Initially it was started good purpose for temple clean, food distribution ,dance and music purpose .years go wealthy and power man use their power destroy that women life. Do you known lots of devadhasi distributed their money and knowledge for village and that city development.
Nope. Even in the beginning those girls were meant to sexually serve the Brahmins. Read the Puranas to find out 😅

Once Devadasi was considered as Goddes actually later on the rulers forcefully used them for prostitution. They were the protectors of art

This excellently shows the despotic rule. How women (especially of lower strata) were exploited by temple priests for lust, solely. All this under the garb of tradition and culture. Even today, anything and everything becomes pious under the garb of ancestral tradition despite the glaring facts of suffocation and gloom that it brings on the victims. Mutual consent is of utmost importance in a sexual intercourse or any kind of relationship !!!!
Thank you for portraying the truth at least now.
Yes you are right women in lower caste particularly face lot of problems
How fear about God is misused for selfish desires.

A change can be made only when humans stand by truth and good. This doesn't take much, if we start standing and fight against the evil practices in the society, our next generation will learn how to be brave enough to talk against bad. let's not make our future generations cowards, We have great history of leaders who made our present a better place to live.
Well said 👏👏
WrOng portying of Devadasi s... Actually they are temple artist. Rest of everythong made up storet

That was so painful!! And I specially need to address the costume designer who painted perfect distinction of dressing during times a 200 yrs ago. And the actors did complete justification to the roles!!! Such a great but poignant short film !! And the background music was so enticing !! This was deep !
Wrong costume for 200 years ago, especially for Devadasi. They did not wear pinvosuvam sari, we know that from murals. They also wore ravike/choli. We can see this on paintings and murals from 16th century temples. Plus, we also have vijayanagara empire eye-witness accounts on what they looked like, how they dressed and how they lived from Portuguese travellers. This documentary is poorly researched in terms of costume.
@@RedDragon770 oh my ! I didn't know these! I had read couple of articles about women not wearing upper coverings( blouse) and guess the chronology of the scene has not been mentioned in the film . In both ways it's really painful to see devdasis suffering !😭😭😭
@@achyutmurari1218 Here is eye-witness account on what Portuguese saw in Vijayanagar Empire -> "Who can fitly describe to you the great riches these women carry on their persons? - collars of gold with so many diamonds and rubies and pearls, bracelets also on their arms and on their upper arms, girdles below, and of necessity anklets on the feet. The marvel should be otherwise, namely that women of such a profession should obtain such wealth; but there are women among them who have lands that have been given to them, and litters, and so many maid-servants that one cannot number all their things. There is a woman in this city who is said to have a hundred thousand pardaos, and I believe this from what I have seen of them." - "all girls born of these women belong to the temple. These women are of loose character, and live in the best streets that there are in the city; it is the same in all their cities, their streets have the best rows of houses They are very much esteemed, and are classed amongst those honoured ones who are the mistresses of the captains; any respectable man may go to their houses without any blame attaching thereto. These women (are allowed) even to enter the presence of the wives of the king, and they stay with them and eat betel with them, a thing which no other person may do, no matter what his rank may be."

Awesome film, this system was once existing in Himachal too. Here it is connected with lord Shiva. I wanted to know what about in South. Is it still exists in village?
No this was happened before India independence and actually not all the King and kingdoms supported this
This movie was incomplete by showing the priest and temple also the king in a wrong way 😑 The history is different and that have showing only 5 percent
I will make a video about this soon 🔜
It has changed its ways .but still present
We also connect mostly with shiva, krishna, muruga ( son of shiva) as our beloveds. That's how the dance and the music is conposed.
Still it exists in parts.. Andhra - Tamilnadu border in the name of 'Mathamma'.

Because of periyaar
For their selfish they named the foolish things as custom and tradition which were framed by man out of his selfishness
Very true.
Good story and it was really done in those days and it feels to travel on that year it tells about how the word devadasi is changed female god worker into temple prostitute , for this reason thanthai periyar who fight against this temple controller bhramin people .

