The McLean Stevenson Show premiere episode December 1 1976
Вставка
- Опубліковано 22 гру 2014
- From an off-air recording from WNBC New York that has been making the trading rounds for a while now- mine is at least a 2nd-generation copy but still pretty good quality for its age. Starts with the station break aired after the preceeding "CPO Sharkey" episode (which the original taper cut a few commercials from, but left it alone for all of this) and ends with an NBC News Update and another station break before the next show.
Best line ever from from an actor who made a mistake leaving a series. McLean said, " I thought they loved me. They actually loved Henry Blake. "
I loved Henry Blake too, McLean; you were foolish to leave him!
@sirrobin4394 He was offered $1million by NBC, he was desperate to be a lead but was a good supporting actor.
Let down with some truly awful scripts.
Not only did i get to see an old show from my childhood but all the commercials that ran with it, AWESOME.
So he left MASH... for this? Geez. I'm no fan of MASH but for crying out loud, he was a perfect fit when it was an ensemble show before it turned into the Alan Alda Selfie show.
But this one - A show of stereotypes: The beta dad, the horny son, the divorced daughter, the obnoxious kids, the nagging mother in law, the ditzy wife. I wouldn't watch this when I was 12, why am I watching it now at 54?
At least those commercials and that '70s version of the NBC logo brought back a flood of memories. Interesting post. Thank you.!!!
I turned 12 in November 1976. Thanks for the memories.
Hello Mac? Hello Larry? Goodbye career.
I guess Hello Larry was the best of the bunch.
Exactly
McLean deserved better than this.
He had his own show. He was not complaining at all!
Oh, I think he did when it was canceled, and he headlined a string of bombs for the remainder of his career.
He stated later that he regretted leaving MASH. But they had killed off his character so he was pretty much S.O.L.
this show's song is really last minute feel to it...the kitchen is about the size of a bathroom, so I'm not sure why you would start with this premise and staging and music----besides that...
@@lavalampluva55401 that's why they killed him....so that character couldn't make a come back
This show was actually pretty good and Jerry Howser really uplifted this episode.
The major difference with this and MASH, in Mash McClean had great scripts & writers, great sets and surrounded by awesome actors.
Oh and a great theme tune
The sets and the theme song are really awful. But i am still loving this. The quality is so poor, it’s hard to believe until you see it happening!!
I honestly don’t remember if I watched this one or not back in the day. I actually stumbled across this looking for Hello Larry. Awesome upload. Great character actors and classic commercials. Thanks for this flashback to my youth.
I was 4 when this aired and a rabid kiss fan🤷🏻♂️
Interestingly, "Lenny" guested on an episode of MASH soon after this. He was involved in the b-plot for S6's "The Grim Reaper". He played a soldier from Toledo, Ohio who gives Klinger a matchbook and hooks him up with Packo's Hungarian Hot Dogs.
This show could have easily been the Henry Blake family 20+ years after he returned from Korea (If he didn't get killed)
Closer to 25 years.
@@LynxSouth That's why he's aid 20+ years.
That's why Larry Gelbart killed off Henry Blake. They didn't want Mack to reprise that role
Thank you for keeping the update. In one minute it shows the brilliance of Tom Snyder in his reading of the headlines. Not to mention that he told more about the news in that 60 seconds than most of these pretenders could do in an hour. Also, the story about Gerald Ford selling his old house: wanted $130K+, bought it for $30K+ (but it had a pool). Today, $2M at least. Sad.
That was funnier than the whole show.
It's not a bad pilot episode, but there's nothing distinctive to draw you in. Grams seems like a cool character, and the theme song is cool.
Funniest part of the episode? The boom mic at 19:20. Yup.
Thanks for posting. Never watched this one back in the day. And I did watch "CPO Sharkey" (although I don't know why).
That boom mic wouldn't have shown up on most TVs of that era. Notice that there's also a small white line appearing at the top right of the screen signaling when the commercials are about to start- that wouldn't have been seen at home either.
I enjoyed watching this episode. I thought the story like was fun. I had the priveledge of bei g in the studio when this show was recorded. Thank you for the good memmories👍
Better then I thought it would be.
What a coincidence...the video started with a preview of the miniseries "Once An Eagle" with featured Bill Windom. The McLean Stevenson show has an interesting origin. The NBC Network was shopping around for a starring vehicle for him. They chose this show. Originally the show was called "Prime of Life." It was created by Monty ("Let's Make A Deal") Hall. The star was Bill Windom and it's unclear if a pilot was shot. NBC told Monty to ax Bill and replace him with McLean or no chance of the show airing. Monty had to break the news to Bill.
Now this is what I've been looking for: shows complete with commercials. Thanks so much for this.
