So where exactly did Alan deny that happiness is the meaning of life? Alan only says that fulfilling all our dreams and desires is not the meaning of life. Because in the end it would be boring, which I agree with. But I don't think "fulfilling all our dreams and desires" equals happiness. Infact I'd say happiness is rather the appreciation of every state of affairs. But yeah, I think we just have two different definitions of happiness. :) To me, happiness is the meaning of life.
I agree with your point of view. In the other lecture he(Watts) was talking about doing things you like doing in life because doing things you don't like doing just to keep on doing more things you don't like doing leads to spending life in a miserable way. So hapiness as a meaning of life means for me that you strive to make your life the most enjoyable to you. And you can achieve this by doing things that give you happiness, things that are deep in your hearth, following your honest and conscious choices. So I don't understand why is this short part of his lecture called "Happiness is NOT the meaning of life". Besides, you truly are the one that sets the meaning to your life and only you can give your life a meaning. You can make this by influence of other things or people but really it's up to you what you live for. This video propably should be called "Pleasure is NOT the meaning of life". Because you need the balance, but I think in the end you want to be on the happier side of life.
SamaR Well said. I couldn't agree more.^^ You as an individual define the meaning of your life. And happiness can certainly be it. Great to know that there are people out there who like to philosophize about life in a similar way like me. Appreciate your comment bro ;)
I recommend you watching a movie called "Peaceful Warrior" if you haven't seen it. It's also philosophical about life and teaches some wisdom too. WIshing you all the best, my friend :)
Three years ago, I had my first meditative "vision", after two years of consistent meditative practice. This was the first time I experienced the complete abandonment of my ego and the realization of what everything truly is. When I woke up, the first thing I said to myself was, "HOLY SHIT! That's what they mean when they say, "All is one"" Honestly, it was an overwhelming experience. I felt vulnerable and naked. I was too afraid to meditate again until half a year later. Now, I am infinitely grateful for that enlightening experience.
Best channel on UA-cam .. My best dreams are when I feel the comfort of everyone I’ve ever loved and even lost floating with me through light and what I can only describe as beauty.. I feel emotions of joy and sadness surrounded by adventure.. No feelings of malice or negative thoughts! .. I love dreams! Then I wake up for work and the concept of reality 😂 .. I’d like to believe them dreams are where we all go
Alan Watts and the way he portrays everything is a real mindblower, this is but a fraction of one of his many, many incredible lectures. Sadly people want to keep playing the senseless competition games instead of opening and advancing our consiousness to achieve a new level of civilization.
It's just that the meaning of life is overthought and overcomplicated. We make everything much more complicated than it actually is. This statement by Sadhguru is the truest one, everything we add on top of it is just made up for the search of something deeper.
the loophole in this type of thinking is that if u re- erased ur memories , having the urge to dream 3x75 , you would re-experience everything as if it did not happen in choosing the type of dream. Its not about the type of stimulation you end up, its not like the soul is re-stimulating everything, this type of thinking is well placed if one's psychological effect is satisfied

