Great vid. I've noticed a lot of these dash cams have poor security like no secure length passwords or the actual cam modules can be attacked using the cars bluetooth.
I had one of these years ago. I really liked it and was sad when the cell connectivity feature died while they were going bankrupt.
Im going to check out your newer video on this but I might get a new unit, but I just wish dash cams in general had better cameras in general. I'd be willing to play decent money for a quality camera that can capture important details, like license plate numbers from hit and runs.
Have you found anything that matches great camera quality? I feel the same way. Most pictures and videos I see don't pick up the license plate
@@motavice3499 I have not, but it does seem that in the last year, some new cameras hit the market with better light sensors from Sony. I'm eyeing the Viofo A229 Pro but haven't pulled the trigger on it yet

Hope you'll consider creating a better youtube thumbnail for your videos because You do have a beast VoiceOver audio in your videos. You have good content as well. you'll get it free on template in some graphic design websites ex. maybe CANVA. Maybe you can check your time duration and standard intro too. Hi all. I have been searching for a camera that I can use to live stream my dogs inside of my RV from my phone when I go in a restaurant or grocery store.
Also one that dont activate a bright LED light that will blind my dogs. I have a waggle temperature moniter but would like to actually see them. No need for video storage.

Great Video! Yours shows its detecting movement outside the car.. According to Owl they say it will not detect motion movement outside the car. Can you clear this up for me please. thank you !
I think the motion detection is in the car via camera sensors (interior facing) which can detect interior and also part of exterior through the windows from inside facing out to the rear. I ended up returning my Owl cam so Ican test this anymore + firmware can change at any moment too. It wouldn't be the first time a company removed features from a camera.
As far as the obd plug in, is the camera on 24/7 and if so does it drain your battery?
Yes it will drain 24/7 but will cutoff before it drains too much to start (the car). Owlcam also won’t tell you it shutdown due to lower voltage. I also tried powering via usb-c regular but that won’t work. I haven’t looked into the voltage requirements or other connectivity to hack it, especially now that I’ve decided it won’t work the best for me. My search continues. I will post an update to the first impressions review with some thoughts. Thanks.
Thanks for the video. I've been trying to find a security / notification solution. Something that will alert us if there is movement in the car and we can scream at them as a deterrent. I found the Owlcam first but then researched the same history you mentioned. I just found the Nexar One, have you experimented with those at all?
I haven't tried the Nexar One. It doesn't appear that you can jump in and yell at them though (with a speaerphone capability). I like that the monthly fee is $9.95, but that can change at any time and I also wish we knew what network it runs off of (no use if coverage is poor). So far I'm pretty satisfied with the Owlcam, except for the fee and a few other small details which I may do a followup video on.
I read on their site ATT and TMobile for network access. It’s significantly bigger than the Owlcam as it requires an extra module to be connected for both the 4G connectivity and the internal cam. It also doesn’t require the OBDII Port for power.
Honestly at this point these two options seem like best effort for notification and not reliable for peace of mind. I’m wondering if it would be best to just use a cheaper one that does WiFi and just ensuring my access point is close enough to connect since I street park close to the house.
Open to any other ideas as I really just want the parking monitor and notification functionality.
@@georgeski It would be great to know the actual power consumption of the device - that'd be my big one. Owlcam doesn't technically have to be connected to OBDII port either, its just the easiest way to ensure constant power. I've used my Blackvue 900 series ( amzn.to/3O3laZX ) for 2 years now and it also can do what the Nexar One does. You can add the optional LTE module as well and you can choose whatever provider you want that is compatible (also Tmobile, ATT, etc). But I use it via Wifi to house, and also mobile hotspot. The owlcam is refreshing because I only have to worry about one device, and it's all integrated but I'm limited to AT&T and it cannot connect to a wifi hotspot for its cloud features. Did you watch my garmin multicam video? That's cheapest, with cloud and live capability, decent wifi to house range, but no 4K.

