I have easy to follow and thorough step by step tutorials "do it yourself" (DIY) videos to help you with your broken lawn and garden equipment including snowblowers and zero turn mowers.
I do my best to teach you how to easily diagnose problems the fastest, quickest and most efficient way with real repairs beyond just replacing a spark plug. These tips are for both the homeowner and shop owner.
Whether it be a handheld, two stroke, two cycle engine like a chainsaw, weed eater, weed whacker, string trimmer, grass trimmer, line trimmer, hedge trimmer, strimmer, brush cutter, leaf blower, or four stroke, four cycle units like a lawnmower, wood splitter, lawn tractor, zero turn mower, snowblower, pressure washer, generator or a ride on mower that needs parts installed or replaced, I’m your go-to guy.
My favorite brands of spark plugs are NGK and Champion and are the ones I recommend.
I’ve been a small engine mechanic for many decades and also run my own repair shop so my videos are loaded with tips and tricks that I have learned and want to share with you. You will also find many tool and product reviews from top brands on my channel as well.

Awesome tip that really works!
Spent about 3 hours today fruitlessly trying to figure out how to remove a Briggs and Stratton engine from its induction generator rotor.
Tried your tip and all done in just 15 minutes and no damage, thank you so much, your a star!
Getting ready to swap the engine on my DuroMax and I'll be watching a lot of your videos. Thanks for this info!
You are the first person to get right to it and be very clear about what i was looking for on this ,i fix alot of thing's and i have wasted a lot of time look on this thing and come up with nothing. So thank you so very much I'm Terry in Topeka KS
Thank you so much! Two hours of screwing around in trying to remove 'er and then I find this video.. Already threaded so 10 minutes later it's free.
Thanks for the video. After two days of trying. Ten minutes after this video, job done.
Glad it helped
I have been trying to get the generator of my Honda for a while, saw this video in the morning, used your trick and its now off. Brilliant :)
Thank you
Dan
thank you so much for the video I bought a old homelite generator that was locked up and your trick worked great I used a long drill bit and it pop off thanks a million I almost really mess up.
A friend sent me this video as I was having trouble removing the armature on my Lifan generator after the rod on the 190FD engine failed. I has resorted to banging on the armature with no success. Luckily the shaft had threads and after trial & error I got the armature off using my DeWalt impact wrench. Great video, thanks!! Andy

Thanks man, I need to change the engine oil seal on a Vanguard 7.5 Briggs and Stratton Pro 4000 portable genset. I've been struggling with this exact dilemma and you've shown me what I need to do to remove that armature. Thanks donyboy.
you're welcome
THe windings were press on tighter than I expected, good job dony
After fooling around for 3 hours with a car jack the damn thing did not budge but after I saw your video it came off in 20 minutes. Thanks
Tried your method the other day and worked perfectly. Thanks for the great instructional vid. One thing I changed is I used A hardened rod (to lessen the chance of it mushrooming and getting stuck) and used A impact wrench instead of roping the cylinder.
One could dry putting lube into hole and grease nipple. If its tight enough grease pressure should be enough to pop it out with out danger of mushrooming rod, though bit messy and bit grease gets wasted there, though if there is connection hole outside it will leak from there if its not extremely stiff grease. How much force grease system has is telling from guys who have managed to crack cast iron parts when there has not been way for grease to exit and that some tracked vehicles use grease in cylinder to tension the tracks.
Thanks this may come in handy some day. I think I would put a soft landing pad for it when it jumped off. Keep posting!
Great video. Same technique is used on Polaris ATV to remove the primary clutch from the engine, but polaris already has the threads in the clutch for the large screw in bolt. I have removed the bad armature from my older Generac L4001, I only wish I could come up with a sutiable replacement on this apparent no longer available replacement part. Complete engine awaiting repair if I ever manage to find an armature. Thanks again for the clear, concise video.
Hadn't thought to thread the end of the shaft. Great idea! SAved me from buying 'another' puller to add to my collection and possibly ruin something in the process. THANKS!
Great video buddy appreciate it. I would have never gotten it apart without your help
No problem 👍
Used your method it worked well. not using anti seize for reassembly . You did an excellent video. Thanks.
Donny,
Very well done, thank you for sharing. I just finished using your technique, including tapping the center of the armature. If you ever find yourself in MA/RI there is some cold beer or hot coffee waiting for you. Subscribed.
Thank you so much! I have a Winco 4PTH - 3M/L10 it said to use a hammer. No-go, but a 3/8" x 24 tap fit PERFECT. Got a grade 8 3/8 x 24 and cut a gutter nail head and end off - WHAM! There it is! Now I can replace the governor :)
Thanks , I broke my Honda Gen. all the way down and didn't have a clue how to get this armature off. I do now!
Great tip on the puller. I wouldn't have known that the armature was on a taper. Is there usually a shaft key involved or just the bare taper? If it is the taper alone that is transmitting the power to the rotor shaft, then I would be a bit leery of putting any lubricant other than light machine oil to prevent corrosion. The taper is meant to lock together.
I just watched your promo video. I think that you have one of the most clean and professional looking channels I have seen. I am now subscribed.
