I went in expecting a good film but WOW, Emma Thompson blew me away, my dad couldn't tell it was Tom Hanks playing Walt Disney, Colin Farrell for a Disney film is a little bit unusual but he put in a great performance, What I understood from the film is that Travers wrote Mary Poppins, she wrote it so she could do in a book what she couldn't do as a child, save her father, Above everything it's a 95/100 easily for me
I totally agree that it's not a family movie. The three year olds in my theater were running around for the whole movie and were miserable. Even my twelve year old brother is too young for it. It's so good, though!
Well, it is PG-13. While I'm usually not very strict when it comes to the rating system, it is silly for parents to bring little kids to a PG-13 movie. Not just because it may be too much for them to handle, but because they'll likely become bored with it, not understanding the themes, and therefore ruining it for the other viewers.
I watched it when I was thirteen, a few months ago, I cried so much, I'm not like other kids, I need more than just an explosion and a wink like my friends, this film was heartbreaking and yet made me so happy
Don't know about anyone else but I was moved by this review. That's what I've always loved about film, that it can resonate with you so deeply that it's like someone reached in and grabbed your heart, and you can see that here. This film wasn't on my radar but will definitely go to see it.
I really enjoyed the film i thought it was a great mix of humour and emotion the scene where Travers broke down at the premier was very touching plus Paul Giamatti was fantastic. I really hope him and Thompson are nominated I do agree Grace the marketing was/isn't doing it justice.
Grace is always the type to dig through the bs and find what's truly great about a movie! That's why this is always my first stop when checking out movie reviews! And while a was a but skeptic I'm definitely going to watch this movie now! Thanks, Grace!
It is so good to hear that this film is actually very good. I was worried that it would completely white wash the history between P.L. Travers and Walt Disney and make it all light and fluffy. Cant wait to see this now!
My top 10: 1. Forrest Gump 2. Inception 3. 500 Days of Summer 4. Up 5. Moulin Rouge! 6. Les Miserables 7. The Dark Knight 8. The Great Gatsby 9. The Impossible (I hated how much it made me cry, but a fantastic movie) 10. Frozen (I recently saw it and believe it really brought Disney back, it is so good)
Im so excited for this movie. I love Emma as an actress. I was never a huge fan of Mary Poppins but I didn't even know there was a book before the movie!
I plan on seeing this movie with my mom. Both of us agree that it looks like a good movie. And with this information, I'll be a bit more prepared for any possible crying parts.
Oh dear. Grace Randolph LOVED it. Not merely liked it, but LOVED it. This puts me in a dilemma. I was interested in seeing this (love Old Hollywood stuff) but going by her track record, I myself will probably end up either hating it (Great Gatsby) or find it GROSSLY overrated (The Dark Knight). But to be fair, I don't ALWAYS think she's talking out of her ass. I do think that Avatar is a travesty and find Rear Window to be a near perfect work of art. So, there is that. But then again, Gravity and Frozen? AWESOME movies. Yep, talking out of her ass again. What to do......what to do.......
I know what you mean... Her tastes are so opposite! Not that she should like what everybody else likes, but wow! Big advocate for being yourself. I'm just glad I like what I like. Lol!
Oh thank goodness. Even though Mary Poppins came out long before my time, as I've aged I've found it a more and more profound and personal film, and am so glad that this film does the story behind it justice.
Grace, I'm really happy to hear how much you liked this movie. While I may not always agree with your reviews, your opinions and arguments are always backed up and well justified. Mary Poppins, next to The Wizard of Oz, is my favorite movie of all time and I admire both Walt Disney and P.L. Travers so much. I've read all of the Mary Poppins books in addition to some of Travers' other work, and have ready pretty much any material about Walt Disney I can get my hands on, so naturally, I'm extremely excited for this movie. Thanks again James
My tastes often align with Grace's, not all the time, but often. For her to make a complete reversal like this, the movie must have been good. For everyone who argues that she is stubborn and always hates on movies, just take a look at this.