The costumes, cinematography and acting are exquisite. However, you have looked at this institution through the eyes of the Western world that reduces the complexity of the Eastern world to barbarity. Were not women allowed the choice of partners and were they not independently wealthy within this institution? It would have been great had you portrayed the complexity of this institution that the British destroyed. This destruction forced many of them into the streets as sex workers.
So true
Another westerner romanticising an evil- an evil perpetrated in the name of religion. There is no difference between those who claim that Hijab worn by Muslim women under religious compulsion is a sign of female empowerment and emancipation.
The ritual prostitution was foisted on the poor and marginalised castes and never practised by the upper castes. The victims were initiated when they were mere children. There was no element of choice. Only a callous and ignorant person can ever hold a brief for this cruel institution.
Francesca Brenner you don't know what you are talking about this was not a holy institution this was forced prostitution. Low caste women were forced into this life as children, were not free to leave or to marry. The British were right to try to put a stop to it. Unfortunately it still goes on today.
@@arulsammymankondar30 why are you bringing Muslims into this you hypocrite
@@najouabel97belhaddad43
Islam has it's own share of legalized prostitution in the name of 'mutta marriage'.
This is apart from legalised sex slavery in the name of religion.
The above facts were far from my thought when I made my post;thank you for bringing my lapses.
Though I'm not happy with the story, the cinematography, costumes, actors have done great job

How can that priest heartlessly sleep with a little girl that too whom he taught from her 5 years of age.
That is exactly what I am trying to bring up, and not agreeing about in the old practice. But it used to happen in some temples ( when I did research on the subject in South India. Lots of stories came out like that. ) That is indeed very sad. And should never happen in present or future with anyone.
@@lenalaxmi I also read nice try but still some places devadasi tradition is alive but age of marriage changed but not much
jai cool yes I know. When I was studying in India classical dance in kuchipudi Art academy, one much younger girl of age 14 ( from junior group)was given away for Marriege by her parents. That day she was crying about it, as her attention was on studying. But her parents were opposite were very happy. That from their point of view found a good match for her. And her life is fixed and settled. Don’t know even how is she now, since it was long ago. But hope well. They were from poor family. But I know for sure she didn’t wanted it then.
This tradition only started during the bloody Krishnadevarayar era..Nayaka..Marathi...Muslim rulings..
Because the "pottukattuthal" tradition only belongs to the Vaduga desa (Karnataka, Andhra pradesh and Maharasthra).
Tamilians/Malayalies whether brahmin or non brahmin they don't wear "pottu/bottu thaali"
Thanks to the British Raj, Dr.Muthulakshmi, Kundrakudi Adigalar...etc stood firm on abolishing this filthy practice.
Earlier era this tevadiyaar tradition was purely based on women's freedom of choice on renunciating the materialistic life and devoted to the spiritual path, they were highly educated and professionals, not engaging in sexual or illicit activities.
Later these filthy kings, kings men, heads, priest were abusing..exploiting them... anywhere...those heinous beasts also eventually fall down and consumed by worms.
I am also hailed from the brahmin community, I condemn and curse those bastards reborn in pathetic state and suffers in deeper misery.
@@lenalaxmi
It is another reason why male dancer started dressing up like girl and performing the dances and stage dramas to protect them from the evil eyes.(in my opinion).
Kuchipudi dance also propagated by male dancers in the medieval age.. (may be at the beginning it was danced by female dancers) later females were hidden or refrained only male dancers were dancing it.
M.S.Subhulakshmi herself hailed from a Devadasi clan was assigned as "mistress-concubine" for a Chettiyar by her mother Shanmukhavadivu, she runaway and took refuge under Kalki sadasivam (then a journalist, freedom fighter, activitist).

Foolish custom. Thank you for remembering was there it in India.
The short film show that not only the below three castes were at fault the top caste aslo had flaws in its system . Wish people learn be knowledgeful and stop these even at some small villages such things are still happening .. we think we are wise and know everything about universe but we are so wrong
Top caste problems are exaggerated to uplift the social values of bottom castes.
there is confusion between daasi and vesi, both are two different terms and meaning... but all through history and now too, exploiting others for one's benefit is sick and must stop... we are here to uplift the under priveleged and grow together as a race and species...not cheat and exploit others for our benefits...
Such an evil man. Why aren't there laws to protect children? I hope someday there will be strong punishment and laws with regular inspections to protect children
It is illegal in independent India.

