Songs like this, artists like this, pure music, gives me a sense of being. As a music major, where I learn to break down music and beat rules and standards into my head, where I'm forced to analyze music to the point where it's not magic anymore... music like this gives me a glimpse of what I used to feel. It reminds me that the world is dark and mysterious, but the light is still there. We just have to be reminded every once and a while. Thank you.
Godspeed is a great,"new" band... love the atmosphere, the sounds, the ideas... can imagine a concert in a cave, w/ lights cutting thru smoke, a dim stage, and dim hall, and the silhouettes of the band playing...
This is kind of what some of the early shows at their Montreal space were like. Dark, smoky. Film loops playing on fabrics falling from the ceiling. The audience hushed under a spell watching musical drama unfurl in front of them, the climaxes vibrating their very souls into ecstasy.
I was always interested about the album cover for Slow Riot for new zero kanada but I never really paid close attention to the symbols on the cover, but today I decided to take the cover and put into google translate. My guess was that is was Hebrew, wich was correct. Now for the translation, it read תֹהוּ וָבֹהוּ= “Tohu wa-bohu” wich translates to Chaos. But when i typed the hebrew into google i got a way more interesting result. Turns out תֹהוּ וָבֹהוּ is a biblical phrase found in Genesis 1:2 and that it describes the condition of the Earth immediately before the creation of light in Genesis 1:3. This just adds way more darkness, chaos and depth to the experience of listening to this masterpiece.
is it not possible to just listen......no need to break down or interrupt....just listen...get swept away....godspeed is one of those collectives that can inspire tears or giant shit eating grins....its amazing to me how such talent can slip through the cracks......
city of caterpillar is unbelievable. there is no band at all like them.. They're so talented and original, How can anyone mix post-hardcore and experimental prog/ post-rock so fluently?
When I listen to this, I always feel like I'm waiting for the song to open up at 8:28. It's like listening to Jimi Hendrix tune up for 5-8 minutes, then he blazes through "Little Wing", or something. So much prep work for so little payoff, but my god is the payoff worth it. From 8:22 until the end of the song, it's near perfection.
Naruii ### even better than it was then, I got married, we bought a house, I have a great job. My wife and I are moving to Japan soon and I’m about to self publish my first comic book. And I still listen to Godspeed You! Black Emperor when I’m writing :) thanks for asking, thanks for caring. Hope life is good for you too.
Our Fantasy Life wow thats great i honestly didnt expect you to respond. i just checked out your channel as you have some really well made videos, hope you guys make it big someday.
Brilliant, just brilliant! Never heard this band before and randomly chose this song to get an idea of what they sound like. Man does this song make a great first impression!
The "build up" in this song is like waiting at a bus stop. This group has a great sound, but I don't know if I approve of the fact that I have to wait five minutes for the drums to make their entry. Without momentum, music is more likely to put me to sleep than to perk my interest.
Best show I've ever been to: Behind us, a guy working an old school projector is tangled in lengths of film as he creates visual loops on the fly, and onstage, Godspeed builds gorgeous, teetering walls of sound, covered with the images of people and places long forgotten.
when I dream I vision of life how can anyone match up into this light when love seeps through every soul that bleeds to every second of everything you've ever dreamed when love as a force of power fulfilling its own existence comes down and marries this human experience when shooting stars connect with broken hearts I shall run to the truth for the truth will always follow me
I pretty much just blindly stumbled into this without having any idea what to expect. I have to say, this stuff is really cool! Its like watching the sky collapse.
I have so much respect for GYBE's Music, because society today demands fast music with lyrics. But this, is endearing, amazing, and truly the essence of music.
I have almost lost my love with music before I found post-rock. It started with following links on UA-cam, now i am addicted to music again. GY!BE, EITS, Signal Hill, This will Destroy You. These are all the best example of music and what it's supposed to be, not that mainstream crap the some people like, music should be a love affair. Thats the way i feel about post-rock.
Nalax what about the sacrifices what about them do you want to end up like a selfish leader shut up no, no, NO!!!! *Blazer stabs mograine with the corrupted ash bringer*
when shadow comes to claim our souls some must rise the light of old names in stone, spirits of legend deeds unknown yet never forgotten these are the duranin of honor within and of fear without remember them, when in hope you doubt.
i don't think it's boring at all... maybe the first 5 minutes are essential to create the tension and the other 5 to release it. it keeps you weeping on hold and then delivers chaos. hauntingly beautiful...
@TheJohnstead what are ya talking about man the last 5 to 4 mins is a build up to a dramatic visual that you create in your mind and it sound wonderful
@infinitideagames the episode called our gang, it says this at imdb V As encouragement, one of the parents at the school meeting tells Cleveland "Godspeed You Black Emperor!" That is the name of a Canadian post rock band