QUESTION. hey grace as you know a lot of movies openings were moved to the Christmas release date, just to name a few that are coming out we have Wolf of Wall street, Saving Mr. Banks, Mandella longs walk to freedom and 47 Ronin all coming out, it just seems so cramped. I understand why a studio would want to bump movies due to the tight oscar race this year but my question is financially isn't just to cramped? and how do you think that will effect their box office performance?
Good job with the review. I was shocked as the film unfolded AND I WAS RIGHT THERE AT THE TIME. In 1964 I stood in line at Grauman's Chinese about one month after the premier. Grew up in LA. I was in show business working for Norman Lear, then worked many years at NBC - which was right next door to Disney. My girlfriend danced in the Disney Christmas parade every year until (can you believe this??) she dumped me and married a rockICON who shall remain nameless! My point. The reviewer think that SHE cried? Oh my. I'm an old man now and I sobbed almost uncontrollably during the film as the dark secrets were exposed. When Mrs. P. L. Travers' father died I was almost inconsolable - and when Walt kept him alive for the movie I was crying out loud again! When Mrs. PL. Travers finally gave up and danced with Don, I cried tears of pure joy!! I cannot say enough about this project. I am waiting for my copy from Amazon.
The only reason I saw Saving Mr. Banks was due to Grace Randolph's recommendations for it when she discussed the upcoming production of Mary Poppins. I was not sure what to expect. From the trailers I did see prior to Beyond the Trailer's references, I did not expect much. Then, once I saw it, I loved it! I then had to see it again with friends, and they loved it! Thanks for your comments, Grace. To be honest, sometimes I will either see or refrain from seeing movies based on your open expressions.... just so you know.
Very true! I'm so glad I saw this movie by myself last week, I cried so much! I loved the relationships between the characters and the scenes in Australia were so beautiful! It's a great film and it leaves you feeling so emotional afterwards which is what a history film should do. PS stay during the credits!
I was soooo relieved when you said "this film is practically perfect in every way"! I've been looking forward to this film for a long time. Tom Hanks is my favorite actor and i really enjoy Emma Thompson as well. Plus i love Disney and i am glad to hear that they were honest with the film and story
My top five films of all time: 10: Gravity 09: Michael Collins 08: Captain Phillips 07: The Polar Express 06: WALL•E 05: Gangs of New York 04: Forrest Gump 03: Slumdog Millionaire 02: Curious C. of Benjamin B. 01: Titanic

Summer Wars 6. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (US) 7. Django Unchained 8. Moonrise Kingdom 9. No Country for Old Men 10. Looper
TheMrTrapatony I agree, it's not very well written, it's more just an eye candy-fest. I do love the score and the suspenseful acting really pulled me in.
***** Yes, I'm looking forward to seeing Saving Mr Banks, American Hustle and The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. Nice picks, Pulp Fiction is one of my dad's all time favourites.
I love this film. The opening gave me goosebumps. I reflect often on my childhood and several experiences I had witnessing the pain my parents went through and the pain it put me through and how it really affects me today and this film captured that very well, with an amazing performance by Colin Farrell. It also made me reflect on the idea of having my own kids. One day, I'd love to have children, but I definitely still need to straighten some things out before I can--I want to be the best father I can to them. And, as an aspiring filmmaker--and of course a big fan of "Mary Poppins"--it was very interesting to see the process of making the film, with the battle of movie vs. source material.
I'm glad to hear despite your thoughts on the trailer, it is actually much better than what the trailers it was making it out to be. I was hoping it would be good, but the fact the director also directed the Blind Side which I thought was really bland and really over-rated, made me had some fears. But now, it's one I definitely want to check out in theaters! I'm not sure if it'll top Frozen as my favorite movie of the year, but I can't wait to see it regardless. Thanks Grace. :)

Hi Grace! Im from Mexico, and I loved the movie, it was incredibly touching and Emma was fantastic. Sadly, this movie didnt stay long in cinemas here, and the marketing was terribly bad. Here it was called "El sueño de Walt" like "Walt's dream" and that was very misleading, many people thought it was a biography of Walt... Love your show and the reviews, youre amazing, cheers!
