  • The new and highly anticipated Turin DF64E comes with the same Italmill burrs as the DF64. I had all 3 styles of 64mm SSP Burrs and wanted to try putting the multipurpose burrs into the DF64E. In this video I show you the long and slightly involved process of installing and aligning these SSP Burrs. They payoff was huge, and the fine adjustability of the DF64E makes these burrs a joy to use. Highly recommended.

    I just ordered a new DF64P and now I'm unquestionably so glad I chose to order it with the SSP HU burrs and paid to have them installed, aligned and calibrated.

    This video really helped me when aligning SSP HU (espresso) burrs on the DF64p. Not as challenging as I thought it was going to be, and luckily with one folded over foil and another single layer foil I achieved perfect alignment. Great grinder - the clarity at home is similar to, if not better than, the local roastery/cafe that uses a Mahlkonig EK43. Maybe side by side or blind tasting would reveal that one to be superior, but with the puck prep at home it actually does taste more clear than from what I remember at the cafe.

      Those SSP are some solid burrs. Much better than I anticipated. I think overall you get an amazing cup daily for a very reasonable cost.

    Usually I rotate the burr into a different position and determine which is the most aligned by default before shimming

    Thanks for the Tutorial, looks really cumbersome aligning the burrs on the P&E versions. I think would be better to have the SSP burrs pre installed when ordering the grinder would save a lot of time. Thanks again for the content 👍. Would love to see the reviews with the ssp burrs once done.

      These unimodal burrs are awesome and this grinders adjustment mechanism is so smooth and accurate. I love the combo, extremely impressed

      @@portakeeper is the MP burr produce better taste than SSP espresso burr?

    • @portakeeper
      @portakeeper  2 роки тому

      @@adityancandra9711 in my opinion it is what I have preferred. I have been using the MP burr on my very nice natural processed fruity beans and it has been amazing. I have been using the DF83 with more traditional espresso burrs for less fruity and it makes such a nice and slightly thicker homogeneous slightly less clarity cup that is enjoyable. It’s nothing like a conical where there is very little clarity.

    was looking to switch out my niche in favour of the 64 ,heard so many stories of calibration problems,think I’ll stick with niche

    • @portakeeper
      @portakeeper  Рік тому +1

      Yeah, the niche is so basic, and the conical burr sets have such a wide particle distribution that you almost can’t not dial in a Niche.
      Out the box most flat grinders are calibrated great including these.

      Stick with the niche. It’s more forgiving and you don’t need to take the bottom off and to loosen nut and rotate it’s not really hard but just hate to bother with it.

    I just got mine and the factory zero was unsuitable for espresso. I adjusted it so middle gets me nice shots. Have tons of room on either side to play with.
    Haven’t checked out the factory alignment but it’s prob ass. Maybe I’ll get some ssp burrs down the line but I’m enjoying the machine after fiddling with it.

    Ah yeah, someone was saying it's hard to install SSP burrs in here and I was like WHY? It's pretty easy in DF64! But yeah I see the issue, because the newer variants like DF64E or P have less range in terms of grind adjustment, and the SSP burrs are significantly thicker, it means your range just got a whole lot finer (too fine in your case where they were already touching at the coarsest setting initially!) on the regular DF64, It never bothered me much that the espresso point went from being like 15 to 40 after installing SSPs (because burr touch point also moved up) the only down side on that one is that it says 'Moka' where your espresso range is, but not a big deal, you can also get a new dial sticker to put over it or re-position your original dial carefully.

    • @portakeeper
      @portakeeper  2 роки тому

      Not only that but some of the SSP have a larger fine cutting surface which means harder to see where the burrs are touching. So all around they can be a bit tricky.

    Not sure I ken the thinking in putting a multi purpose burr in a espresso focus grinder?

      If you buy the burrs at the same time they can be installed for a fee. Might recommend doing that. If you are good with stock burrs it comes out of the box ready to go!

    Thanks for your time and effort to make the video but I would rather screw the burrs back without any alignment work, too tedious for me. I use a Eureka Mignon XL and find no consistency issue every time I take the burrs out to clean and put them back as normal

    • @portakeeper
      @portakeeper  2 роки тому

      Should really only need to put the burrs in once. They are designed to last most people a very long time. As for just popping the top off for cleaning that is easy and doesnt require alignment

    I zeroed burrs just like your video. My finest setting 0 is just a slight chatter. However now even on course setting my grounds are too fine. Any suggestions, did you have the same problem?

    • @portakeeper
      @portakeeper  Рік тому

      If too fine for you, I would adjust off of zero. Allow for courser range. On mine, mine is pretty much perfect range for espresso.

    does upgrading ssp burr improves the taste of coffee?

    • @portakeeper
      @portakeeper  10 місяців тому

      No easy answer. These are MP burrs and are suited for a different coffee style and typically lighter roasts. Yes, different burrs can really change the flavor.

  • @vex123

    Looks like Turin needs to upgrade their manufacturing process to use high precision machining to get the accuracy needed for burr alignment. This is also the problem with the DF83

    How well does the DF64 maintain alignment over time. Have you had to redo it? The springs on it makes me curious if it shifts at all after cleaning it

    • @portakeeper
      @portakeeper  2 роки тому +1

      So far mine has been great, not sure I’ve had long enough to know but also the alignment should not change if you don’t take the burrs off or install in a different orientation.

      Yeah, the burrs were on TIGHT. Another issue I’m having is I’m not sure what I’m doing when adjusting the zero point. I feel like I’m just loosening or tightening the adjustment arm and not really adjusting the space between the burrs
