    Lyrics
That distant blue, thats me and you // It was from there that we all grew // Framed in space, our first home // All those beating hearts // That were made of stone // We were disaster built from flesh and bone // Their bodies made a mountain, a ladder to the stars // When they reached up to the sun, It only left them with scars // All the saints and the sinners will reap what they sow // So they stood back and watched their bitterness grow // They couldn't tell the cure from disease // They no longer knew their want from their need // They fucked the future, forgot the past // Nothing built was built to last // A common ground, now we see // That connected us like the land and the sea // Caught in a web, don't struggle free // This is all we've got, so just let it be // If we save ourselves, we'll feel so small // We'll ask ourselves why we cared at all.

This song.... these lyrics.... bring tears to my eyes.
That distant blue, that's me and you. (meaning the earth, a blue speck in space)
it was from there that we all grew
framed in space, our first home (meaning our origin, earth is our first home before we find another)
all those beating hearts, that were made of stone, (meaning the heartlessness and psychopathy of humanity)
We were disaster built from flesh and bone (meaning our fragile nature can be devastating despite how easily broken)
their bodies made a mountain, a ladder to the stars (meaning through war and suffering we rose to where we are)
when they reached up to the sun, it only left them with scars (meaning are travels and dreams can be harmful, a reference to the story of Icarus)
all the saints and the sinners will reap what they sow (meaning the good and the bad both suffer the consequences of their actions; it doesn't matter who you are, you will always reap the deeds you sow)
so they stood back and watched their bitterness grow (meaning the greed and hate the fuels the fires of humanities anguish)
they couldn't tell the cure from disease (meaning the exploits of humanity have left us blind to the real problems in the world; every solution begs a new problem)
they no longer knew their want from their need (meaning we have lost sight of what truly matters; replaced for personal gain)
they fucked the future, forgot the past (meaning we fail to learn from our mistakes as a species)
nothing built was built to last (meaning everything we do is meant to last as long as we live, that is, a single human lifetime without giving thought to the future)
a common ground, now we see,
that connected us like the land and the sea (we are finally coming to realize that we are all the same and we all matter equally, as does the earth and it's other inhabitants.)
caught in a web, don't struggle free,
this is who we are so just let it be (meaning we are stuck where we are despite our realizations and coming to terms with who we are, a cancer to this planet, only to feel significant)
if we save ourselves we'll feel so small,
and we'll ask ourselves why we cared at all (meaning that if we rise above our flaws and better ourselves and better the world, we will see just how small and insignificant we really are and we'll ask ourselves what we were fighting for all this time).
This is what I read from these lyrics and my eyes fill with tears. For me it's true and I can't see how it is not. But I would rather feel small and insignificant than see our race destroy itself and this beautiful blue marble that we live on. Our first home but maybe not our last, let's hope we can forgive ourselves for what we have done and rise to become better people, a better race. A bettered world to live in.

I think this is a really awesome take on the lyrics. Personally I started to think that this song was about how humanity has selfishly used the resources on the earth and we're starting to destroy it. "They fucked the future, forgot the past" we've been using all the earths resources like natural gas and clean water in huge amounts without any care to how it might affect the earth, or it's inhabitants. We only care how we can make things better for ourselves and now we're slowly starting to realize that the way we're living is having a drastic effect on the world.
I really like your take on the song too and it made me rethink a lot of the lyrics. Either way, \the song is a masterpiece and I wish more people would take a look at the lyrics.

    • @hassi44
      @hassi44 10 років тому +6

Stephen Bishop I agree. I live in Iceland so clean water is pretty much the only water we know :P - But despite our small carbon footprint we are a messy, littering, polluting nation. We don't think enough about the nature we need and instead fixate on the nature we want. A growing green grassy world replaced for a dream of damp grey concrete jungles where the only green is in the ink on bank notes.
If we don't start thinking about the future now, greed will be our downfall. Because if there's one thing I've seen so far regarding how we treat our Terra, it's that those who have the power to really change the world, don't because they will never consider it profitable.
The song really is a masterpiece (comparable to the most genius musicians in history, if we consider today's most popular music) and it really puts a smile on my face to see that people still read and interpret song lyrics, especially in the manner of finding true meaning in them. Most people tend to try and find the "composer's intended" meaning instead of giving the song their own.

This has got to be the most accurate and well thought-out deciphering of the lyrics I've ever read. I sure wish the band had made a commentary version of the whole album.
Face it, we are not worthy of this planet any longer. I love the arrangement of the lyrics, but reading them just really bums me out that even after aeons of human evolution, we have lowered ourselves to rock bottom. Literally every person on earth should hear this song, and just staple that to their minds and realize that this is not a fantasy world. Everything has limits, and we've reached ours a long time ago.

We were disaster built from flesh and bone
I think Its more to " we are the pest in Our 'First Home'. Human are the disaster for the earth."
But its Ok man everyone has their opinion.. and it mine..

A perfect example of how metal can be deep, beautiful and yet still truly heavy at the same time. I love how Sam Carter sings like he means every word and says something really important in his lyrics. The whole ethos behind the band is really inspirational.

Actually the gods they refer to are the celebrities people are so obsessed with,Sam mentioned that a lot in the latest interviews, giving an example of how people are more interested in what Kim Kardashin had for breakfast rather than being focused on the problems of the society.Sure, religion has always been one of their targets, but they target the bad and hypocritical side of it,not god or buddah or whatever.also Tom stated in one of their blog posts that they don't hate religion,or religious people at all

That distant blue, that's me and you.
It was from there that we all grew.
Framed in space, our first home.
All those beating hearts that were made of stone.
We were disaster built from flesh and bone.
Their bodies made a mountain, a ladder to the stars.
When they reached up to the sun, it only left them with scars.
All the saints and the sinners will reap what they sow.
So they stood back and watched their bitterness grow.
They couldn't tell the cure from disease.
They no longer knew their want from their need.
They fucked the future, forgot the past.
Nothing built was built to last.
A common ground, now we see,
That connected us like the land and the sea.
That distant blue, that's me and you.
It was from there that we all grew.
Framed in space, our first home.
All those beating hearts that were made of stone.
We were disaster built from flesh and bone.
Caught in a web, don't struggle free.
This is all we've got, so just let it be.
If we save ourselves, we'll feel so small.
We'll ask ourselves why we cared at all.
Caught in a web, don't struggle free.
This is all we've got, so just let it be.
If we save ourselves, we'll feel so small.

MY GOSH. I'd think Sam would've completely destroyed his vocal chords forever if he didn't make entire albums and tour relentlessly singing like this. This guy's something else.

wow...this band is truly underrated. This is a great album right here Lost Forever // Lost Together. I love music like this. Being a white man in the 21st century, I have few rights and have to face anti-white criticism from many corners of society(i live in the USA btw). Life isn't easy and i've had to deal with many unpleasant things in life but, music by bands like this one and many others helps make it worthwhile
