The 124 is a criminally underrated car. Looks awesome, sounds awesome, responsive steering with decent feedback, and you can easily make good power from that 1.4, reliably.
That carbon roof really does transform the exterior 🔥
But it doesn't transform the car into a grand tourer.
Unfortunately it's more than one grand :(
If you can't afford the Abarth version, get the Classica. It's TOPS and much less expensive. Great video...
I agree. I got the Classica trim last December & I'm loving it
Once again, nice video!! As I said in the previous video's comment section.. this channel deserves tons of more viewer and subscriber because all the vids are worth to watch! Keep it up🙏👌
Thanks 😊😊😊
In 2022 I went from Lisbon to Le Mans , to see the 24h and I took my Abarth . We were two people in the car , and we could take luggage for the two, and there was still room to pick up a couple of bottles of wine in Sauternes! The car doesn’t drink a lot , it’s confortable , drives superbly and yes , the amount of attention it gets it’s absolutely bezerk!! Imagine getting to the parking lot in Le Mans where there were these Ferraris , AC cobras , jaguars , Aston martins , you name it ! And then the little Abarth arrives and everyone was staring and taking pictures :D mod wise I didn’t do a lot , a remap to 190, a little bit shorter springs from Abarth specialist , some OZ wheels and that’s it ! Great car !
It is a lovely car indeed. Affordable open top wind in your hair motoring. And a very good handling package as well. Can’t wait to rent one in Europe on the next bit of travel....
Another awesome video!!
Great review, I'm 5'8" and so would fit into this car no problem, it's definitely on my shopping list as my mid life crisis is soon to kick in. Btw, stupid question, does the roof come off and how easy is it to remove..? 🤔
Thanks Steve! The roof is removable yes, there are something like six bolts and it’s pretty light. The soft top is still underneath.
EXCELLENT share thx
I now own the exact car in this video, so hope you looked after it! It was £6k off list price having done 6k miles; just hope it wasn't abused on tracks beforehand but I hear manufacturers look after press cars meticulously and this one hasn't missed a beat.
Great review, helped me decide to buy the car.
Haven't taken the hard top off yet but don't intend to because I love the way it looks, adds warmth and has much better rear visibility over the soft top.
I've only ever seen on other Abarth and never another hardtop so it does feel unique.
Ah fantastic! Well I’m glad I could help in the decision process 😁 You’ve got a belter of a car there 👍
@@BOTBreviews Thanks mate. I bought it from Abarth UK directly and was a 5hr return trip to test it and a 5hr return trip to buy it, but was definitely worth it!
😍
Hello we are considering buying this car can you tell me if you had any issues with it while you owned it and any history on the car would be of interest Regards Ken
I will make a point on your comments about the car needing a bit more power, I do agree, especially now Mazda offer 200bhp in the MX5, but they won't get there with the Multiair. I have an Abarth Punto Evo Supersport, which also runs the same engine, with 180bhp. That same engine can be found throughout the Fiat range, most often down at a lowly 135bhp in the Fiat 124 and various Puntos. It's tuned to within an inch of it's life without fitting specialist parts in the stock Abarths, and owners really do struggle to get any more out of it without spending serious money. If they can squeeze in the 1.7L Multiair from the Alfa 4C in it, then that's the power problem sorted, but that's the important part - getting that engine in the car.
The 124 R-GT rally car uses that engine, so I've no doubt they can fit it in, lets just pray that they sell us a road going version eventually
Is the Alfa Romeo Giulietta Veloce TCT using the same 1.7 engine in the 4c? If you can find one of those, it might be possible.
Amazing Video. Well done. Is it possible to install the hardtop on the abarth 124 spider?
Thanks! Yes, the hardtop fits the normal 124!
There are fiberglass and carbon fiber roofs available in the US. Probably in the UK and Europe also.
Fiat will never let this develop to full potential because they don't want it to outshine Alfa. This is why the Fiero was never fast - the Corvette team blocked it.
and let's not forget about Mazda too...