What I like about these old '70s commercials that they're sedate and straight-to-the-point. Everything today is just too flashy and beats around the bush.
Notice how SHORT the breaks are too- about ONE minute each! Plus no network logos or show promos on the screen during the actual show- I always hated when they talked over the end credits though but I'll take that over anything they do now.
I know. It's like, when I'm watching ABC, and Black-ish is on, and right on screen, in the middle of the show, it says "watch Off the Boat tonight at 8." I'm like, I'm still watching Black-ish. One show at a time here!"
@@TheMediaHoarder Today I call it commercial pollution it kills the show a 30 sitcom will be about 17 mins long after you cut out all commercials that is why I record my shows first then cut them all out. I know it helps the show with the revenue but its plain greed at this point not to mention the pop ups during the 17 mins of the show that's left shzzz
Poor Mac seems to have everyone walking all over him, especially his mother-in-law.
Jerry Houser (Lenny, the burglar) later played Wally Logan, husband of Marcia Brady, in several Brady sequels.
Dear god I remember everything about this episode! The old lady was the best! Fun fact, Lenny went on to marry Marsha Brady in the short lived Brady Brides series.
McLean Stevenson had more bombs than the Beatles had hits.
Wow, Paul Williams singing the theme song!
It went downhill from there.
I think so. Maybe he wrote it too?
It was scheduled opposite the ABC powerhouse The Bionic Man (spin-off on the Six Million Dollar Man) (the second half) and the Jacksons variety-show on CBS
Bionic Woman
Monty Hall didn't WANT McLean in the lead role- but the network had signed him to a long-term contract after he left "M*A*S*H", and they told him "You HAVE to take him". And that was that. The series lasted 12 episodes (two were unaired).
What would this show have been had they not cast Mac? Probably would've been much worse.
@@ExplorerDS6789William Windom, who starred in the 1969-70 NBC Emmy-Winning sitcom "My World and Welcome to It".
@@teresapflaumer5717 Yes, and he's a very talented actor, funny when he wants to be and intimidating when he wants to be, what does Mr. Windom have to do with McLean?
A laugh track will never make up for bad writing.
I just watched a special called, "M*A*S*H: The Comedy That Changed Television" in which McLean Stevenson says in regard to leaving M*A*S*H, "I'd gotten too big for my britches. The thing I didn't realize was that people didn't give two hoots in hell about McLean Steveson. They loved Henry Blake."
Is the oldest son supposed to be a teenager? He looks like he's 25.
At 16:50, McLean says the son is 20 years old.
This is typical in all shows
It was never very popular but I loved the old '70's NBC "N" logo.
Thanks for this upload, and especially for leaving the commercials in it! This show was pretty bad, but at least I discovered a new way to save money at 22:10.
Jimmie Walker brought me here.
p.s., 19:20 - - the microphone drops into the scene.
Radar comes out and says "I regret to inform you that Col Henry Blake's career was shot down over Hollywood. There were no survivors."
SuperLordHawHaw McLean and his career didn’t survive the impact.
Ouch! 🤣
Blake is a fictional character.
Takes me back...Thanks
McLean is a prime example of what happens when a celebrity starts believing his own press. He left MASH under the mistaken impression that he was the main reason for the show's success. I guess three failed series in which he starred taught him otherwise.
And none of his Solo series lasted more than a Season at Best
What about "Hello, Larry"? I thought that lasted two seasons.
actually 4 remember dirty dancing 1988.
Loretta Swit said in a later interview that "Mac" as she called him, wanted to be "number one" and felt, like Wayne Rogers, that Alan Alda was getting the most limelight.
@Greg Palmer, Technically, a season and a half. It came in as a mid season replacement (14 eps) and was picked up for a full season (24 ish eps)
Sirota's Court (the Universal TV-produced sitcom which somewhat pre-figured Night Court) is what followed McLean Stevenson.
I think the intro to that was on the original tape this came from too, but it's cut off on my copy. Someone else had the theme to that uploaded here.
Learn something new everyday. I had no idea Jack "King of Comics" Kirby disciple Mark Evanier actually co-wrote the story idea for this show.
This has certainly gotten a lot of attention since I uploaded it. I'm hoping to upload a new copy of this in the proper frame rate (I don't think that was possible back then) but have to locate the DVD it's on first. I may need to delete this upload after that happens but that would mean losing the comments; we'll just see what happens.
yup, McLean Stevenson, inspiration for the "I'm gonna leave this successful prime time show and become a REAL star" award. (see also David Caruso)...
That award is kind of unfair. I mean, that was part of it, but the bit no one talks about is that he was the actor that the cast had basically designated to be what you might call their shop steward. He was the cast member who was designated to take cast issues to the producers with regard to the harsh conditions at the ranch. When someone offers you more money and better working conditions, what would you do?
