  • "Allowing for the fact there's a lot of fraud, a lot of delusion, a lot of wishful thinking... there still is a hard core of something." - Tony Cornell.
Nationwide's James Hogg follows paranormal investigators on the hunt for poltergeists. He meets psychical researcher Tony Cornell, who has been investigating paranormal incidents for over 30 years. Cornell is a Cambridge graduate, whose interest in the paranormal was piqued when he was stationed as a Naval Officer in India. He has investigated hundreds of alleged hauntings, with no success. He and two physics graduates are currently investigating a chest of drawers that has been at the centre of alleged poltergeist activity.
David Berglas is a practising magician, but also a trained psychotherapist and the Vice-Chairman of the Committee for Scientific Investigation into claims of the Paranormal. He demonstrates some of the ways that people can deceive investigators, and explains how often the simplest explanation turns out to be the truth.
James then speaks to Dr Alan Gauld, who has written a book on poltergeists with Cornell, and often investigates phenomenon alongside him. Gauld is particularly stumped by a recent case involving a loud, persistent banging emanating from a young boys' bedroom. The banging has been heard even when the child isn't in the room, and Dr Gauld has gone as far as taking up the floorboards in an attempt to uncover the source.
Gauld and Cornell have now purchased the 'haunted' chest of drawers, in order to wire it up to various electronic gizmos - including a Sinclair Spectrum and several cameras - so if the chest of drawers moves of its own accord, they'll spot it.
After 30 years with no confirmed ghost sightings, what keeps Cornell and Gauld going?
Clip taken from Nationwide, originally broadcast on BBC One, Thursday 17 March, 1983.

My friends grandfather passed away and he moved into the house while he cleaned up the place. The first day,he heard someone walk down the porch(it has a wrap around porch)to the front door and a knock at the door.Every time he answered, no one was there. He told me about it and twice while i was sitting in their kitchen i heard the heavy foot steps up to the door,a loud series of knocks at the door and no one was anywhere even near the house. He said it happened at odd times throughout the day and night. His girlfriend moved in with him and more noises started in the basement.Loud banging and one night he thought someone broke in because it sounded like a hutch with dishes that was in basement had been pushed over. They left the next day.His mother tried going over to get some things from the house but the footsteps on the porch and the door knocking scared her so bad she wont go back.To me it was interesting, not scary. Both times I heard the footsteps and knocking I answered the door and walked around the entire house trying to figure out what it was.Still don't know what it was but it made me think a lot.

I was in the papers in the 1970s in Ireland for some ongoing ghost issues in our farmhouse. We first noticed various banging and rumblings in 1977, culminating in what I can only describe as “communication” with the ghost, who would rap for attention - one rap for yes, 2 raps for no. There was a vast array of different sightings, including one of Oliver Cromwell in my bedroom, witnessed by 3 independent people including a policeman. He muttered “when will they come….when will they come” whilst pointing south east. Another time we saw a phantom headless dog in our garden, and also lit candles appeared in our apple tree. Eventually the farmhouse burned down in the 1980s.

About a month after my nan died I'd hear her voice, actually hear it, outside the back of the house and it would terrify as well as well as comfort me. That was until I happend to take the rubbish out early one morning and there was a cat sitting in an old bucket, he started "crying" and it was almost an exact mimic of my nan's voice saying my "hello ". The cat did it twice more, saw me and darted off! Mystery solved, kind of sad there was a logical explanation but relieved I wasn't going bonkers!