i got to say this is probably the most heartbreaking song ever made. its like the soundtrack to suicide. the chords in the beginning that go on for nearly 4 minutes are so brutal one couldnt help but be driven towards the brink of insanity
This song is even better when you listen to it live. The atmosphere is weird and awesome in their concerts. I had an eargasm for real. I wanted to climb on the stage and kiss their hands, their music is awesome and no one can say the opposite, if they do say it it's cuz they're jealous.
This has been my favorite record for close to ten years now. Oddly enough, when someone asks me if I have a favorite song, a favorite guitarist, a favorite artist, etc, I'm at a loss. But Slow Riot For New Zero Kanada is just the perfect EP. I don't think I will ever get sick of it.
Godspeed is far too good to ever be mainstream, which is nice because they are like a gem that a few people discover here and there. They're music is georgeously complex, intense, meloncholy and beautiful. This song, in particular, is as close to perfection a song can be. They really are in a league of their own.
Tohu wa bohu (תֹ֙הוּ֙ וָבֹ֔הוּ) is a Biblical Hebrew phrase found in the Book of Genesis 1:2. It is usually translated "formless and empty," or some variation of the same, and describes the condition of the earth before God said, "Let there be light." --- Je ne peux qu'accueillir et m'incliner devant autant de talent, vision, vérité et amour manifesté dans cette symphonie qui fait echo à ma conscience. BRAVO & THANK YOU !
slow riot is my favourite album ever! (oh well of course, it's an ep, but i consider it like if it was an album ;) btw: I have just posted a live video of gybe! playing moya! unfortunately it's incomplete but the first part is really awesome! enjoy it! :) P.S. In the video info I wrote a summary about godspeed's video we have, I think someone may be interested in it ;)
Such an awesome song. I swear to that GYBE is drug. Normally i do about 80 situps a night, then it starts to hurt. Tonight, switched on some GYBE, did 580 straight, with no pain. So great.
Only recently finally allowed this band into my life. I actually got into Thee Silver Mount Zion Orchestra first... Equally excellent band with some truly astounding albums.
***** I can appreciate that. So no need to apologize. Besides, I'm fairly certain the track is posted somewhere in it's entirety at this point. Though I'm pretty confident anyone who listens to songs that surpass 5 minutes knows the pain of having a track cut short due to any number of reasons after investing the emotion that goes into the crescendo. Hopefully that makes sense. Honestly I'm never sure...
@Lycantroph Truly a medicine, my friend. Depression is the opposite of elation but doensn't necessarily exclude eachother, for me that's what this song is about, the way it builds itself from chaos to clarity, from nothing to perfection, depression to elation, from doubt to hope, and so on.. just to be clear, i'm not saying that's what this song is about (doh), that's just what i get, that's the 'message' it inspires.
esta canción y en especial el minuto 8:27 me ha echo derramar lágrimas de felicidad y tristeza es como bailar un son hacia el fin del mundo.... gybe! es una banda de.otro planeta...
For anyone who loves this song, I would strongly recommend the song "Death is the Road to Awe" by Clint Mansell. It is the main theme for the incredible movie The Fountain, directed by Darren Aronofsky, which is the best movie I have seen in the last decade.
For those who think life is depressing because it is full of never ending conflict, misunderstanding, tension, defeat, less, etc. Think of how glorious conflict, reinterpretation, victory, and gain are.
it's the fact that they put this on youtube. Trust me, I've come up with a few of these myself and putting them on youtube is basically an ego-salve for the people who want others to go 'omg he's such a genius for putting this on youtube'.
+Gravity almost every single god speed song is of this caliber of greatness. Except for Yanqui UXO. that album is dividing but it does have mother fucker= redeemer which is pretty good
same! there's information linking record labels to war manufacturers. Godspeed are very "fuck the government man!" for my liking but they're still my favourite band so w/e
It could be considered depressing even though it may be build up to something very climactic. The composition (the general set-up) within itself doesn't entirely indicate whether or not it is a particular tone, that of course is up to the listener. Basically, tone and composition or "set-up", are separate components which make a song.
Thank you.
it's Hebrew, it says "tohu va'vohu", which means "formless and void"
*Yesh (nothingness)
Godspeed is a great,"new" band... love the atmosphere, the sounds, the ideas... can imagine a concert in a cave, w/ lights cutting thru smoke, a dim stage, and dim hall, and the silhouettes of the band playing...
Update: Godspeed is still a great "not-so-new" band
This is kind of what some of the early shows at their Montreal space were like. Dark, smoky. Film loops playing on fabrics falling from the ceiling. The audience hushed under a spell watching musical drama unfurl in front of them, the climaxes vibrating their very souls into ecstasy.
if any of you wants an original symphonic version of this piece, check Symphony of Sorrowful Songs (or Symphony No. 3) by Henryk Mikołaj Górecki
I freaking love this song the build up, the climax, everything. It makes me believe in the beauty of the world. That's all had to share that
This song makes me want to have a breakdown in a seven eleven bathroom
I'm surprised none of us have yet.
4:58 - Instant goosebumps all over my body. This is the first time I've ever heard this band. Fantastic!
4:58
this is best post-rock track ever created