I bet some of those who viewed this in recent years mistook the actor playing the son for a young Tim Allen
thank you so much for uploading this :D this is the only place I could find this available and idk why everyone is being so mean about it I think it's genuinely really silly and clever and entertaining which is what makes a good sitcom !!! I wish it didn't flop as hard as it did because I really like it
Henry Blake.....you left for this?
The theme song to this show is horrific and annoying as hell! I wonder how many viewers changed the channel before the song was even over!
Nah the theme show is awesome.
As awful as it is you have to marvel it ever got produced.
Probably not one of Paul Williams' best works.
One of the few times Monty Hall got Zonked himself.
He had to shoot for the top but sadly it did not work out..
Boom mike is visible at 19:20 near upper left corner.
Sure wish I had a couple hundred thousand bottles of the primatine tablets. I’d be swell for a long time.
the woman in the soup commercial looked like Aunt Charlene from General Hospital
"This is your friend." Pretty good line.
"Do you do kidnappings?" was also genuinely hilarious.
This was the best of McLean’s post MASH sitcoms....but that’s not saying much.
Story by Mark Evanier - who became the head writer for the Groo the Wanderer comic.
I think that he was also the head writer for Welcome Back Kotter
Wow, that Samsonite commercial! Wheels in 1976?
I picked up one of those at Goodwill for $6 a few years ago. Really well made. I used it mainly for storage not for travel.
Other than computer goods and hi-tech medical equipment, the 21st century really has nothing over the 20th.
It'll never catch on.
That laugh track...holy christ.
He left MASH for this??
Yikes!
What is cool is that actress who played karen in this pilot would actually go on and become a cinema and drama teacher at a high school. Unfortunately she did pass away
McLean's name became common with bad career moves. I love the guy, but he jumped the gun and Left MASH way before his star power credibility was assured. Such a shame.
John Pfeiffer Unfortunately I have to agree. He is a very likeable character.
John Pfeiffer I told my father that he should have returned to MASH after this show was canceled and and he said, he couldn't return to MASH because his character died, you can't come back
Twin brother? Dream sequence? Flash back? If he did want back and they wouldn't let him back, that would have been mean, vindictive and evil.
Yikes. I'll watch it again when I'm drinking.
This is great and funny, I really like it, ppl should of gave it more time, mash almost got cancelled too but they gave it time
Or shows that came back for season two completely retooled, with different cast, different story line, etc. For example, season two of that Bob Newhart show called "Bob", which like this show I didn't even know existed until recently. Of course, the retooled "Bob" crashed and burned in season two regardless of the complete overhaul, so who knows.
@@TS-ef2gvthe thing about Bob’s sitcom in 1993 is that it was quite GOOD. And they retooled and added Betty White. It’s fun to watch.
McLean probably made the worst career decision in TV history by leaving MASH. This is just inferior TV.
Besides MASH, this show was the greatest show of the 70’s!!
wow .. i was 14 when this was on ... nicely done.
The opening tune (after the Doritos ad) is slightly reminiscent of Andre' Cymone's "Kelly's Eyes" from six years after...
theme song by the legendary Paul Williams
I think people spend too much time comparing it to his work on M*A*S*H and not enough time analyzing it for what it is.
For what it is, I think it's a good start, I'd have loved to see more.
Paul Williams theme...yea
Just where the hell is my mid-season replacement show? It's a hit!
Darrin Rychlak Keep in mind that in the same year, Three’s Company came on as a mid-season replacement for ABC. NBC was in the running for the show, but passed, and took this instead. Three’s Company became the highest rated sitcom for any mid-season replacement at the time. So not all mid-season shows are a waste of air time.
@@cityhawk John Ritter was quite talented but that darn Mr. Roper stole the show.
@@djrychlak4443joyce de witt was my favorite! Always will be!!
Should’ve stuck it out with MASH and do movies on the side with Woody Allen
God this is worse than I thought
The Old Spice ad at 15:30 utilizes the same music they use in 2023, but nowadays it is whistled, not orchestrated.
That canned laughter
MOnty Hall owned this show and said in an interview Mclean was tough to work with. Mclean later worked with MOnty's daughter JOanna Gleason on Hello Larry.
I remember Joanna Gleason on Hello, Larry, but did not know that she was Monty Hall's daughter. The only other people I remember from the show were Meadowlark Lemon and Kim Richards.
I _think_ I am remembering correctly.
Kim Richards was yummy back then.
No way. Not that I don't believe YOU. I always heard that people really liked working with him.
@@Bigbadwhitecracker WHAT? in '76 she would have been about 10!!!
@@Bigbadwhitecracker Maksugar is this you?!!
2:19 - hey, it's Avery Schreiber!