It was original agreed with Mazda, that this would be an Alfa...which would have made a lot of sense in many ways. Including that Alfa has no real entry-level in N America now.
Nice video!!! Do you know if abarth has the removable top for sale as a separate piece? I'm trying to get one for my 124 gt here in L.A .
I’m not sure if the carbon hard top is for sale officially, but I’m sure there are aftermarket ones available 👍 - Tim
@@BOTBreviews you're right how ever I wonder if those after market roof come with defroster? Any way thanks a lot for your reply and keep it up with the videos they are outstanding!
@@ricardoespiritu8843 Not available in the US I'm afraid... EU market has it available on the official Abarth parts store. Maybe you can contact your local Fiat/MOPAR dealer and arrange a delivery? It'll cost you though...
Available in the UK for around .......£4500........!
Funny i heard so much about the Abarth and the features. And bought one....
Great video!
Thanks!
Good video, keep at it.
Thanks! 😁👍
My wife got her new Abarth 124 Spider today and in the short time we’ve had it, the Spider has bitten us and we’re hooked!! And I see you have a mk3 Octavia vRS... so do I! Great minds, eh!!??!!
Sadly the vRS went a couple of months ago, replaced with a Leon Cupra 290! 😁
In The Headlights Ooh, nice 👍 Still VAG 😉 That being said, not sure what I’m replacing mine with next year... I’ve had 5 now, so it’s hard to decide...
Well I must say, I miss the Octavia’s practicality, but I’m loving having 290hp 😁
Which is better MX-5 or this?
Did you ever revisit the 124 or Abarth, before they stopped making them? I regret not buying one from new but family etc. I reckon Alfa should do another iteration as an entry-level model for them next, use their 1.8t and actually market it next time. With the new Peugeot tie-up however, I imagine all chance is lost for us who want a non-MX-5 option.
Sadly not. I think they’re great value second hand now though, losing huge chunks of money all the time.
I love Abarth
A colour coded fiberglass or composite hardtop and spend the money on the motor makes more sense. If they took a leaf out of BMW's book with the 530d and put a small low pressure turbo for down low in the rev range and a larger turbo that comes on boost just before the first turbo is spent then there is no reason why they couldn't get 200hp from the 1.4! Then you've got a desirable small RWD car that still shouldn't compete too much with the Alfa.
Totally agree! Lots of potential in this car.. - Tim
@@BOTBreviews There is a large aftermarket for theese cars.
The 1.4 T can hanlde 240hp without many issues, but going beyond that is where it starts to get expensive
Then you have afetrmarket LSD, springs and dampers, brake upgrade kits...
So you can easily make a seriously focused sportscar out of the car for as little as 5-8K €
My neighbors has this car and he said to get parts for this car is a massive headache as it’s not very common car
If only I could get that gorgeous hardtop for my Abarth in America
You’re the second person to comment that! Maybe FCA should take note!
In The Headlights I messaged Abarth and got no answer
I am sure aftermarket roof will appear pretty fast
Here you go my friend

Who never heard about the 124 GT? Stef AB had the GT concept in his hands for weeks and that was almost a year ago already.
I am 6,3ft and I cannot drive that car. I dont know how you manage to drive it to be honest cuz I sat in 2 of them and I could basically not move my left leg.
Here in the UK they’re certainly not very well known, the MX-5 is far more popular. It’s definitely tight as I mention in the video, but with the handbrake down there’s just enough room to shift gears.
I would be pleased to hear a couple of words on how to mount the roof, and how to remove it from the car. A video would do even better. And how to keep it, since Abarth has no case for it.
all it needs is a bigger engine
Not necessary...one friend just remaped it to 200hp and it fly way...believe me...200hp in a 1100kg car is a supercar
Joshua Minke all it needs is a tuned engine
A lot more power throughout the entire range is just an ECU flash away. The stage 1 Tork tune massages the Multi Air to make good power all the way to redline, and makes it a solid 14 second car. Exhaust, intercooler, Multi Air springs, and a different turbo if you're feeling adventurous, and things start getting really crazy for a car sitting on 205s and weighing so little.
