The VW T3 was one of the safest Vans of its time. It has special columns in the front end of the structur to absorb energy and to protect the passengers. In the 80ths the german ADAC has tested several vans and compared the results. ALL tested japanese vans had much more deformations than the T3. Occupants would have been severly injured at their legs.
After watching some other VW crash tests I think that this video is about 70km/h but that they have cut out some of the frame and other bearing construction. If you look at the authentic crash tests you can see that the car should be able to handle crashes like this one without imploding.
@Pampabebei Put it on 480p and you can see there is what looks like a massive pile of sand in the back, it clearly isnt new if you look on the higher resoloution , the wall does not crush like the ones in crash tests (to simulate another car) and there are no dummies. I think he could be right, but i don't know for sure.
This is not a crashtest of the car, but the crash test facility itself. The car seen here is overloaded way beyond it's limits and is driver to the wall at higher speed.
As far as i know the crash was done with a normal speed (about 100km/h). The car was old to show how unsafe a (never very safe) car becomes when it has been driven around for 20 Years. The VW T3 is not a very safe car, its weight makes it safer when crashing into other cars. But when crashing into a steadfast wall only the scructure counts, and when it is rusty it becomes even more astable.
@Pentaquin Aber das is schon echt heftig... :S
4. Just look at comparable official crash-tests of this model. It was one of the safest, if not THE safest transporters/vans in this time. It was still "functional" after a crash with 50km/h against stiff barrier. Doors could be opened with no additional tools, cabin still in shape. ...Many ppl out there are so ignorant and just want to believe it is a real crash test at 50km/h ;-) - maybe because they don't like VW? Go buy what you want, but be careful not to die in it.
but it was going at 120kph and the bank (concealed in these videos) was full to the top of heavy cargo. The whole thing was manipulated - you just can't see it in this video
It was at alot more than 50km/h, somewhere theres a video of one being crashed at 70km/h, results were pretty good. As you say, I remember this was a test of an old T3 at high speed and did have ballast, assume inside?.Funny how most people see it and don't realise its alot faster than 50km/h. Easy to fool most people...
no, this test was taken 20yr ago..and at that time it is a brand new VW..but somehow they keep it as a secret..cause they don't want public to know at that time how shitty they are in making cars.
ok fair enough, i got it from someone else's huge rant on another version of this vid from the other side, and that's what they said. i do know that this is not 64 km/h though!
Had to have been 70+mph. I rear-ended a stopped minivan at 45mph, and am still driving the vanagon today.

This sure looks different from toeh other T3 crash video. I wonder what speed this crash was at and how much weight was in the back under that tarp.
Good to hear it. Looks like the test facility is quite powerful.
heavy cargo? i think it looks emty in the end when u see in to it?
it makes total sense... you see the driver is expendable and the ripped off goods in the back are still good and can be sold to other countries.
awesome... theese cars are known to be very solid too
The Ultimate Driving Machine. Literally "ultimate" :D
so it's impossible to detect if the car has a tendence to explode or burn in such conditions?!
They used extra weight to test the crash walls

[strikes that car off the to-buy list]
where did they put the sand? doesn't seem reasonable, the thing about it going to fast seem plausable but where would the put the sand?
YES! At least all my bread wasn't ruined, screw the driver.
You're doing an amazing job of keeping up the american stereotype. Bravo.
i think you are right, i've now seen the official ones too
that mite hurt a bit
¡Madre del amor hermoso!
"Diesel
can't take fire." In conditions of low temperature and low pressure. But my question is: Is there a full tank of fuel in a test car?
This is not a crashtest of the car, but the crash test facility itself. The car seen here is overloaded way beyond it's limits and is driver to the wall at higher speed.
WTF, how fast was it??
It was just the test of the crash test facility.
as long as the cargo makes it ok
the sand is in the back, this one is the pickup truck version!
They put water in the tank to have the same load as in a real situation, but they don't want to burn the place down with petrol. See ADAC site.
LOL they should call that car the POPULATION CONTROLLER
Dammit Volkswagen, the passenger compartment is not supposed to double as a crumple zone!
Volkswagen translating in english sounds like Folkscart :)
what is the speed? that matters pretty fuccin much
for 20years ago this german model/mark was probably better then any other chinese mark

Looks safe

@b3ryLs44b its a 1985 VW T3 doka or Vanagon Transporter
man thats scary. my head hurts ;-)
but it was going at 120kph and the bank (concealed in these videos) was full to the top of heavy cargo.
The whole thing was manipulated - you just can't see it in this video

World's best Volkswagen
Well, at least vegetables survive...
@ETBzocka "maybe on of the safest car for the 80's"
And now it's 2010...
this car was overloaded
HORRIBLE!! Never in all my life doesn't sit in such VW T3 :-)
I think that there's some heavy thing in the back
no, this test was taken 20yr ago..and at that time it is a brand new VW..but somehow they keep it as a secret..cause they don't want public to know at that time how shitty they are in making cars.
ok fair enough, i got it from someone else's huge rant on another version of this vid from the other side, and that's what they said. i do know that this is not 64 km/h though!
The truck lost half its length. XD
holy shit if that was real the people inside the car would die instantly
Oh mein Gott, da will ich nicht drinsitzen
Gdzie jest ten Volksvagen, nie widać go.
Where is this Volksvagen, I can't see it.
the cargo is safe, so its all good
The BEST Car EVER!
Krank!
That will buff out.
Oh, shit... This a special test, what happens if the vehicle is overburdened how where they examined it (with threefold weight)
@Metli94 Yes, German cars has always been known to be safe, thats not a german car for sure, if the speed wasnt like 160 ! :-)
This is a very safe car;)
idiot no
lol jk yes
Just a tip. Keep away from Walls!
This was a BARRIER TEST not a CRASH TEST! The VW was loaded with 2,000 lbs of concrete and launched at 120 km/h!
no buddy alive
Errrr.... i dont know too much about cars or stuff like that.. just Trabi.... but this car is german... or what did you mean???
i saw this vid some months ago on a dontknowwhich vid portal and the title was "chinese copy of german t3"....
least you wouldn't feel it very long.
but where is the sand? At the end of this video u can watch into the loading are and there is nothing !
"At least it didn't catch on fire. lol "
That's because in a test car usually there is no fuel. Full junk!
great
@ETBzocka (5 they weakend the frame by cutting it
i'd say the wall won!
Doubt that mine will go fast enough to achieve any dangerous speeds!!
Ciekawe gdyby w środku siedziały "manekiny" :PPP A tak nawiasem mówiąc to gdzie kabina???? xD
I don´t want to sit in the car!