I’ve been disappointed too many times by hope and forming functional beliefs, and I truly feel like whatever premise I base my belief system upon should be as dysfunctional as possible, as to lead me to a point where the suffering I endure overcaps again and... well, you got the point. Anyway, I appreciate the small moment of respite and nostalgia you offered. Thank you.
Try religion. This life is a test. Believing in a higher power is innate in everyone and ignoring the glory and justice of God will inevitably cause a hole in your life. This life is a test, so ask yourself and ponder over the important questions before its too late- Why am I here? What is our purpose? Who created the universe? What happens when I die? And do your research.
Life will never be easy and it will never be a smooth ride. Happiness can be found in it from the most unlikely places. We all strive be happy at the end of our lives but what about when we're LIVING our lives. Sure some days will be terrible and others may want to make you give up. But finding those little moments of happiness or peace can really make you appreciate the life you're living in..if the world seems dark, be the light.
The single most important thing in life is enjoy yourself as much as possible in every single way and give back before you leave in any way. love, hate, loose ,gain, create, destroy multiply or not and above all educate yourself your gonna need it. it’s all about being alive and don’t be lazy and FYI life is not all about you get out do and give back leave the earth for filled. I’m 38 and still striving to do all I want wish me luck and good luck to you your gonna need it peace out ✌️
This life obviously has meaning. God created us with an intellect, a moral compass, with belief and with temptations. With different religions and with good and evil. Our job is to submit to his will and believe in him and the last day, and to work towards the hereafter. The fact that we exist and the universe exists is proof that we have been created. The universe had a beginning and someone brought that beginning to life. God did. Take a poor innocent kid in Ghana that lives a life of poverty and suffering then starves to death. And take a rich mafia leader that murders tons of people, lives a life of satisfaction and wealth, then dies happily. How is that fair? It isn't. God judges us all for what we've done in this life on the day of Judgement. You should bear witness to the inner voice that tells you there is a God. And he sent us an instruction manual: his holy scripture, the Quran. It gives us hope and it explains all there is to life. It contains miracles so we believe with both our heart and our rationale. This life is too short to waste boxing yourself into one stream of thought. Once you die there is no return, and no, it doesnt stop there, however comforting it sounds. We don't just turn into dirt and bones. If you ever decide to watch this video, you'll be honored. ua-cam.com/video/3_JcakBpoWA/v-deo.html
This speech made me realise a couple of years ago that what I actually want in life is surprises. And the nature of surprises is that sometimes they’re good, and sometimes bad. But that’s better than sitting in the middle with everything under control.
Deep, profound. It made me feel somewhat lighter, as if a weight was taken off my shoulders. This perspective on life seems simple, accepting that we just are. And it's beautiful.
i really like this concept in moderation. like you can't control everything and it's so relieving, so then you can focus that energy on stuff you actually should be worried about
In my opinion the main point is a matter of experiencing contradictions (or contrasts), because in so many life situations it works in this way. When you are sick and get healthy you are able to cherish life more for a limited time..when you are in love you seem to love everybody and everything but also only for limited time (until you get used to your partner..), when you are poor and get rich you love your life (but only until you get used to your wealth..) and so on and so on..there are endless examples for this structure..so my conclusion is: We need to live in extremes or in polarities to "understand" what joy is all about..
The Purpose of life is to pray to the one who created you...God! If you pass the test (life), you will go to heaven! A place out of this world. You would stay there forever. But if you do bad...You go to the other way...Hell fire. And you will burn forever. That is the meaning of life for me.
safya El idrissi wrong! That is works and performance salvation. JESUS took all my punishment and removed all my sins. Being born again and knowing Him is eternal life and not performance. Read the book of Romans
"playing that you weren't God" parallels Werner Erhard's "You're God in your universe. You caused it, You pretended not to cause it so that you could play in it, and you can remember you caused it any time you want to."

We only love when it benefits our survival. Love doesn’t exist, the love you feel is a chemical reaction in your brain to make you feel good which is key to our survival & for reproduction as well.
@@hobnob666 are u being serious? How can u not feel love. You know it exists cus for one, u can tell the difference between liking someone and loving someone.
Mushroom World Love is just a part of our nature so we can reproduce & possibly get a small group of people to defend against predators. That is the whole point of feeling love, it’s beneficial to our survival. Society made the idea of love up because that’s what humans do, we make stuff up because that’s the only way we can keep a system going. You can’t keep a system going by telling the truth but by lying to people. Love is a trick of the mind to promote your survival. But believe what you want, I get tired of brainwashed people not understanding me. And yes, there are people who exist that cannot feel strong sexual love. That’s why they never date or marry anyone. They just don’t have that desire like other people.

charliesgotaguitar because you would have tried all other kinds of pleasurable lives until you got bored. Perhaps we are talking of millions of different lives. Eventually the only exciting thing would be to live a life where you forget that you are dreaming, so that the stakes seem serious. Perhaps in this life there's no plot already written, maybe everything is left to chance, so you can experience all kinds of lives. Good and bad. Its an interesting thought experiment although it would probably defeat the purpose to realize the truth. Or maybe that is the point of the game?
The problem with that is that you're assuming that the life we're living as of now has about the exact amount of suffering, happines, joy and sadness. It's assumes that over the course of many lives this is the one that has finally ballanced the system. But in any case it's a lot more likely to be one of many iterations in between, not the last one. Also you're assuming that the person who's capable of shaping his memory wont take another course, wich is to erase his memories and go again and again about having a happy life after another. Also somehow he uses the first part of the video as a proof that free will exists, wich is ludicrous. This video is full of holes, if i wanted to keep writing i could go on and on.
Ashiente I didn't say this was the optimal life or that the dreamers are looking to find the perfect balanced life. The perfect life is probably one of the early ones, full of adventure and joy. Why not just erase your memory and relive the same perfect experience over and over? Because there's no growth there. I imagine that once a life is over you go back to the real world, you get all your memories back and you reflect on the life you just lived before going to the next one. Doing the same one over and over is pointless. And actually permanently erasing your memory would be the same as killing yourself, so it would be better to always remember each life. As an immortal being, after having experienced all the best lives out there, the only way to experience something new would be to try the other kind of lives. Mundane lives, boring lives, even terrible and painful lives. Not even necessarily human, perhaps some are experiencing what it's like to be a cockroach. Why would they choose to do such a thing? I guess that's the nature of infinity, you can either try every possible permutation of experience out there or choose to repeat old ones. I'm not saying I believe this, just that I can see how it would work. Like the simulation theory, there's no way of proving it, but it makes sense.
Ashiente I just noticed that Alan Watts does mention that we should realise how optimal our situation is. In that case I agree with you. I don't find our situation optimal at all. Only in the sense that I explained previously, it might be optimal only because its new. If we're maximizing novelty then it still makes sense. Not my idea of fun though.
He also doesn't explain why we have the power to change things. Before 1:50 he talks about the dream where we DON'T control everything and some things with risk. He says that could be the world we are living in but how does that make us in control. It's contradictory
Masjid H: Most people, especially this younger generation do not have a glue about what you wrote. Even born again Christian evangelicals think you need to be baptised. Saint Francis of Assisi's prayer includes "in the dying, we are born to eternal life" In this life the personal ego has to become selfless to be able to see and know things that the veil of life covers up. An Epithany. A waking up to see what is real and important.
That's a tragedy more than anything. Granted nothing really matters at the end of the day in even 200 years, so idk why I'm even fretting it, but... just because something seems to make sense doesn't mean it does. I feel more that the meaning in life is to enjoy the journey no matter what you're going through and not sell your soul to live better, because everything is already a curse and a blessing... so to say "I have to do this thing job I absolutely hate for X years to reach this goal that should make me happy" clearly isn't the way. It may seem more tragic that people die when life is still remotely worth living, but the opposite is much so more... Although without rigid expectations and worries, alongside self compassion, I'm sure it's possible to thrive through any tragedy
This life is a test to see who will believe and obey. This isn't our final destination, and I think very well you know that. We don't do whatever we want in this life. We prepare for the hereafter and open our minds to realise the reality coming for us, and to bear witness on the existence of God.
The Secret of Life Anyone with eyes can see the way to live - by watching life, observing nature and cooperating with it. Making common cause with the process of existence, by living life for itself; deriving pleasure from the gift of pure being. Life is its own answer. Accept it and enjoy it day by day. Live as well as possible. Expect no more. Destroy nothing, humble nothing, look for fault in nothing. Leave unsullied and untouched all that is beautiful. Hold that which lives in all reverence, for life is given by the sovereign of our universe; given to be savored, to be luxuriated in, to be respected. From the 1980 TV special The Martian Chronicles