I just have to say 22b
I m really sick of this reviews where i have to look at a face talking me about a car . like show me the god damn dash the aceleration noise .you might as well do the review from your sofa ...everybody doing this i dont understand why
So you would prefer just a voice over? Come on, we spend a lot of time shooting lovely b-roll that we cut in so we do face shots a lot less than most. May we suggest you start your own channel and show us how it’s done?
Bitter, table for one? Will you be having cheese with that whine?
Let's see the freaking car not you
Never trust someone that uses a phone with a notch
It’s the poor mans ferrari California
Oh I've heard of it. I just usually call it by it's real name ... fiata
Every review says that this car is "fast" or equivalent. But as someone who's slowest car was a 4.7sec 0-60mph(100kmh)... I feel dropping to this would feel slow as shit
I wouldn't call it the fastest car around, but I regularly drive a GT3, M2, M4, etc and on everyday roads I by far prefer the 124 GT (which I own). SO MUCH FUN. Worthless on a track because the lack of power becomes obvious very soon, but on small country roads it is the best car you can get in my opinion. On small windy roads like that it is so agile it really holds its own against 718s and Carreras! 0-60 in the sub 5s is one kind of fun, but kicking out the back at every corner exit and playing with that wonderful rear diff all the time is just something else. Give it a test drive - you'll forget all about your previous faster cars, I promise ! :)
Good stuff Luke! Do you agree it’s a bit of a missed opportunity though? Dialled up another 20% it would be an absolute weapon. - Tim 😁👍
In The Headlights i think they knew it would already be expensive using the 1.4 multiair (which is already tuned to its upper limit in the Abarth 124) and using a bigger engine would just make it go up into another price bracket altogether. So instead they focused heavily on weight reduction to get as much punch as possible out of those 170hp. They were already getting a lot of heat for the Abarth 124 Spider being too expensive, so if they upgraded the engine (and therefore brakes, suspension, etc etc) on the GT they would have been selling it for 55K.
I get what you mean when you say it lacks just a bit of power in some contexts (I did hesitate a bit between the 124 GT new and a used Exige S3) but honestly the ride is so unique and fun with that fantastic rear diff and the ridiculous noise that I don’t regret the lack of power for a second. Super boring on main roads frankly, but there’s nothing like tearing up some tiny country roads with it. I think of it a bit like a classic roadster - power doesn’t really come too much into the equation, it’s all about the wonderful driving experience. Then again I do live in the south of France so that makes it all the more enjoyable - so wonderful to cruise around the sunny mountain roads with the roof down enjoying that sound! Too busy enjoying the whole experience to consider the lack of hp honestly!
Sorry got a bit carried away with my reply there haha - I could talk about this car all day! :D
the engine in this car is so absolutely terrible.
when I found out it has a single over head cam - like a car from 1975 - I almost vomited.
why would you take your brand new sports car and put in one of the worst eco engines you could find, that guy needs a pay deduction.
Should've lost more time actually researching instead of typing uninformed crap in the comments.
It has a physical exhaust cam and an independently controlled solenoid-based electro-hydraulic intake module. Which in practical terms is even better than having a traditional vvt twin-cam setup. More torque, better mileage and infinite intake variation settings.
It's so absolutely terrible and archaic, as you say, this technology was sold to Schaeffler and is now used by Jaguar as well.
Stick to chinese cartoons, cars aren't your thing, clearly.
@@diogo266 dumb kid thinks oil pressure controlled valves are better - only for saving gas.
this engine is a joke and can't even make 300hp where did you get this more torque BS?
people are installing 500 abarth valves on this car because they are so bad.
you obviously never owned a high horsepower turbo car or you wouldnt be saying this garbage, have you even looked a 124 dyno map? it has no power in the top end which is a joke for a turbo car.
