I used to scuba dive off the west coast of Scotland, when serving overseas in Germany, but never had the time to wonder the highlands.I think you should guide tours with 4 to 6 people in Jacobite highland gear like your videos show. That I would love to do one day. Your doing us and our ancestors a great honor with these vids thanks
Tom, what you’re doing is an important part of saving the past for the future. Here where I live every rock, tree and stream have a name. My town is called Mariposa, because when the first Europeans came here the place was filled with butterflies. The first site of our town was called Aqua Fria. Cool water. Because the Giant Sequoia live for thousands of years, each has its own name. Look how many places in Scotland are named in old Gaelic or Norse , and though evolved there’s still a story to tell. Even our personal names have a history of a deed or an important part of a life. Connections to the past, give us connections to the future. Li'la Pi'la'mayáyé Ko'lá /Thank you friend for this gift of knowledge.
I thought hiking in my beloved Southwest US was rugged, until I saw your amazing video. I descend from the Campbell Clan, Isle of Skye. Thanks for the upload & be safe!
Absolutely love it..... mountains fascinate me and the worlds they hide like the bandits waterfall that was amazing to me.....the highlands are my number one place I want to visit to hike, I could watch a video on each mountain in the highlands for hours
I got to say that watching your channel has reignited my passion for my family history, of the clan Donnachaid. My soul has always belonged to the mountains but being born and raised on the sandy shores of Australia, I often thought I was out of place. Now I know why, so thank you for rekindling this.
Love the old Scottish Highlander history, I will be in the Ben Nevis area later this year enjoying your country, more history lesson videos please sir, I love the natural wildness of the Highlands. Excellent channel content, thank you for your efforts and atb to you.
I keep coming back to this video-it’s so beautiful, it’s honestly one of my favourites, for the narration and the stories, the cinematography, and the overall feel it evokes. Beautiful work 👍
Keep putting out these great quality videos, Tom. They really cheer up an Englishman's Friday. I really value your energy, commitment, knowledge and passion and everything you are doing. All the best, Mate.
Great video! Nice to learn a bit more about the history of the Glen. Probably my main reason for learning gaelic is to be able to interpret the landscape around me better when out in the hills.
I've never been to Scotland. Now that I have my DNA results, I know I'm just a small percentage Scott. But every time I see these beautiful videos, hear the language and history, it tears out my heart. I don't know why I'm so drawn to it, but I love it all so much. Your videos are wonderful! Please continue.
Bloody hell your videos make this particular Albannaich pine for the old country. I was on Islay recently and I felt the pull of the highlands so strongly it was painful to leave. Keep up the good work. One day I'll return.
What a fantastic video! Years ago we drove through Scotland and saw many great scenic wonders but to hike through on foot like you is a great thing to see!
I am a little jealous. You video made me think about the reality of hiking here in Texas. Most property is owned or controlled. You cannot just go out walking anymore. Sad thing. Thank you for the video
Greetings from Canada! Nice video. Also nice to see in more detail the places where some of my Highland ancestors once lived. Please keep making more videos like this.
The beautiful Scottish Highlands is a mesmerising sight for one's eyes to behold , especially whilst one traverses the same old pathways..... Scottish ancestral relatives would travel upon from long ago !!!
Yes. I very much enjoy these videos whether they teach about your tools, equipment and garb or talk about the Scottish history as we view the gorgeous landscape. Your videos make me wish I was young again and had the time and funds to hike the Highlands! Thank you.
I could not understand why as a child I was drawn to Europe- though born & raised in Hawaii. A great melting pot of all places. I met my bio-dad in the early 80's. His ROOTS go back to Ireland/ Scotland, France, Germany and Sweden. I understood the love of Europe. Thank you for sharing these Stories with me. New Subscriber to your channel. ❤✨🙏❤
I did enjoy it - it was very good. I find the place names here on the border of England and Wales interesting. The ye intersect and tell the story of shifting boundaries. All the best. Mark
Thanks Fandabi: I enjoyed the video While my family name (Spencer) is of Norman origins a large part of my sole is in Scotland. I enjoy the opportunity to feel more of it Thanks again Brian 78