I’m with you, I’d rather it all be a single unit. But I’m ok with no LTE, even though I’m in a great ATT coverage area. It’s our city that’s been getting hit a lot lately for Kia’s right in broad daylight. Even though mine is not susceptible to the tick tok/ UA-cam published hacks, they’ve still tried it and damaged the steering and knee airbag areas.
So I really just need to be notified on proximity breech or movement inside since they’ve gotten smart on removing windows without setting off the alarm.
i actually just returned the Nexar One because a-lot of the features aren't available as of yet like parking sensitivity and gravity sensitivity. Their customer service told me they dont have a release date either. Also the camera is WAY over priced to be as glitching and delayed as it is. Im going to give owl cam a shot because its about half the price. Note you have to pay for the cabin camera, connectivity, AND A SUBSCRIPTION with the nexar.
I'm okay with owlcam but i really really hate the email only tech and customer service. no more phone calls available. I'm unable to get mine working again. a months worth of emails and still dead in the water. I really want to get my owlcam working again but it looks like I'm shopping for something else.
What happened to your Owlcam and what version? Under warranty?
@@MikeMu I purchased two of them right before owlcam dissolved, I renewed with the new company that took over and then something happened and I no longer had a subscription. I renewed a new subscription and I tried to call the new owlcam and they only have email as a way to resolve anything and its been a broken record with this people. I'm really trying to keep owlcam as a solution but this month of emailing back and forth has really been a pain. I guess i have no choice but to find another LTE Solution because I'm throwing in the towel.
The price is why the company didn't do well.
i just got this camera today , and i installed it , but when i turn off the car and walk away it does not alert me when it’s bumped. and i don’t see the green light that normals glows while i’m away. i need help with that?
What car did you install it in?
I would imagine it didn't sell well because it's huge and not thought out well. Who wants this massive device sticking up on your dash like some install this thing. Why do you need a tiny screen showing you what your eyes can see. Just make it a Camera. Not a damn screen too.
I guess my biggest question is will this drain my battery making me have to jump my car.
It stops at a safe voltage threshold so that you can start your car. If you leave it parked for weeks on end you should have plans to keep your car trickle charged or solar charged. I have not had issues after a week of not driving (with a relatively newer battery), but YMMV. Always keep a spare jump starting battery just in case.
@@MikeMu ill be driving it everyday. Real talk i just desperately need a camera for security because someone smashed my window and tried to steal my car the other day...
@@Shoop701 ok these may just be a deterrent. For that it definitely stands out from front facing side and there is a chance of they are stupid enough to stick around you’d be able to do something about it. One main thing is make sure you have AT&T coverage. Also… Amazon is coming out with their version next month: amzn.to/3iSNMfd

@@Shoop701 of course. Now nobody has a unit to review yet. But supposedly one of the original Owlcam guys joined Amazon’s Ring division to bring it to market. I like that it’s cheaper monthly.

Mike Mu .. I bought this last year of Oct 2022 and I put it away in a cabinet & life got hectic & I actually forgot about it. Come to find out that the yearly subscription I paid for actually starts the day you PURCHASE the dash cam. I just sent them an email last week asking for credit & they denied it and basically state that even if the camera has not been set up or connected, subscription is still activated at time of purchase. That sucks. So now I only have 4 months of use before Oct that I paid nearly 200 dollars for & now they are gonna automatically charge my card another 190 in Oct 2023. Greedy company
Sorry man. I feel for you. I wish companies would just do the right thing. Maybe ask again, to see if they can do anything else for you - maybe a few more extra months at least.

We have self driving tech in car. The car drives better than we do.
It doesn't have Night vision ✨ !!!
It does for interior. You show up in black and white. Exterior most don’t have that unfortunately.
@@MikeMu Yeah,I understand the camera has lights,that comes inside of the car,but that's not night vision. I mean the infrared that allows you to see outside of the car after dark. After all these years this camera should have infrared added to it. Thanks!
The problem with that is the infrared lights has to be outside the windshield. Otherwise you will see nothing but reflection. Yes, I wish there was a good solution on the market for windshield dashcams. Otherwise the cameras have to be outside or integrated such that the reflection from windshield wont interfere with the lens/sensor combination.
I was one of their $1,000 winners 4 years ago. They went out of business and screwed owners over.
I read about that. They 'sold out' their customers to someone else. Its part of business but it certainly doesn't hurt any less.
They went bankrupt and were bought out. It was not an intentional process.
People don't need yet another monthly payment to add to their list; that's why they failed.
You dont need a monthly plan to use this camera, just for the online features. 4G aint free.

@@norcalandrew You just cancel the plan after checkout. You can connect directly with wifi.
This cam is not worth the price
