I have had four of these lovely cars , over twelve years now . All have been new , though I could probably have kept the first one , and it would be fine . Mine is a 1.5 , Se Nav , and I'm keeping it forever ( I'm 82 ) , so it'll see me out . Great to drive , and , unless it's raining heavily , I always have the top down , even in winter . I would recommend these beauties to anyone who likes a bit of fun , rather than just getting from A to B .
I would love to own the NA & NB but because of the ultra low emissions zones expanding in London (U.K), I had to go for the NC & and its a lovely fun car just for myself.
Saved my NB from the scrapyard 19 months ago. After 70 cars my joint favourite alongside my much missed Triumph Spitfire 1500. The most fun for the least cost.
Mazda are making the small British sports car better than the British do. Not counting Morgan, which is worlds apart and more of a collectors car, than a car, there are no small british sports cars since MG went to the sword after being swallowed by British Leyland. And MG could only counter the MX5 with the woful MG F which was, all things considered, a pretty dire car.
Easily better than the N1 and N2 How do I know this. Had all three. The NC is the better of the three, The later NC is nicer still.... Lovely cars. The Soft top is best. ( no future problems with roof motors etc ) and even looks nicer... The 1999 cc motor is the best too, (2 Ltr ) Lowered 25mm...spacers 25mm.... Perfect geometry and looks and drives much better. (I know about these things). Have fun.
On my second now after having a 1990 Eunos and now have a 2000 nb. Bloody brilliant weekend car and hobby. You didn’t mention the car clubs and whole culture around these things. 🤘🏻
I've got an MX5 Mk2.5 AND an Elan M100. Which is best? The one that I happen to be driving at the time! They are quite different cars really. The MX5 cost me 1/10 of the cost of the Elan to buy!
I live in the uk, currently I own a mitsubishi lancer (not evo :D) VII saloon, I like this car a lot but I'm too young and stupid to drive just a regular reliable car, I don't have a girlfriend or friends so why would I need a sedan? That's why I decided to buy an mx5 NA. (haven't bought it yet but lets give it 3 more weeks) I want to use it for my longest trip of my life, from the UK to south of Poland. about 1100 miles! Any owners here that would leave me a review whether its good idea or not? will miata make it? is it fast enough to satisfy you, not even as a fan of high speeds? do you have too look after the engine more, than just poruing extra engine oil in? I'd be happy to hear some reviews, because can't find any objective answers :p
- Remind me, which Lotus have you actually driven!??? If you are comparing to the 90's Elan - you are comparing chalk with Cheese (FWD vs RWD). As for the original Elan (which The mk1 Mx5 is a blatant copy of), nothing comes close to it and even to this day, is a perfect example of what low weight ( in the case of the Mk1 MX5 273kg Lighter) driving dynamics are all about.
It is a tough video to make. Either folks have driven one or not. If they have, they know Vicky is absolutely right. It is an exceptionally fun car for short money. If they haven't then this video has the challenge of conveying the experience. Vicky here has done great in that regard. It may not be the ultimate sports car, the best handling nor the quickest but it is really fun. Others have their favorites and they're all valid but I challenge any driving enthusiast to drive any generation MX-5 and not smile.
The MK1 is the best affordable one. The MK3 was a huge disappointment. It looked great but just wasn't anywhere near as good. Not sure about the MK4. I'll never own one. I sold my MK3 because I hated driving it. It was fidgety on the road and it just seemed too light and it needed fighting to keep in a straight line. Something was most definitely off. Not sure what. My MK1 was lovely. I had it 10 years. It was like an old shoe which fitted me perfectly. The MK3 was the worst disappointment I ever had. Somehow they spoilt it. I like the MK1 top too. So simple, so good. Just a couple of clicks to get it down and then the joy and the smiles and fun I had. No worrying if the over complicated mechanism will get stuck somewhere in the middle of its action...Why oh why cannot people accept when they made something great and not fiddle with it. I found the whole automatic roof excruciating to use. Makes you look like a real plonker instead of a cool dude. That roof is most definitely not cool. It is cool like a Scotch Bonnet chili is cool.
Please stop reviewing old cars. Leave them for the smaller channels to review so they can get an audience rather than the big channels trying to dominate everything
Bargain? There are lots of examples at £3k and still need investing in welding and painting. Spending circa £4k on 25-30 year old car does not sound like bargain.
Really not a fan of the mx5, not a practical car in any sense of the word and not particularly quick. Yes it handles very well, but for similar money buy a Clio 172 or 2nd gen Civic type R...
You pay your money and make a choice. The cars you name are all tintops with performance but that is exactly what the mx5 is not so if you want a cheap open top the mx5 is the choice. Still zips along on the road with a smile on your face , not looking round for speed cameras I had mine for ten years cheap it was cheap to run. Only replaced the tyres because of their age. Impractical you say, well you are going to struggle to get three mates in. Two of us and enough luggage for a week away with the boot bars and waterproof bag no probs.
Until you've driven one, I'd say don't judge. I was talked into taking an MX5 for a test drive, as a friend of the family was selling it. I didn't know if it was a Mk1 or Mk2, but really hoped it wasn't the Mk1. I was so disappointed when I turned up at the house to see that it was in fact a Mk1... But it was too late, I had to go through with the pretence that I was still considering it... THEN, I drove it! Despite all the myriad of reasons I could think of that meant I shouldn't buy it, I fell in love. 7 years later, it is still with me, and is still my absolute joy to drive.