Love all your historic highland videos they're fantastic. All the stories and tales and how they did things. Keep up the great work. I see you don't post nearly as often so I'm guessing you don't have the opportunity to venture and make films nearly as much.
I just watched your UA-cam video can I please tell you something about me i did my time with the Scottish wild life trust . And I loved walking in the hills having good times with my mates but I don't get on the hills because I have bilateral knee pain (think you for letting me remember good times with my mates &wife )
Love the vistas and your commentary. It's great to have the Gaelic place names and pronunciations. They're nothing like the Sassanach spelling would indicate. :) [I presume the Gaelic characters would be different]. Hmmm, I guess I should ask if that word usage is OK. I live in the Southwest USA so for me there's no negative baggage. Cheers!
It's amazing where the names come from for different places.Chicago is from a native name for the area meaning "place where wild onions grow". The Tippecanoe River (near where I live) was a native name for a fish that was prolific in it's waters. The Gaelic names evoke a certain emotional quality to the places. The part of Scotland you've highlighted have a barren beauty to them, stark and strong.
Just became a Patreon supporter! You think next time you do a Highland Hiking video, you could answer some questions for us Americans? Like, do you all have a National Park Service? Who manages the land? Is it private land that’s for public use? Do you have park rangers? Are there hiking trails? Or do you just start walking? What’s the deal with hunting and fishing in these areas? Do hikers ever go missing and search and rescue has to be called? Basically, I’m wondering how such a vast area is properly managed. In America we have thousands of park rangers and Department of Natural Resources agents, and yet people still go missing and poaching still occurs.
Yes we have a National Park service, although the area in this video isn't inside a National Park. The land is private, in fact all of the UK is privately owned I think but there are rights to roam and these are most liberal in Scotland where wild camping is legal everywhere but a select few places. We have park rangers but I'm not sure if they're as numerous as they are in America. I've been hiking here for years and I don't think I've seen a park ranger. There are hiking trails or footpaths you can follow on OS maps but you can just as easily make your own routes up. Yes hikers do go missing and on rare occasions die in the wilderness in the UK. We have a volunteer Mountain Rescue Service who do brilliant work.
I am a little late to comment this, but I wanted to watch this in peace since it seemed promising :3 And I am not disappointed at all! :D Some stuff I knew already (yay) but it was really interesting! And you made the video so well, plus when you talk I hear how the names are pronounced properly. Thank you! :) Edit: wow, your channel grew a lot! Over 420 likes in one day :D Congratulations!!
thanks for the video. I enjoyed it. would have been great to have you camp more traditionally if possible since it's about history, and if you could tell a story or myth or 2 around the fire, or stove lol.
Nice, thanks for filming this and translating! More trips and stories would be great. Could you camp in the waterfall, hidden, bandit area? Is it possible?

I have good news, he does this now, though your gear is on you!
Man, I loved the history lesson. You made Scotland seem like a magical land from some fairytale or old epic tale. Great video.
It is a magical place. Esp the more north you go. Incredible. :)

BTW that's one sad sad story about Deirdre.
Have you explored the area at the bandits falls? The "Valley " looks to be a place where there may be something to find.
Fantastic!
That was incredible.😊
How cold was the dam that you swam in? Love your work, yourself and Erin need to do a Series on the mountain huts around Scotland in the future.
Another fantabulous video!
Magnificent

Quality vid as usual m8. Love from south west scotland x
Amazing :O !
Are you ever worried about the water you drink from streams being bad for you? Everything looks so clean.
Interesting how much a square wave sounds like bagpipes
Nice, thanks for filming this and translating! More trips and stories would be great. Could you camp in the waterfall, hidden, bandit area? Is it possible?
Thanks :) You can and i did. It will hopefully be in a future video ;)
Fabulous! I shall eagerly await your video!
Great video with spectacular scenes. Good information too. What tipi tarp were you using for your shelter?
Nate
Thanks! Its the DD Pyramid tent MC :)