I discovered this group less then 40 minutes ago...now it's one of my favourite!! Incredible...
I feel honored I watched them live few years ago. Godspeed for all of us!
these guys are so atmospheric and beautiful, and Canadian!
This song; this band inspires so much emotion and collective memories... Its so prophetic and ominous, foreboding and subtle. Brilliant!
is it not possible to just listen......no need to break down or interrupt....just listen...get swept away....godspeed is one of those collectives that can inspire tears or giant shit eating grins....its amazing to me how such talent can slip through the cracks......

Exactly my thoughts
Hi hows life after 11 years
Naruii ### even better than it was then, I got married, we bought a house, I have a great job. My wife and I are moving to Japan soon and I’m about to self publish my first comic book.
And I still listen to Godspeed You! Black Emperor when I’m writing :) thanks for asking, thanks for caring. Hope life is good for you too.
Our Fantasy Life wow thats great i honestly didnt expect you to respond. i just checked out your channel as you have some really well made videos, hope you guys make it big someday.
they played this tonight and let me tell you it was hundred percent worth the wait
I see what you mean, whenever I hear 8:28 and onwards, I get chills everywhere, this invokes new emotions to me that I never even knew existed.
Brilliant, just brilliant! Never heard this band before and randomly chose this song to get an idea of what they sound like. Man does this song make a great first impression!

The writing on the album cover are the Hebrew words "Tohu Vavohu", which means the primordial chaos the universe was in before the world began.
2019 anyone? This track is everlasting.
Congratz for 1 million views.
Someone takes me to bed , i have been listening to them for 2 hours
Best show I've ever been to: Behind us, a guy working an old school projector is tangled in lengths of film as he creates visual loops on the fly, and onstage, Godspeed builds gorgeous, teetering walls of sound, covered with the images of people and places long forgotten.
10 years old and this is finally going to have 1 million views
about fucking time this song is a fucking masterpiece
I will never tire of this, god it's divine & completely soul destroying.
This is quite a life changing experience. God Speed you! Black Emperor have opened my eyes to a new world and concept of music. Amazing work.
we are talking about serious music here!!!!
I have only one thing to say:
WOW!
when I dream I vision of life
how can anyone match up into this light
when love seeps through every soul that bleeds
to every second of everything you've ever dreamed
when love as a force of power fulfilling its own existence
comes down and marries this human experience
when shooting stars connect with broken hearts
I shall run to the truth for the truth will always follow me
I pretty much just blindly stumbled into this without having any idea what to expect. I have to say, this stuff is really cool! Its like watching the sky collapse.
Godspeed will always be one of the greatest bands that ever existed....
AMAZING!!! Great composition and well arranged. It's good to hear people are still interested in making great music.
this just hypnotizes me. i cant help but close my eyes and let my imagination run wild. truly amazing.
I pretty much just blindly stumbled into this without having any idea what to expect. I have to say, this stuff is really cool!
Montreal - Québec Band ! Un vrai chef-d'oeuvres cette chanson !

