  • John from www.growingyour... visits Pico Blanco Farm, a 1 Acre Beyond Sustainable Farm on a the hill above Escazú, Costa Rica that was started 30 years ago.
In this episode, John takes you on a tour of this well-planned permaculture farm that captures its own water, generates its own power, makes its own gas, produces its own fertilizer and grows fruits and vegetables in harmony with nature.
You will discover some of the common and more uncommon fruits and vegetables are grown on this permaculture farm. You will learn some of the many systems that are in place to turn this farm into a zero-waste paradise where all black water (sewage) and grey water is bio filtered and used to grow food.
You will learn how gravity is used to water this terraced farm on a hill by using pipe reduction to increase water pressure.
You will discover some techniques for stopping erosion by increasing soil organic matter and getting roots in the ground.
You will learn some of the planning and techniques that one man used to turn an undesirable property on a hill to one of the most impressive permaculture farms I have ever visited.

You say near the end of the video that Ugo is one of the most humble people you've ever met.
You know the word humility (same root in Spanish) comes from a Latin word for earth (humus!). So someone who is humble is close to the earth! Excellent and important video. I love learning about these quiet heroes! Thank you for making this.

I"ve asked the same question, "Does the American Farmer feed his family and animals, then let his family eat those animals, that his farm produces?" Even now that many state and federal lawsuits have been filed reguarding Round-up, they have to know they have polluted their land sometimes owned for generations. Grandpa rolling in his grave.

Once saw an old book explaining benefits of satelite farming method.
Instead of clearing the land of all the original plants.
Its diagram show satelite planting spots allocated within the original land plants.
iirc One of the benefits stated was that there would be less pests as they would have original plants to feed on.

"Arracacha" at 6:40? Granadilla at 8:40... Sweet passionfruit...
Vetiver grass is good to filter water too. It can even grow on floaters on the water also a good producer of biomass for mulch or compost... Good for holding soil with deep root system...
Aren't Azolla and Duckweed the same species?

One of your best videos yet. I too am bothered by how sanitation is handled in US - to flush drinking water and dispose of nutrients that could quite easily water and nourish our plants, and to go through the expense of replacing an aging infrastructure with more of the same is just a shame. Just like composing in place, the world would benefit from sanitation in place if handled properly. I do what I can, and wish I knew how to help make a difference on a larger scale.

I absolutely LOVE how emotionally passionate you get about growing and sustainability and people, and helping people. I am the same way. I live , breath, and eat growing plants; striving for health, striving to be more and more Loving to myself, others, and the earth and environment every day. I recently was in Cuba, and instead of staying at the resort, whining about the food and service like the rest of my family, my partner were out in the communities, meeting and helping the people and learning about their growing conditions. You are one of the best that I follow for growing tips on the net. Forever your fan and your supporter. Thank you for everything throughout the years.

John what your doing is amazing..... God bless you.... I was very sick 2-incurable cancers...may 2011 I was diagnosed "highly treatable but incurable " was what doctors told me..... Jesus healed me 3 years ago...I am cancer free now ....I was FORCED to learn to eat right..... I'm now healthy.. Not 250 pounds anymore.... My only problem is I'm allergic to everything now...lol. Bone marrow transplant ...I thank God for my allergies now.... I know right away if something is toxic....
"If it don't mold.....don't eat!" Very refreshing to see you get emotional....

Great stuff. I have heard it said that the duckweed makes great poultry feed as it’s very high in protein and doubles its mass super fast. You touch a point that big gov. And big private corps. alike are ONLY interested in $ and self serving. We need to collectively come together and change the ignorance that “they” like to plant inside our minds before there is nothing left to save. Example...Stopped buying stuff with palm oil because it is sourced by big food processing companies that pay off crooked governments that force exploited farmers to sell at ridiculously low prices. I am AFRAID to mention names because of very real possible consequences. BUT....the snacks are triangular, cheesy, and crunchy, and although I like the taste. I don’t want to help crooked, self, serving, people that poison MY planet. Does anyone feel the same as I or am I nuts?

You are a good person John, keep on spreading the news, which is actually no news but nature´s law since our beginning.
I am spending many hours looking at your videos, I am starting a new "bio-finca" at the Canary Islands (Spain) and I have a lot of notes written down while watching your videos. I love your enthousiasm and pasion, and I think you´re living in the future, this is where we will go because it is the only way to survive as a species. Fortunately you made a lot of videos because I'm hooked :) Two big thumbs up!

@25:50, not to mention the NOISE POLLUTION generated by those septic tank truck pumps used to suck out the water that we hear all summer long! And let's not forget about lawnmowers etc. etc. etc..

I didn't know that you could eat the flesh of coffee berries. The ground gutters are a cool idea too. This whole video is amazing, filled with so many brilliant ideas.

San Diego’s public water system used plants to clean the water until the influx of people grew so fast and large the system could no longer handle the job in the area allotted so it was sold to another city. Seems like you need a hug, we appreciate you and the hope and ideas you bring.

Is this really just one acre? I live on nearly an acre supposedly (rented) but it seems waaaaaayyyyyyyy tinier than this place. We barely have room for a few plants in the front and back. I really hope my husband and I can buy property one day.

I love the idea of living on a sloped property. I do not think that there is anything gross about cooking with methane from poop, because of the fire purification but I read that you can get more methane from food waste than poop.

Here in Sweden they are starting to force people into municipal sewage systems. One public serf wrote me "because we use the best available technology". I smile at such brainwashed nonsense and realize where this country is heading in reality, as compared to the common fairy tale. If you have done university and work in the public sphere you know it all, everyone else are beneath you.
After several years of following this and other growing channels I am now ready to move to a warmer climate and start something fresh. This place really smacked me in the right direction. It feels a bit like the Celestine prophecy.

The Celestine prophecy is a great book!
Yes! I recently moved out of Houston for the same reasons! Possibly looking to make a move again just to a warmer place!
We all need to play our part in taking care of the earth!