You're totally right Grace. When the movie started I didn't think it was going to be very good. I thought it would be a fun and cheese 3 star movie. On the 2nd act it started to get better, the comedy was great, and the childhood flashbacks started to make sense and to get more intense. At the end I loved it and I gave it 5 stars. And YES! Emma Thompson definitely needs to get the Oscar!
Your review is quite on point and you say it very eloquently. Even several years later I can't stop watching it over and over because I enjoyed so much
I just saw it and I don't think I had the same personal experience you did, but I do think it isn't necessary a family film. I especially agree with you about Emma Thompson. I thought she was phenomenal as well.
I loved the fact that through watching this movie that I knew a lot about him. he scene that really gave me that sense that Walt Disney was really human was when he was explaining to Mrs.Travers that several studios wanted to take that character away from him and him declining. Watching that I grew respect and knew that feeling why he didn't want to let go. He already lost Oswald the Luck Rabbit to Universal and he didn't want to go through the same thing twice.
Hi Grace I've seen the whole movie back in august for dubbing purpose (french Canadian) and I fell in love with colin within the first 5 minutes (He usually leaves me very cold) I love to hate Emma in her character... the story about Spoonful of Sugar is true. I guess for the purpose for this movie, they have played a bit with chronological event... for example some of the drawings on the board are not supposed to be there... because some cast members and designers weren't hired at the time of those pre-production meetings in 61. I cried for "Feed the Birds" which is the ultimate favorite song to Walt.. and i cried even more at "Let's go fly a kite!" As I said before.. there is NOT A SCENE OR A DIALOGUE LINE THAT IS NOT UNUSEFUL... No filler... I agree with you Grace that it is not a family movie.. there's some scenes that you don't want kids to see!!! But it is still done in good taste!! I was a bit disappointed by the last scene just before the "Premiere" I don't know the reason for it but I've found that Emma wasn't able to make me beleive that she was Pamela anymore... the emotions played in that scene was very cheesy..and didn't fit anymore the character. Thanks tho the lady who wrote the book about Travers . to become that movie that is "Saving Mr. Banks" Or could it be "Saving the promise of Walt to his little girl"? or "Saving Mrs Travers from bankrupcy!" LOL... you'll understand after seeing the movie!!!
WHOA! I was literally *stunned* for a moment there by Grace's reaction, I was all-set to hear her rant about this film, after all she had been complaining about it all year. But, I'm glad it turned out to fulfill her desires (for once ;) ) I guess a studio CAN do an expose on itself eh?
Finally getting around to seeing this wonderful film, and all I have to say is WOW. I'm not usually one to cry when watching a movie, but the waterworks were open with this one. The scene that hit me first was when Travers hands Ralph the list of people who made it with disabilities, and then of course the premier scene. It hit me in the heart and touched me on a personal level that very, very few movies have been able to do.
Wow ! You are saying that this film took PL Traver & Walt Disney fight over the Mary Poppins into something like " Driving Miss Daisy" ? Yeah , you ae right abou this trailer. A bit catchy!? I didn't think of this film the way you explain from watching this trailer.
Hey Grace, one thing you didn't touch on in the review that you had earlier criticized, how well do you think Tom Hanks pulled off Walt Disney? I know he has a substantially smaller role than the trailer suggests, but just wanted to know your thoughts as a Disney fan. :)
This was a GREAT film, beautifully excellent in every possible way. I'm twelve though and I saw it with my twelve year old friend and we both loved and respected it as much as any adult I'm sure.
Speaking of best picture contenders, Grace, can you do another list for your Oscar predictions. Just your own, like people to be nominated in acting categories, screenplay, and the actual predictions for best picture?
I'm in your camp. I didn't have high expectations, but I really liked this movie. One of my favourites of this year too (although I'm still working on my list). I think all actors were superb (I really liked Paul Giamatti's character here). Emma Thompson would also be my pick for the Oscars.
