we would have to call the patients back, figure out what’s going on, and then give them our advise, or prescribe meds, sometimes order labs if it was a Covid concern, etc. Now I’m looking to switch into gen surg.. and a job for a PA was just posted two days ago. Just hoping I get my new state licensing number before they find someone 😂 hoping this week. I started my application in April when we knew we were moving.

I'd be less worried about the leak and more afraid about the fact that my surgeon is operating on 4 hours of sleep!
How is this still legal??
I love these types of videos 🥰
There is a video on youtube abut a woman who was training in Surgery at Johns Hopkins in 1999. She was on call for 3 days straight!!
Just discovered your channel and loving it 😍❤️

Disagree. This is what they are trained to do. Just the same way everyone has different habits and schedules this is how some people function best.

you do a lot of hernia repairs as a third year general surgery resident!