They don’t Show what happens with the Samsonite suitcase once they reach the curb! Likely since it’s cumbersome having to drop it, reposition and then lift by the handle instead of the pull bar
He should have never left MASH.
McLean Stevenson is just terrible but i left thumbs-up because it was posted and bad television is fascinating to watch
Can't buy Primatene anymore.
Is that Sam Waterson (The Killing Fields) in the Samsonite commercial at 1:45?
Different strokes 2019? 2020? 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
@19:20 the mic comes into view.
Is that Paul Williams doing the theme song ?
Yes, it sure is Paul Williams.
The son's combover is slipping.
Can c why this show bombed....McLean...just surrounded by horrific acting....
It bombed because it was put in a terrible time slot directly competing agents The Bionic Women and All in the Family. The show was not bad at all it was very funny it should have been moved to another more favorable time slot would have gave it the edge that it needed with the views .
You mean to tell me that Mac couldn't see that Lenny's hands were empty when Mac found him going through his stuff? No gun.
He did the ol' finger-gun-in-the-pocket trick.
YES! Did the spot producer tell Chuck that they'll be shooting the back of his head? Marv's rug looks bad!
Good lord! I never even heard of this show before. but then i was about 7 years old when it remiered. he was better on MASH. and that little boy is just awful. Loved seeing the commercials, though.
Wow this hurts to watch 😬
What was the actress who played his wife also the voice of Betty Rubble?
+Randy Craig Barbara Stuart is her name. She also played Sgt. Carter's girlfriend on Gomer Pyle U.S.M.C.
And, she was married to Dick Gautier, famous for playing Hymie the Robot on Get Smart, before she realized he was already in love with someone else- himself!
The actress who played his wife was indeed Barbara Stuart. The voice of Betty Rubble was Bea Benaderet. She was best known as Kate Bradley in Petticoat Junction.
The actress playing the wife in this is terrible. Really awful.
26:14 This green PEE tastes home made. lol
26:18 is that Maree Cheatham in the Lipton Cuppa Soup commercial?
*Is that Alice (Anne B Davies)...*
Who's the guy with the mustache (2:20) in the Doritos ad? I feel like I've seen him do comedy roles elsewhere.
Avery Schreiber.
@@TheMediaHoarder Thanks! I guess I must have seen him on The Muppet Show or something like that. His exasperated expressions remind me of Oliver Hardy.
This is like a watered-down, dumbed-down All in the Family. In fact, it IS. The son Chris is Meathead without the strong convictions, the daughter Janet is Gloria, Mac's wife is a slightly less befuddled Edith, and Mac is a calmer, less vulgar, less rounded and less funny Archie. These are NOT the days.
I take it you're not familiar with All in the Family?
what are you talking about? all in the family was as funny as a funny bone. nothing funny about an old racist bigot except when he got clowned by bea arthur Betty Garrett and Sherman Hemsley. then there's a ditzy edith bunker Jean stapleton. if anything that show should Have gotten the axe. SMH.
Either you've never seen All in the Family or you didn't watch this show because this is nothing like All in the Family.
It was one of the most applauded, groundbreaking sitcoms ever made that changed American television forever. Without All in the Family, we wouldn't have Married With Children, The Simpsons, Family Guy, and all that. But judging by your comment, you're just an unintelligent millennial who wouldn't understand All in the Family. Go watch Big Bang Theory, you freakin' nerd.
Hello Mac?
Hello Larry?
Hmmmmmmm
He's from mash TV show
McLean could have used a good director.
Alan Myerson directed the movie Private Lessons in 1980.
They took a funny actor and threw him into a stock sitcom with cliched characters. McLean is getting in plenty of laughs, but he has so little material to work with. I know it's only the first episode, but right off the bat we can tell these characters are cliche, shallow and one-dimensional. Should've made Mac a bachelor in the city with his live-in grandmother. Yeah, she's the only other amusing character on this "show".
Stevenson always played the bumbling awkward father.
HE SHOULD HAVE NEVER LET MASH.
True, but then we never would've gotten Colonel Potter.
ExplorerDS6789
But colonel Blake was still better.
Yes, a huge mistake for McLean to go from a dream role that won him a Golden Globe to this dud and other duds to follow. Although, I did watch Hello Larry back in 1979 because I was a huge fan of Diff"rent Strokes.
I agree. Colonel Potter was good but Lt. Colonel Henry Blake was better.
...and Shelley Long shouldn't have left CHEERS
What happened to Gary Gilmore? Death by firing squad or appeal?
Gary Gilmore was executed by firing squad in January 1977.
That plane crash took Maclean’s career! Turned it into a train wreck!
Is the daughter janet from threes company kind of looks like her yet doesnt
God I miss Sinex
And just like Hello Larry a total Failure
But Hello Larry lasted two seasons.