I won't be out here until February or so (unfortunately) but I'm so relieved you like it! I think the main idea of the film is lovely and now that you like it, I'm sure I will too!
I saw this yesterday and loved the heck out of this movie. It was soo good! Everyone was great! It showed me that Colin Farrrell could act and had range and that Emma Thompson continues to be my favorite actress. So good!
I am so excited for this movie, and now am so glad that Grace finds it worth my time.it does look like a movie where Walt saves a pompous English lady from being cranky after a hard life and she learns the wonder he offers the children of the world, and that would be a good story, learning the impact her books had on kids who misunderstand their parents. But if this movie focuses on the parents, then it would make so much more unique.
Dear Grace, would you please grace us with a review of your "Edge of Tomorrow" trailer review? Also as a QUEST?ON OF THE DAY: Is Tom Cruise under-appreciated as one of the best action movie actors of all time. He brings so much gravitas, emotion, power and raw acting skills to your other-wise run-of-the-mill summer popcorn flick. He is ageing, gracefully (see what I did there), where do you think he ranks and what is the future for this great actor?
Wow, I wasn't sure what i would think about this movie. I agreed with your original opinion of the trailer. I'm looking forward to see it now, sounds more and more like the kind of movies i prefer to see
P.L. Travers is a stage name at all, since her Real name is Helen Lyndon Goff.. Also, her fathers full name is Travers Robert Goff... Also, at least try to get the names right...
Great review. I can't think offhand of another couple of movies that showed the hollywood movie of a film and then the "real life" process of the transformation of the book. Two other such movies probably exist but I can't really think of them. Also...so hard to show the passion of writers sometimes, especially writers from another time. This sounds like a good bookend to Mary Poppins, as you said. Thanks.
I liked it as well. By the end the film really grew on me. The time flipping was annoying at first but it gelled at the end. Some themes are very adult but I think families can still enjoy it together for the comedic moments. It was a very good and interesting film.
Agree w/ you on praising this fine film, which I just caught up with. Also want to do a shout out for Colin Farrell & Annie Rose Buckley as the father/daughter in the Australian outback. It wasn't so much flashbacks as a parallel story interwoven with the later one being told.
I definitely agree with you Grace, the ad campaign was very misleading although I'm quite glad that the film ended up being different to what was presented in the trailers. I found the film to be very personal, I actually ended up watching it on my own and I'm happy that I did because I was able to connect with it more (I know that sounds weird). I have a new favourite film and I will be watching it again!
Not a family film at all. I've seen it twice and was choked up both times. My favorite movie of the year. I have seen a ton of movies & still have to see Her, Philomena, Dallas BC, & Nebraska, and no doubt they'll all be good, but Saving Mr. Banks will probably still be my favorite.
I really did like this movie. It's was great and powerful. I don't really get emotional about movie but I actually cried during this movie. This movie is worth the watch. It's so good.
Finally got round to watching this film today and my goodness, absolutely speechless! A perfect film which over flows with class and emotion! Thank you for sharing this film throughout your videos!
Review left me confused regarding what movie is about. A "behind the scenes" making of Mary Poppins? A Travers biopic? Mary Poppins told from a different point of view? You did clear up that the trailer, which focuses on Disney, is not what this film is about.
I'm glad that you liked the film Grace. I will be checking it out due to your infectious enthusiasm for it, but Cate Blanchett has best actress already in her very expensive Gucci bag. Signed sealed delivered. You can book it. I'm never wrong about these things. Death, taxes, and Paul's Oscar Pics are all things that are certainties in life my friend.
I watched it when I was thirteen, a few months ago, I cried so much, I'm not like other kids, I need more than just an explosion and a wink like my friends, this film was heartbreaking and yet made me so happy
Well I'm definitely more interested in this film now but I think it hasn't been marketed correctly all you see in the commercials is Walt Disney and it looks so cheery lol, I think they need to give Emma Thompson her do and had her in the commercial as well just as much is Tom Hanks!