Just bought my first one. An NA in NEO green (BRG). Love it
Really enjoyed this review among the hundreds of others on UA-cam. I got my RF from Car Gurus, highly recommended. Good job Vicky!
Agree, you can't go wrong with a good example MX5. I love mine... john

I use to own a MK2 and loved every minute I spent in it, still the best car I've ever driven.
My ND2 puts a huge smile on my face every time I get in it :-)
I own an ND,too. I STILL want a go in a G reg NA tho

Great review Vicky :)
The ND model has all the great attributes of the NA model, with added convenience, safety and luxury. It's an awesome everyday car.

The Zanzibarbarian ok
The mx5 design originated from inspirations of the elan. The exciting British driving experience.
Also good for a first car especially the 1.6
Beautiful car and very good review
The NC's reputation is not deserved, just drive one.
It's not deserved. However, I had both at the same time and ended up selling the NC. Still have the Na.
@@S-Ltd1000 I can see that as something you might drive on the weekends, but as an everyday driver, the NC is superior.

Totally agree, I love my 2011, kendo, nc2. It's brilliant in almost every way. John

Don't know why people wouldn't like the NC, it's my favourite one 😀
The wheel arches are overdone for my liking. Weight is another detraction.
No disrespect but the NC looks a lil bit like a frog
I absolutely love mine !!!

I love these mazda mx 5 so cool.
Michael Kavanagh uhm it’s uncool.
Very nice... so is the car. :-)
Oh wow. Yeah she's lovely. Still Rebecca is my all time favorite
Really want 1

I HAVE SAME 1 CAN YOU PUT NEW UP TO DATE ENGINE IN TO THESE
One thing to note - if your buying one and it has modified suspension, walk away. Mazda got it right first time.
I just bought a mk1 and it's got upgraded suspension , Meister R high performance , not the best imo , is it easy to revert back to original?
1.8 engine is 136-8hp not 126??
128 uk specs 133 eunos roadster

I thought Vicky was an ambassador for electric cars but now she's back to old classics?

Glad you mentioned the power steering, your right they are much better than the non powered
I’m going to go out and buy another Mk3 - NC - when this Virus thing is over.
Why not now? Especially we can't really travel. That is what I'm considering
@@colinl5985 well... I was made redundant..that put a kind of halt on it all

I think you'd love the ND Simon. Simple and light like the NA but more convenient to use.
Before doing a review all the facts need to be 100% correct , and they were not chaps.M-m
interior is veryyy tiny

Buy a 7seater then

They are great cars too, but very different, rwd with an open top doesn't get much better or cheaper.
I realy hate this car, so uncool.
And this review/car is old news. People that go to carclubs drive this.🤢
Sorry guys.
What do u drive..
I don´t want to know what you drive... but tastes are different.