I love this song so much. It's in my favorite scene in Tales of the Past 3
Nalax what about the sacrifices what about them do you want to end up like a selfish leader shut up no, no, NO!!!! *Blazer stabs mograine with the corrupted ash bringer*
First time listening to this band...incredible...
This is a soul transformed into sound.
when shadow comes to claim our souls
some must rise the light of old
names in stone,spirits of legend
deeds unknown yet never forgotten
these are the duranin
of honor within and of fear without
remember them, when in hope you doubt.
Came back to revisit this.
Oh, how beautiful it is.
i don't think it's boring at all... maybe the first 5 minutes are essential to create the tension and the other 5 to release it. it keeps you weeping on hold and then delivers chaos. hauntingly beautiful...
una melodia perfecta para escucharla durante un viaje...o mejor aun durante una noche lluviosa de invierno...
the meaning is closer to "formless" or "emptiness" than chaos
My god. I've been listening to GSYBE for like 2 hours now and this song blew my mind even more than the rest of them. Holy shit.
..Not only him. It needs every member of the band to be a real genius to play such a damn good music.
This song is absolutely great to write to.
@TheJohnstead what are ya talking about man the last 5 to 4 mins is a build up to a dramatic visual that you create in your mind and it sound wonderful

i would give them my dying breath if it meant they could live for just one second longer.
they are well kinds of people
Blazer gets the ashbringer
man i agree with you 100%. they are truly one of a kind.

I've been looking for people that create music like this. I have found it. Finally.
Omg reminds me of tales of the past 3
bought this on vinyl the other day...
cant wait i get my old lp player back from service!
this song just like east hastings it appeals to pure emotion. and makes you feel things that songs really havent made you feelin ages.
Only recently finally allowed this band into my life. I actually got into Thee Silver Mount Zion Orchestra first... Equally excellent band with some truly astounding albums.
They're back!
THEY'RE BACK!!
WOOO HOOO!!!
nice, it made me feel... calmed down.
thnks +5
this is my favorite song by GYBE, the cello and violin are just... i dont even know how to explain it. it blows my mind every time.
The strings at the very end are the most beautiful part! Why would you cut it short!?
Sorry man, I totally agree with you... It just dates back to when youtube limited videos to be 10min long max.
Honestly I'm never sure...
lol now they make you go over 10 minutes if you wanna make any money.
Travis - Love Will Come Through :)
both are wonderful!!!
@duoglide2008
it makes me happy most of MTVs audience wouldn't have the attention span to appreciate this
They are gonna be boss at p4k festival. I've loved them for about six years and never thought I'd see them live in a million years, can't wait!
@Lycantroph Truly a medicine, my friend. Depression is the opposite of elation but doensn't necessarily exclude eachother, for me that's what this song is about, the way it builds itself from chaos to clarity, from nothing to perfection, depression to elation, from doubt to hope, and so on..

my favorite part starts about half way through but i love the whole song. its just amazing
They played a profoundly excellent version of this live in Dublin last night. Without a doubt, the highlight of the gig.
the best part begins at fifth minute o.O amazing!
Do you feel like a hero yet?
I didn't mean to hurt anybody man
Do ya do ya?
I shook hands with Mike Moya. I'll never forget that day.
For those who think life is depressing because it is full of never ending conflict, misunderstanding, tension, defeat, less, etc. Think of how glorious conflict, reinterpretation, victory, and gain are.
@Chorltonian I wonder what those people would do with themselves on GY!BE concert when there is Hope Drone playing
omg the outro! first 5 mins is like yeah sure then you get to the'wtf!!' bit!
This is oddly beautiful. I think i like it
Well, the people are free to go and buy the stuff! Wonderful music.
welcome back, Godspeed You! Black Emperor.
it's the fact that they put this on youtube. Trust me, I've come up with a few of these myself and putting them on youtube is basically an ego-salve for the people who want others to go 'omg he's such a genius for putting this on youtube'.
This is one of the greatest songs I've ever heard!!! If they played this song in war zones, there would be world peace.
+Gravity almost every single god speed song is of this caliber of greatness. Except for Yanqui UXO. that album is dividing but it does have mother fucker= redeemer which is pretty good
+Flawless9183 ironically, the Yanqui album cover is of war bombs being dropped
yeah I heard the information about the bombs on the albums sleeve is false.
same! there's information linking record labels to war manufacturers. Godspeed are very "fuck the government man!" for my liking but they're still my favourite band so w/e
+TeaDrinker3000 To your point about the bombs: "Yanqui UXO" means "[American] Un-eXploded Ordinance"
One of their many masterpieces.. Fitting soundtrack for today...
I remember going nuts to this song a couple years back
Totally agree! Did you know the album hobbly lie by Lucid Rivers was written in the dark! Also best enjoyed with eyes closed!
🌊🦑Remember headphones guys...

i just started listening to these guys. its different from any other band ive ever listened to and i fucking love it!
great song.
this is very powerful music. evoking deep feelings, definitely
love having this band in my library
Very nice. I love creative writting:) Keep it up, let it flow, overtake.
@Djiande That's an awesome way to look at it!