I just loosen up the long bolt, then slam the end of the generator onto a big wood block. It has worked for me so far, but each generator design is different.
Good puller idea, I will definately keep it in mind!!!
I saw this video 4hours too late ☹️😂 broke mine and it was the exact same model. Thanks for the genius tip tho!
You are a true mechanic with that trick good job
Cool, I learned something new! How can you tell if an electric motor is bad or if an armature is bad. Can a UA-camr rewind a motor or you need a special machine for that? Thanks for making the videos!
love this channel, and others like Taryl and Mustie1 , with North America going crazy buying generators , the more generator videos you do the more views ... i guess we all want to know how to keep them running for as long as possible .... a push mower not so much but they are getting way more expensive than say 5 yrs ago .... thanks to you guys a dirty carb on my champion is no longer something i worry about , i do wish somebody would tear down and cross reference carbs and other parts on the newer line of Chinese Inverter suitcase generators , about 3-4 different lines of the same generators, Buffalo tools that sells the Sportsman line told me they will be stocking parts in the future, they at least have parts lists and schematics. the line I bought doesnt at all ...... Thanks for doing these videos
Just found your channel. Wanted to say thanks for this great tip. Worked for me just like you described. My armature didn't quite do the same thing as yours but the result was the same. I tightened the bolt but dropped the wrench I was using and when I went to pick the wrench up the armature popped from just having some pressure on it. Ordering a new engine this week. Again THANKS for the informative videos. Take Care...
you're welcome, make sure to subscribe
Oh hey donyboy73 I guess you did have a video on how to get the engine off of the generator. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for the assistance.
I ended up using the two prybar and hammer method, but I wouldn't have figured it out that the shaft was tapered without your help.
If the taper hadn't released, I was on my way to the tap and die set!
Thanks I had no idea how to get them apart save me hours of figuring it out . Gave you a thumbs up and subscribed .
truly you're the small engine doctor, keep sharing very useful ideas. thanks
thanks you
On my generator there is a bolt and i cant turn it without turning the armature.
Thanks a bunch. I was just struggling with how to do it. I love free advice.
Thanks, I've been trying to covert my generator into an engine for my go kart for sometime now. Had no clue how to get the armature off. Thanks again!

I just checked out your channel Don. You just got another subscriber. Great content.
Thanks that helped! My first thought was to use a bolt and a slide hammer.
i got the same one u was doing thanks u so much i was stuck for a minute
Thanks a million........ been fighting this for a week and took 20 min after seeing your video.
WEH
Excellent video - clear and to the point.
Thanks! I'll be doing this soon and this is extremely useful. I have a question though. Have you ever re-wound an armature like this?
excellent advice as always from this you-tuber
thanks Tony!
Worked a treat, saved me a lot of head scratching. Thank you
thanks dude, the bold pushing inside is a great idea .
Dony...you saved my booty...I have to do 3 of these.
+TheCaptainSlappy no prob, lol
Excellent idea.
I thought I needed to do this, but I was able to fix my generator with flashing the field coils.
Most of the time flashing will work.
Nice demo, Dony.
works great. make sure to use the sizes he says in the vid, else u may break the rod if it is smaller. thanks donyboy
Mr. Donyboy thank you very much, from Venezuela!!!!!!
+JDBD83 you're welcome
thanks to you I saved a generator. thanks for the how to
Man Thanks to this video I could remove my armature of my GX200 engine so usefull this,
very direct ,straight to the point , worked exactly ,
Trickier then I thought! Nice video
I can't tell my friends. they won't pay Me to fix there stuff . good job bro .
Dang. I wish I'd seen this last week. I tried everything I could think of, prying, pullers, mallet. I ended up buying a harbor freight tap n die set and doing the same exact thing (except no rope in the cylinder). As stuck as it seemed, I kinda thought it would just strip the threads right out, but it worked exactly like yours, popped right off and fell on the bench.
i like your videos, this was my job for years working on motor shop
thanks , 14 hp vanguard , no threads . did just the way you showed and perfect off in 5 minutes , thanks so much
Dude, you rock. I was just trying to figure this out, and this video helped a lot. THANK YOU!
Hello, I'm very curious. Does that rotor have a permanent magnet. If there is no magnet, where is DC current given to the rings on the rotor. Greetings. I am from Turkey. Do you know Turkey.
kool vid thanks, always nice to get new mechanical ideas for future use.
Ferd
Donyboy is the best!!! No question about it.
Awesome, have two generators I need to take apart, thanks for this video.
the older homelite i bought off craigslist for 35.00 dollars has a briggs 1970's on it wasn't locked up after pulling the gen and getting into it it had never been ran and it had some kind of stop on it I guess for shipping it . have you ever come across anything like that. it was around the shafted I could have just cut it but your trick worked great. model e4000-1 are these good gen and the carb was bone dry never had gas in it.
This worked like a charm, thanks!. Btw, I have a Coleman PM0435005 and the fan (0063406) seems to have ripped itself to shreds. I cannot for life of me find a replacement. If I just remove the fan would strapping a box fan to the chassis dissipate the heat enough to make this a usable product again or am I screwed? Are there any work-arounds, 3d printed parts, aftermarket, etc??
