Good video, you were lucky to get those shots down in the Village without some walloper from Lindsay House coming and bothering you. I'm a recent interloper having only moved here 20 years ago, but I find the story of the development interesting. There are some good videos on South Lanarkshire's YT channel. Unfortunatly it was a good idea badly executed in so much as now that the indistry has packed up and left, all that remains is sprawling suburb which gets in the way of the main M74/M77 link.
Two stuart's commented already? Guess I'll be the third. This was a very nice documentary on my own home town, facts I didn't even know about and land marks I took for granted like the old Village really made this worth a listen. Thank you for taking the time to visit East Kilbride and revealing its history.
This is a good channel and a rare, hidden gem. It took me a long time to stumble onto it amidst the ocean of conspiracy crap that just floods YT! Having Scottish ancestry myself, it's nice to get to see some of it. Reminds me of the way Travel channel used to be. Now, they too, are flooded with all sorts of paranormal shows. Can't I just watch something..decent, for once? Now, let's see if we can do something about that sub base. I'll be doing some sharing myself. I can't believe that the subs are this low. Everyone here likes the channel. I guess, like I said, it's just too well hidden. Very well done too!
Yep thats my town lived here ever since my family settled in Scotland beyond a brief few weeks in Glasgow it was much better than a large city as coming from a small village in Poland it can be a bit overwhelming to live in a large city even though asians live in mega metropolies.
@Some Guy yeah he's definitely mixing it up with some place else, but still, it's bad enough that they tried to settle at the site of the old Motorola factory ahaha
There most certainly is a travelers site in east kilbride and there has been for at least 15 years to my knowledge could be a lot longer. I won't advertise the location as judging by some of the comments it might result in some more racist remarks... Ignorance is bliss 👌
@@Jana-om4bb ignorance is bliss for the people like yourself that don't know there is a travelers community in their local town who clearly have a problem with travelers . For me its no problem and i don't see why it would be, they are people that are shunned by 'the locals' but live a quiet life just like everyone else. If its a problem for you i think you need to take a serious look at why. What are you going to say to your local mp "there f*ucking gypsies in my town!" maybe when your there with your torch and pitch fork you should complain about blacks and Irish... Your one backwards thinking individual
It's a shame you missed out on 2 historic pieces of EK that i think are still relevant. Calderwood castle & Craigneith Castle they are both opposite each other in the Glen sadly the council demolished Calderwood Castle in 1951 & Craigneith Castle fell to peices but both still have some Remains left. I think it is really cool that there's a 13th and 17th century castles in EK not sure how many people here know about them.
There is also the Hunter brother's home in what was called " long Calderwood ". William Hunter contributed in many way to modern medicine, his brother ( John ) was a noted surgeon. In my early teens ( early sixties ) Calder Glen was a favourite place there was remnants of a castle there, would that have been Calderwood Castle ?
@@1998foxpad Been plenty of times and other than sheer size and a fuck off, half empty shopping centre, it's hard to tell the difference. Grew up in EK, left at 23. Bugger all industry, sky high crime, boarded up lockups galore, swing parks just big broken glass arenas, the town I knew is dead. Its just a bin that's over a decade late being emptied.
Yeah but unfortunately south Lanarkshire council have not succeeded in producing high spec skill in maintenance, just a crooked organisation lining their own pockets
Interesting video with some good facts. But no "unfortunately" about the demolition of some EK buildings such as the tax centre, Stuart Hotel, schools etc. Horrible, brutalist architecture and good riddance. The Bruce Hotel might as well be an office block with its straight line of rooms and big water tank plonked on top. As you say, the Dollan Baths are a bit better, but it's a pity they stuck that huge chimney up from its side to spoil the curves.
Thanks, Graeme, for your comments. I understand of course what you mean about EK's "brutalist architecture" and most people today would share your verdict. However, in its early days, EK had a distinctive modern image for which I developed a (possibly misplaced) fondness. Emotionally, I miss seeing the tax office dominating the skyline but in the end I have to agree with you and admit that architecturally it proved to be a terrible building.
Would have liked to see more of the old village .Great info
Lovely wee video, Thanks!

What a coherent, well researched, entertaining piece. ...
Well done 'The Y. Duke', I thoroughly enjoyed that.
Thanks, Stuart. Glad you enjoyed it.

Me: Been there, been there, been there, been there, oh I have been there

Av walked down the same path you did next to the dolan baths. Weird how there’s a skate park at the front tho

My mother has been their for 30 years.
And site managers. And present warden
Thanks very much