The teachings of the great stoics are as relevant today as they were thousands of years ago. The physical body may have gone but their consciousness never will. That will exist forever and as there is only one consciousness that wisdom is within us all. It’s within every living thing for we are all one. We all come from and will return to the same place. Just stop and take a minute to see how all in nature is so intricately connected. 🙏🏼❤️
So if each one of us is a god, then some are puppets to others, some gods will have upper hand on others. Its a good thought from alan, even though its not original and its one dimensional.

“It is the very pursuit of happiness that thwarts happiness… Ultimately, man should not ask what the meaning of his life is, but rather must recognize that it is he who is asked.
I couldn't agree more.^^
You as an individual define the meaning of your life. And happiness can certainly be it.
Great to know that there are people out there who like to philosophize about life in a similar way like me.

Who's the one who is grateful? :D

No shit sherlock
It's actually deeper than it seems. He is either a genius or a meme master but the meaning of life is indeed, to live.
It's just that the meaning of life is overthought and overcomplicated. We make everything much more complicated than it actually is. This statement by Sadhguru is the truest one, everything we add on top of it is just made up for the search of something deeper.

I have found about him at 37 so it is not late for a change in life and self-development
Happiness may not be the "meaning" to life. But when you find true happiness, life sure is a beautiful thing.

This speech made me realise a couple of years ago that what I actually want in life is surprises. And the nature of surprises is that sometimes they’re good, and sometimes bad. But that’s better than sitting in the middle with everything under control.
A fully predictable future is already the past.

i really like this concept in moderation. like you can't control everything and it's so relieving, so then you can focus that energy on stuff you actually should be worried about
In my opinion the main point is a matter of experiencing contradictions (or contrasts), because in so many life situations it works in this way.
The Purpose Of Life Is Not Happiness.
It’s Usefulness.

The Purpose of life is to pray to the one who created you...God! If you pass the test (life), you will go to heaven! A place out of this world. You would stay there forever. But if you do bad...You go to the other way...Hell fire. And you will burn forever. That is the meaning of life for me.

Crazy Cool Challenges Man why do I think in a nihilistic view that do we just desire happiness just to feel good of ourselves?
He never explains why he assumes that we would end up with the same life we have. It's not an obvious leap and I don't think it's right.
charliesgotaguitar because you would have tried all other kinds of pleasurable lives until you got bored.
Happiness is not the meaning of life, but happiness brings life meaning.

Saint Francis of Assisi's prayer includes
"in the dying, we are born to eternal life" In this life the personal ego has to become selfless to be able to see and know things that the veil of life covers up. An Epithany. A waking up to see what is real and important.
the dude above you in the comments wrote this
"Life is not here to make us happy. Life is here to make us conscious. -Eckhart Tolle
so... DMT? lol

Anyone with eyes can see the way to live - by watching life, observing nature and cooperating with it.