So you are saying that Saving Mr Banks is better than 12 Years A Salve. Yeah right. In 100 years of film, there hasn't been a film like 12 Years A Slave. No film(not even Django Unchained) has captured the horror and brutality of that period. And saying that it is one of the greatest films of all time is completely wrong. Godfather, Shawshank Redemption, Schindlers List are all better than Saving Mr Banks
Should be interesting to see. I had a similar experience when I saw A.I. - thought it was going to be a good sci-fi movie, ended up crying through most of it (except the heavy handed Spielberg carnival crap). Very powerful and caught me off guard.
Very good review grace. Im definitly going to see this movie!! :) It is really clear that you can personally relate to the movie, thank you for sharing that with us :) always a pleasure watching your videos. Greatings from Belgium!
I came back to this video after sometime, and I have to say. The green screen effects in this vid are far more superior to her more recent efforts. Has she changed editor or is she just having quicker turn around times with smaller resolution?
The marketing was all wrong for this film.. Made it look like a mix of a comedy and a Walt documentary.. When it's really not .. In an amazing film that surprised me in so many ways!
I feel like this was a satisfying film all and all. It's not an Oscar contender thu. Much like Devil Wears Prada was a fine film with fine performances but not deserving of any awards buzz. I also feel like the ending could have been more visually dynamic. The film dipped into TV movie territory with how the climax was treated. I loved the film thu and will see it again.
Grace you have regained my absolute trust. Through the whole year you have been bashing Disney a lot including this movie and Frozen wich I though was wonderful. With all that I have began to not like your judgment since you were making statements that were often very untrue and really bashing my most Favourite thing, Disney. But then you make this video. I now again trust your judgement. It really does mean to me that you loved this movie as much as to call the best movie of the year. Although I myself have not seen it yet but I am DYING TO SEE IT SO MUCH (even got mary poppins on blu ray today) I know it wil probably be my favourite of the year as well. Walt Disney is my absolute most favourite person and a movie about a part of his life is what I have been waiting for. So I really really like that you loved this movie and this review has changed all of my views that I had of you this year and I look forward to many many more years to getting my movie news from you. Thank you so much and continue being amazing.

I knew you were going to love this film, Grace. I had a feeling it was going to sweep you off your feet.
My top 10:
1. Forrest Gump
2. Inception
3. 500 Days of Summer
4. Up
5. Moulin Rouge!
6. Les Miserables
7. The Dark Knight
8. The Great Gatsby
9. The Impossible (I hated how much it made me cry, but a fantastic movie)
10. Frozen (I recently saw it and believe it really brought Disney back, it is so good)
The question is whether enough people share your views Grace and make this an Oscar contender.
Every time I hear "let's go fly a kite" it brings a tear to my eye

😱 Omg Grace ten years ago 🥰👍
Oh wow, glad it helped your dad. 🙏
Very excited to see this!
Wow ! You are saying that this film took PL Traver & Walt Disney fight over the Mary Poppins into something like " Driving Miss Daisy" ? Yeah , you ae right abou this trailer. A bit catchy!? I didn't think of this film the way you explain from watching this trailer.
I agree completely! It was a beautiful film. I thought I would like it because of the cast, but I loved it!
The director also did the blind side which I thought was the best movie of that year
Hey Grace, one thing you didn't touch on in the review that you had earlier criticized, how well do you think Tom Hanks pulled off Walt Disney? I know he has a substantially smaller role than the trailer suggests, but just wanted to know your thoughts as a Disney fan. :)
This was a GREAT film, beautifully excellent in every possible way. I'm twelve though and I saw it with my twelve year old friend and we both loved and respected it as much as any adult I'm sure.
My Top 3 Films
1. The Fountain
2. Fight Club
3. Sin City
Loved that it switched between comedy and drama... great film, Colun Farrel is great and that girl ( Ginty) is fenomenal too.....