I am a generac master tech per factory spec the recommended way to remove the armature is striking with a rubber mallet rotating and repeating until it comes loose
Thx. This video helped allot. Now I can get my project moving along. God bless.
very useful and brilliant ideas , thanks for the vids Dony
Dony you make it look easy. Thank you!
Hi Guys
First, thread the inside end of your rotor tube with the appropriate size tap and find a suitable bolt with a good amount of thread. Stand the Generator vertically with the rotor at the top. Wrap a good amount of pipe tape on all the threads of the bolt you found. Fill the rotor shaft hole with water. Start the bolt into the end of the rotor shaft and using your favorite electric impact tool, run the bolt in fairly quickly and the hydraulic pressure will pop the rotor off the end of the crankshaft. Works every time. If its leaking around the threads allot, put more pipe tape on your bolt.
Cheers
Willy
thank you very much it helped me to open my alternator.lloyd australia
Thanks for posting this. I used this metter yesterday.
Nice video. Thanks donyboy73!
Thanks Donyboy, this was very helpful. Watched another video on chainsaw carb clean up few months back. thanks for your videos.
@BriggsMower what i do is solder them together, or get a new 5mm pice of wire and solder it to the old wire, then cover it with heat shrink, like 2 to 3 layers
mr. donyboy thank you very much, God bless you
+Radix Kurniawan you're welcome
@donyboy73 ok ill try that how do u join it with a nail or a screw? ill have a look at myne tomorrow case some unscrew iv seen one inn ur vids.
that was great info thanks like a clutch puller on sleds
Great video. Do you have any suggestions on how to put the armature back on the tapered shaft? I torque mine down to the specs in the manual but the brushes do not line up with the slip rings. The armature needs to be seated another 1/4 inch onto the shaft but I don't know how to make that happen. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks for the video, I have an armature that has a portion of threaded bolt sticking out by about 0.5 inch. Do you have some advice for this? The threaded rod appears a little loose side to side but will not come out! Any help appreciated!
I gave this technique a try after relentless blows from a mallet, worked like a charm and the 'pop' did make me jump haha.
This video was a great help thank you
You just saved me some money! Thanks
Don!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you for this video, it really helped me out
I showed my buddy what I did and he was impressed
I was given a generator with a seized Briggs and Stratton engine and was thinking of replacing it with a Harbor Freight engine. After getting the armature off, I used a copper bar and a hammer to drive the piston down. The engine freed up somewhat and so I tore it down completely. The rod and crank were not that bad. It looks like to piston was what had it seized. Any ideas why? Thanks again for the video.
It just takes that one time where not enough oil coats the cylinder wall where the rings make contact sliding up and down, either because the oil level was low, or was run mistakenly without oil after an oil change. On a brand new engine it is always a good idea to put a squirt of oil into the spark plug hole before starting. I hope this was of some help.
thanks for watching gus
Thank you mate .. great advice .. and you have a really positive friendly manner .. I will you well.
Rory.
i did this and it worked!
Thank you for putting this video up! Really helpful.
thanks dony your vidio on how to remove armature is abig big help in my job
adriatico abelino thanks for watching, greetings from Canada
np donyboy
thank you so much for this video its a big help for me
I just pulled apart a Companion 5250 (same as many of the Devillbis/ Porter Cable units). The bolt ended up snapping off when trying to tighten it up on the end of the rotor, but I hit the rotor with a hammer, and that in combination with the broken bolt putting pressure inside did the trick anyway. Luckily, this rotor and stator were completely burned up, so I was only saving the engine!
please tell me winding Generator
Hi there dear donyboy I have generator kipor KDE6500 is that works the same way you have at the video
No luck with removing the armature on my Generac 7500EXL. Also tried your dead blow hammer method while pressure applied with the bolt/rod. Also, tried after soaking overnight with penetrating oil inside the armature shaft and on the taper shaft between the motor and the armature fan. Then I tried striking a longer 3/8" threaded rod with a sledge hammer while prying outward on the armature fan. Still no luck. Any other ideas? Thank you for the excellent videos.
@BillyInnes thanks for watching!
Yep! the same trick works on wood shredders or anything attached to the output shaft. Thanks for sharing! Liked and subscribed!
When refitting the armature, what do you torque the bolt up to, can't find any info on this? Want it to be tight enough but not overtight and strip the thread.
@donyboy73 damm ill hace to check if it is what can i do iv already tryed heat shink and the cable didnt move.
could i rip the cable out and put a new one in or wont it work?
Dear sir how do you test that style armature thanks for your time
Thank you!❤
hay dony i need help with my echo ht lead i want to know if it unscrews off the coil because i want to put a new lead on cause the old one is cracked and i want to replace it?
donyboy really thank you so much for your videos brother you r a genius p.d.:i live in mexico jaja saludos!!
do they make a crankshaft adapter to take a standard horizontal engine work on a generac generator
good job and great tip
thanks James, have a good weekend!
