Time for my notes again! Yes, the first week of McLean Stevenson, best known as Lieutenant Colonel Henry Blake from the TV series MASH (he even co-wrote an episode, "The Trial of Henry Blake"). Stevenson initially appeared infrequently on Match Game, only appearing in three weeks over the first couple of years, then only reappeared again after Richard Dawson's departure in 1978. (Well, it's hard to appear on television when your plane is shot down over the Sea of Japan!) He went on to appear more frequently in the syndicated series, going so far as to become a regular alongside Brett and Charles in the final syndicated season. Stevenson was a very funny contributor to the show, a tad unpredictable. I believe in a future week he'd start an episode topless, and in another from the contestant's seat. Second week for his co-star Loretta Swit. There'll be another MASH co-star about this time next year... Also the first week for Ann Elder, a comedy performer and writer looking for work following the end of Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In (which also starred Richard Dawson). She's written for Lily Tomlin, Flip Wilson, Joan Rivers and Carol Burnett, and also contributed scripts to Vicki Lawrence's sitcom "Mama's Family". She appeared in ten weeks of Match Game episodes over the next two years. She had several fun lines on the Match Game and also appeared to enjoy herself, she had a decent match rate with the contestants (especially Margie, who we'll meet in a couple of episodes time). Swit and Elder are the two remaining panelists still with us as of January 2018. Second and final week for Stu Gilliam (again with the silent "i"). Shame he never appeared more. Over the past couple of weeks of shows I've noticed that the questions are becoming ever more suggestive. Not quite the level we expect by the 1975 episodes, but we're getting there. Also, this is the final week where the credits are multi-coloured. They'd be in white text from episode 56, making them much easier to read.
McLean Stevenson was doing MASH at this time. Later years, he returned to Match Game after throwing his career away by quitting his Henry Blake character on MASH.
had to look it up, richard's crack about "mr. blackwell's hour", was richard blackwell, a fashion designer who started the "worst dressed list" in 1960.

First time a contestant wears a low-cut top and Gene says "let's expose the two questions" 🤣🤣🤣 Top answer: pantyhose. 5 seconds later.... Leggs Pantyhose! 🤯
In the earlier episodes, he wore a clip on mic, and grabbed a hand mic as the turntable was turning so that the contestant doing the super match would be miked. Later on, they eliminated the clip on mic, and he just carried a hand mic all the time.
Hysterical! (Spoiler Alert!) ... ... ... Ten seconds after we see that the #1 answer to "________ HOSE" was "Panty", the first sponsored product in the end credits was L'eggs Pantyhose! Coincidence?

Stu is annoyingly derivative of Cosby, and his humour is tedious and ill-placed (eg if you're not matching, don't go through a big folderol in an attempt to be funny, making the contestant wait on tenterhooks; it's not 'cool'). And McLean is equally annoying, trying to be funny with spit takes instead of trying to match. Indeed, Gene made some comment to that effect - try to match to help some non-celebrities make a little 💰 instead of screwing around for your own vain benefit.
Thank you so very much!!!! I ADORE McLean Stevenson & Loretta Swit!!
Both from MASH, too!
The Jersey Girl and the Illinois Boy...
This show was amazing
Thank you for the upload

Me too

Great story, but shorten it before you send it to Random House

NBC told him he was going to be a big star on their network.
"Hello Larry".
He left on the promise of bigger and better things. He once said that he thought the word loved him but really they loved him as Henry Blake.

After you lose the game, the way the stage wheels you away is quietly humiliating, haha
If senseless answers annoy you, don't watch this episode! I think it sets a record.
Totally agree. McLain using the answer "spit" for a second time was the worst of many nonsensical answers.

This is the closest the writers have come to inserting jokes into the questions.
Where is Charles Nelson Riley?