Manusmriti Inspired !
Thanks to AMY CARMICHAEL(1901).. whose tireless efforts in rescuing Devdasis got international recognition eventually made it illegal .. Yet, this kinda Oppression on Poor little girls has still been happening in darkness.. Hate this barbarism in name of Religion ! Thu 💦💦💦💦
same freedom must be given to other religion girls also who were forced to remain virgin in front of world but forced in prostitution to propagate their religion
What about Dr Muthulakshmi Reddy
Hell bent on crediting the westerners
How is it inspired by 'manusmriti'? Dont blabber. Read a law based paper regarding devadasi system, they say that it became a mode of prostitution after the temple funds were halted (around british era), the temple dancers were forced to take up prostitutionas they had no other means of living. When the temple is adequately funded, there was no need for prostitution, the devadasis in olden days were highly respected and treated very well more like priestesses.
This short film is full of flaws and misinformation. It has a biased British approach towards the Dēvadāsi system.
1. Such young girls were not initiated as dēvadāsis. The texts mention that she should be a Ṣoḍaśī or prāptā rajasvalā trayī, meaning either a sixteen-year-old or three years must have past her puberty.
2. A brahmin, especially a temple priest could not copulate with her. Usually, the patrons of dēvadāsis were from the noble or the merchant class i.e. mantrivarga or vartakavarga.
3. The dēvadāsis neither did errands like drawing water from the well and serve food for the priestly class nor did they reside in the temple premises. Their responsibility was only to take care of rańgabhōga in the temple. They lived in their residences in the vicinity of the temple and practiced their art forms. They also maintained the temple lamps of the festive occasions.
The only fact shown in this film is that they danced in front of the deity.
To understand the devadasi custom, one should read the inscriptions and various literary works. Dēvadāsis were an active part of the ancient society and they did command respect amongst the common masses. They were considered very divine and were invited to rituals and ceremonies and their blessing was sought. They also have participated in many philanthropist activities. They were very well-read and have composed many literary works. They have built / renovated many temples and towers. They have caused many tanks, lakes, wells and gardens. They have given generous donations. There are lakes and canals named after them. The water canal near Srirangapattana is named after a dēadāsi, Bangara Doddi.
The second queen of Krishnadevaraya, Chinnadevi, hailed from a devadasi clan. She was the pioneer of Kuchupudi dance form. In the recent past Bangalore Nagarathnamma was a great woman who took prodigious pains and dedicated all her wealth for the construction of a samādhi to Thyagaraja swami, one of the musical trinities in Carnatic classical world. She also published a literary work composed by an earlier dēvadāsi to show the British people that dēvadāsis were not just prostitutes as understood by them. Many famous musicians of the first three decades of the 20th century feared and respected Veena Dhanammal who was also a devadasi. All these people never chided their identity as a dēvadāsi.
In the northern part of India, it was during the Islamic invasions, when the temples were razed down that these dēvadāsis lost their patronage and were taken away as captives. When sustaining a temple itself became unthinkable how could the people involved with rites and rituals of a temple be protected. In the southern part of India, it was during the British period, who in the name of land survey abducted the temple lands, that these dēvadāsis were thrown to the streets. Their properties were confiscated in various mean ways and they were labelled as sex slaves in the temple complexes. This also suited their evangelistic agenda. They misinterpreted the entire devadasi custom as they did with other of our cultural aspects.
Even if the film maker claims to have done extensive research, it is for sure they have not gone through the magnanimous epigraphical sources and literary works. They have just done something based on hear-say details.
Thank you for such a detail feedback!
its very pain full

What you think about nun in your highest educational community.
When I am studying in my college,i meet so many nun means sisters, but they are not want to prayed to God as a sister. She want to her family back.but so sad no one listened her voices.
of course I believe, if person wants to go back to the family she should go back! and if family is truly loving her they should except her back! or if for some reason family dont want to except her back, she should create a family of her own! i hope it works out for best for your nun friend. no one should be there if they feel it is not their place.
