The final race of the 2023 Ten saw history made as Eilish McColgan ran a British Record, Alicia Monson bettered the American Record by 10 seconds, and Laura Galvan took down another Mexican Record! Have to love the unbiased local commentators on this race, so blinkered in their view. “ the only person who can beat Monson is Monson” not quite right it seems
well, monson did beat monson's previous PR. What she didnt do was grind out the competition behind her while she was doing all the work.
@@sharonb537 to be fair, McColgan is normally a front-runner setting the pace. So I'd suggest Monson was trying to beat McColgan at her own game and gallantly failed to take the win.
It was all Monson, but then on the last lap Eilish took her apart.

Eilish McColgan breaks the British 10K record on the way to training for the marathon. This is great. Also, Monson ran a fantastic race, taking big time off her personal best and breaking the North American record for 10K ... and she's still just 24 years old.

Many thanks guys. This was a fantastic video, excellent commentary team with lap times details and equally fantastic split screen video. Thanks again. Just a gentle reminder... there is no such thing as "Professional Grade". Once past the various age groups (last one being U 20), the next grade up is "Open Grade". If the athlete is getting paid/sponsored, well good for them but it means nothing to the competition level. If the athlete is "good enough", they get invited to compete or qualify for the big events. Olympics, World Games, Big competitions, National/State/Provincial/Club etc.
All this NCAA/College stuff only applies to the USA. No other Countries even have College/University Track athletic competitions. College/University's in the rest of the world are places of academic study, not playing sports. That's why no other Universities outside the USA offer any Sports scholorships. Yes, there are excellent athletes in your College grade, particularly in sprinting but that is NOT the top grade: that's Open Grade. Also, NCAA College athletes have an age restriction of 18-25 (I think) and middle-long distance athletes normally don't hit their lifetime peaks until late 20's even early 30's.
Meaning runners like Alicia Monson and many other US runners will have a great future ahead of them. Brilliant middle distance youngsters at NCAA level, like Katelyn Tuoy who is 20, have at least 5 years of development before they reach top international standard in Open Grade. Anyway, thanks again for a wonderful video.
Throughout most of the race it was apparent from McColgan's stride that she had a lot more to give, she was kinda doing a hopping/bouncing stride and not really stretching those long legs of hers, it was only at the last moments that she unleashed the true length of her stride. Well done to both, some great battles in the future.
I've always been impressed with her stride. It's not quite what it was due to metal plates in her foot from an old injury but it's still great - her running economy is great even compared to the elites.
Thanks for posting this. The commentary was excellent; and the split screen so we could watch the two leaders and the four chasers should be the standard for all long distance coverage! Really excellent job.

The commentators didn't do their homework. McColgan beat Monson a few years ago in the 10km at the Tokyo Olympics by almost 17 seconds.

I was in the stadium when McColgan's mum won the Commonwealth in Edinburgh. It's uncanny how similar they look and how similar their styles are. There is something rather remarkable in the McColgan family gene pool.
Father, Peter McColgan was a pretty handy runner too.
Eilish is my Birthday buddy and I got engaged on the day she was born and got married on the day her mum won the world 10000m title.

Sensational performances, they didn't just beat records, they smashed them. Looked like there is plenty more to come from this outstanding group of athletes, too. Commentators were excellent, working in difficult conditions, but sadly uncredited here. McColgan looks like she's geared up for something spectacular at the London marathon, so strong for lap after lap, and when she put down the pedal, wow

I am a huge fan of Alicia , as well as Eilish - this was amazing ! I just can’t wait to see if Alicia can sit back / kick out the end !!! I’ll be rewatching it many times! So excited for the upcoming outdoor season ! Also-- Josette made a great choice joining ON imo, she just looks so super determined

Great performance by the top 2. McColgan's going to be in mean marathon form based on this race. Monson took TEN SECONDS off the American record and didn't win. That's incredible.

McColgan stands at 5'11", very tall for a female runner at any distance beyond 3000 meters. However, she only weighs around 120 lbs. so she's lighter than some of the shorter women. Her legs are also long so her stride is long.
Did Monson really take 47 seconds off of her personal best? If that's true she can still improve her time and by plenty.

McColgan never won the Commonwealth games in Scotland she won it in Birmingham England.

Kind of satisfying to see Ailish McColgan finally decide, in her thirties, that she can win. Her mind seems to have finally caught up with her ability. To the lady commentator: the "L" comes before the "G" in McColgan's name. How can you not hear how your partner is pronouncing it?
Respect to all these women running in this event. My PB was 36 minutes for 10k and i thought i was good back in 1984. Now at 62 i couldnt beat 95 seconds for 1 lap. I know its all relative, nevertheless, these are all elite classy athletes. Go girls!

Very low body fat percentage, but I don't think you can run world class times in athletics while being malnourished. They eat more calories than the normal person, they just also burn a lot more calories too.
@@jakobjas4212 - Perhaps. Hopefully true for the majority, but unlikely. Eating disorders run (no pun intended) rampant in that community, amongst other sports.
My best friend was an elite runner and was anorexic for years. Her digestive system is forever damaged. Praise God she survived.

Video quality is atrocious for this day and age. Looked like it was made in 1995. Invite me and my crew (no cost except that I get to post on my channel) and I can bring you into the 21st century (no livestreaming though as affordable technology is not there yet).
Sorry- but I hope the British runner was drug tested after this race. Unfortunately, this kind of performance will always raise the suspicions of those of us who ran track and follow it. And we are to believe that she dropped 48 seconds off her 2022 best time on natural ability at the age of 32-- really? A sad day for all the athletes that ran this clean... and that would include Alicia Monson.

She is the 2022 Commonwealth Games 10,000 metres champion with the Games record, and 5000 metres silver medallist. McColgan is a four-time European Championships medallist, winning silver medals for the 5000 m in 2018 and 10,000 m in 2022, bronze in the 5000 m in 2022, and a bronze for the indoor 3000 metres in 2017. She is the European record holder for the 10 km road race, and the British record holder for the 5000 m, 10,000 m, 5 km and half marathon. She also holds the European best in the 10 miles on the roads.

Yes incredible running and a message to the poster of this comment. Try following World Athletics as well as US Athletics. Amazingly from amongst the 7 billion + people on the planet who are not from US there are some reasonably good athletes turning in reasonably good times and not all of them are on drugs. I’m an Americanphile but one of the great strengths of Americans which is believing everything American is better than everything else in the world is also one of their most annoying traits when it becomes a myopic point of view like this.
great race, congrats to McColgan, Monson, also to Elly Hennes and N Rogers, they still have some years before they peak. Too bad they did this race just before the NCAA indoors championship, it would have been nice to have some collegians run there.
