  • John from www.growingyourgreens.com/ goes on a field trip to Whisper Backyard Farm in Los Angeles to share with you how they are growing food fast using Hydroponics and Wicking Beds aka SIP Beds or Self Irrigated Planter Boxes to save water and run-off.
    In this episode, you will learn more about how you can make farming in a backyard profitable on a small scale. You will get a full tour of this backyard farm that operates in Los Angeles as a urban farm.
    First, you will see a better way to use your front yard - to grow a permaculture style food forest. You will learn the different kinds of trees that are planted in the front yard. You will learn how to pick a ripe finger lime and see the finger lime caviar that grows inside.
    You will learn about SIP Beds aka Self-Irrigated Planters aka Wicking Beds and how they are constructed and how they can benefit you and your garden in times of drought.

    So far you have always been innocent of any politicised ideas. You have also been the most proliferative vocal person for ideasm of healthy leafy green consumerism. You have always been positive and a person of goodwill. Nobody's gonna say anything negative about you. Ok?? From a fellow colleague who produces and consumes healthy greens and vegies. John Wilson from Hemet, CA. Hey John please don't make me laugh with apologies. Honestly I think the people watching your videos should apologize to you for their faults. I'm extremely impressed with this message.
    Recently I've been kinda stuck deciding between hydro/aquaponic, & soil/composting gardening, & it's all what necessity dictates, at this time.
    My yard soil is far too sandy, & although I have a compost pile in progress it's far from ready, & I can't bring myself to purchase all the potting, or topsoil I would require...
    Thanks for the info on Sea-90, salt Peter, & everything else...

      I was impressed with the amount of organic material you get from hydroponics which can be composted. I'm in a similar situation so my main focus with hydroponics is to grow food with compost material.

      You do know that you can do row Composting! Also put an ad on Craigslist or local FB for grass clipping and other organic matter maybe stop by your local grocer and as if they have any old produce! make your rows and dump it in.cover it and let it go! PS do not toss the sour milk it is great fertilizer!

    Thanks for all the info. Looking back on your hydroponic VS. aquaponic conversation, whats your opinion now in 2020? It sounded like Tilapia was the fish that was used. What about a different fish that is more resilient to water temperature / environment changes throughout the year? Thanks for passing on the knowledge!

    "i eat more plants then most people", I guess that makes two of us xD. I eat several serves of multiple different fruits and vegetables daily, typically my day starts with 3 bananas, 3 or 4 pieces of assorted stone fruit and 3 pieces of assorted citrus fruit and well, when custard apples are in season....don't even get me started (Nah seriously they are so good but) and a 20km pushbike ride (got to spend all those calories somehow yeah?). Good to hear someone else is on the fresh food train brother, power to you and awesome content! :D

    John people like the dried greens not only because of laziness but because of shelf life. Not all of us can eat as many fresh greens as you. When working a regular job they aren't as fresh when wilted in a lunch box and the time it takes to dehydrate and storage space for dehydrator in these days of tiny homes is not always accessible let alone space in fridge or freezer.

  • @lovinglife3954
    @lovinglife3954 3 роки тому

    Love this! I got a dehydrator this year and it’s amazing! I think I have sorrel growing wild in my yard, how can I verify this? Is there some kind of local agency I can take it to, to verify? I am skittish to try eating it if not sure.

    Non-edible trees are important too. They get much larger than fruit trees and provide shade and habitat for wildlife. Not to mention food for wildlife in some cases. You don't need to have a 100% edible landscape, everything works together. Flowers help your fruits and vegetables by attracting pollinators.

    Hi, John. I love this, and ALL your videos. They all are very good, and I have enjoyed them and learned a lot. You're the man! One question though, How do you GROW chickens? Do you bury them in the ground up to their head, and then , water them regularly? Do you need to fertilize? Should you grow your chickens in full sun, or partial shade? LOL. Just joking, buddy. Have a great one, and keep the great videos coming, my friend.

    I'll be honest, I've become very disappointed in Farmer's Markets. I was watching a video on youtube(can't remember the name of it) where they did an undercover piece and found many of these foods aren't even being grown organically let along on these peoples properties. Though that maybe a little different in California because they have stricter rules. I went to a Famer's market in my area and bought some peppers. The guy told me they were Bull Nose peppers and after some research found out he had sold me some Banana peppers. I know in our area many of these sellers buy their food in bulk from auctions too. So you have no idea where it came from, or if it was even grown organically ( chances are high it wasn't). Farmers markets need to go back to the backyard growers like it was intended.

      You are getting the same stuff you can buy in the store! I have seen produce with the UPC sicker on them! That tells me they are buying from the wholesale market to resell! Where IO live in Colorado we do have a legit Farmers market everything is localy grown!

    • @michellemaria1360
      @michellemaria1360 3 роки тому +2

      We get watermelon from my CSA with store UPC codes. That is because my CSA sells them to our local grocery stores too! They don't purposely put a sticker on our shares, it's just more efficient for them. 😊

      You’re better off going to A large food chain store to buy your organic vegetables because it exists extremely expensive and time consuming to get a label for organically grown most farmers who sell at the farmers market are just trying to make a living. I think it’s also depends on the market, the city, and the bylaws are different per market. I would check online farmers market in your area to scope out organic farmers.