Yes, it was an intensely moving experience on so many levels - especially for anyone with a deep passion for cinema and art. I loved it.
I think the main idea of the film is lovely and now that you like it, I'm sure I will too!
whats your opinion on colin farrell´s performance??
I'm glad that this film turns out to be PERFECT! Not good but PERFECT! :)
I saw this yesterday and loved the heck out of this movie. It was soo good! Everyone was great! It showed me that Colin Farrrell could act and had range and that Emma Thompson continues to be my favorite actress. So good!
I saw it when I was 10 and it was really sad, but I was know where near crying.
Saving Mr. Banks was awesome and Tom Hanks as Walt Disney was amazing and Emma Thompson as P.L. Travers was also amazing
Pass.
Movies with Tom Hanks are hit or miss with me. The only movie i liked him in was Saving Private Ryan.
Dear Grace, would you please grace us with a review of your "Edge of Tomorrow" trailer review?
Also as a QUEST?ON OF THE DAY:
Is Tom Cruise under-appreciated as one of the best action movie actors of all time. He brings so much gravitas, emotion, power and raw acting skills to your other-wise run-of-the-mill summer popcorn flick. He is ageing, gracefully (see what I did there), where do you think he ranks and what is the future for this great actor?
Definitely do a edge of tomorrow trailer review!!
Wow, I wasn't sure what i would think about this movie. I agreed with your original opinion of the trailer. I'm looking forward to see it now, sounds more and more like the kind of movies i prefer to see
PL Traverse fathers last name was Goff. She changed it to traverse to sound more English and less Australian.
Thanks.
By the marketing I thought it was a smart comedy/drama. Is that correct?
I have a new favourite film and I will be watching it again!
wow, Gatsby is currently my favorite film of the year. Will have to see if this knocks it down lol
Tom Hanks! He is one of my favorite actors! I really want to watch this movie!
Now I really want to see this movie. I mean, I wanted to see it before but now I'm just so psyched.
'Saving Mr. Banks' it's a very touching movie with amazing actors and story.
It has everything what a good movie needs actually!
I want to see this in theatres. Great review Grace.
Ohh my God Grace,
It’s been awhile
I love and prefer the new format
Should be interesting to see. I had a similar experience when I saw A.I. - thought it was going to be a good sci-fi movie, ended up crying through most of it (except the heavy handed Spielberg carnival crap). Very powerful and caught me off guard.
The minute I heard Tom Hanks was going to play Walt Disney, I knew this movie would be a winner. :)
Grace are you going to do a Top 10 movies of 2013 ?
Very good review grace. Im definitly going to see this movie!! :) It is really clear that you can personally relate to the movie, thank you for sharing that with us :) always a pleasure watching your videos. Greatings from Belgium!
When Ginty says.... "I dropped the pears" :-(
The acting in this movue was amazing , I sat in stunned silence,
Now I have to see this movie.
this is the best film I have ever seen. u must see this film if you haven't already. I would say Saving Mr.Banks is the best film ever for me.
I came back to this video after sometime, and I have to say. The green screen effects in this vid are far more superior to her more recent efforts. Has she changed editor or is she just having quicker turn around times with smaller resolution?
I just saw it & it made me cry.
The marketing was all wrong for this film.. Made it look like a mix of a comedy and a Walt documentary.. When it's really not .. In an amazing film that surprised me in so many ways!
Well im 11, and I think it cam be for both. I found myself crying too. Its sad and funny. I completely enjoyed the film.
IM SOOOO EXCITED NOW
Funny she said it's like a movie you want to see by yourself. I saw it on my own haha
I agree with you the marketing is all wrong but I loved the movie it is one of my favorite movies of the year great review
Absolutely adored this film, and had to come back to watch your review after recent mary Poppins returns trailers.
WOW I want to see this so badly! But saw Frozen instead and I loved it!!
I'm dying to see this film... Saving-Mr-Banks
I was not interested in seeing it but now I can't wait to go see it. Peeked my interest :)
They aren't even playing this in my country! What do I have to do!?
